morning. we've been watching our camera on top of mt. tam. shaking throughout the evening and now throughout the morning. good morning on this tuesday, december 5th. jessica is on vacation this week, sue hall in for alexis. mike, i want to ask you p those winds in southern california because it's reaching almost hurricane gust strength. >> 70 miles per hour up in the mountains, about 35 through the valleys at least, so that's almost exactly what we dealt with during the fires in the north bay. so, yeah, it is definitely something that's out of control right now because those winds just keep pushing in farther and farther away from the firefighters that are trying to contain it. we still have some issues in two spots, look at fairfield, 26 and look at half-moon bay, 44 mile per hour offshore breeze right now. during an overnight hours the wind advisory did expire and we are slower in most neighborhoods. north 22 on top of mt. tappel pie. a little cooler in some areas 36 to 49. at noon we will be around 58 to

61, at 4:00, 61 to 62, back at 7:00 we will cool a little quicker, 49 to 54. the breezes will taper even more today. we are going to walnut creek where we have an accident this is southbound 680 near north main, a solo car vehicle partially blocking the left lane. chp and walnut creek police are on scene there, but you can see for yourself they are slow and go from the 242 slit in pleasant hill. vacaville eastbound 80 before leisure town road, a car flipped over, landed back on its wheels but is off on the right-hand side in the ditch. chp has to get on scene so we will get an update when they get there. i'm not seeing any slow traffic in the eastbound direction as of yet. we will follow that and check back with your bay bridge toll plaza where we are still down a tollbooth this morning. we are still monitoring that breaking news out of southern california where a massive wildfire is burning out of control. >> this is the thomas fire, it's now scorched more than 31,000 acres in ventura county. one person died while trying to

evacuate. this is new video into our newsroom, the fire has destroyed more than 1,500 structures and forced thousands of people to evacuate. we are talking about widespread power outages, several districts are closed and many roads are now shut down. >> i was in disbelief and shock. that's all. that's all. you never expected someone to come over the hills as it did. >> 500 firefighters are on scene, this he hope to start attacking the fire from the air at day break, the fire is now heading west. our los angeles sister station kabc has reporters on the front lines of this fire. >> this is from just about one hour ago. >> i just got here on foothill near day and we are surrounded by homes burning as i speak. look over my shoulder you can see fire crews these are the first to arrive on scene here and we can't even count the number of homes that they are now trying to put out, engulfed right now.

we see fire crew from compton, santa fe springs, and this fire is burning on both sides of foothill right now which is dangerous, even my photographer and i had had to figure out where we could pull over and park safely because we were seeing flames all around us. these fire crews are trying not just to put out these fires over here, if brine can switch here across the street you have a home burning right in front of us and countless since we have gone up foothill from day, maybe about a mile west of us where we are now is where they set up breaks for people to stop coming through. >> the story is changing by the minute. we are updating our abc 7 news app with breaking alerts so make sure to download it and enable those push alerts. emeryville police are investigating a shooting during a night of holiday shopping. happened around 6:00 in the parking lot of the target on 40th street. the number of bullet holes found on two cars show that several shots were fired there. police say two people were shot in all, both are in critical

condition this morning. one managed so walk to the home depot nearby where an ambulance picked him up. one suspect has been detained. officers recovered three guns. it is not clear what led up to the shooting but police say it appears none of the people involved were shogt. daly city police need your help identifying this man, they say he was involved in a road rage incident last month. police say he or one of his passengers through a glass bottle at another car. it is unclear where it happened. if you have any information you are asked to contact daly city police. one lane of the bay bridge toll plaza will remain closed for weeks as caltrans makes repairs after a truck driver plowed into the tollbooth killing the toll collector. >> si si han was killed minutes after starting her shift. her husband and several coworkers witnessed the horrific crash. one coworker says he was hired around the same time as he was.

