ring. it was quick. prince harry designed it, and it's a trio of diamonds and it is from bot swau in diamonds are from diana's personal collection. we'll get more answers in just a bit. let's get right to terry moran with the latest on the big announcement. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, guys. this announcement has been long expected. rumors swirling for weeks, but it's still big news and it's happy news. just the sight of the two of them in the garden here at the palace. yes, they are a royal couple, but it's clear they are also a loving couple and that's always good news. theirs is a very modern once upon a time tale. a love story that is improbable, very traditional, but also very 21st century. just moments ago, the first glimpse of the newly engaged

royal couple. >> how are you guys feeling? >> thrilled. >> reporter: the photo op lasted only two minutes, but we learned a few details. the and he knew she was the one. >> when did you know she was the one? >> the very first time we met. >> reporter: then meghan showed off that ring. prince charles' office made the announcement earlier this morning. >> thank you very much. they will be very happy indeed. >> reporter: the couple got engaged earlier this month, and the wedding will take place next spring. they will live at noddingham college. he received the blessing of the fiancee's parents.

he responded with delight saying in a statement they were very excited for harry and meghan. it has been wonderful getting to kn know meghan and see how happy they are together. they were at the invictus games together. >> you have done it. you are invictus. >> reporter: their love has been on full display. >> prince harry is a hugely popular figure. possibly the most popular member of the family that there is. this is a beautiful actress who is american who has appeared and known around the world will be a huge spectacle, and actually, it could even eclipse william and kate. >> reporter: the 36-year-old actress stole the heart of the 33-year-old prince with the "suits" star stationed in toronto for filming. >> i want to get married, but i also really care about what i do. >> reporter: they opened up to "vanity fair" saying, we're two

people, and we're in love. nothing about me changed. i'm still the same person that i am, and i never define myself by my relationship. >> meghan got her fairy tale ending. he is on actress and she is playing her most important role to date. she will be a real life princess on the world stage. >> reporter: their love started in 2016 making it official in november. quietly by the prince's side for events like polo matches, and p pippa's wedding in may. the upcoming nuptials will most likely be filled with royal tradition. >> the wedding will fall in the pattern of royal wedding. harry would love to do it in secret on a beach or probably in africa, but he knows that's one thing he will not get away with. he is a member of the royal family, and fifth in line to the throne.

he has to have a royal and public wedding. >> reporter: just judging from the assembly of the media here, and the world who have come out on this raw day to witness this royal history, this will be very, very big indeed. this is a very improbable -- in the olden days, this marriage of a royal prince -- here are the dogs out here having a fight. of a royal prince to an american, a divorcee, mixed race background and as she would be described, that would not have passed royal muster, but here we are. there is no sense, no doubt the sense is good on you, harry. he is a beloved member of the royal family as we heard. people want this -- this couple to be welcomed into the royal family and into their roles. once upon a time, this would have been an improbable marriage, but it is one that prince harry has come to on a

long journey. he has had his ups and downs over the years. he has had public scandal of sorts and he has had a struggle. he has acknowledged -- one of the reasons people are attached to prince harry is he has been frank of the after-effects of the death of his mother. here we are on a happy day. london is happy, and it certainly looks at if this marriage is going to be a world event. back to you guys. >> terry, thanks so much. prince harry and meghan markle's family saying, we are very excited for harry and meghan. it has been wonderful getting to know meghan and seeing how happy they are together. and meghan markle's parents have said, we are happy for harry, and our daughter has been a kind and loving person. to see her union with harry who shares the same qualities is a

joy. we are excited for their future together. >> let's bring in victoria murphy. give us some inside scoop, victoria. when did this go down? how did he ask the question? what else can you tell us? >> reporter: i would love tosh able to tell you exactly when he popped the question, but all we know at the moment is harry proposed in london earlier this month. these are the things i think we will find out in just a few hours when the couple gave this long-awaited television interview. when they will tell us how harry proposed and we will get to see what we want to see, which is her ring. >> oh, yes. we will be looking for that for sure. the queen has given her blessings on this engagement. do we know about the relationship between meghan and the queen right now? >> reporter: we know that meghan has met the queen. prince harry is very close to his grandmother, and he was keen to make sheure meghan met her, d

they got to know each over, however, the queen has made a statement that she is tighted along with prince phillip, and so the family really is really excited and very much behind this relationship. >> i have read that the couple bonded over her work in rwanda, and africa. harry has been so active there. be she be able to continue that work and her work as an actress or no acting? >> she will be able to continue the humanitarian work. that's one of the things they bonded over. one thing that attracted harry to meghan was her genuine passion for this charity work and to make a difference, which is what he wants to do. the acting work, very difficult. it will be difficult for her to be on screen, and act out scripts she doesn't have control over. i don't see it happening. >> will she have official duties as prince harry's wife? >> of course.

