afternoon. a partly cloudy sky. the look ahead, some rain arriving tomorrow. we're dry and warmer tuesday, wednesday, thanksgiving. look what happens friday and saturday. more rain headed our way. it could be more than just a little bit for the north bay. it will include everyone. details in a few minutes. >> thank you. breaking news. an inmate who escaped overnight is now in custody. state officials say this man disappeared. staff could not find him during an inmate count around 11:15 last night. vaca turned himself in to the police department about an hour or so ago. he was serving a 12 year sentence for armed robbery. the chp says a suspected drunk driver drove through a closed construction zone killing his father and seriously injuring his mother. in just the past two weeks --

rather the past week alone, two suspected fatal dui crashes have ripped apart families in the north bay. one happened on tuesday. the latest happened yesterday. it happened yesterday in a construction area near highway 101 and san antonio creek. we have the latest. >> reporter: this is what's left of the the now mangles chrysler convertible. police say the family in the car is from lake county. the driver was a 29-year-old man. his father was in the passenger seat. and his mother was in the back seat. tho one was wearing a seat belt. though the construction signs on highway 101 are highly visible, the driver still ended up on a closed road. >> there was a 30 foot gap in the freeway that has yet to be completed.

the vehicle traveled off the paved portion and subsequently struck a bridge abutment wall. >> you can see from this drone view, part of the path the car took, before crashing into the open gap and falling 15 feet. the 69-year-old passenger died immediately. the man's wife and son were rushed to the hospital. >> the driver was driving under the influence of both alcohol and drugs. the driver has been placed under arrest. >> reporter: this is the second fatal suspected dui in less than a week in sonoma county. on tuesday on highway 112, police arrested the driver of this pickup truck after he drove head on into a car driven by a young mother. she and her 7-year-old daughter died. at that scene and at today's, empty beer cans were found in the crashed cars. >> impairment being a factor in this, we all know that impairment can affect your judgement. >> reporter: chp has upped

patrols and has all available officers on the roads this holiday week. three people are recovering this morning after a car hit them in san francisco's mission district. it happened last night on 15th street. police say they are expected to be okay. depp truties are searching the person who shot and killed a man as he was trying to sell an item he posted online. it happened around 1:00 yesterday afternoon at a parking lot. the 32-year-old victim was trying to sell an electronic device to another person when he was shot. deputies say the shooter managed to escape. the identity of the victim could be released later today. police are encouraging you f if you are selling an item, meet the buyer at a police station or

request a civil standby which means having an officer supervise the transaction. some police stations around the bay area, including daily city and fremont, also have what is known as a safe exchange zone. that's a special area set up specifically for doing business with people you don't know. it's monitored by cameras and with police officers nearby. >> san jose firefighters confirm a third person died from an apartment fire on south 9th street. the bay area news group report a 14-year-old girl who attended gunderson high school and her 21-year-old brother, a student at san jose state university, died at the scene yesterday. their 48-year-old mother died at the hospital. her husband is in critical condition. we have more on what may have caused the fire. >> all i remember is hearing people screaming and also glass breaking. >> reporter: this neighbor woke to chaos saturday morning.

the upstairs unit of the apartment house next door was on fire. >> smoke coming out of the windows. there was a couple or whoever were at that far end trying to get out the window. >> the flames were just unbelievable. >> reporter: a family of four lived in the unit, all trapped by the smoke and flames. >> we went to a third alarm, which is almost 100 firefighters. >> reporter: a neighbor says the family was hard working and kind sgli wish this could have been prevented. really, really sad. >> reporter: in the apartment, there is little left. fire officials believe the intense blaze started in the kitchen. a fire extinguisher still hangs unused outside the door. >> we heard no smoke detectors. >> reporter: firefighters investigating if they were working. >> whether they were or not, their task didn't get accomplished, which is for whatever reason these poor people were not woken in time to get out safely. >> reporter: these people say the building's owns had no

comment. the fbi and california highway patrol carried out raids targeting several locations in santa rosa yesterday afternoon. according to the santa rosa press democrat, they appeared to target motorcyclists gatherered at the wagon wheel is a loan and a home in the southwest part of the city. witnesses tell the press democrat several motorcyclists were detained. the fbi tells abc 7 news, agents served federal warrants at several locations and the u.s. attorney will release more information tomorrow. the postal service is sorting through damaged mail after a mail truck caught fire on friday. the fire department sent us these pictures. the carrier was not hurt. postal workers are trying to see how much of the mail that was inside can still be delivered. investigators say the fire was not started by any of the mail. the cause is under investigation.

