one-. this is abc7 mornings. >> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, december 3rd. let's start way quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, everyone. a little rain fell last night. live doppler 7 shows activity moving into the sierra nevada in the form of some snow. there's a few showers up to the north. lake county looking at low snow levels. 32 degrees in south lake. yes, adding to snow there. back home, we're milder with the cloud cover moving out. we have a mild visibility in santa rosa. fox an issue in the north bay. temperatures anywhere from a degree to about 8 degrees warmer than yesterday morning. so 48 degrees in concord is milder. look at oakland at 509 as well as san jose. 51 in the city. temperatures today will struggle to make it to average readings.

mid 50s by noontime. plenty of sunshine. numbers 5 degrees shy of average. with a clear sky, it's going to get chilly at night. winds to talk about in the hills all coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. we have breaking news out of san leandro this morning. at least one person is dead after a crash on interstate 880 chp is investigating what led up to this accident. officials say a white dodge charger struck a pole just before 3:00 this morning. we are working to gather more details. keep watching abc7 news for updates. and another deadly crash, this one in sonoma county. the chp says a vehicle hit a pedestrian on highway 12 near warm springs road. this happened around 11:30 last night. no word if the driver stayed on scene. chp officials closed the highway to traffic for several hours overnight. all lanes reopened around 3:00 this morning.

this morning, an east bay family deals with the unthinkable after that horrific accident around this time yesterday morning, actually about 5:15 yesterday at the bay bridge toll plaza. si si han worked as a toll booth collector for a decade. just minutes after she started her shift yesterday morning, a suspected drunk driver crashed into her booth. the state capitol has lowered its flag to half-staff in her honor. abc7 news reporter lisa emin ga leashian spoke with the victim's family and friends. >> she's very kind and generous woman. >> reporter: si si han was loved by so many. here she is with the two loves of her life, her husband and their 10-year-old daughter. i spoke with a close relative who didn't want to be identified. she shared these photos and her fears for the family. >> he's devastated. depressed. and then the daughter, how it's going to be -- he's going to have a difficult time.

>> reporter: han stepped into booth 14 just ten minutes before police say daniel burke sped through the toll plaza in a box truck. cars were backed up in the lane waiting to pay. >> hit that very last car in line and kind of caused a chain reaction. that's how all five vehicle were were damaged and just continued and struck the booth. >> reporter: the booth with han inside was thrown several feet. burke who was ejected from his smashed truck was seriously phe's charged with dui and vehicular manslaughter. flags at the toll plaza are at half-staff and han's long-time co-workers and friends are in shock. >> we loved her here. she was like one of us. she always smiled and always asked about the family and asked about her daughter and her husband and her mother. so yeah, it's going to be -- it's hard right now. >> reporter: han moved to the u.s. from burma when she married her husband 15 years ago. she started working for cal

trans as a toll worker a decade ago soon after giving birth to her daughter. >> i've known her forever. so it's hard. it's just a great loss. >> reporter: lisa emin ga leashian, abc7 news. >> our hearts go out to that fmily. let's take a live look now an the toll plaza from our bay bridge toll plaza camera. everything rolling right along. today was nothing like this yesterday. the track was heavy all day because of the lane closures. this is the look from sky 7 yesterday over the toll plaza. the jamup of the lane closures created mass confusion all day. the sea of cars stretched all the way from the approach through the macarthur maze, continuing on the east shore freeway. caltrans tells abc7 news that they had a lot of work to do. >> the toll booth itself was completely wiped out. the other toll booths were damaged but we should have the damage fixed by monday morning.

>> caltrans does not expect the booth that was destroyed in this accident to be ready by tomorrow morning's commute. the abc7 news ap let people know about that fatal crash that shut down multiple lanes of the bay bridge toll plaza. you can enable push alerts from the abc7 news ap for instant notification prfz you know, it's been one year since a fire at an oakland warehouse known as the gostisbehere ship killed 36 people. that is the deadliest fire in that city's history. last night, the community came together to honor the victims. abc7 news reporter lonnie rivera has more on the emotional remembrance. >> reporter: a year has gone by but the heart ache for so many still feels fresh. community members read the names of the 36 victims who died in the gostisbeherish ship warehouse fire. mary vega wears her son's photo

near her heart. he and his girlfriend were among the victims. >> it's very hard. >> reporter: 22-year-old alex vega and his girlfriend 20-year-old michaela gregory were in love and had been dating for five years. they came to the warehouse that night for a good time at a concert. >> they had new shirts just for this concert. and she started dancing in my hallway. >> reporter: this visit was a big step for vega. it's her first time at the site. >> it was just so hard just the idea. >> reporter: earlier in the day, others left notes and flowers. some just came to comfort one another. on the night of december 2nd, the fire ignited in the building used as an artists collective. the warehouse was hosting a concert, but the building did not have a permit for entertainment or residential use. later, investigators reported serious electrical problems inside. >> oakland needs to rise up, do better. we're trying to do that at the investment level with more inspectors. >> reporter: there are ongoing lawsuits filed on behalf of the

victims' families against the building's owner, the city of oakland and property manager. >> something has to be changed. the laws have to be changed. they can't do concerts in a warehouse like that. >> reporter: still one year later, the community used art in many forms to remember the victims and promised to never forget them. in oakland, lonnie rivera, abc7 news. >> dozens of candles lined the edge of lake merritt in oakland last night honoring the lives lost in the ghost ship fire. 36 names and fires are illuminated in glass jars as part of a memorial to those who died inside the warehouse. up devin mcgill was the youngest of the victims. friends describe him as being a talented singer who belonged to a boy's choir. he attended a school of the arts in san francisco and was in the

