good morning. on this wednesday, i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm diane macedo. here are some of the top headlines we're following on "world news now." president trump is moving ahead with plans to break with long-held policy and recognize jerusalem as israel's capital. the region is bracing for violence and the u.s. is accused of on taking sides. breaking news overnight, dozens of buildings, including many homes, have been destroyed by out of control wildfires in southern california. tens of thousands of residents are in shelters in the overnight hours and today's weather may make the situation worse. and intelligence officials have reportedly broken up a plot to assassinate british prime minister theresa may. it was supposed to take place at 10 downing street. two men arrested on terrorism charges are due in court today.

remember that man who spent his last $20 for gas for a stranded driver in philadelphia? well, he's now a homeowner. johnny bobbit used some of the $400,000 raised on a gofundme page to buy a new house. congratulations to him. those are some of our top stories on this wednesday, december 6th. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> that's one of my favorite stories of the year. so glad he's doing well. we'll have a little bit more on that. but we begin this half hour with a seismic shift in u.s. policy in the middle east. president trump is expected to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. >> the president plans to make the announcement from the white house today. it fulfills a promise he made on the campaign trail. that said, to move the u.s. embassy to jerusalem could threaten peace efforts and ignite a new wave of violence in the region. abc's martha radatz has more.

>> reporter: president trump's calls to arab leaders, one after another, prompting new alarm, and israel is bracing for trouble. recognizing jerusalem as the capital and moving the embassy could end chances for peace and begin a cycle of violence. egypt's president saying a move could undermine peace opportunities. jordan's king saying it will provoke muslims and christians alike and palestinian president mahmoud abbas calling it unacceptable, with various palestinian factions calling for three days of rage. >> it's safe to say other than israel who thinks that this move is 22 years overdue, that all of the feedback he's getting from world leaders is overwhelmingly negative about this idea? >> no. again, he spoke with five leaders. that's hardly indicative of everybody across the globe. >> reporter: but there is no other country in the world who

has its embassy in jerusalem. president trump does not want to preclude the possibility and the embassy move could take years. u.s. officials are already sending warnings about potential widespread demonstrations, starting wednesday. telling american citizens to avoid places where crowds are gathering, while prohibiting u.s. government employees and their families from entering jerusalem's old city, bethlehem and neighboring areas. and marine corps fast teams are being provided for extra security in some places in the region. >> as people across the region prepare for the possible repercussion, some say the move could end washington's role as mediator. >> for a look at what's happening on the ground this morning, let's turn on to abc's molly hunter who joins us live from jerusalem. molly, good morning. what's the reaction this

morning? >> reporter: good morning. that's right. it's on the cover of every page this morning. everyone is talking about it. it's only 9:30 in the morning. already, all night the arab leaders had emergency meetings, the palestinian president met with his staff ask senior officials late into the night. and late last night, the palestinians announced three days of rage. it will start today and go through friday. we're not sure what that will look like. that could be incredibly dramatic across the west bank and jerusalem and gaza. we're not sure. we're watching, obviously, very, very closely. jerusalem, you guys, is a very emotional issue for palestinians. because it's an issue they always thought would be decided in peace negotiations. they feel the u.s. can no longer be an honest broker. the u.s. can no longer be the middleman shuffling back and forth between two sides now that they've come out and said this. and now the al aqsa mosque is in the old city, the third holiest city in islam.

this isn't just a local issue. it affects muslims all over the world and all over the region. the state department is bracing for reaction. we are watching for the possible violent reaction. and the israeli military as beefed up security in jerusalem and is on stand by for protests and will be watching very closely. diane. >> that, indeed. molly, as you know, i was there in jerusalem just a few months ago, spoke with some officials there who were talking about this possible news. and they were saying that it would be a controversial decision. why exactly would it be? >> reporter: it's a very, very controversial decision. there's a reason that no other u.s. administration, despite the support for israel, there's a reason that no other u.s. administration has done this. it's a city that stokes the both israelis and palestinians lay claim to. they're divided and each considers it the capital. according to a source close to the white house, the president wants to keep this broad, not predicting the outcome of any future peace negotiations. but, twice, the muslim world and palestinians will not see it

that way. the other thing i want to mention that's notable, the president is expected for the first time to support the two-state solution which is in line with u.s. policy. but honestly, the seismic shift, the recognition of jerusalem will over-shadow that. >> so, molly, with all this controversy, really quick, why do this? >> reporter: look, i mean, that's anyone's guess. there are a lot of people in washington trying to figure out why president trump would do that. we've heard his argument. it's fulfilling a major campaign programs. but we've also heard almost every candidate for the last two decades promise the same thing. and in addition to arab leaders, analysts, experts, former negotiators say there's no real good interest served by doing this right now. they say it will hurt goodwill between any negotiators right now. it will not serve the u.s. to be this middleman, this negotiator if they do this, but he's going through with it. so we'll see how this goes. >> we will.

abc's molly hunter live for us in jerusalem. thanks, molly. we move now to the russia probe. sources say special counsel robert mueller has subpoenaed the deutsche bank. it may be a sign that the investigation is stemming towards president trump's finances. the bank had loaned him over $300 million for real estate transactions in the past. but the white house says any report tying subpoenas to the president's financials are false. and donald trump jr. is heading to capitol hill today to meet with the house intelligence committee behind closed doors. he's expected to answer questions about the 2016 meeting with a russian lawyer. nbc news is reporting that the russian attorney told the senate committee that don jr. asked her if she had evidence of illegal donations to the clinton foundation. she reportedly said he lost interest after learning she had no new information. now to our other breaking news overnight, tens of thousands of southern californians are spending their night in shelters because of out of control wildfires.