definitely. like kate, they will want to ease her into official life. what we are probably seeing between now and a wedding is two, three public engagements alongside prince harry, getting her used to knowing the ropes and following the wedding, they will probably make overseas tours together, and she will start to build up, like kate has done, her own program events and own charities and be a working member of the royal family. >> we have been told she will be known as the duchess of sussex. what do we know about the ceremony? >> reporter: the ceremony -- we have yet to hear about, but it may be out of the chapel at windsor, but it will bear the stamp of both these people who are very different kinds of royals. prince harry has grown up in front of us, and he has always carried with him in a very human way, full of his humor, his failings. in some ways, what he had when

questions and apologizing on camera, telling wcco about sexual allegations brought against him. >> i'm not going to make any excuses. i am embarrassed and ashamed of some of what has come out. >> reporter: franken's public mea culpa comes ten days after leeann tweeden says he forcibly kissed her and groped her on a uso tour. tweeden telling robin why she came forward. >> i wanted him to understand what he did was wrong. >> reporter: franken said he is ashamed and reached out to tweeden. >> i apologized to her and i meant it and she was gracious enough to accept my apology. >> reporter: three other women, including 33-year-old lindsey

menz says she was a victim of groping. this was at the state fair. >> you think it was clear he knew what he was doing? >> i think it was, absolutely. >> reporter: franken says he has apologized to all the women who felt violated. he said he doesn't remember the other cases. >> i don't remember these particular photos. >> reporter: when asked if he has placed a hand on a woman's backside -- >> i take thousands of thousands of photos. it's sometimes chaotic situations. i can't say i haven't done that. >> reporter: his wife of more than 40 years, along with his four children are all supporting him, and he has no plans to resign. he was a writer and performer on "saturday night live." >> i'm good enough. i'm smart enough and people like me. >> reporter: 36 people from that show, former, current cast and crew signed a letter supporting

him saying he never acted that way around him. >> this was before franken ran for public office, but also after he was a sophomore in high school. not like he didn't know any better. he was only 55. >> reporter: he was asked if he thinks more women will come forward, but he said he doesn't know because the initial women have been a shock to him and his family. >> let's go to mary bruce, and our chief white house correspondent, jon karl. in the meantime, republicans in the senate are still running away from their senate candidate, roy moore, down in alabama, but not president trump. >> reporter: republican leaders in the senate have almost to a person, disavowed roy moore, and they have tried to find every possible way to get a republican challenger for him on the ballot or as a write-in candidate. the president moves closer and

closer every day to an outright endorsement of moore. over the weekend, he was tweeting about the alabama senate race attacking moore's democratic opponent saying, the last thing we need in alabama and the u.s. senate is a schumer/pelosi puppet who is weak on crime, bad on our military, and needs vets. it's interesting he doesn't mention moore by name in those tweets, but it's clear he wants roy moore to win that senate race in two weeks in alabama. >> no question about this. in the meantime, mary bruce, on the house side democrats have their own scandal. forced to step down from that position, and ethics looked against him. senior republicans caught up in him as well. >> reporter: these are dominating the conversation up here, and we are beginning to see some consequences. john conyers is out of his leadership position at least for

now while an ethics investigation continues into these allegations that he sexily harassed his former staffers, the 27-term congressman denies these claims and isn't giving up his seat. he looks forward to vindicating himself. while joe barton is also under scrutiny while he apologized for a lewd photograph of him online, so much so we can't even show it. he says it was from a consensual relationship. he threatened the woman if she went public, and this is just the beginning. >> this is the beginning of the revelations on capitol hill, and it's a packed december. >> reporter: the list of unfinished business for lawmakers up here is pretty brutal. first up, they want to pass tax reform. then they also need to avert a government shutdown, determine the fate of dra.r.e.a.m.ers, an that is just some of the list. president trump will be up here

couple, it was meghan markle stepping onto the royal stage, and this is a difficult role she is going to assume. the last american actress to go royal, grace kelly. that turned into something of a fairy tale of her. the last one to marry into thisi family, was wallace simpson and her relationship with king edward viii forced his abdication. one thing we know about meghan markle that her whole life demonstrates whatever she does, she does her way. >> i love you, too. and at this moment, i don't care who knows. >> reporter: her character on "suits" is engaged to be married and now in real life meghan markle prepares to say "i do" to prince harry. prince charles' office announced this morning that prince harry will marry the woman he once referred to as his ideal girl, long before he met her. the wedding will take place sometime this spring. royal watchers wondering if they are going to hold out for a may wedding after the duchess of cambridge gives birth to her third child in april. prince william and the duchess said it's been wonderful getting to know meghan. and to see how happy she and harry are together.