11th grade. mcgill lived in dublin. >> developing news in oakland, the u.s. postal inspect confirms to abc news two blocks where is evacuated after a postal worker found a suspicious device in a blue mail collection box. someone discovered the device just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. it's unclear if the device is real or a hoax. >> bay area congressman ro conquer hosted a town hall where he told people they need to direct their energy toward positive activity despite what he called the current political client. abc7 news was at the public forum at lindberg high school in san jose. conner took questions about net neutrality and other subjects but most questions focused on the tax plan passed in the senate friday night. >> under this plan, you no longer would be able to deduct your state taxes and that's going to really hurt our communities. and they're concerned about the giveaways to investors and corporations at the expense of the middle class.

>> republicans say the bill will be beneficial for most americans. the nonpartisan congressional budget office estimates the plan would increase the deficit by nearly $1.5 trillion over the next decade and take 13 million people off health care. a little bit of relief on the way for those affected by the north bay fires. abc7 news was in san jose as the non-profit turning we wheels fo handed off more than 200 bicycles for victims. firefighters from three departments in marin county picked up the bikes and plan to distribute them next weekend with the hopes of lifting spirits during what could be a difficult time. >> fires may have been two months ago, but christmas is here. and a lot of these families are still reeling with the aftermath of this fire. we hope this bicycle will not only provide them with a mode of transportation but a little bit of joy and escape as they enter

the holiday season. >> the goal is to have 1,000 bikes to give out. they are still in need of donations. if you would like to help, you can drop off a bike at any marin county, mill valley or southern marin fire station. the biggest and brightest moon of the year will rise over the bay area tonight. reports say the so-called super moon will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than normal. and will be the only one this year 2017. you're looking at video of the last super moon on december 13th of last year. december super moons go by a variety of names from a blue moon to full cold moon and big spirit moon. while they say the term super moon isn't an astronomical term or a meteorological term according to "the new york times" report, it was coined by an astrologer. can you believe that? that was back in the 1970s.

oakland is bracing for a strike by city workers this week. the service employees international union and the international federation of professional and technical engineers plan to strike on tuesday. sworn police and fire employees will not participate. this is video from a strike that happened several years ago. city officials say staff shortages may force some public f facilities to close. more details which services will

be impacted will be releasd tomorrow. president trump claims he has nothing to hide in the russia investigation but a tweet he sent raises new questions about his involvement. this as the investigation threatens to close in on some of his closest allies. abc news reporter elizabeth herr has more. >> no, i'm not. >> reporter: president trump insisting he is not worried about michael flynn pleading guilty to lie together fbi. >> what has been shown is no collusion. no collusion. there's been absolutely -- there's been absolutely no collusion. >> reporter: the president later tweeting, i had to fire general flynn because he lied to the vice president and the fbi. he has pled guilty to those lies. it is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. there was nothing to hide." but until now, the president has never said he fired flynn for lying to the fbi. in fact, last february, he gave another reason.

>> no, i fired him because of what he said to mike pence. very simple. >> reporter: court documents filed in connection with a guilty plea suggest flynn did not act alone when he reached out to foreign governments. they allege in one case he was directed to do so by a very senior member of the transition team. surces tell abc news that is senior official was the president's son-in-law jared kushner. but in a statement, the white house says nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than mr. flynn. flynn's guilty plea, a single count of lying to the fbi, carries a maximum prison term of five years. but he is likely to do much less prison time. elizabeth herr, abc news, new york. thewords the president used in the tweet about the fbi raised concerns on social media. hawaii congressman ted lieu emphatically tweeted this is obstruction of justice. potus now admits he knew michael flynn lied to the fbi, yet trump tried to influence or stop the

fbi investigation on flynn. this morning, the president was back on twitter saying i never asked comey to stop investigating flynn. just more fake news covering another comey lie. "the new york times" obtained e-mails that suggest the trump administration had close contact with the russians during his transition. shortly after president obama issued new sanctions against russia last december, adviser k.t. mcfarland e-mailed a colleague saying, "if there is a tit-for-tat escalation, trump will have difficulty improving relations with russia which has just thrown usa election to him." it is unclear if mcfarland was being serious about russia helping shape the election's outcome. those e-mails and "new york times" interviews do suggest michael flynn was in close contact with white house officials before and after the sanctions were issued, and that will contradict a white house

