an accused murderer found not guilty. this morning reaction continues to pour in after the stunning verdict in the case over kate steinle's death. but first breaking news. former national security adviser michael flynn pleads guilty to lying the fbi and now he's prepared to testify against president trump about the cam pane's ties to russia. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. he admitted he directed his contacts with the russians.

we have the very latest from washington. >> former national security adviser michael flynn arrived in court this morning, pleading guilty after being charged with lying the fbi. the special counsel charged former trump's senior adviser with knowingly lying to the fbi about the nature of the infamous phone calls and texts between himself and sergey kislyak. one happened the same day the administration placed sanctions. that's the same call flynn was fired for lying the president about just one month into the job. the december 2016 calls raised red flags for the obama administration and advised trump against having >> things were said, things that were promised. >> but even after his firing, the president still supported

flynn. >> i don't think he did anything wrong. if anything he did something right. >> and former fbi director james comey said the president in private asked him to let the flynn investigation go. flynn faces up to five years in prison and is key in the investigation. >> there appears to be a lot of evidence around the president that they had interactions with them and they are violations of the law. >> george papadopoulos is now cooperating with the special counsel. it implicates no one other than mr. flynn but in court the prosecutors said he called senior members of the campaign in between the phone calls to the russian ambassador. >> and flynn released a statement after this morning's developments saying he seps full responsibility for his actions. he also said such false accusations are contrary to everything i've ever done and

stood for, but i recognize the actions i acknowledged in court today were wrong and through my faith in god, i'm working to set things right. the abc7 news pushed out pushedt alert. be sure to download the app to get push alerts as it happens. today we're tracking new developments in the stunning development of the kate steinle trial. the man acquitted yesterday may now face federal charges. he's due back in court on december 14th. a federal criminal warrant has been issued for zarate, and the sheriff says she will now notify the u.s. marshal service when he becomes eligible for release. it's drawing criticism in washington with the white house criticizing san francisco. online it's inspired a movement to boycott the city. and a memorial popped even overnight at pier 14 where

steinle was shot and killed two years ago with a poster of her surrounded by flowers and candles. let's go to amy hollyfield. amy? >> reporter: look at this bench. it was dedicated to her. now that the verdict is in, it's become a place to react and reflect. some runners out for their morning exercise stopped today when they saw this bench at 14 in san francisco surrounded by flowers and candles. many said they were focused on kate steinle, not about the man. jose ines garcia zarate faced possible murder or involuntary manslaughter charges. his defense argued he picked up a gun lying on the ground and it accidentally discharged.

the verdict angered misha neshek. >> it just breaks your heart. i can't imagine what her family must be feeling now. >> reporter: zarate was facing his sixth deportation, but san francisco is a sanctuary city and he was allowed to stay. >> i love this city but so many of the policies are just plain wrong and they do a disservice to the people who live here. i'm just saddened. it's a sad day. >> meshak is keeping the family in mind. she brought flowers to her bench and a message. >> maher memory be eternal. that's my message. and praying for her family. >> kate steinle's family was not in the courtroom when the verdict was read, but they spoke exclusively to the "san francisco chronicle" after the

pleasanton. the residents were following the case closely and can't agree with the outcome. >> i don't agree with the verdict that nothing happened. i think probably manslaughter or criminal negligence or something should have happened. >> reporter: but others are trying not to pass judgment on the jury. >> is justice served? who am i to say? i wasn't on the jury. those on the jury who didn't ongation. >> reporter: some residents think the jury will haunt the bay area. they say the city's sanctuary status protected the gunman who was undocument and deported five times. >> it puts bad reflection on the bay area as a whole because other states are going to look at this and say, here they're a sanctuary city, this guy's walking off scot-free.

>> reporter: steinle's family still live here in pleasanton. those who know the family did not want to speak out of respect for the family's privacy. >> thank you. and the white house is blaming san francisco's sanctuary city policy for enabling a killing to happen. it reads in part, politicians who fail to address these needs share the responsibility for crimes on americans. th if you're wondering what's next this case, here's what we can tell you right now. i.c.e. officials say they will work to take custody of jose ines garcia zarate and remove him from the country. that would happen after the oh ferns he was charged guilty being a felon with a gun.
