>> they simply did not pay attention to take care of the property. >> wayne freedman, abc 7 news. a water main break in san francisco is causing a big traffic mess tonight. sky 7 was above second and harrison streets about an hour ago. officials are urging drivers to avoid the area if they can. a captured fugitive from the santa clara county jail, appeared in the same pail low alto court today from where he escaped. he pleaded not guilty to the original armed robbery charges against him. he and a second inmate escaped november 6th. bivens was captured in san leandro last sunday. the other inmate was captured in

stockton. i did not enter a plea and was assigned a public defender. >> the jury in the steinle murder trial ended another day without a verdict. abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez is live where she's been every day of this trial. >> this trial began on october 23rd, now. when they began deliberating, remember the first day was a short day. they have to get their things in order. the second day was also a short day because of the thanksgiving holiday. when you think about it, the jury has had only two full days of deliberation and going through the entire case. >> it's not unusual for deliberations in a murder trial to take weeks. according to former alameda county d.a. >> if they came back today, i would say that was a quick

internet, and did not take any of the 3,000 images deputies say they found on his computer. >> a san leandro police officer is out of a job, accused of unlawful sexual acts with a 17-year-old. the program is for young people interested in pursuing law enl forcement careers. the misconduct happened while he was offduty. the officer has resigned from the san leandro police department. >> in san jose, pet owners are on edge tonight after learning two cats were shot with arrows, now, animal services has released a picture of one of the attacks in hopes of catching the person responsible. a warning, this image is very disturbing. chris wynn is in an upscale neighborhood. >> reporter: they really need to be keeping my eyes even more

in san francisco today. attorneys for kareem baritov say he was a minor player in the scheme, organized by russian intelligence officers. three russian men are also accused. more than half a billion yahoo accounts were exposed. the russians hired him to hack 80 g mail accounts. he only hacked 8. >> he didn't have knowledge of who these individuals were or what they were doing. he didn't have knowledge -- the names he was given, that information was derives from the yahoo hack. >> he pleaded guilty to eight counts of identity theft. he faces a maximum of 9 years in prison. >> after five days of holiday shopping, today is the designated day to give. not just your money, also your time. see what a difference giving

just in to our newsroom. minutes ago, the san francisco board of supervisors voted to rescind the sale of presidio terrace, the private street in the wealthy san francisco neighborhood that wayne freedman told us about. the supervisor's vote was 7 yes votes to four no votes. ownership of the street goes back to the homeowners at least

for now. nonprofits across the bay area are raising money with a campaign dubbed giving tuesday. it gives people the opportunity to find adoptive homes for animals or serving food to the homeless. people who are benefiting from giving tuesday. >> reporter: a nonprofit hoping to raise $10,000 on this giving tuesday. in many ways, the donations are more than money. they help people like david moffet who was homeless for 10 years, he cleans up trash as part of a program that has put him on the right track by giving him purpose. >> i was a drug addict before. i know that doing this gets me up, and i look forward to doing it. and it's just a good opportunity for a lot of people. >> there are so many choices. there are 1 1/2 million

registered nonprofits in the u.s. >> i think it's important that everybody gives to the charity of their choice. i know a lot of our donors feel connected with downtown streets team. it's important if another nonprofit or another movement is more to your calling that you give, nonetheless. >> giving tuesday is also about volunteerism. beverly donates time to the human society of silicon valley, where she socializes the cats and dogs available for adoption. and helps to match them with families. >> i get much mooar back from it than i give to it. >> so it's a -- it just makes life more joyful. >> the shelter has 1300 volunteers, many put in an average of five years. the humane society uses social media to accept donations. >> there's so much passionate this shelter, you wouldn't believe, the fact that we're all working toward the same goal makes it incredibly special. >> there are other ways to participate in giving tuesday, including donating food, clothing and blood. in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news.

