re-election campaign. last month was a one-day strike. we're told this will go on another day if not much longer. >> i'm here to apologize to the residents of oakland who are being inconvenienced. >> the oakland mayor apologized to the city residents for a strike by nearly 3,000 city workers that shaft claims is unlawful. >> because we have not yet reached impasse, we do consider today's strike to be an unlawful action. and we will be taking the appropriate legal steps. >> i believe the mayor is incorrect. we're at an unfair labor practice strike. >> the unit says they had no choice, given the city's failure to neat wage demands and come to terms on other key issues. like mandatory overtime at the emergency dispax the center. and a heavy reliance on part time employees throughout the city. >> we have a city that continues to grow. and a work force that continues to shrink. and we just can't keep one the

mediation. with no new negotiations set, they tell us they will for sure be on strike. tomorrow that means many public services, city hall, public works, all of those close down tomorrow, at least. these workers tell us they will decide what happens after tomorrow. they will take it day by day. live in oakland. laura anthony. >> thank you. a shocking discovery on the campus of a san jose high school. a man was found shot to death hours before classes started. and police are now looking for the killer. live in san jose with the latest. >> reporter: police do not know who the shooter is. they say that they are following leads at this point. the body was found here right behind the football and baseball fields.

>> rose vazquez was shocked when she saw the body. >> it is a littttle alarming. for me, it is the students wait to hear what's happening. >> it was found around 7:00 this morning at the back of the school. police stay man was shot at least once. >> we're told the body was located by staff. the officers arrived and they located an adult male deceased on campus near the football field. >> school remained open because the crime scene was contained and far enough away from students. it was not a student or a school staff member. he was latino and between 20 to 25 years old. some neighbors heard gunfire last night. >> it was just two shots. bang, bang. so sgik so fast. >> and you didn't think anything of it. >> no. it happens. so around here. fireworks and all that. >> homicide detectives spent the

day evidence and knocking on doors. they also scoured for security video that may exist. at this point they don't have a suspect or a motive. the coroner has the body and is working the identify the man. abc7 news. a quick thinking driver saved a family from a fire this morning. we're told the driver saw this home on fire. then learned that the elderly resident was still inside. the man forced open the door. found the woman and got her out to safety. as you can see, this fire eventually spread to the entire house. luckily by then, no one was inside. good job. now to the wildfires burning in southern california. >> check out this video from our sister station, kabc in last. this is sunland. >> it is one of five burning. the others are in ventura and

san bernardino. >> so far the fires have destroyed more than 150 structures. they've charred about 71 square miles. >> and force someday 20,000 people from their homes. and we learned at least two firefighters bl hurt. the scene is frighteningly like the wildfires two months ago. >> and listen to this. we've heard this before. >> this has been quite an epic fight. we're trying to use our resources as carefully as we can. also fighting fire aggressively. it's this the worst i've seen in my 20-year career. >> there is the thomas fire, then the creek fire, the two fires outside of san bernardino are burning as well. the biggest one is the so-called thomas fire. that one is in ventura county. and here's a look at how big

the smoke plume is right now. you can see it graphically. more now from the reporter in ventura county. >> you can see in the foot hill area of ventura, california. this home completely lost. tough decisions for firefighters. they had to make choices as to what homes they thought they could save and what homes they thought they could burn down. as you look over here off to the side, we walked up the canyon. we saw at least ten other homes completely on fire. anxious moments for neighbors. we'll ask mike question. you live right here and the home across the street is on fire. what are you thinking about? >> i feel so bad for the people who lost their houses. >> reporter: you've been up since when? >> we got up at 3:00 in the morning west start wetting down roof. we don't have any more pressure so there's nothing more we can do.

>> he san francisco firefighters are driving down at this hour to los angeles county to help battle the creek fire burning northwest of pasadena. crews loaded up their gear before taking off. they're the latest bay area strike team deployed to fight the wildfires which include the thomas fire in ventura county. >> the south hasn't got much rain this fall. and then we expected this. we have warning the last few days. a red flag warning and we knew it could happen. >> the state's office of emergency services had been calling on fire departments all day to join the fight to the south. if you have friends or family in southern california, we're sending out push alerts on the evacuations. down led to abc 7 news

two teenagers charged with a death appeared in court for the first time today. as melanie woodrow explains, technology may have fueled the cite but it also played in the arrests. >> daniel carlos was using a popular app to sell his iphone. >> he had brought another person with him. his brother. he did it at a gas station in a public location on a saturday, on a major thorough fare. >> reporter: but for whatever reason on november 18th, 18-year-old marcus shot carlos. 18-year-old jordan patent is also charged with murder. sergeant kelly says patent drove the get away car. they saw who he was speaking with over the app. >> that communication was very

george is blaming himself for the outcome of the kate steinle murder trial. the man who shot steinle was found not guilty. >> let me -- >> the district attorney admitted last thursday's verdict was hard to accept. his staff believed it had enough evidence to convict jose ines garcia zarate with murder. as the evidence piled up, they said the court agreed the jury should be given the option of first-degree murder. >> the judge agreed that he felt there was sufficient evidence to put the question to the jury. >> instead, zarate was only

another scam can come from someone pretending to be a delivery service. they ask for personal information to deliver a package but don't do it. legitimate companies don't ask for that information and the postal service usually attempts to deliver in person. they won't call and ask you for your number. let's take a look at live doppler 7. you will notice that the skies are clear here in the bay area. and we are really going to notice that the temperatures will take a nosedive. it is going to be a cold night ahead when you check out the temperatures for santa rosa. from 52 tonight all the way down to 30 degrees by 7:00 tomorrow morning. so sub freezing. the winds did drop off this