claim that he acted independently. >> abc news has suspended reporter brian ross for four weeks without pay for an error during a report friday on the michael flynn story. ross citing a single anonymous source reported flynn was prepared to testify that donald trump when he was a presidential candidate had told him to contact the rushes. abc news put out this statement. "we deeply regret and apologize for the serious error we made. the reporting by brian ross during the special report had not been fully vetted through our editorial standards process." the statement goes on to say, "it is vital we get the story right and retain the trust we've built with our audience. these are our core principles. we fell far short of that." >> some incredible video shows an iphone exploding. you can see a man suddenly toss his iphone 6 on the ground inside a store in new york city. within seconds you see a cloud

of smoke rising. the owner says the phone kept on smoking for another 20 minutes or so. now all that's left is the shell. inside the phone it's all black. the man says he first realized something was wrong when the screen suddenly went black and the phone got really, really hot. >> i received a message. i answered the message. i put the phone on charge. as i'm holding the phone, i saw smoke started coming out of the side of the phone. the phone just exploded. >> the man says he's thankful he wasn't seriously hurt and wants apple to replace his phone for free. apple says, well, we are going to analyze the device. >> happening today, the san jose earthquakes will host the second annual winterfest at avaya stadium. the holiday themed festival runs from 10:00 this morning until 3:00 this afternoon, featuring 20 tons of snow, a giant inflatable snowglobe, and arts and crafts stations.

50 in oakland. lots of 50s this morning. 54 in half moon bay. with the clouds overnight it, kept us somewhat insulated. 36 santa rosa. 43 in livermore. behind the front, we have a cool air mass that settles in. that will allow its to stay below average today. mid 50s by noon. plenty of sunshine with mid and perhaps a few upper 50s getting windy at the coast. those winds already up in the upper elevations. we'll talk about a wind advisory for the week ahead in a few minutes. >> thank you, lisa. after hours of debate last minute changes and one republican holdout, the senate passed its version of major tax reform. the democrats are not happy. reporter kim hutcherson has more. >> reporter: the tax cuts and jobs act as amended is passed. >> reporter: a victory for the white house and the gop as they inch one step closer to a major legislative win for the first time in trump's presidency. the senate passed its version of

tax reform by a vote of 51-49 early saturday morning. republican majority leader senator mitch mcconnell is hoping to use this win as momentum for the 2018 elections. while senator chuck schumer, the democratic senate minority leader, says it's a bill no one can be proud of. >> as you noticed, at the end, there was not a single democrat who thought this was a good idea. and so we're going to take this message to the american people also a year from now. >> we understand they have the votes to pass their bill despite a process and a product that no one can be proud of and everyone should be ashamed of. >> reporter: president trump making a statement hours later praising the bill's passage as "tremendous tax reform" and propsing, "tremendous cuts." >> we passed the largest tax cuts in the history of our country and many other things along with it.

tremendous tax reform. people are going to be very, very happy. they're going to get tremendous, tremendous tax cuts. >> reporter: but a nonpartisan congressional analysis suggests if the bill becomes law, more than $1 trillion would be added to the deficit over ten years. the bill will now head to the house which passed its own tax reform bill last month. republicans hope to reconcile the two so a final version could be sent to president trump for his signature before christmas. i'm kim hutcherson, abc7 news. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell will talk more about the gop tax plan on "this week" with george stephanopoulos. plus congressman adam schiff and former attorney general michael mukasey also discuss what michael flynn's guilty plea means for the mueller investigation. "this week" starts at 8:00 right after "good morning america" followed by "abc7 news at 9." a couple married for half a

century received a special gift, the husband's wedding band lost just four years into their marriage. he lost the ring in 1971. last week, someone returned to the couple. a construction crew found it digging up a park sidewalk that was built in 1982. it featured engraved initials and a wedding date. the parks and rec department spread the word on social media. and found the couple. >> we had just forgotten all about it. i had asked our children, do you remember us telling you that dad had lost his ring and no, you know, they didn't remember the story at all. so they think it's so exciting. >> the couple is still not sure how the ring got to the park. they think someone else may have worn it for a while. apple is out with a software update after yet another glitch popped up on the iphone. users reported a bug that caused phones to keep rebooting. this is the latest in a series of problems with the iphone and the software. last month, the problem caused

text messages to auto correct the letter "i" into a capital a" with a box and a question mark. i got some of those. there was also an issue with the iphone x that causes it to freeze in cold weather. vinyl is making a comeback. now there's a way to listen to records on the go. a bay area entrepreneur is showing off his invention in tonight's episode of "shark tank." logan rielly spoke with abc7 news anchor. >> dean: lim. >> this is rock block. it is a portable wireless record player and it really works by placing it-record like so. >> it's like a little car. >> instead of the record spinning the rock bok spins around the record. you pull this little guy up. >> and there it goes. >> well, the rock block can also connect to wireless speakers via bluetooth. rielly says it took him about a
