last night police captured kevin lin in southern california. >> police claim he was part of a plot to hold the girl for ransom. they abandoned their plans when they learned her parents were in taiwan. she was found safely in a hotel in sfo. a pedestrian died after being head by a vehicle in it san francisco tonight. it all happened late this afternoon at 19th avenue and qui quinntara street. police say the driver is cooperating. right now there ae six fires burning in southern california. so far they've burned 175,000 acres, the largest fire the thomas fire which is roughly the size of chicago. it has destroyed almost 800 structures. another 25,000 are in danger tonight. 90,000 people have been forced out of their homes. today the governor toured ventura county neighborhoods that were destroyed in the fire. >> what can you say? you lose your house and belongings, people lose their animals. it is a horror.

and it's a horror we want to minimize. when we can't minimize it, we want to recover from it as quickly as possible. >> this is usually wet season in southern california. but it's unseasonably dry. tonight the winds are picking up again. here's meteorologist frances dinglasan with more. >> we'll head down to southern california. in those areas where the fires are, we've got conditions that are moving at 21 miles per hour in santa clarita, 18 miles per hour close by. i'll show you the forecast animation over the next few hours. the winds pick up overnight, gusting close to 35, 40 miles an hour. it continues to remain gusty throughout the day and into the evening sunday. that's not great news. that coupled with very low humidity makes it very difficult for firefighters. here is the visible satellite image from this afternoon. you can see the smoke from those fires, and with high pressure and the clockwise flow of the air, it feeds right back into

the bay area, impacting our air quality. we do have another spare the air alert day tomorrow. i'll have details coming up. >> sounds good, thank you, frances. new video of horse owners saving their horses trapped in stalls by the fast moving fires. hundreds of them were saved. but about 30 to 40 of them died. the horsing community is rallying to support one another. annabelle nunez from our sister station in los angeles has the story. >> reporter: palm trees on fire at the san luis downs training center as workers try to rescue hundreds of horses in distress. >> there you go. easy. >> reporter: for some, the images too much to bear. >> i didn't want to watch. it was just -- it was too sad, too hard. but my heart goes out. we're horse people. we've been horse people all our lives. and i'm just so sad and happy to give and do what i can.

>> reporter: the devastation prompted people to fill up advance with donations headed to san diego county. >> we brought t-shirts, jackets, some pants. >> reporter: this hits close to home. >> it's been absolutely heartbreaking. it's been hard to watch. what is so comfortable is to see the way the horse men's communities has come together to help. >> reporter: jill atkinson's friend was injured trying to save her horses. >> they had six horses, three of them died. she was airlifted, after trying to save her horses. >> reporter: a gofundme account has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help victims recover. >> the loss of lives of the horses, and what i don't think a lot of people understand is that the grooms that live at the barnes lost their homes. >> reporter: we watched a steady stream of people wanting to help. dropping off bags of clothes and water, there to let victims know they're not alone. >> they help me every day, the

man opened fire at the school in connecticut in 2012. new details about a terrifying bus crash in san francisco last night that sent 29 passengers to the hospital. one of them is talking to abc 7 news about the frightening moments when that bus flipped over on highway 101. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard is at san francisco general hospital with more. >> these moments, you never understand what is happening. >> reporter: marco zorsi was just released from the hospital with a bad head wound. >> we were dancing on the road and fell on one side. then i forgot everything. >> reporter: he says the bus was taking a group from san francisco to palo alto for a holiday party. but at hospital curve, the bus started fish tailing, hit the center divider and bounced back across four lanes. the bus flipped over? >> on my side. i was very lucky. >> reporter: lucky indeed.

he escaped the bus. all 29 passengers and the driver were taken to local hospitals. >> the driver was not impaired at the time of the collision. >> reporter: the chp towed the wrecked bus to this evidence yard where it will be inspected for possible mechanical failure. >> we'll look at everything we've got, including any sort of driver input or speed, if you will, that may have caused this. >> reporter: how fast was the bus going, do you know? >> no, because we were so -- there was a great mood, we were talking to each other. so, you know, nobody was careful to what was happening. >> reporter: the california public utilities commission which oversees charter buses shows the company is licensed and insured. we reached out to charter brothers for comment but have not heard back. in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. a strike by 3,000 oakland city workers is in its 50 day. in a statement, the union

requested a mutually agreeable mediator. because of the strike, libraries and rec centers are closed and streets are not getting cleaned. we've heard from some people that garbage is starting to pile up. millions across the southern and northeastern united states are dealing with record amounts of snow, power outages, and flight delays. in georgia, one person has died. reporter kim hutcherson with more. >> reporter: some 70 million people are under a winter storm warning, watch, or advisory in the northeast on saturday. pair that with record amounts of snow in the south. people in the northeast are preparing for what's headed their way. >> i bought a snow blower and i'm waiting for it to be delivered on monday between 9:00 and 1:00. i'm too old to shovel snow. >> i'm sure you have fresh gas for your snowblower, turn it on, check it out, run it. >> how much we're going to get, we're not sure. we're waiting. >> reporter: whiteout conditions in the south left hundreds of thousands of people across the region without power.

