>> announcer: live where you live, this is abc 7 news. physically guard your mac. >> a warning tonight. it takes one word for anyone, not just hackers, to gain full access to many mac computers. now apple is working on an emergency fix tonight. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze in or ama daetz. it affects anyone using apple's high sierra. >> katie marzullo has details. >> this is like someone knock on the door, open door sesame and that's it. >> reporter: cyber security expert melody mao called apple's security flaw mind blowing. if your mac is running the latest version of the high sierra operating system a stranger could log in and gain total access by simply tighting "root" as the user name. >> you can do anything and

everything. you can delete information from the user's account. you can log his account. you can access his bank, his e-mail, his twitter, facebook, anything. >> reporter: apple unveiled high sierra on september 25th. it came preinstalled on a handful of computer models. >> people are loving sierra, and we love it too. so we wanted to spend this year perfecting it. >> reporter: apple released a statement that reads in part, "we are working on a software update to address this issue. in the meantime setting a root password prevents unauthorized access to your mac." the first several apple users we talked with here hadn't yet heard about the problem but those in the know have mixed feelings. >> computers are super complex, and you might look at something that seems dumb and we might find out later, well, not so dumb. >> i'm concerned about the fact the tech companies are not thinking carefully about issues of security. >> reporter: until the fix is ready, experts say mac users should not leave their computers unattended. in los gatos, katie marzullo,

abc 7 news. >> now, if you need apple's temporary fix we have the step-by-step directions on our website, abc7news.com. a canadian man accused in the massive yahoo e-mail hacking atack pleaded guilty in san francisco today. attorneys for 22-year-old kareem baratov say he was a minor player in the scheme, allegedly organized by russian intelligence officers. three russians are also accused. a federal indictment says more than half a billion yahoo! accounts were exposed. baratov's lawyers say the russia russians hired him to hack 80 g mail accouns as part of this scheme but he says he hacked only eight. >> he didn't have knowledge of who these individuals were or what they were doing. he didn't have knowledge that, you know, the names that he was given, that information was derived from the yahoo! hacking. >> baratov pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit computer fraud and eight counts of aggravated identity theft. sentencing is scheduled for february. he faces a maximum of about nine years in prison.

in developing news, north korea tonight claims its latest missile test put the entire u.s. in striking range. the missile launched earlier today reached the highest altitude of a north korean missile ever recorded. shortly after, president trump spoke with south korea's president to discuss the country's response. >> we will take care of it. it is a situation that we will handle. >> south korea's military conducted its own missile drills just minutes after north korea's launch was detected. here at home san jose police made an arrest after someone shot up an elementary school today. abc 7 news was in san jose where you can clearly see the bullet holes at bookson elementary school. early this morning neighbors say someone opened fire. a security camera captured an image of the gunman, who was arrested about 8:00 tonight. the campus was hit with the same type of vandalism over veterans day weekend. security has been increased at the school. pet owners in san jose are on edge tonight after learning two cats were shot with arrows.

animal services released this picture of one of the attacks. it's hard to watch and it's very sad. but they do hope it will help them catch the person responsible. neighbors in the willow glen neighborhood say one cat is now recovering from surgery after being hit in the abdomen. >> are you prepared to do the time for the crime? it's not a small thing to attack people's animals and endanger human lives. >> the other incident took place in october. that cat also survived. sources tell abc 7 news the arrows used in the two attacks appear to be similar. police are asking anyone with information about either attack to contact them. a car got stuck inside san francisco's sunset tunnel. it blocked trains from going in and out and caused delays on the muni line. service through the tunnel resumed about 6:30 tonight, nearly two hours after the car got stuck. this happened at least 26 times

since 2010, believe it or not. muni says it is working on a way to prevent drivers from entering the tunnel. neighbors want a street fight in an upscale area of san francisco. abc 7 news was at san francisco's presidio terrace, where wealthy homeowners are celebrating a vote this evening by the board of supervisors to overturn the sale of the street. it sold in auction after homeowners failed to pay about $1,000 in taxes. neighbors claim they were not properly notified of the delinquent tax bill. michael chang and his wife, tina lam of san jose, purchased the private street. >> what about my constitutional right to own property in america? is it because i'm not san franciscan, i cannot own something in the city? i still love it. >> justice was done here today. this is what the state allows, what state law allows. >> the former property owners now plan to go to court. also in the city a water main break that blocked traffic in san francisco's soma district