pending nuptials. >> all she would require of a daughter-in-law is someone that loved and was devoted to her sons. and she would only be blessed for that. >> reporter: you get the sense here in london that the people are really rooting for them both. really the only thing you can say to meghan markle as she steps into this role is good luck to you. >> all right, terry, thank you. we have sky news royal correspondent rhiannon mills joining us from kensington palace, as well. and rhiannon, how much if any controversy surrounds who meghan markle is? american? divorced? >> hey, do you know what i think? people are really just excited that prince harry has finally found the one that he wants to settle down with. yeah, you mentioned the fact she is an american, she is a divorcee. but also the first mixed race woman to be marrying into the royal family, as well. but actually i think that makes it a lot more interesting in terms of her profile now within the royal family. she's also out there as an activist and enthusiastic about her charity work and she's spoken out. hasn't she, about women's rights she's spoken out about equality.

and i think that is what's going to make her a really interesting addition to the royal family and today we have already had the queen, prince charles and also prince william and kate welcoming her to the family. >> she seems to have stepped right into it. we've been calling it a whirlwind romance. no ups and downs at all. all up. >> yeah, it's only 16 months. it is remarkable. but what really interests me, a couple of years ago, i interviewed prince harry and i asked a rather cheeky personal question. he doesn't like talking about his personal life but said, look, you've seen your brother and sister-in-law settling down having children. they just had princess charlotte and i said, do you want to settle down. and this was two years ago. he said to me, i would love to have kids right now but there is a process you have to go through. he also talked about how he thinks he does the royal duties quite well. that he would love to have someone by his side and now we know who that woman will be. it's meghan markle. >> there's a process you have to go through. >> that's one way to put it. how did they meet? talk us through the initial romance and how they found each other.

>> so it's quite low key really for a prince -- they were introduced by a mutual friend, marcus anderson, at the soho house which is a private members club here in london. and after that, we understand, they got on particularly well at that dinner. and then they started going out on a few dates. prince harry, of course, has been so careful to keep that relationship as private as possible. it's not always been easy, obviously he's got such a high profile presence of his own and she's got that high-profile career, as well. but they have managed quite well, i think, to try to keep it under wraps. but of course, it was that "vanity fair" interview that meghan markle did. what was "it"? back in october that she said they were very much a couple in love. but she also talked about how this is is a time for them, that they wanted to keep it as private as possible. and she said at the time eventually they would have to share that with the rest of the world and today they are sharing it with the rest of the world and we are expecting them to take part in a photo call later on this afternoon.

back now with that blockbuster report about sexual assaults at the largest massage franchise in the country, massage envy. abc's linsey davis has the story. >> reporter: it's the largest chain of massage franchises in the country. >> whether you're looking to prevent stress, relieve pain -- >> reporter: but this morning according to a buzzfeed news investigation, massage envy -- a company which has nearly 1,200 spas, more than 20,000 massage therapists, $1.3 billion in

annual sales and more than 1.6 million members nationwide -- is reportedly facing allegations that more than 180 women were sexually assaulted at its locations. >> the day changed my life. forever. >> reporter: susan ingram says she was assaulted during her seventh massage with therapist james deiter and she's now suing. >> i was just totally traumatized with sadness, pain, sobbing. >> reporter: as part of her lawsuit, ingram alleges she called the salon after the incident once she got home, and then learned deiter was with another client, but that the salon refused to interrupt the session. >> i said, please, go down the hall, knock on that door, get that woman away from him. she said, i can't do that. >> reporter: deiter is now in jail after pleading guilty to assaulting nine women while working at massage envy. ingram alleges she was put at risk because she alleges massage

envy knew of at least one incident prior to her alleged assault. danielle dick is suing massage envy for more than $2 million after she says her massage therapist grabbed her by the head. put his hands over her mouth and assaulted her. >> i was at a national massage chain. i was at a massage envy. and you never think something like this is going to happen. >> reporter: in her lawsuit, dick alleges she immediately reported the incident to the desk manager who says the massage therapist would be suspended. >> each time i said we need to call the police, she responded by saying that massage envy will handle it internally. >> reporter: she says she reported it to the police herself leading to her assailant's arrest and conviction. according to buzzfeed massage envy claims in court documents that it is not liable for sexual assaults at its franchise spas. >> the specific allegations of sexual assault outlined in the lawsuits against massage envy are really, really horrifying. >> reporter: overnight, massage

