good evening. thanks for joining us. president trump hitting the road rallying die-hard republicans with an eye on that heated alabama senate race. roy moore is still denying claims of sexual misconduct from multiple women. many of whom say they were underage at the time. with each side accusing the other of lying will voters be swayed? >> reporter: in a campaign-style rally tonight, president trump touting his achievements in pensacola, florida. >> how are your 401(k)s doing, not too bad, right? vote for roy moore. >> reporter: president trump urging his base to vote for controversial senate candidate roy moore. >> the future of this country cannot afford to lose a seat in the very, very close united states. we can't afford it, folks. >> reporter: president trump's endorsement both at the rally and earlier on twitter comes despite eight women having accused moore of inappropriate

behavior, including sexual assault. these photos from the "washington post" showing some of the accusers around the time they say they encountered moore. many of moore's accusers say they were teenagers at the time, while he was in his 30s. moore vehemently denies the allegations. >> these allegations are completely false. they're malicious. specifically, i do not know any of these women, nor have i ever engaged in sexual misconduct with any woman. >> i think it's a huge mistake of the president to get involved in a race like this on behalf of somebody like roy moore. i think though he may win this one little battle, he's going to lose the war, which is he's going to tarnish his own brand and tarnish the brand of the republican party. >> reporter: leigh corfman says when she was only 14, a then 32-year-old moore took her to his home and touched her inappropriately. she spoke on the "today" show. >> he basically laid out blankets on the floor of his living room and proceeded to --

seduce me, i guess you would say. and during the course of that he removed my clothing. he left the room and came back in wearing his white underwear. and he touched me over my clothing, what was left of it. and he -- tried to get me to touch him as well. >> i was terrified. >> reporter: beverly young nelson also claims when she was 16, moore groped her and tried to force a sex act on her in his car. she sat down with our tom llamas. >> he was trug to pull me in between his legs. it was terrible. and i was bound and termed that i was not going to be raped by him. >> reporter: she first spoke publicly about what she says happened to her last month at a press conference with her powerhouse attorney, gloria allred. >> he said, you're just a child. and he said, i am the district attorney.

and if you tell anyone about this, no one will ever believe you. >> reporter: nelson says moore's supporters have called her a liar, even compared her to a criminal, since she first spoke out three weeks ago. >> that really hurt me, you know? god knows and roy knows and i know what happened. >> reporter: young's proof that she knew moore? her yearbook. she says moore signed it. moore and his supporters have called into question the inscription, noting the writing under the signature appears to be different. >> let's look at beverly nelson. everybody knows her yearbook is a forgery. >> reporter: nelson admits it was she and not moore who wrote the notes below the inscription, but she still insists that message and signature was all roy moore's. >> to be clear, he signed your yearbook? >> he did sign it. >> and you made some notes underneath? >> yes. >> reporter: today, nelson and her attorney underscore that the signature is authentic, offering evidence in a press conference from a handwriting expert. >> it demonstrates that when roy

moore stated "i do not know any of these women," that statement does not appear to be true. the signature and the handwritten notation above the signature were prepared by roy moore. >> reporter: hours later the moore campaign hitting back. >> release the yearbook so that an independent expert, not your paid expert, an independent expert, a neutral third party custodian, can take it and look at the ink. so that we can find out is the ink a month old? or is it 40 years old? the truth is out there, and until she releases the yearbook, all we know is they're not telling the truth. >> reporter: polling shows a tight race between roy moore and his democratic opponent doug jones. >> roy moore has never, ever served our state with honor. >> reporter: his campaign has been trying to capitalize on the accusations against moore. >> i think the race is within 2 or 3 points with a slight,

slight advantage to roy moore, the republican. but it's a race that doug jones still has the shot at winning in this race, depending on what the turnout is and how the voters fall. >> reporter: doug jones' team also seizing on this audio from a campaign event originally published in the "l.a. times" where moore made controversial comments about slavery. when asked when was the last time america was great? >> i think it was great in the time when families were united, even though we had slavery, they cared for one another. people were strong in the families. >> reporter: he did go on to praise all the progress the country has made on civil rights and prejudice. >> we've done a lot of things to bring this country around. and i think we can still make it better. >> reporter: moore's campaign telling abc news, of course the judge opposes slavery. >> he was going to lose the african-american vote overwhelmingly because of many of his stands on many different issues in the state. and the view of him by many voters, not just

african-americans but many voters, that he's a throwback candidate to a time that feels more like george wallace. >> reporter: despite everything, many of moore's supporters are sticking with him. >> this is right out of the playbook of dirty politics. >> i don't see how he could be guilty now and not guilty in all these other elections. >> i'm sure he's telling the truth. >> reporter: after initially spurning him, the republican national committee recently reversed course, sending resources and contributions to his campaign. >> we're not going anywhere. >> what do you think about the republicans that say they believe people like you, but they'd rather have a republican in that seat than a democrat? >> is the party more important, really, than what happened? i feel like my incident is being just swept under the rug, literally, because he's a republican. >> reporter: all of this comes in the midst of a roiling national debate about sexual misconduct. >> in the coming weeks, i will be resigning as member of the united states senate.

