between 10 and 20% containment. so some progress there. the largest of the fires is still growing. from the smoke-lined coast inland, the firefight intensifying as the thomas fire burns out of control. more than 96,000 acres charred there. just one of four wildfires still raging in southern california. the flames fanned by intense santa ana winds, gusting in some places at hurricane force. weakening some after daybreak but still an unpredictable threat. >> the wind driven event. >> reporter: firefighters working tirelessly on the stir ball fire in plaques burned right up along one of the busiest freeways in the country along the 405. >> a lot of homes here. >> reporter: and ravaged multimillion-dollar homes. but officials repeating the warning that the risk is far from over.

>> and we still ask that folks stay away from their homes. we're not completely out of the woods yet. >> reporter: at this nursing home and in neighborhoods, thousands of mandatory evacuation orders in place. >> i didn't take things that i need. pictures and things like that that are very dear to me. >> reporter: in other communities, residents now returning, finding utter destruction and small signs of hope. don meyers digging his wife julie's wedding ring out of rubble of their home. dropping one knee and proposing again. he and there is now a new wildfire down in san diego county, forcing more evacuations. there is not much relief in sight with these strong winds expected to continue into the weekend. live in sylmar, california. >> and we're getting a bird's eye view of the thomas fire. the aircraft took this photo

showing a gigantic plume over ventura county earlier this week. nasa says the aircraft wasn't even planning to capture the photo. it was actually performing an engineering flight test of one of the instruments when it spotted all that smoke. a look at these infrared satellites. it can be seen in orange. the burn scar is brown and unburned areas are in green. these fires could go down as one of the most destructive ever and are spreading at about an acre per second. which is extremely he fast. >> now check the out. a man risked his own life to save a wild rabbit. that got dangerously close to flames along highway 1 north of ventura. the daring rescue was captured by a news photographer. the man knelt down, stopped the rabbit in its tracks as you saw earlier and was able to pick it up and save it. here's a look at another fire burning this murrieta in riverside county.

you can see the smoke rising from the fire that's burning down there. this one started at 1:00 is that has grown tow 220 acres and triggered evacuations. stay with us for the very latest. we'll bring you the latest developmentes on air, online and on the abc7 news app. another dangerous fire, the lilac fire started around 11:00 this morning. it has already torched at least 2,000 acres near town of fallbrook. at least five structures have been destroyed. residents are being evacuated. it has fromprompted the complet closure of highway 76. >> we have a live look from mount tam and the tower cameras. you can see it is really hazy outside. >> let's check in with spencer christian with a forecast and a warning for the next few days. >> that's true.

the haze is significant. we're not likely to lose the haze over the next few days. in fact, here's a look at a close-up image of the smoke billowing out of the fires. it is being swept out to sea. notice how the smoke curves northward and is being pushed into our area by the circulation, the clockwise flow around the center of high pressure over the state borderline between california and nevada. that smoke will continue tow move into our area, reducing our air quality. and as a result, we're going to have poor air quality in the north bay. especially over the next three days and a spare the air alert has been issued for the next three days as well. that means wood burning is unlawful during a spare the air alert. we'll keep you posted on the air quality here and the winds in the area of the southern california fires. >> thank you. an elderly man died and several others were affected by a carbon monoxide leak early this

morning. it happened just before 4:30 in san francisco. abc7 news reporter melanie with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: the san francisco fire department said an old water heater is to blame for carbon monoxide poisoning. there are now flowers outside for an elderly man who didn't survive. the detectors woke them up overnight. we just got it installed in october so we're really thanking the universe and our management company. >> reporter: when firefighters arrived, they said they had to break down the door of the downstairs unit. >> we located a female downstairs. >> reporter: paramedics worked a man for 45 minutes but he passed away. the woman was taken to st. francis memorial hospital for hyperbaric treatment. >> our hope was delivering 100%

he oxygen will restore her own oxygen levels to flaurl by displacing the carbon carbon monoxide. >> pretty tragic to watch him die. >> reporter: pg & e restored gas to the upstairs unit. two firefighters were also treated on site in san francisco. melanie woodrow, abc7 news. st. fras it is memorial hospital officials say there's is the only hospital in san francisco that offers hyperbaric treatment. police are holding a town hall meeting in regard to the officer involved shooting of a carjacking suspect. they have released few d.c. on the shooting that killed her. the officer who fired the shots had only been on the job for three days.

we were also told, he fired the shots through the closed passenger side window of the cruiser. the meeting begins at 6:00 at the true hope church on gilman avenue in the neighborhood. sky 7 flew over san francisco bay off the sunnyvale shoreline after a body was found in the water. sheriff's divers helped recover the body from the bay. they're trying to find out if the person was theville of a crime or some kind of accident. the santa clara medical officer will he work on identifying the person and how they died. a federal government shutdown has been averted, at least for now. a short time ago, the house and the senate pass ad tell player funding bill. that will keep the government running through december 22nd. now a story you'll see only on abc7 news. a uc berkeley law student gets to ask a lot of questions of attorney general jeff sessions and the exchange gets a little testy. >> the video was just released

outside the u.s. a skunk is recovering after it discovered poison in a rat bait box. anfficer took it to a veterinarian where they cut the heavy duty plastic off and they freed the skunk. the skunk didn't suffer serious injuries. but did it eat the rat poison. they say that skunk should be able to return to the wild. hopefully away from humans. this is video of doctors treating the dog named loca following a devastating attack by another dog. while the students treated wounds, students treated an exo skeleton mask based on a ct scan of the head. it is the first dog to be outfitted with the mask which have been in development for years. so far, it has been a success.

new wildfires have broken out in southern california resulting in even more evacuations. the santa ana winds are not letting up. a red flag warning has been extended through sunday. check this out. the national weather service showed this picture of a very smoky sunrise in monterey. it shows the wind fire bringing the smoke up here to the north. now, the preliminary hearing for the two men charged with manslaughter in the ghost ship fire continued today. leslie brinkley tweeted this photo saying one witness who testified was sobbing uncontrollably. leslie will have more at 5:00. democratic senator al franken said he will step down in the coming weeks. this comes after accusation of sexual misconduct and calls from his own party to resign.
