family deals with the unthinkable after that horrific accident around this time yesterday morning at the bay bridge toll plaza. si si han worked as a toll booth collector for a decade. just minutes after she started her history yesterday morning, a suspected drunk driver crashed into her booth. the state capitol lowered its flag to half-staff in her honor. abc7 husband reporter lisa ga leashian spoke with the victim's family and friends. >> she's a very kind and generous woman. >> reporter: si si han was loved by so many. here she is with her husband and their 10-year-old daughter. i spoke with a close relative. she shared these photos and her fears for the family. >> he's devastated. the daughter, how he's going to have a difficult time. >> reporter: han stepped into booth 14 just ten minutes before

police say daniel burke sped through the toll plaza in a box truck. cars were backed up in the lane waiting to pay. >> hit that very last car in line and caused a 'cane reaction. that's how all five vehicles were damaged and just continued and struck the booth. >> reporter: the booth with han inside was thrown several feet. burke who was ejected from his smashed truck was seriously hurt. he's charged with dui and vehicular manslaughter. flags at the toll plaza are at half-staff and her long time co-workers and friends are in shock. >> we loved her. she always smiled and always asked about the family and asked about our daughter and her husband and her mother. so yeah, it's going to be -- it's hard right now. >> reporter: she moved to the u.s. from burma when she married her husband 15 years ago. she started working for cal trans as a throw worker a decade ago soon after giving birth to

her daughter. >> i've known her forever. so it's hard. great loss. >> reporter: lisa as mean ga leashian, abc7 news. >> we want to take a look now an the toll plaza from our toll plaza camera. you can see traffic running smoothly this morning. yesterday it was heavy all day long, of course, because of the lane closures. sky 7 was up over the toll plaza. you can see the jam that the lane closures created all day yesterday. the sea of cars stretching from the approach all the way through the mccarthur maze continuing on the east shore freeway. caltrans tells abc7 news service a lot of work to do. >> the toll booth itself was completely wiped out. the other toll booths were damaged but we should have the damage fixed by monday morning. >> caltrans does not expect the toll boot that was destroyed to be ready by tomorrow morning's commute.

the abc news 27 and let people know a fatal crash shut down multiple lanes of the toll plaza. you can enable push alerts from the news ap for instant notifications. it's been one year since a fire at an oakland warehouse known as the gostisbehere ship killed 36 people. it's the deadliest fire in that city's history. last night the community came together to honor the victims. abc7 news reporter lonnie rivera has who are more on the emotional remembrance. >> reporter: a year has gone by but the heart ache for so many still feels fresh. community members read the names of the 36 victims who decided in the gostisbehere ship warehouse fire. mary vega wears her son's photo near her heart. he and his girlfriend were among the victims. >> it's very hard. >> reporter: 22-year-old alex vega and his girlfriend 20-year-old michaela gregory were in love and had been dating for five years. they came to the warehouse that

night for a good time at a concert. >> they had new shirts just for this concert. and she started dancing in my hallway. >> reporter: this visit was a big step for vega, her first time at the site. >> it was just so hard just the idea in earlier in the day, others left notes and flowers, some just came to comfort one another. on the night of december 2nd, the fire ig eg knighted in the building used as an artists collective. the warehouse was hosting a concert, but the building did not have a permit for entertainment or residential use. later investigators reported serious electrical problems inside. >> to rise up, do better. we're trying to do that at the investment level with more inspectors. >> reporter: there are ongoing lawsuits filed on behalf of the victims' families against the building's owner, the city of oakland and property manager. >> something has to be changed. the laws have to be changed.

they can't do concerts in a warehouse like that. >> reporter: still one year later, the community used art in many forms to remember the victims and promised to never forget them. in oakland, lonnie rivera, abc7 news. dozens of candles lined the edge of lake merritt in oakland last night honoring the lives lost in the gostisbehere ship fire. 36 names and fires are illuminated in glass jars as part of a memorial to those who died inside the warehouse. the youngest of the gostisbehere ship victims, friends described him as being a talented singer who belonged to a boy's choir. he attended a school of the arts in san francisco. he was in the 11th grade. mcgill lived in dublin. news in oakland, the u.s. postal inspector confirms to us twos blocks were evacuated after a postal worker found a suspicious device in a blue mail

collection box. someone discovered the device just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. it's unclear if the device is real or a hoax. bay area congressman row conquer hosted aid town town hall where he told me they need to direct their energy toward positive activity despite the current political climate. abc7 news was at the public forum at lindberg high school in san jose. conner took questions about net neutrality and other subjects but most questions focused on the tax plan passed in the senate friday night. >> under this plan, you no longer would be able to deduct your state taxes and that's going to really hurt our communities. and they're concerned about the giveaways to investors and corporations at the expense of the middle class. >> well, republicans claim the bill will be beneficial for most americans. the nonpartisan congressional budget office estimates the plan would increase the deficit by