envy told abc news, each of these incidents are heartbreaking for us. even one incident is too many. we are constantly listening, learning, and looking at how we can do more, including how we support franchised locations with best practices in handling these incidents and supporting their clients. ingram has been pushing hard for a federal law requiring that massage facilities have to report sexual assaults to police. a version of the bill is now in front of congress which could put violators in prison for up to six months. amy and george. >> all right, linsey, thanks. this is really shocking. let's bring in our chief legal analyst, dan abrams. the big question is whether or not massage envy, not just the franchises, should be held liable or could be. >> there's no question these women will sue the individual franchises, right? if what they're saying is true they'll have strong lawsuits. the bigger question, will they be able to get at the corporate parent, so to speak? there's something called the day-to-day operations test. are they involved day to day in the operations of that business? are they involved with the

the gardens here. prince harry and meghan markle, an american of mixed race background, a divorcee, and what would have been described as a commoner, but clearly, very much in love. that's what this country is already embracing that this is a love match. the wedding set some time next spring. that's right around when the next royal baby is due. prince william and the duchess of cambridge expecting their third child, and next week will be a busy one for this royal family, but right now, all the focus and really all the good wishes of a country that loves prince harry towards this new couple. they have been together since 2016. in royal terms, that's a whirlwind romance and they are now off to the races. >> so much royal news to be had. terry, thank you so much. meghan's father was a lighting director in hollywood. he worked on "general hospital" for 35 years, and she was on the set of "married with children,"

all everyone is talking about so the news of prince harry getting engaged to meghan markle broke overnight. and already, the royal speculation has begun, from when will they do it? where will they do it? what they will be called? "vogue" is answering that saying harry and meghan will become the duke and duchess of sussex. and there are already several articles online just in the last couple of hours, with lists of meghan's bridal party. yeah. i'm sure she hasn't given this a thought yet but on the internet there's tons of speculation and a lot of the names are women who have been longtime pals from college or meghan's early days as an actress. a few names you might recognize. how about serena williams? yeah. markle wrote on her blog the tig, which is now defunct, that serena has become a close confidant since they met three years ago. caveat, three years ago. and also mentioned priyanka chopra with whom she's pictured several times on social media. the two obviously have a lot in common with acting but share a

passion with helping others. they are both ambassadors and they both spent time in rwanda. and we could likely see meghan's dear friend of a long time. public royal engagement at the invictus games in september, seen holding hands. with markle's mother joining the couple in a private box. they even took a romantic birthday trip for meghan to africa. now, they're engaged and that means meghan markle's family is bringing some american flair to her new royal in-laws. her mother doria is a social worker and yoga instructor. her father, thomas, is an emmy award-winning lighting director. markle often posts throwback photos with her parents on social media. >> she will be the first biracial princess in the british mon monarchy. and that's an amazing development. >> reporter: she has a half-sister and half-brother on her father's side. but she reportedly isn't close to them. >> she didn't grow up alongside them or live in the same house with them for very long. >> reporter: although her parents split when she was 2, she's still close to them, telling "vanity fair" in september, i never saw them fight. we would still take vacations together. my dad would come on sundays and drop me off. we would watch "jeopardy!" together. eating dinner on tv trays, the

big problem. >> reporter: though she's done enough to win over the royal family, and more importantly, her future husband, prince harry. and now, only the first six people in line have to ask the queen's permission. harry is number six. so he did need her approval. my favorite part about all this lara and amy, he asked her parents as well. >> i love that. so exciting. thank you so much, diane. we want to bring in duncan larcombe who just wrote a book on prince harry. and our royal contributor, victoria murphy again. again, we want to ask you, what is meghan markle in for now that she has signed up for this? >> wow, well, it can be pretty daunting marrying into the royal family and obviously as you can see from today there's a lot of interest in the royal family. it can be maybe a bit like a cage, albeit a gilded cage, with all eyes on you. and will of course now, when she marries harry, be expected to carry out official duties. expected to be a working member of the royal family taking on

charities, attending events and supporting the queen and other royals in that. >> duncan, it has been a long road to love for harry. we've been documenting it very steadfastly here in america. but tell us why meghan markle is the one for him. how did she steal his heart? >> well, i think when news of meghan's relationship with harry first broke last year, she didn't seem to tick any boxes. an american divorcee. with a million followers on twitter on instagram. actually, every single month that has gone by since then, she's seemed more and more perfect for him. i think we all get it now. she might have to stop her role as an actress on "suits" but i think her role as an actress on a global stage is just about to begin. >> yeah, absolutely. i want to ask victoria about that. what will her duties entail? >> well, i think what we'll see in the next few months before the wedding is that we'll see a