>> reporter: on thursday, al franken announced he'll resign after eight women came forward with accusations of sexual misconduct by the democratic senator from minnesota. >> i am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the oval office, and the man who has repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the senate with the full support of his party. >> reporter: the power of the "me too" movement, "time" magazine's person of the year, sweeping through some of washington's power corridors but leaving others unscathed. >> how do we reckon with that? and is that going to put pressure on roy moore? is franken going to become an example in alabama? i think it's too early to tell exactly, except for that this movement is moving so quickly. we didn't see a month ago that this was going to happen. >> reporter: this weekend both candidates crisscrossing the

those california wildfires

still raging tonight, spreading to new regions. and now threatening san diego. as hundreds of thousands of people evacuate their homes across the state. abc's matt gutman is on the ground getting a firsthand look at the unstoppable blaze. >> reporter: as six major wildfires continue to rage across southern california, scenes of horror played out from ventura to san diego. helicopters d s ferrying water flame retardant in an almost futile fight to contain these ferocious fires. you hear the snapping and crackling? >> there's not a whole lot we can do with this kind of activity. so we just get in a place to protect the structures and keep everybody to a safe distance and then we kind of come in after it's done and start putting stuff out as best we can. >> repter: y exploding in san diego. abc's rob marciano was there on the ground. >> we came up on the lilac fire, this is the first property we

saw, completely up in flames. some sort of structure next to a home just up the driveway. >> reporter: with santa an that winds gusting over 50 miles per hour, fueling those blazes. the trees next to it starting to light, embers being carried by this wind. you can see how spot fires can flare up. names tearing into neighborhoods forcing residents to run for their lives. at least four injured as they tried to flee the flames. >> the fire was coming right at us. within matters of minutes it had spread. you could feel the heat from the fire. the truck smells like smoke. so it was a very short time that we had. >> reporter: at this horse training facility, desperate trainers with no other options forced to let hundreds of horses flee with no time to lead them to safety. some of those horses stampeding, others did not survive. and one resident ducking for cover the moment a plane dropped fire retardant on his home,

surrounded by plumes of smoke. >> oh my god, oh my god! holy [ bleep ]! >> reporter: the fast-moving flames torching at least 4,100 acres in san diego, burning homes in neighborhood after neighborhood. officials reporting 0% of that fire contained. >> right in front of my house, the flames coming down the hill. it had jumped over the hill from south to north coming right at us. >> reporter: it has so far destroyed at least 400 structures. california governor jerry brown issuing a state of emergency in san diego county. officials issuing this dire warning today. >> it is possible that we could be dealing with the lilac fire and the high winds for some time to come. >> reporter: in so many neighborhoods in southern california, homes incinerated, only the cmneys left standing. the san diego county sheriff estimating that 10,000 people have been evacuated there, and an additional 20,000 are without power. >> we are in a situation and you feel like you're at risk, don't

wait for a mandatory evacuation notice. self-evacuate. get yourself out of there, get yourself out of harm's way. >> reporter: in some cases, the fires are so ferocious -- 50 yards away you can feel the incredible heat coming off this structure that is an inferno right now. there isn't much firefighters can do. >> right now it's just indefensible, it's too far gone. >> to the amateur eye it looks saveable, but you're saying no? >> no it's fully involved in the attic. >> now you're trying to defend the homes around it once this goes up? >> absolutely. >> once the fire's in the attic the captain tells me there's nothing they can do, this house is going up, it's a lost cause. up the coast in ventura, the first fatality. a 70-year-old woman found dead in her vehicle from a car crash along the evacuation route. earlier today in ventura, aerial showing the fire erupting as gusts of wind ripped through the hills. up here you get a sense of that powerful wind. and also the size of that part

of the thomas fire. it's turning the whole sky orange. the only way to reach it is by air, because this area is incredibly remote. planes deployed to the scene releasing thousands of gallons of flame retardant over the inferno. on thursday the thomas fire here in ventura crept closer to the 101 freeway and began to enter into the ferea beach community. >> mandatory evacuations, leave your homes now! >> reporter: firefighters doing anything to try to prevent this fire from spreading to other homes. there are over 3,200 first responders on the ground. the firefighting has become personal for some firefighters. >> firefighters have lost their home in the city of ventura that were on the fire. firefighters that lost their homes. >> reporter: some taking measures into their own hands. this woman using a garden hose to try and prevent the fire from crossing the streetoer house. >> that's your house? >> yes, that one. >> reporter: my colleague marcus moore was there. >> how long have you lived in

your house here? >> i live here for ten years. >> how worried are you? >> i am worried because the wind. i'm not worried about the fire. but i worry how strong the wind blow, the wind can blow, the strong fire, the ash. >> reporter: back in the hills of ventura county, those fires continue to burn out of control. you could see how massive that plume of smoke is. this thing towers into the sky thousands of feet up. but it's not all necessarily bad. what you're seeing here looks fears. but this is actually a good sign, say firefighters, because the fire is backing in on itself. most of this area has already burned and all their focus is on saving structures. for "nightline," i'm matt gutman in ventura, california. up next, it may look like santa's workshop, but this is not the north pole. inside china's christmas village.
