good morning bay area. let's get up and get going. this is "abc 7 mornings." good morning, everyone. it's saturday, november 18th. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen, she's tracking live doppler 7. hi, lisa. >> that hey, chris, good mornin you. live doppler 7 showing clear conditions, no fog to insulate us. we'll look for a nice sunny day on the way. but temperatures are in the mid-30s in novato. 40 in concord, 41 in san jose, with 39 in oakland, 47 san francisco. we're at 8 and 9 degrees cooler than yesterday in oakland and in the city. but 11 degrees colder in the north bay. so we will be looking at these chilly numbers through the next several hours. noontime, we're in the 50s pretty much everywhere. and by about 4:00, we're looking at upper 50s coast, 60 for most

of you. a pleasant afternoon, another cold night ahead. some rain in the offing, probably not as much as you think. we'll have a look at a warmer accuweather seven-day forecast coming up. chris? >> lisa, thank you. traffic along highway 101 in san francisco is running smoothly this morning. this wasn't the case on one of the busiest travel days of the year. a tragic crash yesterday afternoon blocked driver at the height of rush hour on the southbound side of the freeway near cesar chavez. the response and cleanup took more than four hours as drivers were funneled from just two lanes. abc 7 news reporter lonni rivera has more. >> reporter: from sky 7, traffic barely moved for hours during rush hour along highway 101. the backup began at 4:00 in the afternoon when a dump truck southbound near cesar chavez flipped on its side, striking a muny bus. >> we do know the collision itself involved the two right

lanes. we're trying to figure out what the sequence of events was. >> reporter: the driver of the truck died on scene despite the frantic attempt by first responders to save him. at least five passengers on the muny bus suffered non-life-threatening injuries. drivers heading home or out of town spent up to two hours in traffic. the gridlock backed up all the way to san francisco and into several east bay cities. >> use 280, possibly to the airport, and expect that also even after the lanes are all open, there's going to be some residual delays. >> reporter: even drivers who left early made it to sfo late. >> it was bumper to bumper pretty much from 580 in castro valley all the way through 'til we got off on the exit here on the 101. >> reporter: the freeway was packed with vehicles. chp investigators talk to some of the drivers who saw the crash. they're hoping they can help with the investigation. in san francisco, lonni rivera, abc 7 news. in oakland, a man and woman are in the hospitl recovering from a vicious dog attack.

nicole kennedy suffered terrible wounds to her head and face and a broken leg, after two pitbulls attacked her. the dogs also mauled a man who ran to help her. witnesses say the dogs escaped from a neighbor's yard and killed kennedy's shar-pei mix before attacking her. animal control has confiscated those dogs. the chp in santa rosa is serving for a pickup truck that was stolen from a north bay fire victim. they posted these pictures of the ford f-150 lariat. it belongs to a man whose home burned down last month. this is the last thing he needed in his life. the truck has a california license plate. 7 e 88349. the busy holiday shopping season is upon us. this is a make or break time of year for small businesses, but shoplifters are biting into profits. at abc 7 news reporter katie

marzullo explains, business owners aren't going to take it anymore. >> a good 10% of loss every year. >> reporter: brooke ramirez says that's probably an understatement. she says shoplifting is on the rise. lately she's been encountering professional thieves. >> a lot of them befriend you, are very sweet to you, and you think they wouldn't do that to a small business owner. >> reporter: she's told her employees never to confront a shoplifter. she's worried for their safety. the owner of redemption has taken a different approach. >> i've walked the street a couple of times, i've confronted people a couple of times. i have said, look, we have you on camera, you can give us back the item now, don't come in again. >> reporter: he says they've had thousands of items stolen. not only has he gone after people in person, he posts photos of shoplifters on social media. he hopes it sends a message. >> we don't want to be seen as an easy target. >> reporter: owners say people can help by supporting small

businesses. and don't forget, the saturday after thanksgiving is small business saturday. in campbell, katie marzullo, abc 7 news. the trump administration is threatening to close the palestinian liberation organization office in washington in 90 days unless they try to negotiate a peace deal with israel. an obscure law says the office can be closed if the palestinians try to get the international criminal court to prosecute israelis for crimes against palestinians. people in puerto rico still need basic supplies nearly two months after hurricane maria hit. this weekend you can help in san jose. >> the supplies and the relief has been slow going. and they're still recovering. >> abc 7 news visited fire station 6 in willow glen. that's one of the places where you can donate items today and tomorrow. we have a full list of locations at abc7news.com.

