plaza. as you see, the maphe maphe roads are the screen. the box truck plowed into five cars approaching the toll gates. >> the toll plaza worker was killed in the crash. the truck driver is facing chanchlths. >> -- facing charges. >> we have more from the scene. >> reporter: the truck driver arrested on suspicion of dui and vehicular manslaughter who was behind the wheel of the box truck which, as you see, was ripped apart in this crash. the toll worker who was killed is a mother. she leaves behind her 10-year-old daughter and a husband. i'm told she lived in the east bay. >> the toll booth itself was completely wiped out. the other booths were damaged, but we should have them fixed by monday morning.

>> reporter: at the scene you see they are trying to get the area cleaned up. debris was spread out over six lanes of traffic. they're mopping it up. they're trying to get everything in order before they let cars go through. they closed ten chailanes total. six that go through the main toll plaza and two fast-track lanes only and two bus lanes. the driver of this rented box truck slammed into a line of cars at the bay bridge toll plaza after 5:00 a.m. saturday, then hit the booth and killed the caltrans worker inside who was collecting money. >> hit that very last car in line and then kind of caused a chain reaction. >> reporter: five other cars were badly damaged. here's one being towed from the scene. several people had to be rushed to the hospital including the driver of the truck, 32-year-old daniel burke, from foster city. he was arrested on suspicion of dui and vehicular manslaughter.

the toll booth worker has been identified as 46-year-old ceci hawn. the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed. the box truck ripped apart on impact. you see debris sprawled across six lanes of traffic. and the toll booth landed upside down about 20 yards from where it should be. the crash caused a traffic nightmare for people trying to get to the city. the which closed six cash and fast-track lanes, two hov lanes, and two bus lanes. sky 7 shows traffic backed up all the way to albany. >> if you're willing to sit in traffic and brave it, the lanes to the left are open. i would recommend if you can to use either bart or possibly another bridge to get into the city, maybe the golden gate bridge. >> reporter: a lot of people probably want to know when lanes will be back open. the latest update i have is that they hope to have some lanes

back open by 6:00. but that might be -- seem ambitious at this point because they have a lot to clean up. they need to make sure that the toll booth is structurally sound. they can't reopen all of the lanes. that is because this crash completely took out toll booth number 14. they need to completely replace that. and they need to fix each booth on either side, booth 13 and 15. they say even by monday morning's commute, that might not be finished. traffic still expected to be bad for quite a while. hoping to have some lanes open in a few hours. reporting live, elissa harrington, abc7 news. >> nice job out there. what a mess on the roads. up to the sky, taking a live look at skyview 7 where you can see there on the ground still crews very active in cleaning up the debris that is still behind. as we zoom out, you see all of the cars really creeping through the remaining lanes that are open. you heard elissa harrington say

at one point this morning ten lanes being closed. it does appear that we have at least three to four lanes open and more being diverted to the right-hand side of the screen. >> you see people trying to get over into the fast-track lanes and to the cash lanes. we want to get a live check now at traffic toll plaza from our map here. you see how things are backed up here. look at the red there on 580. that's traffic backed up all the way to albany trying to get in. not so bad on 24. took about 20 minutes. there are spotting areas of traffic trying to get from place to place. folks, you have to allow extra time if you're trying to get westbound on 80 through the toll plaza. >> yeah. taking a live look on the ground, you see there a virtual parking lot. taking a look at one of the live maps right now on my computer.

from the bay bridge to albany, it's an hour and seven minutes. that gives you an idea of how slow the backup is here. >> about six lanes on the left side of the screen facilistill down. the remains of the box truck fastened on to a tow truck and moving away. that doesn't mean they'll open the lanes any time soon, but that's the latest information. >> certainly a story we'll keep following all evening long. in the meantime, look at this -- the crash also affected bus service for several hours today. this morning, the tweet, "due to the bay bridge closure, bus service between san francisco and emeryville is on hold. please transfer to bart at richmond to travel to and from san francisco." the train service also runs a number of connecting bows routes. cap -- bus routes. capital corridor said service resumed just before 1:00 this afternoon. earlier, the abc7 news app

let people know the fatal crash shut down multiple lanes. you can get traffic and cleanup udates as they become available. all you need to do is enable push alerts from the abc7 news app for the instant notifications. switching gears. today marks one year since 36 people were killed in the ghost ship fire in oakland. abc7 news was at the ghost ship warehouse for a prayer vigil. it featured poet tree readings, a -- poetry readreadings, a children's chorus and more to honor those who died. council members said the city continues to improve. >> sadly enough in our streets, it takes somebody losing their lives for all of us to get involved now there's a movement in oakland that we recognize that the inspectors will come to my house because tenants are calling, and we're trying to make changes to public safety. >> sky 7 was above the warehouse

