that's how we can help. >> and they are helping comfort food for victims for the north bay wildfires. >> the owners of a santa rosa restaurant open their doors and their hearts to host a special thanksgiving meal. good evening. i'm kristen sze in for ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. hundreds from last month's north bay fires have a place to go to celebrate thanksgiving. >> that's right. fr franchetti's restaurant. >> lilian kim tells you that the owners say it will be a place where fire victims can find comfort by being together. >> workers at franchetti's are preparing holiday favorites. 1600 pounds of turkey to be exact with all the beloved side dishes. >> i can feel like we can help those people and we're going to be throwing a great party tomorrow. >> gesina and john have planned for 600 meals, all for fire

victims and first responders. they received donations to cover most of the costs. and when it was time to take reservations, they didn't realize how emotional it was going to be. people ended up sharing struggles. >> we ended up crying on the phone. i can't wait to meet her. i don't know her. she coming in at 1:30. >> they're only two blocks from coffey park, one of the neighborhoods here in santa rosa destroyed by the fire. and while the restaurant withstood the devastation, there was concern whether it would stay in business. >> so many people are getting moved out of your neighborhood. and you just think oh my god, you're going to be out of business tomorrow. i tell you, we opened the door, and the restaurant was full. it was packed. >> which is why they say they have so much to be thankful for this thanksgiving and expressing their thanks to something they felt was important to do. >> there has been a lot going around in the community. what's one more. >> lilian kim, abc 7 news. >> well, here in the bay area, more than two million cars are

expected on the roads this holiday. that's according to aaa. and for many of those travelers, today was the day to hit the road. we saw heavy traffic late into the evening all across the bay area. abc 7 news reporter katie marzullo has the great escape live from mineta san jose airport. katie? >> dan, hello. happy almost thanksgiving to you. still very busy here at the airport at this hour. if you take a look at all these cars, most are headed to southwest in terminal b. but they're back upped all the way here at terminal a. so for some it's been a real travel nightmare today. but for others, a dream. ♪ >> you get off here, and you've got music playing upstairs. there is people wanting to dance half. could be better? >> shawna flew uin from denver on the night before thanksgiving. she had no complaints. >> it's the first time i've ever flown for a thanksgiving holiday. and i would highly recommend it. it's wonderful. >> fliers traveling out of san jose had a different tale to

tell. >> awful. >> she is talking about the traffic. >> we have a lot of time here. but it's basically almost time to work. >> karen woods drove to the airport to pick up her daughter. their drive home to hollister promised to be slow going. >> usually an hour. it's going take over two hours. maybe two and a half. >> wolfgang mueller was planning to drive to orange county until he got wind of the traffic situation. he changed his mind wednesday afternoon and booked a flight. >> very happy with the decision. an hour and 15 minute flight versus eight-hour drive. all good, yeah. >> looking at this gridlock at the los angeles international airport, it seems he made the right choice to stay off the road. plus people at the san jose airport were in a perfectly good mood. >> happy thanksgiving! >> in san jose, katie marzullo, abc 7 news. >> and take a look at this. taillights have liggett lit up the evening sky. you're looking at slow traffic

and video recorded a little earlier this evening. the heavier traffic son l.a.x.'s departure level, of course. on the right side of your screen. the weather is great heading to the airport. will our warm temperatures stick around for thanksgiving? here is abc 7 news sandhya patel. >> we're going to see some of the mild to warm weather tomorrow for thanksgiving. live doppler 7 showing you quite a bit of cloud cover and some moisture getting picked up in the clouds that is nearing ukiah right now. not any of it is reaching the ground that could be changing as we head towards tomorrow. most of the showers in northern california. our radar has been tracking it. now i want to show you what is going to happen hour-by-hour. 4:00 a.m. tomorrow, we could see a little activity around mendocino and sonoma counties as we head into 5:00 a.m. so if you have early travel plans takes you through these areas, keep in mind lake county might see a few showers 9:00 a.m., or a few sprinkles. and pretty much the rest of you, you're looking at clouds for the afternoon. sunshine in the south bay for your thursday.

here is look at your thanksgiving planner. first thing in the morning, north day partly cloudy at noon. and mild to warm with 60s to 70s by 4:00 p.m. by evening it cools off. i'll be back with a look at the complete weekend forecast coming up. >> thank you. lines are forming at the best buy store in union city. you can see bargain hunter spots already staked out at the front of the line. looks like at least one person is going to sleep here. best buy opens for black friday tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. for a list of all the stores opening early for black friday, go to abc7news.com or our abc 7 news app. and developing news in san jose. a fire burned through a building with a medical marijuana dispensary and medical offices near the reed hillview airport. it started just before 9:00 tonight outside the building and spread to the inside. the fire is now under control. glad to say no one was hurt. arson investigators are looking into whether it started in a small homeless encampment nearby.