>> the fires are so massive you can actually see the smoke from space. the smoke is creating unhealthy air quality, even for those away from the flames. >> the big ventura county, the thomas fire, as it's called, has destroyed dozens of buildings, including many homes, at least one large apartment complex and a psychiatric hospital. >> that said, there is another fire burning out of control in the city of los angeles. the creek fire has shut down the 280 freeway and has destroyed at least 30 homes right there in the los angeles area. and dozens of schools have canceled classes for today due to the fires. >> meanwhile, helicopter crews working into the night, dropping fire retardant and water are trying desperately to get this under control. >> on the ground, firefighters are stretched thin and conditions are not good. kabc's annabelle menez reports. >> reporter: shouting orders to coordinate quickly, firefighters stood against these tall flames, inching closer and closer to homes. >> fire flared up on the backside of this hill that we're on.

it inched up on the homes on the backside of them. >> reporter: their most important resource was not easily accessible. >> there's no working water supply on this street right now, so we have to shuttle the water all the way down about a block away. >> reporter: winds picked up during the intense fire fight, tossing embers in every direction. while evacuation orders were in place, some like jim martin stayed behind, using a garden hose to protect his home. >> i haven't slept in two days, so it's -- it's a little rough. i'm looking for a good night's sleep, but i don't know if i can, because of all the flareups. >> reporter: once most of the flames in this area were put out, we could see martin was relieved. >> extremely relieved, yes. i don't do drugs, but i wish i had some in the last couple of days. >> okay. that was unusual. we're going to continue to keep an eye on the situation there in

southern california. we move on now. two high school students in washington state are hospitalized this morning, recovering from gunshot wounds. they were shot near their high school, about 45 miles south of seattle, then went back to the school's campus. that prompted a lockdown for several hours as police searched for the suspects. one person is in custody and the police say the incident may be gang related. one of america's oldest watchdogs is offering an alarm. over a new app offered in cars by general motors. the national safety council says gm's new marketplace app will contribute to distracted driving. it allows drivers to browse deals and place orders with several major brands, including starbucks, priceline and dunkin donuts. gm insists the app complies with voluntary driver distracted guidelines. there's a new mystery on mars, and photographic proof of it. what is that? some say it's a cannonball.

and yet, there it is. >> reporter: the thomas fire one of multiple blazes scorching the state. to the south, the creek fire on the northern edge of los angeles, forcing more evacuations. that fire also out of control. and in santa clarita, the rye fire jumping interstate 5, shutting down that major highway. the winds have picked up again here in ventura and the embers are skipping house to house and jumps over some and destroying others. the other problem, water pressure. firefighters say they had to let some house the burn because they didn't have enough pressure in the hydrants, perhaps because of the power outages. marcus moore, abc news, california. >> at least 150 structures have been destroyed by that wildfire in ventura county. >> and that includes at least one large apartment complex and the psychiatric hospital. you saw it referred to there in marcus' report. but officials expect the true

but christmas will go on, just not here. >> yeah, clearly tough on the people and tough on the animals, there, too. check it out. one kabc reporter helped rescue a lost dog from the creek fire. that dog is on its way to a shelter. a lot of people in this area also have horses. there are many ranches there and stables. so there's a major effort under way to evacuate all the horses as well. quite an undertaking. so the weather conditions over the next 24 hours will be key to the fire fighting effort. accuweather's paul williams tracking the southern california outlook. paul. >> good morning, diane, kendis. we have big problems in southern california. the fire threat is very real and continuing to stay that way because of very gusty winds and the lack of moisture there in general with low humidity in the first place. we have activated red flag warnings. that means we have parched conditions setting up perfectly for more fires. take a look at the winds here. look at this acceleration of the santa ana winds. peak winds of between 60 to 80 miles per hour and stronger than that from los angeles to san diego.

roy moore got some high profile help on the campaign trail. former white house strategist steve bannon appeared on a rally. he attacked mitt romney who has said that moore would be, quote, a stain on the gop and the nation if he was elected to the senate. bannon also noted his service in the army while calling romney a draft dodger. he railed against republican senator jeff flake who posted a picture of a $100 donation he sent to moore's democratic opponent, doug jones. flake wrote country over party on that check. election day in alabama is next tuesday. and if you haven't made your holiday plans for christmas, you might want to hurry up. flights are filling up quickly. more than 51 million passengers around the world will take at least one plane trip. that's 3.5% increase over last year. the busiest days will be december 21st, 22nd and 26th. the lightest days, december 16th, christmas eve, christmas day and new year's eve.

we're keeping an eye on the southern california fires overnight, including this one in ventura county that has burned possibly hundreds of homes. nearly all schools in that county closed today. overseas, we're getting our first look at a dramatic attempt in ukraine to detain an opposition leader. agents stormed his home, chased him onto the roof, took him down and loaded him into a van. several hundred protesters surrounded the van triggering a tense standoff that lasted for hours. he was eventually freed. in a stunning new development, russia's olympic team has been banned from the