a short time ago. right now there's an art installation honoring those who died. there will also be an objeservae at sundown and vigil lasting until 9:00 this evening. nearly 40 lawsuits have been filed against pg&e in connection to the north bay wildfires. the "press democrat" reports lawyers in santa rosa want all cases dealt with in ♪a county superior court. a formal request was made to the judicial council. a hearing date is expected early next year. the sonoma county wildfires in october killed 24 and destroyed more than 5,000 homes. after hours of debate, last-minute changes, and one republican holdout, the senate has passed its version of major tax reform. democrats are not happy. reporter kim hutcherson has more. the tax cuts and jobs act as amend sudded is passed. >> reporter: a vooictory for th

white house and gop as they inch closer to a major legislative win for the first time in trump's presidency. the senate passed its version of tax reform 51-49 early saturday morning. republican majority leader senator mitch mcconnell is hoping to use this win as momentum for the 2018 elections. senator chuck schumer, the democratic senate minority leader, says it's a bill no one can be proud of. >> as you noticed, at the end, there was not a single democrat who thought this was a good idea. so we're going to take this message to the american people also a year from now. >> we understand they have the votes to pass their bill, despite a process and a product that no one can be proud of, and everyone should be ashamed of. >> reporter: president trump making a statement hours later, praising the bill's passage as "tremendous tax reform," and promising "tremendous cuts." >> we passed the largest tax cuts in the history of our

accident early this morning. a toll taker was killed when a box truck slammed into one of the toll booths. this is traffic heading toward the bay bridge toll plaza on the left side of the screen. on interstate 80 westbound, the backup now exceeds seven miles, all the way back to albany. it will take you an hour to get through there. think of alternate transportation. new developments over a san jose state professor accused of sexually harassing students. he's resigned. a school investigation found he harassed students in 2015 and is accuseded of making sexual comments to other students. the professor was set to teach again this semester after his suspension ended. "the mercury news" reports that aptekar will retain his faculty access to the library system. protesters are demanding the release of undocumented immigrants at a detention facility in the east bay.

abc7 was at the west county jail, the west county jail. 20 people marched in protest today. inside the facility, dozens of immigrants are being held. in september, 27 female inmates signed a letter complaining about conditions including being forced to use bags instead of toilets for most of the day. the "chronicle" reports one woman chose to be deported instead of being forced to stay. protesters said it's necessary to call attention to the detention and the conditions inside. >> we can liberate documented people, because it takes a mass movement to make this sanctuary state a reality. that's why we're here. >> demonstrators called for a stop to the mexican wall and to block any muslim ban. a scary moment for a man using an iphone 6. a camera captured the phone exploding in his hand. we have the story now from brooklyn. >> reporter: the iphone 10 might be the hottest phone out there, but it's got nothing on this iphone 6. watch this surveillance video.

speaking exclusively to eyewitness news, abbott gates says he was texting a friend when it suddenly blew up in his hands. >> i received a message, i answered the message, i put the phone in the charge. as i'm holding the phone, it started -- smoke coming out of the left side of the phone. when i pulled the case back to see what it was, it literally exploded. >> reporter: he says all of a sudden the screen went black and then got so hot, he says it did this to his thumb. the phone was so hot it burned this mark into the floor. he had to pick it up using this. he said the phone was smoking for 20 more minutes. the phone's open now. did you open it -- >> no, that's all from itself. >> reporter: itself? >> the cracked screen, the phone, that's the battery. >> reporter: gates says all he's looking for is a replacement phone at no cost. he's thankful it wasn't worse. >> my biggest concern was i'm happy it was a text message and not a call. if i had to my ear and that would have happened, it probably would have burned off my face. >> unreal. apple released this statement

a toll booth worker is dead after a truck crashes into the bay bridge toll plaza. >> the chp identifies the driver of the truck as daniel burke from foster city. he's under arrest and faces charges of driving under the influence and manslaughter. >> sky 7 is over the tauoll pla as we speak. traffic has been a nightmare all day, backed up for miles. the california highway patrol has closed multiple lanes for the investigation. >> this is video from earlier in the day. you see the extensive damage from the collision. part of the toll booth ended up well past the plaza, and the truck just obliterated. the chp has this advice for drivers trying to get into san francisco -- >> if you're willing to sit in traffic and brave it, the lanes to the left of us are still open. however, i would highly recommend if you can to use either b.a.r.t. or another bridge, maybe the golden gate bridge. >> the truck hit at least five

other cars before slamming into the toll booth. the toll taker that has been killed is identify as 46-year-o 46-year-old cici haan. she's leaves behind a husband and 10-year-old daughter. on the ground, elissa harrington has been at the scene all day. can you tell us now where the truck was going? we know that we saw audio equipment packed inside. >> reporter: we don't know exactly where the truck was going. it was filled with all sorts of audio/video, visual equipment. things like large speakers. we saw different cords, microphones, things like that. it looked like perhaps it was on its way to set up for a show or some sort of event. i did see on the suspect's social media account that he was looking for somebody to meet him in south san francisco today. perhaps that's where this truck was headed. that is one thing that chp officers say they are looking into, as well. where it was coming from and where it was going.

