larry naser has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for possessing child pornography. that's the first of three sentences for nassar. he will learn his punishment in state court next month for pleading guilty to molesting gymnasts. while claiming to treat their injuries. he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars. former south carolina police officer michael slager has been sentenced for the shooting death of walter scott in north charleston. in court, messages of forgiveness between the families of the two men. abc's steve osunsami was there. >> reporter: the former south carolina police officer in this alarming cell phone video is headed to federal prison for 20 years, one of the longest sentences ever handed down to the an officer in a racially-charged shooting. in court, families on both sides broke into tears as the judge sent 36-year-old michael slager away. from the beginning, he claimed self-defense. >> fired until the threat was

gone. >> reporter: judge david norton refused to believe this saying slager shot an unarmed man in the back as he ran away. >> my soul is rejoicing right now! >> reporter: the family of 50-year-old walter scott told slager they forgive him for everything. slager says he's grateful, telling them i wish i could go back and change that day. >> he never said sorry. today, he did. he apologized to the family. he called each and every one of our names in court today. and apologized. so who are we not to forgive? >> reporter: there are no winners here. one man is dead and another is leaving behind a young child as he heads to prison. slager's team has two weeks to decide if they'll appeal. steve osunsami, abc news, charleston. traffic apps are facing new criticism for sending travelers on to local roads clogging them up for residents. >> one of those places is in lee on na, new jersey, near the

good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kenneth moten in for kendis gibson. here are some of the top headlines we're following on "world news now." new fires erupt in california. the newest fire has leveleded at least 20 homes. overall nearly 200,000 have been forced to flee their homes and containment is days and in some cases weeks away. full details ahead. president trump is expected to sign a short-term bill passed by congress to keep the government from shutting down. they now have two weeks to find a long-term budget solution, but democrats and republicans are still far apart on a number of issues. republican trent franks is resigned from congress after admitting he asked staff members about being a surrogate mother for his wife. and al franken is stepping down amid allegations of sexual

misconduct. franken called some of the claims against him not true. president trump hosted his first hanukkah reception. hundreds of people were there, but congressional democrats were not invited. those are some of our top stories on this friday, december 8th. from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning. we begin this half hour with the latest on the southern california wildfires. nearly 200,000 people have been forced to evacuate. 20,000 homes are under threat and at least 500 buildings have been destroyed. >> the latest fire erupted north of san diego, incinerating six square miles in just a few hours. those flames destroyed at least 20 homes and several people were burned when they couldn't escape fast enough. navy helicopters will be used this morning to try to fight the fire. and to the north, the huge fire in ventura county could burn until christmas. abc's matt gutman and marcus moore are there. >> reporter: these firefighters have actually lit this fire ear. it's called a backfire. the idea is to create a buffer

between the scorched earth behind my and the unburned fields below. they don't want it to burn that telephone pole. now what's incredible about this fire, the thomas fire, is that we're 25 miles away from ventura, from the ocean, and this fire has reached all the way there. it is a massive fire, one of so many burning right now in southern california. well over 180,000 people have been evacuated from their homes because of this fire. major routes like the 101 in ventura, the 405 in los angeles have been closed because of it, and now more fires are breaking out south of here in san diego. those fires right now are zero percent contained. and there are thousands of firefighters across this state battling these flames right now, it is an uphill battle almost literally. the problem is there is so much dry vegetation. there has been a major drought for many years here. and the rains that did come last winter only fed the underbrush which now has dried out and made excellent fuel for these massive

fires. matt gutman, abc news in santa paula, california. >> this is what's left of this bit of land here in ventura county where this fire moved through. and it's been burning for several days now, and here it is where it has destroyed a facility where they have heavy equipment and also containers here, right along the 101 freeway that for a time was actually shut down in both directions as this fire continued to spread and actually jumped across the highway. and it was also where firefighters were working hard to prevent those flames from getting to homes along the coast here. it was feverish work and firefighters say it is personal for them. there are firefighters who lost their own homes in this and yet they are still on the front lines trying to prevent those flames from spreading to other homes. and certainly, we have also seen residents doing what they can to aid in that effort, grabbing their own water hoses to knock out the flames that really continue to spread. but as you look here in ventura county, it's still smoldering. the smoke is still rising into the air and residents are hoping

