california tonight as more hills near los angeles go up in flames. tonight there are new evacuations as well. and the flames could get worse before they get better. >> the greatest threat is and will always continue to be the wind. >> tonight, the l.a. fire chief is describing the fire conditions as unlike anything he has ever seen before. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze. the largest fire is the thomas fire in ventura county. it's grown to 90,000 acres, destroying at least 150 structures and it's just 5% con stained. the goal is to make sure the flames don't cross sinatra 405 and reach the getty museum. celebrities like lionel richie are among those evacuated. he canceled his show in las vegas last night to get home. >> the santa ana winds fuelling the flames are predicted to get even worse. marci gonzalez has the latest. >> those raging flames

threatening commuters along the busy 405 freeway. >> wow, look at this. >> and charring multimillion-dollar homes in l.a.'s elite bel air neighborhood. >> it's really frightening there are a lot of homes here. >> just one of four major fires burning out of control in southern california. >> of course i'm concerned. that's why i'm putting nearly everything in. >> nearly 2,000 people ordered to evacuate in los angeles and ventura counties, including at this nursing home. the number expected to climb as the flames spread. more than 80,000 acres scorched so far, fueled by strong santa ana winds, expected to intensify overnight. >> the wind is expected to kick up in some places to 70 miles an hour. that's hurricane-force winds. >> neighbors pitching in to save each other's homes and pets. this horse rescued from a ranch where more than two dozen others died. >> when they pulled him out, the stable was on fire. >> an emotional, exhausting few days for residents.

>> hot? >> yeah. >> hot. >> and firefighters are again preparing for another long, tough night ahead. and those strong winds aren't expected to let up before the end of the week. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles county, california. >> all right. of course the weather conditions on the fire lines are absolutely critical in the next few hours and days. >> so sandhya patel is here to check on the winds. they're going to remain pretty strong. >> absolutely. the strong santa ana winds are going to continue to remain very high as we head into tomorrow, dan and kristen. let me show you the current wind gusts right now. 21 miles per hour in simi valley, santa clarita 17 miles per hour wind gusts. but that i have been stronger, up to 85 across parts of ventura county. right now we're seeing some wind gusts in and around southern california between 50 and 60 miles an hour. midnight, you will notice that the winds are still going strong, picking up at 3:00 a.m., to about 43 miles per hour. the strong gusty winds will mean extreme fire danger will continue as we head into

tomorrow night, even into part of friday. may see explosive growth of the fire. definitely are watching the visible satellite picture. you can see just how far that plume of smoke was extending from the southern california coast. red flag warnings are in effect until saturday night at 8:00 p.m. this picture, courtesy of nasa from the international space station tweeted to me by one of my followers. you can see the astronaut captured the intensity and the nature of how far that plume of smoke traveled from those wildfires. i'll be back with a look at our weather coming up. dan? >> okay, thanks, sandhya, very much. breaking news from oakland where a young child was shot tonight. this is just into the newsroom. it happened while the girl was in a car with her mother on simson street. someone opened fire on them for some reason. only the girl was hit. she is said to be 3, maybe 4 years old. her family drove her to children's hospital where she is being treated for a wound to her arm. you can can see the bullet holes in the car there. no arrests have been made. but very, very scary.

well, sick and tired of mind-numbing, day-ruining traffic on the bay bridge? there is an ambitious new plan tonight to solve that mess by building a brand-new bridge. abc 7 news reporter katie etehs is live at yerba buena island tonight with the story. katie? >> dan, we all feel like our own commutes are the worse. but the ones leading to the eastern span of the bay bridge are actually on the top of the list for the worst commutes in the bay area there is a proposal to build an additional bridge to ease the conjunction. but the mtc says not so fast. the commute is congested, to say the least. >> it's rigorous. it's terrible. it's awful. >> reporter: senator dianne feinstein say the solution could be an additional bay bridge south of the current one. >> i think it's a good idea. i like the idea, honestly. >> the bay area will soon be voting on regional measure 3, a proposed toll increase. congressman desonier say the

