no one's looking! live where you live, this is abc 7 news. they rendered a verdict to the best of their ablgities. >> it was a verdict we were not hoping for. >> not guilty. that is the verdict reached by a jury in the shooting death of kate steinle. what happens next to the man acquitted of her murder is up in the air and tonight, the president is weighing in. >> now, of course, this was a surprising verdict. after six days of deliberations, the jury decided that he did not intentionally kill kate steinle and found him only guilty of e possessing a gun. he was a immigrant from mexico who was deported and returned to san francisco, a sanctuary city.

donald trump sent out a tweet, a dis graceful verdict. >> we have live coverage. we are in kate steinle's hometown of pleasanton. let's begin with the hall of justice where she has been for every day of the trial. >> reporter: right, well, it took about the jury, about 28 hours to reach nothing this verdict, this has been a controversial case, no one on the jury wanted to talk to the press. their names and contact information have been sealed by the judge. surrounded by local and national media, the defense attorney send his sympathies to kate steinle's family and asking that the jury's verdict be respected. >> they deliberated as a group. they heard read back testimony, they looked at the physical

restaurant, or roofing or landscaping or construction. >> reporter: he said that he felt remorse for killing kate steinle. >> i'm sorry for to everyone. >> reporter: you feel sorry for everyone? including kate steinle's family? >> hm-mm, yeah. >> reporter: now, as for his weapons convictions. he still faces time in state prison. 16 months to three years for possessing a stolen gun. a judge will decide that steno in -- decide that sentence at a later date. abc 7 news. >> thank you, jose inez garcia zarate had mainly drug charges after arriving in the united states around 1991. he was first deported in 1994 and was convicted five times for reentering the united states.