for improved conditions and firefighters can get a handle on these fires that have scorched so much earth. in ventura county, marcus moore, abc news. >> our thanks on to matt gutman and marcus moore. and it appears that those crews won't be getting much help from the forecast. >> accuweather's melissa constanzer joins us with details. good morning. >> kendis, diane, we keep the santa ana winds as we head through your friday. they will weaken slightly. those wind gusts through the valleys will still be more than 30 miles per hour. so the fire danger remains high. in fact, we'll keep these dry, low humidity conditions right through the weekend. and high pressure, it will weaken just a touch as we go through saturday but possibly even strengthening into sunday. that means the fire danger remains elevated right as we go through into your sunday evening. so no change there in the fire weather. take you to the southeast, and a big concern for the day will be the rain/snow mix.

victims are and possibly even the shooter, we know the victims. >> it's in times like this that you feel violated because of the schools are set up. those are places where we accept our kids to be safe. >> reporter: the fbi will assist in the investigation, helping local authorities find out exactly what happened. maggie rulli, abc news, new york. the man brought in to replace fired fbi director james comey is defending the integrity of his agency. that's after president trump said the fbi's reputation was in tatters. christopher wray faced a barrage of questions over the hillary clinton e-mail investigation and from democrats urging him to stand up against a president bent on tarnishing the reputation of the fbi. wray told the lawmaker hes that there's no finer institution. >> the fbi that i see is tens of thousands of agents and analysts and staff working there tails off to keep americans safe from the next terrorist attack. >> wray was also questioned about the fbi agent dismissed from the russia investigation for allegedly sending anti-trump

president's declaration will intensify today after thousands of palestinians attend prayers at jerusalem's most sacred site. >> they were on the streets by the dozens of locations across the west bank yesterday. they clashed with israeli forces who fired water cannons and tear gas. abc's james longman was right there. >> reporter: we've been watching this back and forth between young men and security forces all day. caught in a tear gas used to disperse the crowds. the fear this time, people really thought that the peace process was dead, that these grow. >> abc's james longman for us, and the palestinians are calling their reaction to president trump's jerusalem announcement three days of rage. >> let's go right to abc's molly hunter in jerusalem. molly, joining us live now, giving yesterday's protests, what does this mean for today?

>> reporter: kenneth, diane, good morning. that's right. yesterday was day two of these apparently three days of rage. we were out there. pretty big protests. several thousand palestinian protesters clashing with the israeli military. but this is pretty widespread. even though each individual protest wasn't massive, they took place all across the west bank and in gaza. people were saying yesterday could be an indication of something much larger today. guys, the flashpoint we're watching for is the hours after friday prayers, which happens very shortly. kenneth and diane. >> and molly, if it's being called three days of rage, how is this expected to kul minute ate? >> reporter: i mean, today could be the turning point. we may find out today whether it fizzled out or whether it ramps up. the p.a. is under serious pressure to cut ties with the u.s. and walk away from any relationship with the u.s. and any relationship with the u.s.-brokered peace talks and we may find out more in the coming days. diane and kenneth. >> we are receiving reports that

palestinian officials refusing to meet with vice president pence when he arrives at the end of the month. what are you hearing? >> reporter: guys, that's right. so last night, one very senior official said the palestinians will not under any circumstances meet with mike pence. however, another palestinian official says that issue needs to to be discussed. but they both might be getting ahead of president abbas. nothing from his office yet. no confirmation, no comment. president abbas has, however, gone to the u.n. asking for support to reverse president trump's decision. and there will be a u.n. security council meeting later today. diane, kenneth. >> the declaration is done, but this isn't going to happen for quite some time, at least the moving of the embassy. so what are the hopes that there can be a middle ground of some sort. is there one? >> reporter: i think that's anyone's guess. i think his recognition was so vague, yes, the embassy is going to take months and months, probably years, actually. it's going to be incredibly expensive to build one of those embassies.