a foster city man faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of molesting a child in jamaica. the department of justice says 43-year-old douglas peacock molested a 6-year-old in the pool at a resort in june. he is being returned to san francisco to face the charge. 52 immigrants who hail from 21 countries took the oath to become american citizens. the naturalization ceremony in san francisco drew a lot crowd of family, friends and supporters. you can hear them cheering as they were sworn in. the group included employees of many bay area companies including auto desk and sysco. all sharing a desire to become u.s. citizens. >> there's a lot of feelings. i take pride in this. it's a really special day for me. >> the daughter of fred

answer shortly with her full accuweather forecast. closing arguments will begin tomorrow in the murder trial for the man accused of killing kate steinle. a judge ruled jurors will be allowed to consider a first degree murder verdict. he is facing charges in the death of steinle in 2015. the prosecution says it was intentional. the defense calls her death a freak accident. happening today, family members who lost loved ones or had the loved ones severely injured in traffic crashes will march in san francisco. today is the third annual world day of remembrance for traffic victims. the goal of the march is to call attention to those incidents. the memorial walk starts at 3:00 this afternoon at the 16th street bart station. it ends at san francisco city hall with a vigil.

a holiday tradition in sonoma took on special significance last night. thousands of community members gathered for the fifth annual holiday lighting of sonoma plaza. many said the event was an opportunity for community members to come together and bond after last month's wildfires. organizers also hope lights will bring out of towners back to sonoma county. >> when you come in july, you come in october, you come in december, at any time of the year we're always welcoming. tonight we showed that. >> 150,000 holiday lights were turned on at sonoma's historic town plaza. they are strung across eight acres. they will be lit throughout the holidays. it's the story about selfishness, heroism and bravery. last month, we told you about two napa men who made fire lines with bulldozers to keep those wildfires from spreading to the hidden hills community. we have more on how that

neighborhood said thanks to those men this weekend. >> the strength and bravery you showed -- >> reporter: hidden hills is a close-knit neighborhood. but this party is not your usual one. it's a gathering of gratitude for two guys. >> it's a good feeling. >> reporter: in october, abc 7 news showed you the fire lines carved by bulldozers. eli provided the dozers. he and dan jumped into action and put dan's training from the marines into use. >> when dan and eli jumped on their bulldozers, it was incredible. it felt like we had a savior in our midst. >> we were the last line of defense. if it went past us, all the houses were going to burn. >> reporter: neighbors wrote personal thank you notes, part of a celebration. efrp calls them heros. when you talk to them, you get the sense they're just two

low-key nice guys. >> we didn't do it for this. we did it to save the houses. we were running on pure adrenaline. >> reporter: the fire was moving closer to this neighborhood. many were evacuated. cal fire had limited resources to protect these homes. >> makes me realize how thankful. people do amazing things. it really makes a difference. >> we knew we could make a difference if we worked together. that's what we did. >> reporter: 69 homes are still standing and adjacent neighborhoods were left untouched. they are still getting adjusted to being so popular. >> you drive down the street all the time. >> you wave. >> we will now. now we know everyone. >> we're getting >> thank you. santa rose saturday neighbors hosted a garage sale to benefit those who lost

everything in the wildfires. everything free to fire victims. the organizer plans to hold another distribution in april when she hopes more people have new places to stay. >> a lot of the people that have come today haven't found homes yet. they're just trying to grab small things that -- blanket, pillow that might help them out. and maybe a room they are renting. >> an honor system was in place. trusting that those who took the items were fire victims. a san francisco institution has kicked off its annual turkey curbside donation drive. abc 7 news was outside st. anthony's where you can drive by and drop off a frozen turkey, ham or gently used clothing. more than 600 turkeys were dropped off yesterday. they could use more. they expect to serve about 3,500 dinners on thanksgiving. >> it's very inspiring to work here and to see the generosity