nearly $1.5 trillion over the next decade and take 13 million people off health care. a little bit of relief on the way for those affected by the north bay fires. abc7 news was in san jose as the non-profit group turning weals for kids handed off more than 200 bicycles for victims. firefighters from three departments in marin keep the picked up the bikes and plan to distribute them next weekend with the hopes of lifting spirits during what could be a difficult time. >> fires may have been two months ago, but christmas is here. and a lot these family are still reeling with the aftermath of this fire. we hope this bicycle will not only provide them with a mode of transportation but joy and escape as' enter is the season. >> the goal is to have 1,000 bikes to give out. they still need donations. if you'd like 0 help, drop off a bike at any marin county, mill valley or southern marin fire station. the biggest and brightest

moon of the year will rise over the bay area tonight. reports say the so-called super moon will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than normal. and will be the only one this year. you're looking at video of the last super moon on december 13th of last year. december super moons go by a variety of names from a blue moon to full cold moon and big spirit moon. interestingly, the term super moon is not an astronomical term according to a "new york times" report. it was coined by an astrologer in the 1970s. not by scientists. so what say you, lisa argen, about that? >> we'll have good viewing tonight. we had rainier this morning. cloud cover kept our temperatures up. with a clear sky tonight, not only will we have great viewing but overnight lows in the next several nights are really going to get cool. it is 51 in san francisco.

you're watching video from a strike that happened several years ago. city officials say staff shortages may force some public facilities to close. they'll have more details on which services may be impacted. that will be released tomorrow. president trump claims he has nothing to hide in the russia investigation, but a tweet he sent raises new questions about his involvement. this as the investigation threatens to close in on some of his closest allies. abc news reporter elizabeth herr has more. >> mike. >> president trump insisting he is not worried about michael flynn pleading guilty to lying to the fbi. >> what has been shown is no collusion. no collusion. there's been absolutely -- there's been absolutely no collusion. >> reporter: the president later tweeting i had to fire general flynn because he lied to the vice president and the fbi. he has pled guilty to those lies.

it is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. there was nothing to hide." until now the president has never said he fired flynn for lying to the fbi. last february, he gave another reason. >> no, i fired him because of what he said to mike pence. >> reporter: court documents suggest flynn did not act alone when he reached out to foreign governments. they allege in one case he was directed to do so by a very senior member of the transition team. sources tell abc news that is senior official was the president's son-in-law jared kushner. but in a statement, the white house says nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than mr. flynn. flynn's guilty plea a single county of lying to the fbi, carries a maximum prison term of five years. is he likely to do much less time. elizabeth herr, abc news, new york. the words the president used in the tweet about the fbi race concerns on social media.

hawaii congressman ted lieu emphatically tweeted this is obstruction of justice. potus now admits he knew michael flynn lied to the fbi, yet trump tried to influence or stop the fbi investigation on flynn. this morning, the president was back at it on twitter saying i never asked comey to stop investigating flynn, just more fake news covering another comey lie. "the new york times" obtained e-mails that suggest the trump administration had close contact with the russians during his transition. shortly after president obama issued new sanctions against russia last december, adviser k.t. mcfarland e-mailed a colleague saying if there is a tit-for-tat escalation, trump will have difficulty improving relations with russia which has just thrown usa election to him. it is unclear if mcfarland was being serious about russia helping shape the election's

outcome. the e-mails and interviews do suggest michael flynn was in close contact with white house officials before and after the sanctions were issued, and that will contradict a white house claim he act independently. abc news as suspended brian ross for four weeks without pay for an error during a report friday on the michael flynn story. ross citing a single anonymous source reported flynn was reaped to testify that donald trump when he was a presidential candidate, had told him to contact the russians. abc news put out this statement. "we deeply regret and apologize for the serious error we made. the reporting by brian ross during cat special report had mot been fully vetted through our editorial standards process." the statement goes on to say, "it is vital we get the story right and retain the trust we've built with our audience. these are core principles. we fell far short of that." incredible video shows an

sunday morning, a front has moved through we're looking at some warmer conditions this morning. we got some rain anywhere from a couple hundredths to 7 on top of mt. diablo. it is snowing heightly here atta ho vae airport. we could expect an additional couple of inches here. but we are in the cold sector of the system for the next several days. northwesterly winds behind the system are going to bring some breezy winds in the hills and some very cold nights. so you thought it was cold already. this morning, we're milder. it's 50 in hayward. 4 degrees and normally we see more 30s in the north bay and 40s around the bay. but we are warm. 8 degrees warmer due to cloud cover. some of the wet pavement, two-mile visibility santa rosa. fog. breezy along the coast. winds kicking up in the north and east bay hills tonight through tuesday morning. we're looking at dry and milder