>> it's really sad what happened, especially she has one daughter. >> the chp is still investigating how this happened. theyaniel berk on suspicion of dui and vehicular manslaughter. han's name will be added to a plaque with other caltrans employees who have been killed on the job. oakland police are searching for two possible street racers involved in this deadly hit and run crash. the scene was international boulevard and 82nd avenue yesterday morning. you can see the destruction there. the bmw just crushed. police say the car collided with a dodge charger, when the cars crashed they hit and kid an innocent pedestrian. the driver and passenger in the bmw ran away. there is another delay in legal proceedings one year after the ghostship fire in oakland. the fire killed 36 people. derek almena and max harris with facing 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. their preliminary hearing was scheduled for yesterday but has been put off until tomorrow.

outside of the courtroom the mother of victim alex veg someone needs to be held responsible. >> it feels like it happened yesterday and at the same time it's been an eternity. i haven't seen my son in a year. but it feels like it just happened yesterday. >> attorneys for the two defendants say the fire was a tragedy but their client should not be facing criminal charges. the two men, the building's owner and the city of oakland are also facing a civil law knute case. in the aftermath of the north bay fires for sale fires are going up on burned out lots. according to the san francisco chronicle at least a half dozen charred lots from the most destructive firestorm in california history have hit the market in recent days. the burned properties are priced at about a third of the value they would have fetched if the home still stood. listing prices range from $160,000 to $300,000 and each will be cleared of fire debris before they're sold. local college students are rushing to the alter, the extreme measure in an effort to

we are tracking this breaking news out of ventura county right nouchlt take a look as the walls continue to cave in. you are looking at the ventura county hospital vista delmar hospital in that area and it is burning. this is a live picture right now. all patients and staff were evacuated last night but this fire certainly out of control. 31,000 acres burned so far in the thomas fire. 150 structures destroyed. just devastating for that community. and they are facing near hurricane force winds right now. firefighters certainly have a huge job ahead of them. we will continue monitoring the latest throughout the show. also download the news app. a 69-year-old man in jacksonville is being accused of planning a mass shooting at an islamic center. a source tipped off police. then an undercover detective met with the suspect and confirmed the information investigators

had received including a plan to shoot up a specific islamic center. he told the detective he illegally got a silencer. police then arrested him. a week after res deents had who live on a private street in san francisco got their street back they get to keep their pre sale property sale levels. the chronicle reports that the tax for residents who live at presidio terrace is $4.20 a year. this comes after the board of supervisor voted last week to overturn the street sale. a san jose couple bought it in a 2015 auction after homeowners failed to pay their taxes. happening today some kids in silicon valley are going to get a special shopping spree courtesy of the 49ers. this is the 9ers 11th annual shop with the player event to help kids from the boys and girls club silicon valley. they will also shop with families affected by the north bay wildfires. they will buy $6,000 worth of sports equipment, supplies for after school programs.

a 22 minute ride. westbound 92 up towards the high-rise over towards san matteo and foster city. traffic is we light past the north san pea droe exit. no delays towards southern marin and the golden gate bridge. a couple problem spots, we had the earlier solo vehicle accident just being cleared out of lanes southbound 680 near north main, traffic is stacking up towards pacheko on southbound 680. over towards hercules past highway 4, westbound 80 stall blocking the slow lane. we are seeing slow traffic there. towards the bay bridge we will check back on that in just a few. >> do you know what we should have done, invested in bitcoin. these guys did. so the twins who tried and failed to take control facebook used the pay i can't you have from that legal battle to become bitcoin well neris.

to that. an out of control fire now about 30,000 acres burned and this started as a small fire just last night. thousands of people out of their homes, we have seen multiple buildings burned down including a hospital that has started to collapse as a result. we will continue to watch this throughout the morning. happening today congressman john conyers is expected to announce that he will not seek reelection in the wake of sexual harassment claims. this according to a family member who now plans to run for his seat. multiple women who have worked with conyers during his 53 year career in the house have come forward accusing him of unwanted sexual advances and inappropriate comments. he continues to deny the claims. instagram taking steps to make its users more aware of the sinister aspects of animal photos. when a person searches for a hashtag a warning will pop up. here it is. when someone takes a photo with a wild animal at a tourist attraction and uses any of