is now fixed. sky 7 shows you the large hole right in the middle of harrison and 2nd streets. the main burst this morning, flooding a basement. around 6:00 tonight right in the heart of the evening commute harrison was open again. the p.u.c. believes the pipes' age is to blame. gas service has been restored to all pg&e customers who lost it after an explosion in san francisco yesterday. abc 7 news was on mission street today, where the block was closed off. this afternoon crews released gas from the lines, then repaired the leak. an outside lernlging firm is look for the cause. a family who lost their home in yesterday's explosion posted these pictures of their smashed car to go fund me. they say all their belongings were destroyed. we posted a link to the go fund me on our website abc 7 news.com. new at 11:00, the lights in richmond are a little too bright. as far as the mayor is concerned. and he says neighbors agree and is now pushing to dim those lights. you'll see for yourself.

here's abc 7 news reporter elissa harrington. >> reporter: you've probably heard of noise pollution, but light pollution? it's something that richmond mayor tom butt is worried about. >> they're not annoyanced. they're things that really can have a physical effect on and you sometimes serious. >> reporter: mayor butt says there are too many artificial lights in the city from street signs and outside businesses that are way too bright. they're mostly the newer l.e.d. fixtures like these lights at a hotel on cutty boulevard and these ones at a gas company across the street. >> you know, it looks like the ones the immigration had over there on the border. to stop the people. >> reporter: there's also a cluster of lights at the rail yard that are not covered. >> they put so much light up in my yard, i can actually read a book at night on a moonless night. and it's gotten a lot worse in the last few months. >> reporter: mayor butt post aid note on next door and received a lot of feedback. he says the light pollution is causing some residents to lose sleep. >> i'm about half a mile away

and grabbed her by the neck. police detained him but have not charged him. the trump administration has authorized credentials for wintridge allowing him to attend white house briefings. the chairman of the fcc is hitting back at critics who say that repealing net neutrality would lead to authoritarianism. in a speech today ajit pai criticized the way many celebrities like cher have characterized his proposal to repeal many of the agency's net neutrality rules. pai says the repeal would bring back regulation-free policy that helped the internet thrive. he called big tech companies like twitter a bigger threat to online speech than telecom companies. net neutrality prevents an internet service provider from charging more to access certain websites. critics say repealing it would allow big internet service providers to favor their own content over others. the fcc is expected to vote along party lines to repeal net neutrality next month. public interest groups have already vowed to file suit if that happens. new at 11:00, a 12-year-old is taking this giving tuesday to a whole new level.

he has started a go fund me campaign to raise money for his beloved summer camp. camp newman was destroyed by the tubbs fire in santa rosa. abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has more on this extraordinary young man. >> that's you coming down the stairs behind the beit tefilah. >> reporter: avi shapiro first visited camp newman when he was 12 years old. the jewish summer camp in santa rosa is one of his favorite places. but on october 9th the tubbs fire destroyed it. >> i was like really devastated and i really wanted to do something. >> reporter: avi immediately got his laptop out and started this go fund me page. >> i felt that that was a good way to raise awareness about it and to raise some money for rebuilding because i want to go back to camp. >> reporter: it didn't take long before the donations started pouring in. 90% of the campus is damaged or destroyed. 20 years of memories at the camp

on porter creek road are gone. it's the place avi always dreamed of having his bar mitzvah. >> he just took that grief and put it into action. it was pretty crazy and amazing. >> reporter: the camp's executive director isn't surprised by any of this. >> heart of gold. he's so sweet. he loves camp. and lives and loves, breathes camp. >> reporter: camp newman has already secured a temporary spot to hold summer camp in 2018. lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. here's a look at avi's go fund me page. he's now raised, let's see, $8,732. so getting very close to his goal. we do have the link on our website, abc7news.com. a special tribute to the north bay fire victims is now on display at the san francisco symphony. dozens of 18-foot-tall christmas trees have been brought in to transform davy's symphony hall into a holiday extravaganza.