san jose police chief eddie garcia as well as local leaders put out a call for donations in a youtube video. chief garcia was born in puerto rico. happening today, santa rosa residents are holding a city-wide garage sale today. it's for those impacted by the north bay wildfires. it's all free. abc 7 news reporter katie utehs explains. >> reporter: the idea is simple. >> i bet you every house in santa rosa that survived this has things that we could help those in need. >> reporter: diane madero's home was spared in the north bay fires. >> my home is full of, you know, 40 years of buying and collecting. and i thought, how could anybody, where would you even start? >> reporter: she's holding a garage sale for fire survivors. but items are actually free. >> to me, it was easy. it's the least we can do. >> reporter: she joined the effort right away. now hundreds are participating.

there are a lot of new and gently used items. organizers want this to look nice, like a retail experience. they're asking people to donate tables and shopping bags. neighborhoods all over santa rosa will have giveaways. junior college, montgomery village, and more. the women realize that people are living in temporary housing or hotels without much storage. >> something to make you feel like you have a home, you know, even art. we have people that have donated art. >> reporter: the plan is to do this again once homes are rebuilt. the event is from 9:00 to 2:00 and will be based on an honor system, that those taking items are actually fire survivors. in santa rosa, katie utehs, abc 7 news. >> to find out what streets are taking part in the sale, head to abc7news.com. happening today, hundreds of volunteers in san jose will sort and pack boxes ahead of sacred heart's thanksgiving turkey distribution. starting monday, more than 4,000 families will receive holiday

food boxes from sacred heart community service. you can donate frozen turkeys and canned foods. the nonprofit also collects toys, books, and bikes to donate to 6,000 children each year, which will be handed out next month. such a great cause, lisa. >> yes, all that wonderful stuff this time of year. but what goes with it are really cold temperatures throughout the morning hours, the evening hours. and in between we get to bask in a lot of mild sunshine today. from our sutro tower camera, 34 degrees in santa rosa, 36 in san ramon. on the coast, we're in the 40s. everyone in shivering this morning. we'll look for milder readings in the days ahead. will we see any more rain? i'll let you know in a few minutes. >> lisa, thank you. also ahead, fire victims in napa are taking stock of what they've been through. you'll hear from a family that lost several homes as well as their business. also new details in an east bay sexting scandal. why a school district could be facing court sanctions.

new details in a sexting scandal that dates back to 20 shareholder. the brentwood unified school district and its attorney could face court sanctions. abc 7 news first reported on this case three years ago. an adams middle school student blackmailed a girl into sexual acts. the victim's family reached a $2 million settlement.

our media partner, "the east bay times," has obtained court documents which claim school district employees deleted e-mails and the district's lawyer failed to turn over crucial evidence. the victim is asking for more than $500,000 in sanctions against the school district's attorney. a multibillion dollar industry in the north bay is dealing with a major question after the wildfires. what did the smoke do to all the grapes? they're also wondering if the vin it come is ruined. those are the questions that abc 7's wayne freedman set out to answer. >> reporter: this laboratory is no place for the squeamish. but the machines don't care. they're precise, impartial. take the readouts, then live or die with the results. >> diagnosing compounds that are at too high or low a level. >> reporter: one small detail. this is not blood. it's wine. the official name for this science? >> enology. >> reporter: it's the science of wine. and all the more important this

year after a season that began wet, ended with a heat wave, and closed with waves of fire and blankets of smoke. >> when you farm, you make a deal with god. whatever's handed down, there's no appeal. >> reporter: it is the smoke especially that had bill williamson worried in the dry creek valley. >> we worried that it got smoke taint and in two or three years' time the wine will taste like bacon or ashtray. smoky. >> reporter: which leads us back to the lab, where instruments have discriminating palettes. call it the post-crush crunch, as they look at sugars, alcohol, acidity, ph levels, color intensity. since most of the hair veracity harvest was already in, only 3% of the north bay grapes sat in smoke on the vine. and the results, not bad. >> the impact of the smoke is not as strong as we were expecting. so it's easy to deal with it and to make it not smoky. >> reporter: they're tried and true poly syllabic methods that probably are too many

information. and maybe in a few years, he'll impress you with that in his tasting rooms. for now, if you're a wine lover, 2017 has survived its trial by fire. in sonoma county, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. with thanksgiving week approaching, fire victims in napa are taking stock of what they've been through and where they're headed as they navigate a difficult time. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley caught up with one family that lost several homes as well as their business. >> on a level of what i've been through, i'm somewhat numb to holidays. >> reporter: dan harberts walked me through his sprawling property, what remains of his homes, office, engraving shop, and chapel that are all gone. then, 20 acres of green cemetery plots untouched by fire at

