[ cheers and applause ] yeah. that's right. even in television, a woman has to work two jobs to make the same money as a man. as a black woman, i'm actually headed to my third job when i finish here. you know, i was a little worried i wasn't going to make it here tonight. i slipped and fell at work on blackish the other night. i fell down. i was walking into the fake kitchen of my fake house but it had a really real floor. and i went down! hard! i was blackish and bluish. there is something i wanted to talk about tonight. that's the hollywood sexual harassment scandal. first of all, let's start with the fact it isn't a search scandal. it isn't a hollywood scandal. it isn't even a scandal. it is a systemic problem about the abuse of power that takes place across all industries. and has enabled a culture of inequity to persist for far too long. over the past few months, yes, the past few months, countless brave women have come forward to share their experiences. and while i'm not totally surprised by these stories, it seems like quite a few men are. treating another human being with respect isn't complicated. but it seems a bit confusing for a lot of men out there. so i wrote a book. families, a black family, a white family, who end up living in the mississippi delta during the jim crow era. and they end up learning how to love each other and they end up learning that they're exactly the same. and they have to help each other do a lot on, through trials and tribulations. and it is about how our black men went off to war and they fought as free men. but they came back to the southern places and still being called names and being lynched. it is about love being a silver lining. no matter how bad someone treats you or try to take something away from you, if you use your heart, you can walk away live in the situation with love. so love is the silver lining. it is about relationships and friendships and it is really a love story. these movies don't ever get a happy ending. i just told -- if you didn't see it -- >> tracee: it's streaming.

>> it is very powerful and there is a happy ending. it is a very relative story to today as well. people don't seem to get the memorand memo that we are free. we're all free. >> tracee: yeah. an important movie. when you look back, very important to match it up with where we are now. where did you shoot this film? >> new orleans. >> tracee: was it a long shoot? new orleans, that's hot. >> well, it was shot in like 29 days. >> tracee: 29 days. >> my part was probably a month, a month and a half. it was very hot. like 180 degrees snooflt that's very hot, mary. >> i mean it felt like it was very hot. the conditions were really, really real. it kept us in character most of the time. the heat and the mosquitos and the mud was real. the rain was real. everything was real. and the feelings that we felt

while we were shooting the movie. it was like we were reliving what our ancestors had to go through. and this movie is about, it is an slave movie. these people are free and proud. it is not that type of movie again. it is a hopeful movie and an optimistic movie, i think. >> tracee: i can't wait to watch it all the way through. to continue seeing mary doing her extraordinary acting and sharing that love. >> tracee: yes, amanda. as a known feminist that people know you're a feminist, what are some of the things that people, men specifically, say to you, ask you? what are some of the questions you get in response? this book or just in general? >> this book is called it's messy on boys, boobs and bad ass women. a subject i am very talkative about. i have an ally and a son. >> tracee: i like men, too. >> and there's nothing wrong that and that's important to remember. >> tracee: it is not against men. it is about the equality. >> so we have to create bridges. especially now more than ever. to connect each other. we are so disenfranchised and it is men and women. and at some point we have to understand each other better so we can move forward without all of these issues coming into play. one of the biggest questions men are asking me now is what does

consent look like? in all seriousness, i have, two men i know who have been publicly accused of rape in the last week. i've spoken to both of them and i've had very honest conversations with them. both of them maintained that those experiences were consensual. and i said how there possible that you believe it was consensual and she has filed a rape case against you? how far apart are we? men are asking, can do i this or that? >> tracee: one of the things i like to think to myself, how would you greet another man? >> maybe you would be touching his -- >> tracee: i don't see larry, david, and jerry seinfeld pressing against each other when they give a greeting. >> no. but i sat next to larry david at dinner not long ago. i was so excited. >> tracee: he sat down next to