a group of san francisco families has sponsored one of the trees in honor of those who lost their homes in the fires. each ornament represents a contribution to fire relief efforts. >> i can't imagine how devastating it is to just lose everything, lose your heirlooms, lose your home, lose anything that's important to you. and i think the christmas spirit is of giving. and i think a lot of those families are feeling that now and hopefully we're helping them to feel that. >> so far the families raised more than $10,000 for the fire victims. they hope their tree will inspire even more donations. beautiful gesture and awfully kind. >> yes. all right. the weather has certainly been beautiful as well. but how much longer will it continue? >> ah. meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking it all for with us live doppler 7. >> have i let you guys down? don't answer that. thanks, dan and kristen. let's take a look at a sunset from tonight. this is from our santa cruz camera. and it is just a beautiful sunset. the sun went down at

4:52 tonight. you see the contrail going by. high, thin wispy clouds. and those wispy clouds made up of ice crystals definitely adding a little bit of color as that sun was beginning to set tonight. from our santa cruz camera. now, those high clouds are playing a role in holding some of the temperatures up tonight along with the breeze. so take a look at where your numbers are going to be heading. we'll start out. low 40s friday, saturday and then some colder mornings latter part of the weekend heading into early next week. but as i said, the wind is playing a role from our mount tamalpais camera. we have some gusty winds as we look back toward san francisco. that will hold the temperature up as well. live doppler 7 as well. no rain to speak of. and as we check out where we stand in rainfall percent of normal this is since october 1st we're about 99% of average in

santa rosa, sfo, oakland above 90% to 95%. san francisco downtown 78%. head out toward livermore, 71. and look at san jose. you're lagging behind at 64% of normal. temperatures right now in the 40s and the 50s. i think we can deal with that. here's what you need to watch out for. the wave heights are building right off the coast, 10 to 15 feet. we have some 20-footers just off the pacific northwest coast. and here along with where the storm is situated-e 30-foot waves. what's geg to happen is the surf is going to be up, it's going to be rough. watch out tomorrow. beach hazard statement for the coastline. strong rip current risk and northwesterly squalls expected between 10 to 14 feet. live look from our emeryville camera and visibility is good but you'll see patchy fog in the morning chilly inland milder afternoons the next two days and the weekend weather now trending dry. here's your 12-hour planner patchy fog and chilly inland tomorrow morning. sunshine for you at noon and even in the afternoon mild sunny

tonight call it mission possible for these two real-life supermen. in this video taken by red bull you can see fred fugen and vince rafet base jumping off a 14,000-foot mountain in the swiss apples but it's what they did next. >> as they were soaring to the ground they each jumped into a moving plane. the open hole was just five feet by four feet. the pair says they practiced more than 100 times before attempting this for real. i have one bit of advice for them. it was really incredible. quit while you're ahead. >> i jumped out of a plane before but jumping into a plane -- >> really? >> so did sandhya patel. you're the only two -- >> we're the two smart ones. >> we have a chance to live. >> i like living. >> is that wrong? >> i'm a terrible person

threw for a touchdown. with beathard now hobbling and jimmy g. appearing to be ready it's time. and it will be a homecoming for garoppolo, who grew up outside chicago. michael crabtree had his suspension cut in half today. the nfl knocked it down from two games to one. the penalty for inciting this brawl with aqib talib of the broncos. this is actually big news for the raiders because it means crab will be available in two weeks when the raiders play the chiefs and that should be a really important game. after losing to the lowly kings without their two mvps the warriors had steph curry and kevin durant back in practice today. the expectation is they will be able to go tomorrow night in l.a. both curry and durant listed as questionable. steph worked out today with a wrap on his bruised right hand. he's hoping he can play against lonzo and the lakers. >> the swelling's going down. it's still painful, but kind of have to deal with that as you go. especially with your hand. there's no real way to protect yourself. really if you're out there playing. hopefully by tomorrow the swelling will be gone and the -- i'll be able to deal with the