bubbling well pet memorial park. 15,000 pets are buried here. he feels lucky the records are saved. drone view 7 captured the devastation at this family compound in napa, a before and after picture say it all. he, his wife and 97-year-old mother were airlifted out on a chopper that couldn't take his dog. drake survived the inferno inside this truck. there are other complications. 100 urns with pet ashes in them were in essence re-cremated and lost. it's hard to notify the pet owners. but there are plans to build a memorial here. once fema clears the property, they hope to bring in a temporary trailer and reopen for business. >> i've kind of put the emotional feelings aside, just to try to focus and stay moving forward. >> our survival, our life as a business, we can live or die because of this catastrophe. my sole purpose right now to see that doesn't happen. >> reporter: he says he's stuffing down his fears and not

facing his own depression over the losses, choosing instead to embrace his family and his community. >> we've just got to carry on. each day gets better. we're coming together for thanksgiving. >> reporter: in napa, leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. today is a big day for drivers who use a popular road in one east bay city. crews will be taking down the road closed signs on morgan territory road in clayton at 5:00 tonight. the two-lane road suffered considerable damage from the storms last winter, and it's been closed for months. in fact the road was slipping up to a foot a day. repair work began in july. oakland city leaders are making sweeping changes as we approach one year since the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire. abc 7 news was in oakland as the mayor and other city leaders announced reforms to prevent the same type of tragedy from happening again. the city is adding more fire and building inspectors, adding outside help to clear inspection backlogs and bringing the fire

and building inspection database onto a single system. the effort includes multilingual outreach to tenants. >> we've put together notices that are also getting word to the tenants because a lot of this is really about communication, not just to the owner. making sure the residents in these buildings and facilities are aware of actions pending and of resources that they have. >> the oakland warehouse association has voiced some concerns about seeing more evictions as a result of the reforms. san francisco's skyline now shines brightly at night thanks to a familiar holiday sight. fireworks celebrated the lighting of the embarcadero center. 17,000 bulbs now outline the complex's four towers. this is the 31st year for embarcadero center's light display. abc 7 news was also in union square. pets up for adoption will capture the hearts of shoppers

in the windows at macy's. people have adopted 9,000 pets that appeared at the store. shoppers also donated nearly $100,000 to the spca last year. happening today, one of san francisco's oldest charities starts its thanksgiving turkey donation drive. st. anthony's is feeding the homeless this thanksgiving and it needs your help. the organization is accepting food donations and lightly worn clothes. curbside drop-off starts at 9:00 this morning at st. anthony at golden gate avenue. in the south bay, second harvest food bank is collecting turkeys for thanksgiving. the food bank still needs 5,000 frozen turkeys to reach its goal of 24,000 turkeys. they must be donated by monday. monetary donations also help. second harvest has three locations where you can drop off goods. two centers are in san jose, one is in san carlos. you'll want to check the hours for each of the centers before going. good saturday morning. waking up to some pretty frosty

temperatures. here's live doppler 7, no cloud cover to speak up. the storm track being pushed well to the north. the pacific northwest, a big dome of high pressure that protects us today and tomorrow. we'll get into high clouds tomorrow. this morning, how about a windchill factor in the north bay, feels like 28 degrees in santa rosa. we're from about 7 to 13 degrees colder this morning compared to yesterday morning. we have a festive look outside from our exploratorium camera where this panel has the milder numbers. 47 in the city, 39 in oakland, 37 in gilroy with low 40s from mountain view to san jose. half moon bay is at 45. for mt. tam, oh, boy, the frosty numbers here from 34 napa, santa rosa, 35 by the delta, 36 novato, with 40 in concord, 41 in livermore. the sun coming up in another 30 minutes. so we'll keep these numbers pretty chilly right on through about the 8:00 hour. then we'll begin to recover a

bit. look at that glassy bay out there. it looks pretty nice with clear sky. it's going to be a beautiful afternoon. it is chilly, though. we will enjoy a dry weekend. so our rainfall has pushed us anywhere from about over an inch in san jose for the season to about five inches in the north bay. we're around average. that's good news for mid-november. light rain could arrive in the north bay monday morning. it's looking iffy now, but a warmer pattern arrives into next week. let's take a look at the cold temperatures. another day of this tomorrow, where in santa rosa you should be waking up to near 40 degrees. tomorrow, another day in the mid-30s. then you recover with the cloud cover, perhaps some rain on monday. but 50s will take place tuesday, wednesday, into thanksgiving for your morning lows. you know the afternoon highs will be quite mild. your hour by hour forecast today calls for clear skies. tomorrow morning we'll get increasing high to mid-level