residents need to get something. >> they need to see a benefit specifically through the corridors for what they're being asked to spend more money on tolls. >> crossing the bay at 238 to interstate 80 is not a new idea. >> we have studied this numerous times, starting in 1990. well did it again in 2000. we updated again in 2010. >> if they tell you this is the cost and this is what you have to sacrifice, sure, it would be nice, right? but who is going to fund it? >> keep in mind that a structure across the bay would easily cost $10 billion. easily. that's about a $5 toll on every bridge across the entire bay area. >> a new bridge wouldn't be eough says the metropolitan transportation commission. >> there are many reasons to build infrastructure in the bay area. it's just that it's always larger than just one thing. >> he says voters expect bart tubes, bike lines and more. a bridge isn't as simple as it sounds. katie etehs, abc 7 news. >> the bay area is respected in

a big way in "time" magazine's person of the year issue. a former uber engineer and a san francisco lobbyist are among the women on the cover. they're being called the silence breakers. abc 7 news reporter lilian kim is here lili lili lilian. >> that lobbyist is adama iwu. she spoke with abc at san francisco office to talk about the cover and her hopes for the future. >> well, i had a hard time getting to sleep because uwasn't sure. but i thought this might be happening. >> things certainly changed for adama iwu by the time she woke up this morning. the san francisco lobbyist for visa can now be seen on newsstands and all over social media. along with ashley judd, taylor swift, susan fowler and farm worker isabelle pascual, aye wu was on the cover. they have been called the silence breakers. in iwu's case she wrote an open letter calling for an end to sexual harassment at the capitol. >> it turns out that women were

to step aside over claims of sexual misconduct. those lawmakers include california senators dianne feinstein and kamala harris. >> the type of complaints and accusations have led me to believe that it is probably in the best interests of a lot of people that he resigns. >> franken tweeted earlier today that he is talking with his family. and any reports of a final decision about his future are inaccurate. 3,000 city workers in oakland will continue their strike for a third day tomorrow. that means all non-emergency city services will remain closed. the union wants a two-year deal with a 4% raise each year. mayor libby schaaf says that could lead to job losses. the city council will meet in closed session again tomorrow to conference with labor negotiators to see if they're any closer to a deal. confusion in the oakland unified district tonight after more than 2800 employees had their paychecks pulled out of their bank accounts. some have now been overpaid. the district says in an effort to reverse the original error,

all employees were paid again. those who received double payments must now give the money back to the district, of course. the district says it is investigating how the original error was made. people in san francisco are asked tonight to be on the lookout for two dogs that attacked a woman and killed her dog. police released these photos today as they search for the animals. they say the dogs were unleashed when they went on the attack on brunswick street in the crocker amazon neighborhood last month. the dogs weigh about 70 to 80 pounds. one had a pink collar, the other a gray one. the owner of a san francisco art gallery is among three people charged with illegally selling ivory. abc 7 news was in chinatown at lovell's gallery where the store owner, a store manager and a salesperson face charges. the district attorney says undercover officers purchased ivory there about a year ago. some say it's a dying art. one of the last known places making tofu by hand is closing up shop here in the bay area.

after 70 years and three generations, a san jose tofu business is closing up shop. >> the owners believe they're one of the last places making tofu by hand, but they just can't do it anymore. >> katie marzullo has the story from san jose. >> my grandfather started the business right after the war. >> that was 70 years ago. and the family has been making tofu by hand ever since, with the original equipment. chester and amy are the third generation owners of san jose tofu. when we caught up with them

wednesday afternoon, they had already run out of product. >> i don't care for store-bought tofu at all. >> gina yamaguchi has been a customer her entire life. >> i'm sad that my kids aren't going to grow up with it like i did. >> the thing is amy and chester are simply tired. they work seven days a week. >> san jose tofu? >> and making tofu by hand requires heavy lifting. part of the backbreaking process is lifting at least four of these nearly 50-pound blocks on to the tofu. and they do that several times a day. amy and chester want to relax and travel while they still have their health. >> maybe taking a trip outside of the united states. i would like to play some golf. >> still, it was not an easy decision to make, closing the family business. >> very sad. very broken hearted. it's so hard to say goodbye to all the customer. >> more than goodbye, they want to say thank you.