the embassy right now in tel aviv is a fortress. so to even find that land, hire the architect, figure out the security, this is a long, long process. if there's a middle ground, anyone's guess, guys. >> molly, as you've pointed out, obviously, from israeli officials and the prime minister, obviously positive and good thoughts that they've been talking about about president trump's announcement. as far as president trump and how he's been received in this news, what are we hearing about people saying about president trump specifically? >> reporter: look, i've covered the region for several years, guys. the anti-american sentiment at least here in the west bank in east jerusalem has been higher than it has been in the last couple years. and we actually heard reports the state department actually reached out to israel and said guys, please temper your reaction to this announcement. help us do damage control. help us hid head off and tamp down any violence across the region. they have beefed up security at embassies across the region. very worried that the anti-american sentiment could

flames. and they likely have at least several days to go with these strong winds expected through the weekend. so a tough battle ahead, especially for some of these firefighters on the front lines who have lost their own homes. kenneth and diane. >> it's so difficult to look at some of those images of entire communities up in flames. >> they've had a really tough week, tough weeks and months to come as well. the best way to get a sense of these wildfires is from above. >> let's at a a look at that perspective now from a helicopter pilot at kabc, our station in los angeles. these images are incredible. >> reporter: we're at the heel of the fire, nestled between the communities of fillmore and santa paula. we're looking at a hillside up in the mountains just above those communities that is on fire right thou. a very large section. communities down here are extremely worried about the winds. the winds are really starting to pick up at this hour, gusting to about 25 to 35 miles an hour hoping that it won't get much stronger than that. firefighters are worried about

the embers that will embed themselves in this smoking, go downrange in those communities, possibly setting off more spot fires. that's what they're scared of right here. right now we're keeping a close eye on it as the winds pick up in the ventura county area. those embers get embedded in the smoke and get carried and can be extremely dangerous. that's exactly what's happened with these fires. you'll see this big fire on a hillside and all of a sudden a hillside a mile or two away will start catching on fire, and the fire continues as it crowns from from mountaintop to another. >> you start looking at those images and you get an idea of how big they are and how much smoke is in the air now. that's a big concern. >> it really is. and you have to see it from that viewpoint to really get a sense of it. those winds are so forceful spreading smoke from the wildfires hundreds of miles north to the san francisco bay area, triggering spare the air warnings from now until sunday. >> so the question now is when will this wind let up. accuweather's melissa constanzer is joining us with answers on that.

to new legislation while the republicans want to deal with the issue separately. congressman trent franks says he will leave office next month amid allegations of sexual harassment. he announced his resignation admitting that while he and his wife struggled with infertility he discussed child surrogacy with two female staff members. franks said if in a statement he never physically intimidated any staff member or attempted to have any sexual contact with them, but regrets that he discussed surrogacy in the workplace and caused distress. franken's resignation comes after eight women accused him of sexual misconduct. still he remained defiant explaining he remembers incidents differently. abc's mary bruce asked republican senator cassidy if there's a double standard at work. >> no. franken didn't have to resign. there's clearly no due process. but when you have everybody coming after you, that's what he chose to do. but that's really up to franken and up to moore, not up to the

the thomas fire raging across ventura county, barrelling into the town of la conchita. firefighters battling a blizzard of embers and ash. you can see inside this ridge, the fire engulfing both sides of the canyon. we watched the fire line leap down this mountain. these helicopters are dropping as much water as they possibly can on these fields. the idea is to stop the fire from getting to this charred part of the mountain down there to those avocado fields and homes below. and we found anthony and rene sprinting back to their home. it was a scramble repeated thousands of times in california this week, rene ripping photos off the walls of her children's rooms, grabbing items by the drawerful and willing to accept any help in the dash to flee. why the wedding dress? of all the things. >> just start with our memories. we've been together, you know, since i was 19 and we've been through so much.

conversations with his father stemming from a meeting with a russian lawyer. but democrats say it doesn't apply. >> reporter: the white house is facing questions about why donald trump jr. is refusing to tell congress what he told his father after news broke about his controversial meeting in trump tower with a russian lawyer. trump jr. spent about eight hours before the house intelligence committee, answering questions about his june 2016 meeting. he had been told the russian lawyer had dirt on hillary clintenon as, quote, part of russia and its government support for mr. trump. trump jr. acknowledged discussing the matter with the president when the news broke over the summer, but he refused to describe that discussion, citing attorney-client privilege because he said lawyers for him and his father were also on the phone. the top democrat on the committee says that's bogus. >> in my view, there's no attorney-client privilege that protects a discussion between father and son.