clouds. we'll get a little bit of sunshine here and there. it will be dry. stopping this right at around the morning commute on monday, 5:00. you can see the rain offshore. this looks like it's going to bump into a very dry atmosphere. as a result, rainfall amounts are looking very, very light, from a couple of hundredths, napa, novato, 5/100ths calistoga. highs today in the lower 60s. san rafael and richmond should be a nice afternoon. 64, mild, though, in san jose. if you're headed to stanford later on today, bring the jacket. upper 50s 5:00. and we'll look for numbers to drop through the 50s to the low 50s by about 8:00. the accuweather seven-day forecast, we're mild today and tomorrow with more sun today. upper 50s at the coast. low 60s bay side. perhaps a little bit of light rain in the north bay monday, a 1 on our storm impact scale, with lingering clouds on tuesday. boy, the temperatures really rebound with very mild readings

41 in mountain view with 37 in gilroy. from mt. tam, the colder numbers here, 34 in santa rosa, napa. 35 by the delta. around 40 degrees in the inland valleys. we're much colder this morning due to a clear sky. we'll continue to see those numbers stay on the nippy side throughout about 8:00 and then 50s by noontime. sunny and numbers near 60 for most of us. the sun sets before 5:00, and we'll see cool night tonight. you'll need the jacket. clouds increase for the second half of your weekend. but will we see any rain? i'll have the answers, and show you that with my full accuweather seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> lisa, thank you. president trump has made a surprise announcement to suspend his decision on importing big game trophies. the president tweeted that he has put big game trophy decision on hold until such time as he can review all conservation facts.

he said an update would come soon. the move comes as celebrities, politicians, and even some trump supporters had criticized the administration's decision to allow people to import elephant trophies into the united states. here is abc news reporter david packer. >> reporter: president trump changing course, holding off on a decision to lift a ban that would have allowed big game hunters to bring their trophies through u.s. customs. the president says he's putting the move on hold until he reviews the facts. the move, which overrode a ban imposed by the obama administration two years ago, sparked outrage. >> this is about a trophy hunting industry and a small set of people who think it's okay to kill some of the rarest, most beautiful animals in the world. >> reporter: some, like the president's son, don junior, seen here with an elephant tail in one hand and a knife in the other, argue that the tens of thousands of dollars spent by big game hunters may protect the animals. >> that money goes to fund the antipoaching leagues that prevent people from doing damage. >> what contradictory

message are we sending by saying it's wrong for black africans to kill elephants for their tusks but it's okay for rich white people to go there and kill them for their tusks? >> reporter: the president is not a big game hunter but said he would consult with interior secretary ryan zinke, who hunts. dave packer, abc news, new york. now to the national outcry over sexual misconduct. the president is weighing in, blasting senator al franken after a woman accused him of forcibly kissing her during a uso tour before he was a senator. the president has remained silent on senate candidate roy moore. abc news' cecilia vega has more. >> reporter: it didn't take the president long to weigh in on a photo of al franken as he appeared to grope a sleeping woman. in a tweet, the president said,

"and to think just last week he was lecturing anyone who would listen about sexual harassment and respect for women." that searing rebuke came just hours after the accusations against the minnesota democrat became public. but as for the more than week-old allegations accusing alabama republican senate candidate roy moore of sexual misconduct -- should roy moore assign, mr. president? do you believe his accusers? te president ignored our questions repeatedly. with those nonanswers, and that attack on franken, the allegations of sexual misconduct against president trump himself are back in the spotlight. from that "access hollywood" tape. >> i'm automatically attracted to beautiful -- i just start kissing them, it's like a magnet. when you're a star, they let you do it, you can do anything. grab them by the [ bleep ]. >> reporter: to the more than dozen women who came forward during the campaign, alleging everything from sexual assault

to harassment and inappropriate behavior. >> all of these liars will be sued after the election is over. >> reporter: we put the question to the white house. >> if it's fair to investigate al franken and the allegation made by his accuser, is it also fair to investigate this president and the allegations of sexual misconduct made against him by more than a dozen women? >> look, i think that this was covered pretty extensively during the campaign. we addressed it then. the american people i think spoke very loud and clear when they elected this president. >> but how is this different? >> i think in one case, specifically senator franken has admitted wrongdoing and the president hasn't. that's a very clear distinction. >> reporter: no sign of franken in the wake of radio host leeann tweeden's bombshell claims about their work together on a uso tour on 2006. in addition to that photo, she says he kissed her forcefully and against her will. >> i was just disgusted, i felt like, you know, he betrayed my

trust. >> reporter: tweeden revealed she's now received a letter of apology. >> dear leeann, i want to apologize to you personally, i am so sorry, sincerely, al franken. >> reporter: cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. alabama's republican governor says she will vote for roy moore for senate despite the sexual allegations against him, as his wife and a group of women aggressively defended him outside alabama's state capital. moore's supporters accused the media and washington establishment for trying to block his election as a way of derailing president trump's agenda. >> even after all the attacks against me, against my family, against the foundation, and now against my husband, he will not step down. >> moore faces accusations of sexual misconduct toward teenaged girls when he was in his 30s.