live where you live. this is abc 7 news. now at 6:30, breaking news. this is a live picture from southern california, a huge fire forcing thousands of people to evacuate ventura county and this morning bay area tier are headed to help. >> that's the vista delmar hospital. everyone evacuated there but this fire already deadly, one personon a we continue to track that news. first want to start with weather and traffic conditions here at home. >> we are starting to calm down a little bit. we do still have breezes up in the hills running around 15 to 25 miles per hour so be careful at least through lunch and then they will start to taper. down at the lower elevations 26 at fairfield and still

ridiculously fast at half-moon bay about 45 miles per hour and blowing offshore. that's why it will be warm everywhere today. 37 to 47 and then by noon the breezes start to taper as we reach the upper 50s to near 60, low 60s at 4:00 and 46 to 50 as we head towards 7:00. so temperatures will cool just a little bit faster this evening without those breezes. sue. let's take a look at our traffic maps just to give you an overall feeling for your commute this morning. we do have red obviously coming out of the central valley for about an hour drive now up and over the altamonte pass. your nimitz busy, east shore freeway is busy, all not a surprise. let's zero in on a couple specific incidences. westbound 80 near hercules, slow lane blocked with a stall, traffic starting to back up cords crockett. southbound 101 under highway 87 that accident just cleared off to the right hand shoulder, you will see some residual slow traffic on northbound 101 but nothing major at this point. we will be back and take a look at the bay bridge backup in just

a few. back to the breaking news in ventura county where a massive fast moving wildfire continues to burn out of control. >> taking you pack live at the conditions from the air. this is called the thomas fire. at day break fixed wing aircraft and helicopters are expected to join the attack. strong winds are hampering efforts this morning and so far the fire has killed one person. it has burned more than 31,000 acres, destroyed 150 structures, including a mobile home park, an apartment complex and behavioral hospital. right now 27,000 people and about 8,000 homes are under mandatory evacuation right now. there is widespread power outages, several districts school districts closed an many of the roads shut down. all morning long we have been bringing you coverage with help from our los angeles sister station kabc. their reporters are on the front line of this fire. >> the reporter says the number of destroyed homes is quickly growing, here is what he showed us in a live report 30 minutes ago. >> reporter: i gave you a figure earlier of eight homes in in area it has to be upwards of ten

now, this is off of high point drive. this has been developing over the past 30 to 45 minutes. into he is two homes that are now still standing but fully engulfed they were not on fire when we first arrived, especially that home, and in the garage you might be able to make out as my photographer pointed out one of the gas lines with that blue flame in the middle of the garage, we've been heard a lot of explosions from various houses this morning over the past two hours or so. this is a higher point on the the eastern side of ventura off of highway 126, it's quite a distance from where the fire started over closer to highway 150 in santa paula. that's how quickly and how far this fire has traveled. >> wow, they are so close to what is happening there. take a look at these before and after photos of one neighborhood leveled by the thomas fire. obviously this is the before, a mobile home park in wheeler canyon and using sky map technology this is what it looks like this morning. if you download the abc 7 news

app and enable push alerts we will send you the latest breaking news on the fire. on to developing news in the east bay, 3,000 workers are striking today and oakland is bracing for a shut down. >> amy hollyfield live in oakland with the impact you can expect. amy. >> reporter: they are off to an early start, look behind me, employees already on the pickett line in front of oakland city hall. you are going to see liberians, parking meter attendants, after school program employees, all city employees, nonemergency employees, are planning to strike today, 3,000 of them. emergency service workers will be on duty today. the seiu union says it hopes the strike will help the city realize how important these employees are to oakland's daily life. the mayor says she wants to avoid the strike, she says the city has agreed to enter into mediation, she says the city has negotiated in good faith for more than seven months but that

they need more time. union leaders say they are listening, but they are planning to go on strike today. >> i'm available and can convene the team within an hour so they have my phone number, them give me a call whenever they want. >> we are continuing to ask city workers to at least allow us to have the opportunity to put their offer in front of the city council but we cannot do that until wednesday afternoon. we are amenable to mediation with a party of our mutual choosing. most city facilities will be closed today, head start will be closed, after school programs, rec centers, 3,000 employees are set to strike here in oakland. police and fire 911 dispatchers will be at work. this dispute over wage increases and staffing. no negotiations are planned for today. reporting live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> you will find the entire list of services affected by the strike on our website abc7news.com.