>> something that we need to address now that it's been a while since we saw you at the top of the newscast. you mentioned that perhaps some of the toll plaza lanes would be open by 6:00. how realistic is that? >> reporter: well, the lanes that were closed earlier are still closed. i can tell you ten lanes at the bay bridge toll plaza are open that's ten lanes. if you're driving into the city, you'll want to stay to your left. but six of the main lanes are closed. four off to the side. that's two fast track-only lanes and two bus loans closed. -- lanes closed. ten lanes open, ten lanes closed. a lot of traffic headed into the city. smooth past this point. chp was hoping to open some lanes by 6:00. i can tell you there's a lot happening out here. we're seeing people abowith bro, mops, chains, tow trucks. they're trying to clear the scene but make sure the bay bridge toll plaza is structurally sound. this was a high-speed crash.

it took out one of the toll booths completely. sent it flying. we saw a toll booth 14 upside down about 20 yards from where it should be. the woman who was working inside, sadly, was killed. and what they are working on is the toll booths on either side, number 13 and number 15. those are damaged, as well. and we're told that those repairs might not be made until monday. monday morning commute. could be a bad one. reporting live, elissa harrington, abc7 news. >> we appreciate the update. thank you. here is what we know about this moment -- about the truck that plowed into the toll plaza. the truck is a rental through a company called monarch truck rentals. from sky 7, this vantage point, we spotted numerous musical instruments scattered on the roadway. audio/visual equipment. no word on where the truck might have been going. one of our crew members noted a label on a suitcase that read

"lucas holiday party." we did reach out to lucasfilms were and told the truck was not heading to or from their holiday party. you can get all the new developments on the abc7 news app. we will send you push alerts about traffic updates and the investigation, and we'll have the latest on abc7 news at 11:00 tonight. a former stanford swimmer convicted of sexually assaulting a woman outside a campus fraternity is appealing his conviction. a brief filed yesterday claims misconduct by prosecutors. brock turner's attorneys say the judge did not instruct jurors to consider lesser criminal charges and excluded witness testimonies that may have proved his innocence. turner claims the sexual contact was consensual. he served three months of a six-month sentence. president trump claims he has nothing to hide in the russia investigation. but a tweet he sent today raised questions about exactly what he knew. the president tweeted, "i had to fire general flynn because he lied to the vice president and fbi." mr. trump is referring to michael flynn, his former

national security adviser, who pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi yesterday and promised to cooperate with the special counsel investigation. the words the president used in the tweet raised concerns on social media. hawaii congressman tweeted, "this is obstruction of justice. possus admits flynn lied to the fbi. he tried to influence or stop the fbi investigation on flynn." the president has not commented about the tweet. it's common to hear about package thefts, especially this time of year. there's a twist to one case. a nanny would not let the thief get away. we have this report from olympia, washington. >> reporter: watch home surveillance catches this woman as she walks up to the door, grabs a package, and runs to the getaway car that's slowly driving with the door open. >> hey, what are you doing? >> reporter: this isn't your ordinarily package theft story. as the woman tries to get in, the driver bolts, causing her to

fall. possibly because who've was running after her. >> it was very intense. >> reporter: that's kate anderson, the nanny who was home at the time watching over a 1-year-old baby. she says a package arrived, and ten minutes later, so did the thief. >> she was dressed nice. she had a dog in her jacket. this is all just crazy. >> reporter: crazy didn't stop kate. she says she saw the woman pick up the package from the front door and decided to run after her. >> i continued to run like, hey -- you not nice person, like i see you. you're stealing from me. when she was on the ground, i kind of kept her there. >> reporter: kate said the woman tried to tell her she wasn't stealing. >> shy literally was like -- she literally was like, i was just checking your address. i'm like, no, girl, i have cameras. >> reporter: kate marched the woman back to the home and held her there for eight minutes unil police showed up and arrested her. >> if somebody's doing something wrong, i'm not afraid to put them in check. >> reporter: the homeowner, tanya smith, says she can see why thieves went after her package. >> we're a house on the corner.

let's tee it up. the third round of the hero challenge in the bahamas with an old-school name, tiger woods. he started in fifth place at seven under. he quickly dropped out with four bogeys on the front nine including both par 5s. still having trouble chipping here on 3. can't get it on the green. at one point he was five over on the day. hit a 40 on the front, bogied ten to start the back nine. but with birdows 14 and 17, he shoots a 3 over 75. he is four under on the tournament. shot of the day, kevin kisner. who needs a putter? 17th hole, nothing but net. not even a bounce. one over on the tournament with that birdie. look at that. you rarely see that. tiger's ten back of leader charlie hoffman. shot a two under 70. finishing with three birdies in the final five holes including this on 18. 14 under on the tournament. but here's tiger. >> going to keep fighting.
