>> just to help people. >> that would be thankful person number four in a region redefining the concept. abc7 news. thousands took in a warm thanksgiving meal at san francisco's glide memorial church today. volunteers showed up early at glide's kitchens to prepare a traditional meal with all the fixings. more than 5,000 meals were served today. it is the first thanksgiving for the new president and ceo, karen hanrahan. she said she is inspired by the sebls of generosity and community the annual tradition helps foster. and down the street, st. anthony volunteers prepared hundreds of turkey dinners for san francisco's homeless and hungry. the dining room located in the tender loin has served special holiday meals since 1950. president trump is celebrating his first thanksgiving in office with calls and face-to-face meetings with members of the military. the president and first lady

melania trump made a surprise thanksgiving visit entering the small kitchen area in florida. and there he thanked members of the u.s. koeg and did not miss an opportunity to talk about the economy. >> it is nice to see something that's really starting to work. we've cut back so much on regulation and all the waste and abuse. the stock market on friday hit the all time high. >> president trump also spoke this morning by video teleconference to u.s. service members stationed overseas in afghanistan, iraq, turkey, bahrain and aboard the uss monterey. passing along gratitude from americans on this thanksgiving holiday. >> volunteers are helping shelters and churches to share churches all across the bair. there's something else. the homeless are boosting their spirits. how that is being done. >> at the reason some of the

encampments appear abandoned is because the homeless have someplace special to go on thanksgiving. the san jose city team has been providing meals all day made from scratch. >> we have' salad, we have our vegetables, home made stuffing, we have our nice cranberry sauce. >> there's no lining up. table service is provided by volunteers. it is an effort to show the homeless dignity. >> it is nice to help people. >> are you putting a lot of smiles on people's faces? >> i see a big smile on your face. >> however, it's more than about food. volunteers are washing feet and distributing shoes that have been donated over the last three months. >> nice arch support. these are shot. >> the old ones were hurting his feet. >> the stylists are also cutting hair. >> we know how good it fees for a female, a man, whoever it is. you feel 100%. you feel great. so being able to cut hair for them is really humbling.

>> city team has been operating in san jose for 60 years. >> the economy might be getting better for some. as you can see, we have a room full of people that does not reflect in their living. >> today they get a much needed boost. >> by the time thanksgiving comes the a close, city team will have served about 2,000 meals and they'll do it all the over again on sxchristmas and easter. in san francisco, the hundreds of volunteers who keep meals on wheels going. today, they fed 2,300 seniors. those on the receiving end have some wonderful stories to tell. abc7 news reporter met a diehard 49ers fan from the days when the team plays at kezar stadium. >> morning. >> martin jacobs was anxiously waiting for his thanksgiving lunch and dinner delivered by volunteers from meals on wheels. >> when you get older, it is

like playing a football game, getting tackled and getting up again. it has been every day, a blessing just to get up and to have another thanksgiving is wonderful. >> speaking of football, 74-year-old jacobs is a loyal 49ers fan who paid his way through come by selling peanuts and popcorn at kezar stadium. once home to the team. his obsession to the 49ers and the running back began when he was only 9 years old, thanks to his dog who took him to his first game. >> he said look at number 39. when i saw the way he ran, and he dazzled the fans, i said i just became a fan. >> those are the stories that volunteers for meals on wheels often listen to. some of them start very young. >> we go to their houses and talk. i like learning about them. this year we're going to seven people. it is all over the city. and like in different houses,

different places. >> the process of feeding people in need starts here. healthy meals are sealed and then packed in insulated travel bags. 600 volunteers will each travel to several homes to make their deliveries. each year the number of people they serve increases. >> people are finding it tough to make ends meet and the families are not close by. they moved out of the city. so they're coming together to create this wave of seniors who need support to stay in their homes. >> it is never too late to volunteer. meals on wheels delivers food every day. in san francisco, abc7 news. >> bargain hunters are ready for the black friday deals. >> yes, they are. let's check in with david with a first look at the accuweather forecast and what shoppers will encounter tomorrow. maybe even me tonight. >> absolutely. let's look at the black friday forecast. i hope you've had a nice thanksgiving.

in-store experience. so much so, some of these folks decided to ditch the turkey and hit the stores early. >> why are you here so early? >> the crowds. the crowds are late so you have to get here early. >> i like seeing things, trying them. on i like walking around and exploring. especially outlet malls because you get fresh air sflfl that said, it is a challenging time for brick and mortar stores, trying to lure in shoppers. that's why so many are offering deep, deep discounts. the stores still have one advantage. many desire to touch and feel before they buy. >> they're different. when you see them online versus in store. you might not like it or it might not fit you right. >> you can never exactly tell size. it is nice to go in person and try it on. >> here at livermore san francisco outlet mall, the strategy is to combine the good deals with being first. by opening a couple of hours

ed lee's decision to officially accept a statue representing so-called comfort women. comfort women were forced into sex slavery by the japanese military in the 1930s and 1940s. the statue was unveiled in september. one of the main groups behind the memorial said san francisco will not be bullied by the japanese government when it comes to protecting we will from sexual violence. there is been an ominous development in the missing submarine and the 44 crew members. they lost contact with it nine days ago. it now says a sound heard shortly before the sub lost contact is that consistent with a non-nuclear explosion. it has shattered hopes of finding the crew alive. the u.s. navy is taking part in the earth to find the vessel off the argentina coast. >> so have you ever shopped for a tv but find all the newer models confusing?