and black ice caused accidents like this one. the pileup in san antonio had emergency officials climbing through the wreckage to get drivers out of at least 15 cars. one woman in north carolina was trying to get to a doctor's appointment when slippery conditions ruined it. >> i didn't want to make the news. i just want to make my neuroappointment at 11:00. >> reporter: officials are reminding people to slow down in winter weather and take your time. i'm kitchen hutcherson, abc 7 news. firefighters have to be on their toes to stay ahead of the quickly moving flames. >> it's good news they have eyes in the sky. how drones are helping firefighters stay one step ahead. and a reaso

some of the military's new technology is helping fight wildfires for the first time in california. air national guard drones like this give fire officials another set of eyes in the sky. the drones hover twice as high as most helicopters. and special sensors can see through the smoke and deliver live video feeds to commanders on the ground. >> we can show them where the fire is moving. whether it be north, south, east, west. or if embers start flying four and five miles away, they have literally realtime data and they can start taking their limited resources and put them where it counts most.

>> because those drones are operated by pilots on the ground, the aircraft can hover over fires for more hours than manned aircraft can. dozens of north bay families have new happier memories just two months after losing their homes in the october wildfires. several photographers snapped family portraits for fire survivors at the luther burbank home and gardens. each family received the photos for free while photographers and other volunteers volunteered their time. >> we want to be able to reach back into the community and say here are some portraits for you to put on your wall when you rebuild your home. >> looking at ahead. each of the families will receive an 11x14 inch canvas of the portrait along with a thumb drive containing their new photos. it's a holiday celebration with the usual suspects. >> there's santa claus, storm troopers, and, umm -- >> you said storm troopers? >> i think so. >> i don't normally think of those in the name is sentence. it's all to make sick kids'

christmas came early for some bay area children in the south bay. >> abc 7 news was at mineta san jose international airport. >> besides fun and games, there were friends as well and a visit from santa. you can see he arrives not on a sleigh but on a police helicopter. >> you try to tell them what the day is going to be like. there's no words to describe from the time they get to juniper networks in sunnyvale to the motorcade here, all that they're going to see, and when santa come in on air 2, that just pretty much tops it off. >> about 50 children were at today's event. it takes about 200 volunteers, though, to pull it all off. >> announcer: now your accuweather forecast from abc 7 news. good evening, i'm meteorologist frances dinglasan. get ready for a chilly night

again. we'll start you off with live doppler 7 and the satellite image. some cloud covering starting to move east. but we'll have some cold temperatures coming up. here's a live shot from the east bay hills looking out towards the bay bridge and san francisco. temperatures are dropping. right now it is 60 in san francisco, mountain view 56, san jose 57, gilroy 58, half moon bay the mild spot at 63 degrees. and this time from sutro, we're looking down towards san francisco. lots of events tonight and tomorrow. and it's already down in the 40s in santa rosa. 49 degrees. also fairfield, down to 46 right now. concord and livermore in the mid- to low 50s. here is a pretty live shot of the embarcadero buildings lit up for the holidays. we can expect poor air quality to continue tomorrow. we have chilly and cold temperatures overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. and then dry and mild through next week. no rain in sight. and i'll show you the forecast

animation with that as well. here is a live shot in san jose. so tomorrow's another spare the air day. no wood burning allowed. and the air quality is actually going to be poor, not only in the north bay but also along the coast and central bay. moderate air quality elsewhere. monday it looks like it will be moderate for everyone. things could change. that high presure giving us these conditions isn't going anywhere. the lows tonight are going to be pretty cold, especially in the north bay valleys. look at santa rosa, 30 degrees, below freezing. some low 30s through lakeport, napa, 40s around the bay. 45 in oakland and san mateo. san jose, 39 degrees. if you have early morning activities tomorrow, definitely have an extra layer if you're going out for a walk or early morning jog. it's going to be cold in the inland areas. and then by lunch time we'll see those hazy conditions as spare the air conditions. then sunset at 4:51. notice temperatures are going to be above average by about five

to ten degrees. but right after sunset, things cool down pretty quickly. if you're going out tomorrow night as well, it will be another cold one. highs mainly in the 60s for most everyone. san francisco, 65, as well as oakland. san jose warmer at 70 degrees. and we'll see lots of mid-60s through santa rose is a, napa 65 degrees. high pressure is going to stick around, not going anywhere. the forecast animation shows dry conditions for the next 14 days. in fact it's looking dry through christmas right now. so that's not great news. we are going to be behind in rainfall. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. we have a spare the air day tomorr tomorrow. above average warmth continues, plenty of sunshine holding steady for the whole seven days. the 83rd heisman trophy handed out today in new york with three finalists including two quarterbacks and a running back. qb mayfield from oklahoma,
