news.com for more information on how to register. there's optimism today for a possible end to the ongoing strike by oakland city workers which is now in its sixth day. both sides have agreed to bargaining talks with a state mediator starting monday. cornell bernard is live in oakland with details. cornell? >> reporter: eric, cautious optimism for sure, the places like this main library branch will reopen soon. where and when that mediation session will happen has not been determined. meantime, the strike goes on. >> striking city workers picketed outside oakland's main library branch, forced to close along with dozens of other city facilities. library worker lena hernandez is hurting without a paycheck. >> i paid bills and just watching my check account getting lower and lower. >> reporter: seiu local 1021 and the city have agreed to mediation with a mutual third party from the state after the mayor declared an impasse to bargaining talks on friday.

>> it's a small showing by the city that they are having to compromise that we were able to agree to a mediator and go to mediation. i'm cautious because the city has been bargaining in bad faith for eight months. >> if we don't get no contract, you don't get no peace. >> reporter: 3,000 city workers walked off the job last tuesday and hit the picket line over pay and working conditions. mayor libby schaaf told abc 7 morning's anchor carolyn tyler she's hopeful for a resolution. >> we want our workers back at work and we want to settle our differences because we just deeply respect our workers and really want to continue serving the public. >> reporter: but both sides are still far apart on pay. the union is asking for two 4% raises, the first and second year of the contract. the city agrees to the first raise but says the second increase must be based on revenue. >> we can't spend money that we don't have. >> the mayor has pointed out on a number of programs how robust the oakland economy is. >> reporter: ripple effects from the strike are being seen and

appear in court tomorrow to answer kidnapping charges that date back more than 20 years. take a look. this is kevin lynn. hillsboro police captured lynn in los angeles on friday. abc 7 news was at sfo when lynn arrived in police custody this morning. detectives believe lynn and two others kidnapped nine-year-old chris chin chu and held her for ransom in 1995. she was found safe nine hours after being abducted. her kidnappers changed their minds, apparently, after learning chu's wealthy parents were in taiwan. >> on tuesday, an election in the state of alabama will have national implications, however its potential effects have been overshadowed by sexual misconduct allegations against the republican candidate involving underaged girls. abc news reporter stephanie ramos has the latest from birmingham. >> reporter: in just two days, republican roy moore faces democrat doug jones in alabama's cliffhanger election for u.s. senate. all eyes are on the race since eight women accused moore of

the salvation army needs help to keep a holiday tradition going this year. you know that sound, the charity bell is short of bell ringers, especially in the east bay. right now the salvation army needs to staff 32 kettles across alameda county but they're only getting ten volunteers to ring bell and encourage people to