silicon valley's newest tourist attraction was unveiled in cupertino. the new visitors center is another sign that tech tourism is becoming a thing. >> reporter: when it comes to silicon valley, tech companies love to connect with visitors in more ways than one. >> it's interesting to see what it looked like when it was finished. >> reporter: apple opened its new visitors center. customers making the trip to cupertino to be the first inside. >> i knew it was coming, okay, i need to travel to go there. if it's possible, i will go. >> reporter: call it a sign of the times. people talking about technology with much fan fare. this couple came from france and decided to drop by as part of their honeymoon. >> it's very, very wow. it's a great experience for us. >> reporter: a stop in silicon valley they didn't want to miss. the visitors center is also a store where you can buy the

in sports, the big game is even bigger this year for cal and stanford. besides looking to end a losing streak to their rival, the golden bears need one more win to become eligible. kickoff at 5:00 tonight. this afternoon, san jose state plays their final road game of the season at colorado state. that game starts at 12:30. baseball's season is here and it appears the giants are trying to make a big move. here's abc 7 sports director larry beil with the details in this morning's sports report. good morning, everybody. after losing 98 games last season, the giants are swinging for the fences, trying to land the guy who routinely clears the fences. giancarlo stanton won the mvp award on thursday. it figures to be the several offers for stanton. he hit 59 homers. the only reason this guy is available is because the marlins want to she have had the 295

it's 40 in half moon bay. take a look at this panel. numbers just above freezing in santa rosa, 34 for novato and napa with upper 30s by the delta. just around 40 for our inland valleys. so yes, it is certainly chilly out there. you can see the clear sky, and we will be enjoying tons of sun later on today. live doppler 7 really showing how clear we are with the cloud cover well to the north. we have to widen perspective to see the cloud cover that will stay here for the next 24 hours or so. and then we'll begin to see some high to mid-level clouds. that will help mitigate some of our overnight lows tonight, keep them slightly milder. then we'll really notice a difference as we get into next week. ten degrees colder in the city, 11 degrees colder in novato. ten degrees colder on the peninsula and south bay as well. from the peninsula, it is clear. should be a great day to fly and a busy day to fly. chilly this morning with some patchy fost, especially in the north bay.

dry over the weekend. the rain now looks to be just in the north bay. and we'll see if we can get any down here for much of the week. in fact it's going to be quite dry. it looks to be a pretty dry week. as we take a look at our east bay valleys today, notice in the 40s, a chilly start. then in the mid- to upper 50s by 10:00, 12:00. we should top out in the low 60s. enjoy the sun today. there will be more of it today than tomorrow. our hour by hour forecast animation shows we are dry throughout the day tomorrow. we'll begin to see a few high and mid-level clouds. today is the sunnier day. and notice the trajectory of this slug of moisture by 5:00 monday morning. it looks like it's going to push north and it probably will evaporate somewhat. we'll only see a couple of hundredths, this is monday night, 5/100ths calistoga. the rest of the bay area for the week ahead looks pretty dry. that could be our only chance of rain. highs today underneath a sunny

afternoon, in the low 60s oakland, 62. 63 in fremont. 64, though, in the south bay. headed to the beach, 66 in santa cruz. if you're headed to stanford stadi stadium, a cool one, low 50s 8:00. download our accuweather appear and you'll be able to keep track of the temperatures or rainfall hour by hour in your neighborhood. tonight we'll still have 30s in the north bay. a few more 40s from the south bay. a few more areas of cloudy cover in the accuweather seven-day forecast, looking at another pleasant day tomorrow with more clouds, though, 1 on our storm impact scale. it looks like a north bay event. we'll look for the increasing clouds to linger on tuesday but highs in the 70s and 60s around the bay, even at the coast. so good weather for getting outside and enjoying the afternoons if it stays that way, and it should. we'll keep track of that rain for you on monday. >> people are pretty happy that the weather isn't too bad with