of the city come here to help their brothers and sisters who are less fortunate. >> you can drop off a donation today from 9:00ing in 3:00 or between 9:00 and 4:00 monday through wednesday or on thanksgiving day from 9:00 until 1:00. st. anthony's is on golden gate avenue. the second harvest food bank of santa clara and san mateo needs 1,000 more turkeys to help families this thanksgiving. they have a goal of 24,000 turkeys to distribute to those less fortunate. >> each month, we feed about 257,000 people. today is a big part of that, especially for the upcoming thanksgiving holiday. >> second harvest centers are closed today. you can donate turkeys tomorrow between 8:00 and 6:00. happening today, more than 9,000 runners will race through the streets of berkeley.

you with 30s on the coast. looking at another vantage point out towards the bay. we are near freezing in the north bay. 32 in santa rosa. 38 in napa with mid 30s in livermore and concord, 41 degrees. you will see more clouds throughout the day today. nice thing to wake up to, isn't it? all the pretty vistas around the bay. chilly morning with patchy frost around the bay. looking at light rain arriving in the north bay, maybe some light drizzle for your morning commute. otherwise, warmer for the week ahead. we will stay dry through thanksgiving. then looking at more rain friday and saturday. as we look at san jose today, you are enjoying more sunshine, 40s to start out. cloud cover will be a little bit slower to enter the south bay. as a result, you will be mild with numbers in the mid 60s,

partly cloudy skies by 2:00. numbers will stay mild through the later afternoon in the low 60s. sunny afternoon in the south bay. a storm impact scale, a one, a light system. less than a quarter of an inch of rain. cloudy and dry for most. the clouds today and then here is the rain early tomorrow. by noontime, it's still well to the north. as we put in the rainfall accumulation, you will notice that most of it is well to the north with only a couple hundredths from richmond toward napa and a tenth or better around calistoga. we skip ahead to thanksgiving night. morning, we're dry. by 8:00 at night, there's showers offshore. through the overnight hours, they will press through to the bay area. by friday morning, that shopping day, if you are lucky to have it off, then you can do whatever in

suffering from organ failure. tmz reporting cassidy needs a liver transplant. he is known for his role in the tv series "the partridge family." and for his career as a pop singer. a 9-year-old from l.a. county is being called a hero after coming to the rescue of her school bus driver who had pulled over saying she needed someone to call 911. >> i went inside to my house. grabbed my mom's ipad. facetimed her. she said, call 911. she was over the wheel, squeezing it. she was sweating. >> that little girl happens to be miss antelope valley. her good instincts helped lead paramedics to the bus driver who suffered a medical episode. the driver will be okay. the heroic 4th grader stayed on the bus until the paramedics arrived. council members will honor her at their next meeting.

when is the last time you went to a movie? the box office is down 5% this year. compared to last year. that's because there are fewer moviegoers. new movie service is helping people get back to the theater, led by the co-founder of netflix. >> movie ticket sales are way down. >> i can't remember the last time i was at the movies. >> with the rise of streaming services like netflix, getting people into theaters is getting harder and harder. the company movie pass is looking to change that. for less than $7 a month, you could go to the movies every night of the week. >> we're essentially putting our money where our mouth is in a way to reenergize the theatrical film business. >> i would watch a lot of movies. i would watch a movie twice now. >> that's what movie pass is hoping for. because they are paying theaters full price for every ticket

sold, they could lose a lot of money. but they have two ways of making it back. one is to get so many customers back into the movies that theaters, film companies anz vendors will begin to share their profits. when you sign up, you give movie pass information about yourself and your movie viewing habits. they sell that to movie companies. >> tho one really knows who sees which film. as a result, studios have to spend tens of millions of dollars marketing films where they should know like netflix knows exactly who is interested in seeing those films. > for many, it's a small price to pay in order to pay such a small price. >> i think i'm going to invest in that. >> it's like a pass. you come three or four times, it pays for itself. still ahead on abc 7 mornings, this may look like a funny device attached to a phone. to many, this is the laser tag
