more. one more look, this is from our live crew there this morning. they'll be there all morning long. drivers are sharing their memories of the toll booth operator who died, si si han. >> one woman always passed through lane number 14. she says han's warm smile made a usually hectic commute much brighter. >> a pleasant smile and real grounded. you're stressed. you don't know if you're going to make it to work on time some days. she was very calm in that brief moment. >> the woman you heard from is a schoolteacher and she says she feels for han's family particularly her 10-year-old daughter. >> i feel very sorry, you know,

for her daughter. and for her husband, but her little girl needs her mother. she's 10 years old. >> han is originally from burma. she was a caltrans toll worker since 2007. >> both of the men charged in connection with the 36 deaths in the ghost ship warehouse fire are expected in court. tiffany wilson is live with what we can expect in today's hearing. tiffany? >> reporter: good morning, reggie. today's preliminary hearing is expected to last five days this will be the first time that a judge hears evidence against both men. ghost ship founder derick almena and tenant max harris charged with 36 counts of manslaughter. they both pleaded not guilty. prosecutors say they created a fire hazard that led to the deadliest fire in oakland's history on december 2nd, 2016. 36 people died when flames trapped everyone who was attending a dance party on the second floor of the fruitvale

warehouse. 36 people did not make it out. over the weekend a vigil marking the one-year anniversary was held at the warehouse. people brought notes and flowers. one mother who lost her son visited the site for the first time. >> it was just so hard, just the idea. i've been coming and thinking where was the warehouse? >> reporter: investigators found serious electrical problems inside the warehouse but were unable to determine an official cause of the fire. today's hearing is set to begin at 8:45 this morning. live in observing, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. a second round of relief funding is set to be released to victims of the wildfires. the north bay fire relief fund is sending out another round of checks to people who have lost their homes. the fundraised $24 million so far. napa residents have until friday to apply to the center for

volunteer and nonprofit leadership. sonoma valley can apply and their deadline is friday, december 15th. the developments in san francisco's 911 call center has reached a milestone this past month. dispatchers now answer 90% of calls it receives within ten seconds and that is a significant improvement since april. that was the lowest point. the center only answered 66% of calls. the center still trying to hire more dispatchers. there are 123 and they want that number up to 165. convicted rapist and former stanford swimmer brock turner is looking for a new trial. >> reporter: brock turner, the former stanford swimmer convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious young woman is now asking for a trial. misstatements, misrepresentations, and misunderstandings tainted the case and the actual evidence does not support any of the three convictions.

at trial the district attorney's office argued then 22-year-old victim referred to as emily doe was too intoxicated to consent when then 29-year-old tu yea19- assaulted her. the case sparked nationwide outrage when turner was sentenced. the prosecution asked for six years behind bars but the judge gave him just six months. turner wound up serving only three. the latest on turner's appeal at the latest on turner's appeal at 7:00 a.m. suspending the relationship with longtime conductor james levine pending an investigation into sexual abuse allegations. according to "the new york times" three men came forward yesterday accusing him of sexually abusing them decades ago when they were teenagers. they offered a statement saying he would not be involved in any met activities and has hired an outside law firm to investigate his behavior.

federal inspectors responded. the bomb squad deployed a robot. >> the item left in the box was rendered safe. atf agents collected all the evidence. working on the crime scene almost until midnight last night. >> reporter: a woman, a witness i spoke to off camera, told me the device looked like a bottle with wires coming out of it. that device will now be sent to the u.s. postal service crime lab near washington, d.c., for analysis. two other recent incidents are being investigated. an explosive device in a package delivered to the home of an alameda police officer on november 24th. and on october 19th an explosive package arrived at a home in east palo alto. in both cases people were injured. >> we're not making any types of connections. all three are ongoing

>> you're never prepared for it. this is awful. everyone is really hurting this week. >> reporter: authorities identified the driver as 28-year-old daniel berk. he's expected to be in the hospital for a while recovering from his injuries and then he is facing dui and vehicular manslaughter charges. caltrans officials say they don't know how long this lane will be closed. they have to rebuild the toll booth from the ground up so they do think this will be closed for a while and will impact the commute. they are recommending that you give yourself more time or take public transportation. live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. we'll keep you updated on that traffic situation. you'll get real time updates on major bay area roads and freeways. we'll send you breaking news as it happens. san francisco police are investigating a domestic violence incident that led to two arrests on the bay bridge. police responded to treasure island just after 9:00 last

night and say an armed man ran onto the bridge as he was chasing a woman. both were detained on the bridge. the man tossed his gun on the ramp before officers were able to arrest him. it's not clear if he was arrested on the upper or lower deck. president trump facing new questions this morning in the russia investigation. after a series of weekend tweets and attacks on former fbi director james comey. abc's kenneth moton joins us live. geor good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: it appears that he offered all of them and that is getting attention. president trump in another fight with james comey. the president attacking the bureau tweeting after years of comey the fbi's reputation is in tatters, worst in history. comey fired back saying the fbi is honest, the fbi is strong, the fbi will be independent. the back and forth ignited as

emergency management will look at how residents were notified of the approaching fires. sonoma and napa counties did not send out alerts through the wireless alert system. they say it would have pinninged every cell phone connected to a cell phone tire but that could have caused traffic gridlock as people tried to flee. the flyers were blamed for 44 deaths and the destruction of nearly 9,000 homes and buildings. victims have another reminder they're not forgotten. abc 7 news was at valley of the moon winery as a free holiday dinner was served for about 100 people who lost their homes and just about everything donated. aside from the feast, the dinner had another purpose. >> one was to bring people back together during this holiday time to gather with their friends and talk about their experiences. some people haven't seen each other since the fire happened. >> nearly one out of four homes was destroyed in the fire. the barbecues used to cook the

a strike may be affecting you. a walkout planned for tomorrow will include two unions that represent nearly the entire workforce. this is video of a walkout several years ago. the unions and the city are locked in a contract dispute over wage increase. they plan to meet in a last-ditch effort. officials will give more details on which city services will be impacted if the strike happens. the world's top scientists were the stars at the breakthrough prize in mountain view. celebrities including morgan freeman and kerry washington were there to hand out awards founded by a handful of silicon valley big shots. the breakthrough prize honors those in make contributions in physics, life sciences and math. >> the previous award winners decide the next winners and so it's a peer review effort. >> i think it's important to

san francisco 47. there will be some frost in the north bay tomorrow morning. a better chance in the north bay and east bay valleys. wednesday a slight chance and then we'll just have mainly 40s for lows friday, saturday and sunday. here is sue. >> the metering lights were turned on. fatal accident took out the toll booth. looking at about 20-minute delays just to get there and then it is sluggish to the tunnel and things do pick up towards the san francisco side. just under an hour -- that just flipped over to 1:02. westbound 4, just over 30 minutes. now there's a nice drive, less than 20 minutes. we'll come back and take a look at your mass transit options.

things did not go exactly as planned during this implosion of the pontiac silverdome, former home of the detroit lions. many explosive devices did not detonate. the upper section of the stadium did not collapse. unless gravity brings the stadium down by itself they'll have to move in with excavators to try to take down the structure. a homeless man being called a hero after saving two children from a fire in las vegas. 36-year-old angelo was near the home when it caught fire. a 3-year-old girl and a 10-month-old boy inside. their grandfather couldn't get to them because of flames and a locked security door. angelo pulled both kids to