san jose tofu will close its doors december 30th. in san jose, katie marzullo, abc 7 news. >> bittersweet, but good luck in retirement. well, tonight proof a mountain lion and her cub not seen since the north bay fires are alive and well. this mountain lion and her 8-month-old cub were being monitored by audubon canyon ranch. but all their trail cameras were destroyed in the flames. yesterday, for the first time since october, the team was just thrilled when new cameras picked up the pair in bennett valley. >> that's pretty exciting. the san jose sharks help spread some holiday cheer tonight. abc 7 news was at the sharks practice facility where the team held its annual holiday assist party. the organization hosted more than three dozen families, some of whom lost their homes in the north bay wildfires. players adopted families and bought gifts for them. >> any chance you get to do something like this and sort of ease the pain a little bit the best you can. >> i'm still high on the whole

thing. what this sharks organization is doing here tonight is just very touching. >> the sharks foundation has hosted the holidays, this program, for 17 years. >> abc 7 news was also at at&t park where the giants hosted a holiday party for children and families from homeless shelters and programs all across the city. kids who attended got their face painted. there we go. decorated cookies, and of course got a chance to meet santa. this is the 17th year of the holiday party, many families say this was the best one yet. and look at all the smiling faces. they obviously had a great time. >> it makes it all worthwhile for the organizers, right? the weather has been great. a little chilly. >> chilly down here, windy on the fire lines in southern california. sandhya patel is back with that. >> never a dull moment in the weather department. i want to show you the changes that are under way right now from our mount tamalpais camera. you see a very shaky view of san francisco. the winds have increased. take a look at the wind gusts

right now. mount tam, 28 miles per hour. we have an offshore wind in the oakland hills, gusting to 33. it's a very drying wind. so please be vigilant. i'm not trying to scare you. but fire danger obviously will be increasing as the gusty winds continue. temperatures right now across the bay area where the wind is not really an issue, you're getting chilly. 37 degrees right now in santa rosa. but where it is still gusty right now, half moon bay, 57 degree readings. so definitely a big contrast there. and we are going to see that those temperatures will tumble in the wind sheltered valleys down to the mid and upper 30s. but right around the bay and along the coast, or the areas impacted by the wind will stay up in the 40s and the 50s. i do want to show you the highlights for the coming days. it is going to be gusty in the hills and also along the coast. chilly start tomorrow morning for the valleys, basically looking at a mild, sunny afternoon. unfortunately, the dry pattern is going to continue through the

weekend and into the middle of next week. right now a live look from our east bay hills camera. this is also a little bouncy here. because the winds are gusting. and once again, we're keeping an eye on the winds. also keeping an eye on the air quality. sunset 4:51 tonight. east bay hills camera. while the view, the intensity of the colors here was really incredible, it was caused by all the pollution that is in the air, the haze as we have an area of high pressure just putting a cap on our atmosphere. so we're not able to stir up the atmosphere and clean out the air. and as a result, air quality will suffer. moderate for your thursday across the entire bay area. poor air quality in the north bay friday, saturday, and sunday and moderate across the rest of the region. not expecting a strong sea breeze here to really bring us some fresh, clean air. look at live doppler. this image is really unbelievable. we have a large ridge of high pressure. and that's really diverting the storm track well into canada. so we're not expect anything rainy time soon. as you look at live doppler 7

right now, it is clear near the bay area in terms of how much rain we get. average for san francisco, san francisco 4 1/2. san jose just over 2 inches. and so far we have started out december with zero rain. it's not looking like it over the next seven days. but on the 20th of december, we might see something. mild tomorrow afternoon. we'll be nearing some records in the south bay. 70 in san jose. morgan hill feels more like spring than fall, that's for sure. on the peninsula upper 60s for palo alto. 64 for pacific california. sunshine in downtown san francisco. 65 degrees. north bay, you're going to be seeing temperatures around upper 60s to low 70s from ukiah to santa rosa. east bay above average. 66 oakland. inland areas. 66 degrees there in concord. 67, livermore. accuweather seven-day forecast. chilly for some of the valley locations tomorrow morning. sunny, mild afternoon. minor dip in the temps friday. a few more high clouds. but really overall going into the weekend, it's dry with low to upper 60s.