>> the numbers are in over the holiday weekend. more than 174 million americans shopped either in stores or online. according to the national retail federation, that's more than expected. 64 million shopped both in stores and online. the two most popular days for shopping in stores were black friday and small business saturday. online, black friday and cyber monday. shoppers spent an average total of $335 between thursday and yesterday. one deal doesn't have a dollar figure, the amount the firm we work paid to buy weta. it's a real estate company best known for creating shared work spaces. it's just the latest in a string of we work tech and real estate acquisitions, which include the lord & taylor store where we

range, 55 to 57 degrees at oakland. mountain view and half moon bay. another view from our emeriville camera, looking west across the bay. 58 degrees in concord, 53 in livermore. here's a little bit more of the financial district from our rooftop camera at abc 7. it will be chilly again tomorrow morning, not quite so cold as it was this morning. mild and sunny days through friday morning. overnight, once again, we'll see temperatures dropping down into the chilly range, up in the north bay, where we had lows this morning in the mid-30s, tomorrow morning, look for upper 30s, modest improvement there, inland areas in the east bay and south bay, we'll see lows around 40 degrees. lows will range from low to mid-40s. this is the outlook for the next few days from accuweather

showing a huge ridge of high pressure, keeping most of the western u.s. dry storms will still hit the pacific northwest, we'll see showers there, maybe a couple heavy downpours. possibly rumbling thunder. as the storm out at sea is triggering that weather. it's producing rough surf in the bay area. a beach hazard alert will be in effect as wave heights grow to between 10 and 14 feet. up to our north, wave heights even higher. because of this storm brewing up in the gulf of alaska, it's one that's going to produce the stormy weather in the pacific northwest, for the bay area, looks like it produces a minimal chance of rain for us over the weekend. tomorrow, look for highs in the

tonight pope francis is attracting controversy in the medicine of the of the first ever papal visit to the nation of myanmar. he gave a speech this afternoon, but does not mention what amounts to ethnic cleansing by the military. the pope called for peace. nearly 1 million muslim refugees are living in camps and tell abc news horrific details of burned homes and if the pope had mentioned the persecution, he

on the tax plan tomorrow. people gathered at the capital to protest the measure's provision to eliminate the obamacare mandate that every american has health insurance. >> if the bill works the way i think, all these loud people will have proven to be loud. i will be proven to be right. if it doesn't do what i think it will do, we will lose. those earning less than $100,000 a year, will likely see tax cuts. the battle over who's heading up the consumer protection agency continues.

the water main break that's been slowing down traffic in san francisco all afternoon has been repaired. >> the city tweeted about this minutes ago. what a mess the break made on second and harrison streets, only about an hour ago, as folks were trying to get home. the break which happened around 6:00 this morning, was likely caused by old pipes. if you've driven through san francisco lately, you've no doubt had to goth a few uber or lyft cars parked on streets. they include sections of clement street in the inner richmond, chestnut street in the marina, bay street in north beach, two sections of howard street as well as portions of hayes street and hayes valley. 24th street and irving street in the inner sunset. here's jonathan bloom with more.

teaming up with local fire departments, the home depot and kidde. the nation's largest supplier of fire protection products. it seemed especially fitting today to announce the generous gift of 4400 smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. >> i can cannot think of a better way to celebrate the national day of giving. doing it here with you. and donating alarms to save lives. >> reporter: according to the national fire protection association, three out of five deaths from house fives happen when there's no smoke alarm or when it's not working. sometimes that's due to forgetfulness. >> there's a chirping noise, you take the battery out, forget about it. >> those who will receive free smoke detectors need to know how to respond.

the bay area's hothousing market could cool off a little next year. the california association of realtors says pending home sales in october hit the lowest level in six months. it was the fourth straight months of declines. the bay area saw the largest drop, more than 10% down from last year, more homes sold below asking price, and they were further below than they were a year ago. >> technology has become part of a daily routine, the toy aisle is no exception. >> michael finney checked out a couple recent high-tech offerings at a local trade show. >> they are all the deal. toys are combines of system education. toy makers are counting on parents shelling out big bucks for their child's education. >> reporter: playing with robots is only half the fun it's creators hope kids find building them is just as exciting.

the 49ers really made the obvious call today, jimmy garoppolo will make his first start for the red and goal. he's had a month to learn the playbook looked great in a very small sample size, touchdown pass, garoppolo replaces the rookie who has shown a lot of toughness, and led the niners to their lone win. it's ready to go, it's time to make the change, niners play the bears on sunday that will be a homecoming for garoppolo who grew up outside of chicago. michael crabtree had his suspension reduced by one game