days later this week. it's going to take all week to get there. it the highlighted areas north and east bay hills looking at about 1,000 feet above that. winds will gust to 45 miles an hour. the east bay up to 55 miles an hour. so it is going to get awfully breezy at the coast today and in the hills tonight and tomorrow. be advised of that. when those winds abate in the valley, you're not going to see the hills. because of that, the napa and santa rosa area will see very cold temperatures. average low 38. we'll be 34 tomorrow morning. and we'll see the temperatures fluctuate a bit. it's going to be cold. in fact, we're going to see clear skies and you want to probably have another blanket on the bed. so peninsula today should be a nice afternoon. but it will be on the cool side. 49 by 8:00. mid 50s through the afternoon. upper 50s should do it for the highs. then you know after that, we get the chilly nights. highs around the bay today

due to the leftover cloud cover, we're mild they are morning, 2 to 8 degrees milder, even 10 degrees milder by the delta. overnight lows get very cool in the days ahead. 51 oakland is, san francisco and san jose. 38 in santa rosa. today, lots of sunshine. we'll have a cool afternoon with breezy winds at the coast. highs only in the mid and upper 50s today. overnight tonight and the next several nights, it will be cool in the valleys near some frost possible. but windy in the hills. i'll explain in a couple minutes. >> all right, lisa. after hours of debate last minute changes, one republican holdout, the senate passed its version of major tax reform. the democrats not happy. reporter kim hutchinson has more. >> reporter: the tax cuts and jobs act as amended is passed. >> reporter: a victory for the white house and the gop as they inch one step closer to a major legislative win for the first time in trump's presidency.

the senate passed its version of tax reform by a vote of 51-49 early saturday morning. republican majority leader senator mitch mcconnell is hoping to use this win as momentum for the 2018 elections. while senator chuck schumer, the minority leader says it's a bill no one can be proud of. >> as you noticed, at the end, there was not a single democrat who thought this was a good idea. and so we're going to take this message to the american people also a year from now. >> we understand they have the votes to pass their bill despite a process and a product that no one can be proud of and everyone should beof. >> reporter: president trump making a statement hours later praising the bill's passage as "tremendous tax reform" and promising? tremendous cuts." >> we passed the largest tax cuts in the history of our country and many other things along with it.

the husband's wedding band lost just four years into their marriage. he lost the ring in 1971. last week, someone returned to the couple. a construction crew find it digging up a park sidewalk that was built in 1982. it featured engraved initials and a wedding date. the parks and rec department spread the word on social media. that's how they found the couple. >> we had forgotten all about it. i had asked our children, do you remember dad at thing you he lost the ringing? they didn't remember at all and think it's so exciting. > the couple is not sure how the ring got to the park. they think someone else may have worn it for a while. apple is out with a software update after another glitch popped up on the iphone. users reported a bug that caused phones to keep rebooting. this is the latest in a series of problems with the iphone and the software.

windy in the north and east bay hills tonight through tuesday night. then we'll look for dry and milder days. it's going to take all week long to see the highs come up in the overnight lows kind of mitigate. between now and then, a wind advisory. 10:00 tonight till 10:00 a.m. tuesday morning. it could be dropped earlier in the east bay his. we're looking at wind gusts up to 45 miles an hour. north bay hills could see 55-mile-an-hour gusts mainly above 1,000 feet. it will be breezy and blustery at the coast today. northwesterly winds allowing for cooler afternoon. peninsula temperatures, you'll notice today despite all the sunshine, it's going to take awhile to get into the mid 50s by noontime. afternoon highs from belmont and san carlos upper 50s. san mateo and the numbers drop off quickly tonight. highs in and around the bay today, 61 for fremont. 59 san rafael as well as santa

streets. abc7 news reporter laura anthony has the details. >> they are tough sheds, 20 of them 10x12 feet each meant to put a dent in oakland's exploding homeless problem, one exhibited by sprawling tent cities like this one just a few yards away. >> you live on streets right now, we want to offer you an opportunity to live here. >> reporter: joe is the man in charges of the homeless outreach program. >> we looked at how we could build something that would have an impact to reduce the problems of the garbage, blocked roadways, the rats that come with the garbage that piles up and everything else. >> reporter: the city hopes to have the 20 tough sheds ready for move-in. they would accommodate 40 people, two to a shed. it's being called a low barrier shelter meaning while residents have to abide by certain rules, drug and alcohol use won't necessarily be prohibited.
