the national retail federation expects sales to rise at least 3.6% and online spending to go up as much as 15%. the day after thanksgiving and black friday usually signifies the start of the holiday season. and that's definitely true in danville. a very special tree lighting. >> reporter: maybe you can't tell by the weather, all these short sleeves everybody is wearing. but truly the signs of the season are here. we are in downtown danville waiting for the 41st annual old oak tree lighting. and take a look at how big this is. 350 years old. this has been going on for 41 years. we have several hundred people already gathering in anticipation of the lights going on at about 6:15. even though this is quite a grand event with face painting hot cocoa and hot cider, there are signs of the holidays all over the bay area.

we have an update on a story we told but two weeks ago. a study into the tiny bits of plastic polluting san francisco bay. the world economic forum predicts if current trends continue, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050 in terms of weight. today, we take you along as scientists track the threat. this weird looking contraption is skimming the surface of san francisco bay. >> this is the same device we've

used to sample over 60,000 miles across the world's oceans. >> long white net is designed to capture tiny bits of plastic. many are too small to see but big enough to cause serious environmental problems. as abc7 news reported, preliminary research found micro plastic in the guts of some local fish that could end up on your dinner plate. eating even small amounts of plastic may not be healthy. >> plastic in the ocean is able to attract chemicals. it is like a sponge for contaminants. >> now the san francisco astoria institute is trying to find out how widespread the problem is with a much bigger study. they're looking for micro plastic all over the bay. in protected sanctuaries outside the golden gate and storm drains and waste treatment plants.

and then the next storm which rank twos on the storm impact scale. it will be periods of heavy rain from time to time. a half inch to one inch of rain will fall for most bay area locations. we'll see one to two inches and that's where the strongest winds will blow. in the higher elevations, gusts up to 50 miles an hour. a few passing high clouds. producing gusty winds. by 6:00, most of the bay area will be getting the results of the storm. so look for the morning to midday hours. down into the south bay. producing in that region, heavy rain in some areas and strong
