to where they were burning. and they were not able to fly helicopters. you have seen the helicopters. they are crucial in the firefight. they're ones that dropped the flame retardant. because the winds were just so sfrong smoke was too thick. it was decreasing the visibility to the ground. they were not able to fly which really put a hindrance on fighting the fires. >> surely an all too familiar scene. >> let's get a check on the winds that diana was talking about. this is southern california version with the winds. >> reporter: the strong wind is the major factor making the firefighting effort difficult. let's look at our satellite picture. especially from the northern most from santa barbara and of course, as wome said, the wind gusts, 68-mile-per-hour gusts.

67-mile-per-hour gusts on the ventura county coast. and l.a. county mountains, 78-mile-per-hour gusts in the last 24 hours. we have a red flag warning for high fire danger for an expansive area of southern california all the way to the mexican border. streel fire danger for an area with a population of over 5.8 million people. we're looking at gusts of 48 miles per hour. san fernando, 45. and into the next 24 hours, we won't see much change in the wind gusts by this time tomorrow. we'll still be looking at gusts between 40 and 50 miles per hour. and that is going to complicate containment and firefighting. we'll keep tabs on it and update out any changes. >> meantime, north by a firefighters are arriving to help fight ventura fire with.

the emergency strike team as they left richmond this morning. she has a story you'll see only on abc7 news. >> reporter: 22 north bay firefighters gathered in the pre dawn dark know greeting each other with hot cups of coffee. they started monitoring the raging thomas fire last night. >> they have predicted the worst winds of the season. so kind of had thea that maybe we would get called out. sure enough about, 4:30 we got call. >> the fire departments started packing up. about two hours later. the convoy assembled. they expect to drive to southern california to last about six or seven hours. they don't know how long they'll be away from home but they know there will be similar conditions to the wildfires. >> very similar to what happened
