welcome back here 5:00 a.m. we have reports of an explosion at the port authority in times square, the bus terminal there. i want to show you these live images just coming in from new york city. you can see a far away look there at the times square and a map here of the area being monitored. i think that just swi 7:00. don't forget that today is a spare the air day. wood burning ban all the way up until midnight. here's sue. we have a sig alert in the sonoma/napa area. we'll get right to it. we had some sig alarms. it looks like they may have gotten out there and fixed that. both directions of 37 and especially westbound. cars were actually driving around those, and that's a bad idea. so smart train was sent out there to see if they could repair. we'll check back. it looks like the roadway is clear. you will find slowing in the westbound direction through skaggs island and heading to 21. we'll update in a couple of minutes.

another update here from our live desk. another story i'm watching closely, those fires in southern california. a lot of firefighters there exhausted in the bay area responding and are head to go the thomas fire in santa barbara county where three san mateo county fire engine strike teams had been deployed and the thomas fire this morning now at 230,000 acres. it is now the fifth largest wildfire in state history and flames are going through the vegetation there that hasn't burned in 100 years near carpinteria. residents have been ordered to evacuate. >> we literally jumped into our clothes, grabbed our son. i grabbed some pictures. but because i was doing that, i put my phone down and we just literally ran out the door. >> the thomas fire right now the only major blaze still really causing a concern this morning. the other wildfires in the state are at least 75% contained.

but the containment figures for the thomas fire have actually dropped. they went from 15% to 10%. we're watching that closely. in the east bay optimism for a possible end to the ongoing strike by oakland city workers now in its seventh day. both sides agreed to bargaining talks with the state mediator after the mayor declared an impasse on friday. the two sides are still pretty far apart on money. meantime ripple effects from the strike are being seen and smelled. trash from nearby homeless encampments piling up. city cleanup crews are off the job. the home garbage service should continue. an outside contractor handles that. it's 5:03 now. the man police pulled a little girl into a van and tried to extort hundreds of thousands of dollars from her parents will finally appear in court today. >> this happened in hillsborough more than two decades ago. abc news reporter matt keller joins us with that. kevin lin is being held on

$5 million bail in redwood city. abc 7 news was at sfo early sunday morning as lin arrived in police custody. he was arrested in southern california. lin was wanted for the 1995 kidnapping of kristine chiu, the 9-year-old was walking home from school when lin and two other men pulled her into a van. >> it was very scary. it's an unusual thing that would happen here in this neighborhood for sure. it's usually quiet. nothing like that happens. >> reporter: the kidnappers tried to extort money from her father but dropped the plan when they learned her parents were in taiwan. they left her unharmed in a hotel near sfo. lin is now the second of three suspects to face charges. one man was convicted of the kidnapping 20 years ago. a third is still on the run. matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. happening today the san francisco police department will be holding a community meeting to discuss the recent fatal officer involved shooting in the

bayview district. the mother of the man shot and killed by police has hired prominent civil rights attorney john burris. that shooting happened december 1st. police say o'neil carjacked a van, led police officers on a pursuit, he slowed the van, jumped out and ran toward a marked sfpd vehicle. the officer who shot o'neil was days out of the academy. >> it's 5:05 now. police in oakland are on the lookout for a driver who hit a woman in her 60s and then took off. it happened near 14th street and broadway. they say the woman was crossing the street. no one got a good look at the driver. one witness described the car as a dark four-door sedan. crimestoppers is offering $10,000 to help find the suspect. happening today a unique climate change lawsuit will be heard in san francisco. the suit has been filed by attorneys on behalf of children.

they're arcing the government should be protecting the kids instead of putting their future at risk because of climate change. the hearing to determine whether the lawsuit should be allowed to move forward. if it does it could force the government to find a way to reduce greenhouse gases with a detailed plan. governor jerry brown is heading to paris for a big climate change summit. he is supposed to deliver the keynote speech tomorrow, the second anniversary of the paris agreement. the climate accord signed by nearly 200 nations. you may recall president trump announced he planned to pull the united states out of that deal. an east bay woman who sank her life savings into floating retirement home is now watching it sink into the san leandro marina. eric thomas shows us the damage and why firefighters are getting involved. >> when i got here my heart dropped. >> reporter: debbie has only

degrees above average on this winter spare the air day. i want to get you an update on the breaking news out of new york city. a possible pipe bomb detonated in a passageway below ground att port authority. these are live images coming in. a wide look, you can see far away from times square a lot of police out there. and here's a closer look at the activity that is happening there in front of those bus terminals at the port authority. they have one person in custody, only a few injuries being reported and police have reportedly have video and are confident this is contained according to abc news. you can see there's still a lot of activity out there as they try to figure out what the plan was here if that indeed was a pipe bomb and they're trying to evacuate everyone out of times square right now making sure commuters are not going into

hi, everyone. i want to get you the latest on the breaking news we're watching out of new york city's times square after a possible pipe bomb was detonate d at a bus terminal. these live images and all that police activity happening now. we just learned president trump has been briefed on the situation. that is the very latest. if you are just joining us, this explosion happened within the last hour in the heart of manhattan. you can see how many police are out there. we know at least one person was hurt, and we also know one suspect is reportedly in police custody, but so far we do not have a description of that suspect and no motive quite yet. they do reportedly have a situation under control. you can see a lot of police out there right now trying to get everyone evacuated from the popular times square area and there are no public transit going into the area.

right now but we want to go to gio benitez who is on the scene. gio? >> reporter: george, i want to you look at this right now. you have all of these officers here. you have all of these ambulances and fire trucks. the bomb squad is here on the scene. no doubt so many people are here. it is truly a miracle only one injured. so many people come in for the buses and the subway system. they were evacuating the major subway lines here in new york city. now the working theory right now, the suspicion is this pipe bomb apparently could have detonated earlier than intended because it was under ground going through this passageway where not too many people were. that's the good news. this could have been worse if it detonated where it was supposed to. that's just a suspicion, just

something they're working on, george, trying to confirm. so many people in the area right now, police say this seems to be contained. >> the information is just coming in the suspect, what we know about the suspect, the suspect from bangladesh has been in the country about seven years, was living in brooklyn apparently wearing the pipe bomb on his person. gio seemed to indicate a little prematurely. a lot more to be learned. i want to go to our senior justice correspondent pierre thomas for more on that. anyone claiming responsibility? any other information coming in to federal officials? >> no one has claimed responsibility, george. i can tell you the attorney general, homeland security officials, top law enforcement in the country have been briefed awaiting additional information. there has been great concern with the upcoming holiday season. two officials i spoke to were just so thankful it appears to be contained with limited injuries, george. this has major implications for the upcoming holiday season.

report. i want to go over the latest information we have as we have been tracking this throughout the morning. i also want to show you the live images coming in. they have at least one male suspect in police custody and he was injured. we just learned seconds ago that speck was from bangladesh and had been living in the u.s. for about seven years and did have a pipe bomb on his person. apart from that police are now saying there were no other injuries so that is a bit of good news considering, and these are images from new york that i've been watching all morning long and i can tell you, you see some cars starting to come through the area but for the most part that area has been evacuated throughout the morning and we have seen a ton of people just trying to get out of that area, times square, where so many tourists are