gradual buildup of duties. so she'll make maybe two or three official appearance with harry. and they can be anything from attending the opening of a school or a hospital, meeting the people there. to supporting a specific charity. we already know that meghan has a lot of charitable interests. she's done work with the u.n. and worldvision. and a lot of things she might want to bring in as she grows her role in the royal family. and then of course, when they're married they'll do tours, they'll travel the world like william and kate have done visiting commonwealth countries and other countries around the world. and really being ambassadors for britain and for the royal family. >> so many firsts with this couple. and so a lot of people want to know what this wedding will look like. will it be more modern than william and kate's? will it be as tradition imposes on them? what are the rules for them? and can they break them and do whatever they want? we want to know what the wedding will look like. >> yeah, i think if harry had his way he'd get married in a small church, have a few beers afterwards with a small group of

friends. that's not going to happen. after the queen he is the most popular british royal and the public love him. i think it's going the to be more like 2 billion on tv again like his brother. >> wow, really? do you think -- they've talked about the fact that harry is so different and she is american. do you think that we'll see some american flourishes? or do you think this will be steeped in royal history? >> i think there will be a lot of royal traditions followed. like william and kate, it will be a huge wedding. probably televised. and a lot of pomp and circumstance. the british military, the pageantry that we saw surrounding william and kate will all get involved. however, you know, harry does like to do things his own way to a certain extent, and i think he will want to put his own stamp on the day, and so will meghan, and i expect that we will see some personal touches. think the best part of the day will probably really be the after-party, but unfortunately,

highlights. showers to mostly shine this afternoon. clouds will fade. watch out for the dense fog tomorrow morning during the commute. looks like it could be wet this weekend. check out temperatures about 59 to 62 for most of us. mid 50s around lake port. tonight upper 30s in our valleys. low to mid 40s in the bay and coast. 50 in san francisco. we are in the middle of holiday season which means lots of great food that could make dieting difficult. many start dieting in advance. but it turns out that can actually backfire. and our chief medical correspondent dr. jen ashton is here. and, jen, before we start, i have a quick question for the audience. how many of you by a show of hands are now dieting today after indulging over this past thanksgiving? i'm already seeing -- yeah. >> oh, wow. >> that's about right. okay. so people say, jen, you can try to watch what you eat before a holiday party. it sounds like a good plan but it can actually turn against

you? >> it can and i'll explain why. it's a very complicated process, dieting. it's not as simple as calories in, calories out. so take a look at this. what happens in general when people start to diet. their weight may drop a little. that produces an increase in the hunger hormones. people are hungrier. less full. your metabolism actually slows down so that your body can restore itself to its equilibrium. which unfortunately, is its heaviest weight. it's called the set point theory. so starting around holiday time not the best time to start an aggressive diet. >> then you have to -- if you put fewer calories in your body regulates then you add more calories because you indulge because you have this at the table. you have a three-bite rule. >> yeah. so listen, i want to be clear. everyone needs to find -- you want some of this at the end? what works for them and this is by no means scientific rigor but a three-bite rule basically means, if you go to a party, you'll see tempting things like this. take three bites and move on.

if you are talking about three bites of a delicious cheesecake, that's almost half the slice. >> that's a huge slice, by the way. >> or you could share it with someone. then you'll hear other tips like eat before you go so you're not ravenous. i think also, you know, i practice something that i find works really well, which is, if you just keep talking a lot, you're not going to be able to eat a lot. >> or keep a sparkling water in your hand, think that helps too. >> you can't put food in your other hand if you're holding a glass so it's about finding a trick, having a plan in advance that will work for you. there's no right or wrong. >> how about a plan afterwards. best way to burn it off. >> you have to be active. everyone has a phone with an app. track your steps. walk to and from the party. this is a great time of year to start something new like a group cardio class that can be fun with friends. then when you get back to work the next day please use the stairs. every little bit helps. >> great advice. thank you very much, jen. coming up next we have a 12-year-old piano prodigy who has captured so many hearts. this is going to be such a treat.

organist, as well, and that kind of rekindled your passion for the piano. this is something else. not only is he playing on "gma" this morning and carnegie hall yesterday. you also played the organ at st. patrick's cathedral. >> yes, it was -- it was -- [ cheers and applause ] ♪ it was just absolutely amazing there. just being able to control this huge wall of sound that covers the entire cathedral was just incredible. >> so you're 12 years old, carnegie hall, st. patrick's. how are you going to top this? >> i honestly have no idea.