make sure to enable push alerts on the abc 7 news app to get major developments in the strike as well as breaking news as it happens. 6:35 now. defense lawyers plan to appeal a gun possession conviction against the man acquitted on murder charges in the death of kate steinle. josé ines garcia zarate's lead attorney believes that the gun charge is inconsistent with the jury's decision. prosecutors accuse him of intentionally firing at steinle at san francisco's pier 14 in 2015. he remains in jail this morning. he faces federal immigration charges. families in san jose are fighting to keep their schools from shutting down. the oak grove school district claims there aren't enough students to keep all eight schools in operation. the map you see shows the five schools they discussed at a meeting last night. students, parents and teachers making their case. >> at st. teresa the teachers are caring and helped my struggle and gave me confidence i never knew i had. >> luckily two of our lucky stars ended up at glider.

we love glider. >> the gym at bernal intermediate school packed with people who do not want to see their school closed. the district blames declining enrollment of the eight schools on the list the consolidation committee will recommend three to five for closure to the school board and they will make the decision in february. president trump is praising a move by the supreme court to allow his travel ban to go into effect for now. it covers people from chad, iran, libya, somalia, syria, yemen and north korea. the high court's ruling may not be the final board on the ban, though. federal appeals courts in san francisco and richmond, virginia will hear arguments this week on whether the latest version of the policy is lawful. from the live desk this morning one of the women accusing alabama senator candidate roy moore of inappropriate sexual behavior says she has new evidence against him, this comes as moore gets a boost of support from the gop just one week before election day. abc's kenneth moton is in washington with the details.

>> reporter: good morning. roy moore is getting a lot of help in this final week. former white house chief strategist steve bannon will rally with him tonight one day after president trump's endorsement. one week to go until election day in alabama and gop senate candidate roy moore now has a powerful ally, president trump. the president making the call from air force one to officially endorse moore who is accused of molesting teenage girls. >> roy moore denies it. >> reporter: this morning the "washington post" reports it interviewed an accuser who says she has new evidence against moore whom she dated when she was 17 and he was an assistant district attorney. the paper says the woman recently discovered handwritten notes from moore congratulating her on graduating from high school. moore's campaign called the accuser a democratic operative who is helping opponent doug jones. moore has denied all allegations from all of his accusers. many washington republicans jumped ship. 2012 gop presidential nominee mitt romney tweeted moore and the senate would be a stain on the gop and on the nation.

it is 6:44. this is a live picture from our sister station kabc in los angeles. as you can see this wildfire in ventura county is still raging out of control, a number of homes burning in this neighborhood. >> bay area first responders are now on the way. tiffany wilson live on the edge of the richmond san rafael bridge with that story. good morning, tiffany. >> reporter: good morning, natasha. three of the five oes engines are here right now, we are still waiting on a few more, they are coming from tiburon, san rafael, kent field, ross valley and marin county. fire departments a total of 22 tier in all are heading down to the thomas fire. now, they knew about this fire last night and they knew that they were going to be strong santa ana winds going through the ventura county area so they were not surprised when they got the call at 4:45 this morning to head down to the thomas fire and help out the firefighters down there. now, joining me now is the strike team leader jeff rowan.

are you expecting thisvery simiy fires you just fought. >> yes, it should be pretty similar depending on what the winds do down there. we could go to another fire, this he could have other fires that happened down there when we get down there but right now we're headed down to ventura. >> talking to some of the other firefighters who said it's pretty unusual to be sent out in december. >> it is pretty rare to come out in december, at least up in northern california. we do know that fire season never ends in southern california, though, so we're always ready to go. i can think of one time maybe a couple years ago we went up to reno and carson city, they had a fire in december for a few days. >> reporter: you're expecting to take six, seven hours to get down there, you will arrive around 2:00 p.m., what do you expect from there? >> we will check in at base camp, depending on what the fire does this morning and early afternoon i expect to get assigned to do some sort of structure protection or whatever they need when we get down there. >> reporter: jeff, thank you so much. best of luck to you and the entire crew. again, at least 150 structures have burned down there already, this he expect to see much of the same house and hillside type