all right. one captured. one still on the loose. officers are on the lookout tonight for an escaped inmate from santa clara county who is still on the run. the colin powell in stockton arrested tremel mcclough last night, but bivins is still on the loose. in his desperation, he managed to squeeze past police officers after they shot at him on a dead-end street. officers arrested mcclough at a walmart. bivins could still be driving this green ford explorer, california license plate 7tty505. be on the lookout. governor brown pardoned a man for a double murder today after dna evidence showed he was wrongfully convicted nearly 40 years ago. police and prosecutors agreed with the governor's order to release 70-year-old craig colley from prison immediately. colley looked like this around the time his ex-girlfriend and her 4-year-old son were killed. colley always maintained his innocence. he was arrested on the same day

rhonda and donald wicht were found dead in 1978. word of caution and advice for people who use their laptops in coffee shops around the bay area. several east bay cities are seeing a spike in thefts. abc 7 news reporter katie uhehs has that story. >> i saw a hand and my laptop was swiped away. >> alameda was the last place sarah expected to lose her laptop. >> honestly, i was shocked. i was speechless. >> tuesday evening a pair of thieves targeted her and an elderly woman. customer benjamin ran outside. >> but the guy was gone already. and then i saw the older lady that the purse got stolen from her. >> there are cameras all over this shopping center, including two perched above starbucks. but neither the coffee shop nor alameda police have said whether or not the laptop thieves were caught on camera. >> i don't know what that guy was thinking, you know.

new york city police say tomorrow will be their strongest show of force ever to protect more than three million people at the macy's thanksgiving day parade. parade organizers inflated giant balloons today before they'll float above manhattan tomorrow. officials blocked streets with garbage trucks carrying tons of sand to stop potential vehicle attacks. the parade comes less than a month after eight people died in a suspected terror attack using a pickup truck. tonight 2800 pounds of turkey along with 4,000 pumpkin pies are ready to be served to those without a place to call home this thanksgiving. abc 7 news was at st. anthony's foundation in san francisco as

police chief william scott, fire chief joanne hayes white, mayor ed lee and volunteers carved up the birds. st. anthonys is prepared to serve 3,000 people tomorrow. mayor lee just announced the opening of two new emergency navigation centers on unused caltrans land. the goal is to get a thousand more people off the streets. >> we can organize these encampments, get them off the street. get them in places where people can be covered. >> the mayor, fire and police chief also helped serve free meals to the homeless at glide today to make sure that no one goes hungry. >> lead by example. one ride share service that does much more than take people to their destination. it also provides emotional support. drivers for survivors offers rides to cancer patients and they're about to expand. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony has our story from fremont. >> i have before. >> you have? >> yes. >> it's a day that craig might

cities. and a nonprofit has performed a partnership with kaiser permanen permanente. >> we know emotional support does improve overall survival rates. >> this is not a drop and roll. well go through. it's a door through door service. we bring people into their appointments, and we sit with them and make sure they're comfortable. >> everybody is really kind. >> in fremont, laura anthony, abc 7 news. a homeless man's selfless act has changed his life. kate mcclure of new jersey ran out of gas while driving in philadelphia. it was late and she was scared. this man whose name is johnny who is homeless and frequents the area told her to stay in her car and lock her doors. he walked to a gas station and spent his last $20 to fill a gas can for her. she was so touched, she started a gofundme page to get johnny an apartment. guess what? look at that. so far it's raised $112,000. >> that is great. >> yeah. >> johnny is a good guy,

obviously. glad to see him getting some help. good weather on our way for turkey day. >> yeah. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the forecast for thanksgiving and beyond. >> a feel-good story. and a great looking forecast. i do want to show you, in case you're waiting for some rain this holiday weekend, here is best chance. saturday night into sunday, a level 1 system. and that will bring us some light rain. but not enough to cause any problems on the roadways. so overall i think you're looking fine. here is a live picture right now from san francisco, city hall all decked out for the holidays. a beautiful view there. live doppler 7 right now showing you just a lot of cloud cover. and we are seeing a few sprinkles up around ukiah. visibility right now low in santa rosa, down to a half a mile. it is foggy there. so watch out tomorrow morning. five miles in half moon bay if your drive tomorrow morning for the holidays takes you through these areas, or if you're heading towards the central valley, you will want to watch out. it was a mild to warm afternoon. warm enough to set a new record

in san jose. 76 degrees. low 70s from concord, cloverdale, san francisco, redwood city, moffet field, santa cruz in the 70s. if you're doing some traveling, you're going to get even warmer than that. record-setting day in southern california, including los angeles. tomorrow is still warm. not as warm as today. 89 degrees. 91 this palm springs. this looks like more like late spring, early usummer. no downtown it. up to eureka, showers. monterey, should be a nice mild 70s. temperatures right now really. look at these 60s right around the coast and bay. we do have a little bit of a south wind. that moist flow comin ing. and that's what is keeping our temperatures up along with the cloud cover. exploratorium camera showing a beautiful view of san francisco, all ready for the holiday. mild thanksgiving. we're looking at dry conditions for black friday shoppers. and rain is back friday saturday niegd into sunday. fog is concerning. do watch out in patchy and dense in spots. mid 40s to the mid-50s there will be certainly a lot of cloud cover around.
