6:00 a.m. and we continue following that breaking news out of new york city's times square. you just heard that special report. i want to go over the latest information we have as we have been tracking this throughout the morning. i also want to show you the live images coming in. they have at least one male suspect in police custody and he was injured. we just learned seconds ago that speck was from bangladesh and had been living in the u.s. for about seven years and did have a pipe bomb on his person. apart from that police are now saying there were no other injuries so that is a bit of good news considering, and these are images from new york that i've been watching all morning long and i can tell you, you see some cars starting to come through the area but for the most part that area has been evacuated throughout the morning and we have seen a ton of people just trying to get out of that area, times square, where so many tourists are consistently

westbound all the way to san francisco including this backup here, about a 45-minute drive. down near sears point, those have been fixed. signal lights continue to flash red so traffic is bumper to red so traffic is bumper to bumper there. you can see by our green sensors all the way across. guys? i want to show you other live images coming in. this is the thomas fire in ventura county still burning this morning. it's now the fifth largest wildfire in california history. that is larger than the size of new york city.

near carpinteria, they have been evacuated. an additional 30,000 more told to prepare to leave. >> this fire has acted in an unpredictable manner, it is rapidly moving and will be a multiday event. please do what you can now to prepare to evacuate. >> over 1,000 structures have been destroyed and one more quick note that officials saying this morning they have canceled their final exams. they'll only be having those next year. >> developing news in the east bay. there is optimism for a possible end to the ongoing strike by oakland city workers going into its seventh day. both sides have agreed to bargaining talks after the mayor

declared an impasse on friday. the two sides are pretty far apart when it comes to money. ripple effects are being seen and smelled. trash piling up on several downtown streets because city cleanup crews are off the job. the mayor says people's home garbage service should continue as an outside contractor handles that. >> the man police believe pulled a little girl into a van and tried to extort hundreds of thousands from her parents will finally appear in court today. >> this happened decades ago. matt keller live for us tracking the case. >> reporter: kevin lin is scheduled to be in court for the first time after arriving over the weekend. abc 7 news was at sfo as lin arrived in police custody. he was arrested in southern california lin was wanted for the 1995 kidnapping of kristine chiu. police say the 9-year-old was walking home when lin and two

other men pulled her into a van. the kidnappers tried to extort money from her father but dropped the plan when they learned they were in taiwan. they left her unharmed in a hotel near sfo. >> they moved soon after the incident. they were not here very long. as an outcome of this, there's always a police presence now at drop-off and pickup at school from then on. >> reporter: lin is being held on $5 million bail in redwood city. he's now the second of the three suspects to face charges. one man was convicted 20 years ago. a third is still on the run. matt keller, abc 7 news. the san francisco police department is going to be holding a community meeting to discuss that recent officer involved shooting. according to "the examiner" the mother of the man shot and killed by police has hired civil rights attorney john burris.

they say o'neil carjacked a van and led officers on a pursuit through the bayview. they say he slowed the van, jumped out and ran toward a marked sfpd vehicle. the officer who shot him was just days out of the police academy. police say the officer turned his camera on after the shooting. police in oakland are on the lookout for a driver who hit a woman in her 60s and then took off. it happened yesterday near 14th and broadway. police say the woman was crossing the street at the time. one witness described the car as a dark four-door sedan. the victim did die from her injuries. governor jerry brown heading to paris for a big climate change summit. the climate accord has been signed by nearly 200 nations. you may recall president trump

hard to believe we're just a few degrees warmer than we were yesterday everywhere except napa where it's six degrees cooler. look at these temperatures, 35 right now in campbell. we're about 41 in san jose. in the hills about 54. other areas it's freezing cold in danville, fairfield, also novato. look at san pablo, 50. san francisco, 50. half moon bay, 64.

here is a look from our roof camera. you can see small waves on the bay today. watch out for the fog if you're running errands in the north bay this morning. sue has some ways to get around the morning commute. >> an earlier sig alert. so let's update that. let's go to the richmond/san rafael bridge. a couple cars stacked up to pay tolls. the left-hand side are cash lanes. let's look at what's going on. an earlier problem with railroad arms down, stuck down near sears point. smart train officials got out and fixed that. we still have blinking red lights westbound. so that's causing that slow stretch there. i do see some improvement, however, big, long stretch of slow and go traffic. so look at the bridge, not bad at all. you saw the toll plaza looking much better. we'll come back and take a look at an accident here westbound 4

in just a couple of minutes. thank you, sue. speaking of traffic, something commuters may want to keep in mind this morning according to the transportation county of marin, the three worst traffic areas in the county. sir francis drake boulevard, red hill avenue and tiburon boulevard between highway 101 and strawberry. so here is what's being done to help ease the congestion. a third traffic lane expected to open next year and there are improvements being made to the main street on ramp from the san quentin area. a big moment for women who have accused president trump of sexual misconduct. what we're expecting in the next few hours. a new warning

it's 6:14. happening today women who have publicly accused president trump of sexual harassment and assault will unite for the first time. at 7:30 this morning the women will share their experiences at a news conference in new york city hosted by brave new films. it released a film about the allegations last month. the women are expected to call for accountability and an investigation by congress of sexual misconduct by the president. he has so far denied the

reports. also today president trump's former campaign manager paul manafort and business associate rick gates are due in court for a status hearing. the two men charged with tax evasion, money laundering and failure to disclose lobbying for foreign agents. by the end of the day robert mueller's new team will have handed over to manafort's and gates' attorneys 400,000 items of evidence in its case against them. happening today history will be made in the news business. this woman will be the first afro-latina to anchor a news desk on a major network. imagine you are chosen to be on the wildly popular show "property brothers" to find out it wasn't the case. someone was just trying to get your money. that's what happened to a couple. lisa posted a message on the facebook page saying she needed help updating her home. she got a message from someone claiming to work for the property brothers. while the contract looked

official there were red flags. there were obvious grammatically errors and messages for money up front got more urgent. they never sent any money. they say they feel heartbroken but they're not flat broke. they don't want this to happen to anyone else. san francisco could be seeing lots of green when recreational marijuana becomes legal next month. a report says pot sales might triple and could total $240 million a year. san francisco is considering a measure that would put taxing medical marijuana. they have to pay a sales tax. and here is a reason you might be glad you live here in the bay area. lake-effect snow falling from indiana to new york. more than 100 million americans are feeling this winter blast. the system created some whiteout conditions in buffalo. just look at what the game looked like against the colts yesterday. 2 inches of snow fell each other. why are you so excited? >> this looks incredible.

let's talk about back here at home. we have our own issues. the first one you can see freezing cold temperatures to record highs today and it's a spare the air day. extremely dry air means cold tonight and the rain season is stuck in neutral. temperatures in the 70s. san jose, look at that, 73 in santa cruz. half moon bay, 70 along with ukiah. 64 to 69 for the rest of us and still no burning up until midnight. temperatures are going to drop into the 30s in our inland valleys in palo alto and morgan hill. low to mid-40s around the bay and then upper 40s to about 50 in half moon bay. let's go through my accuweather seven-day forecast and show you the dramatic changes that are not there. we are in the mid to upper 60s monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, and then low to upper 60s friday and then low to mid-60s saturday and sunday. sue, you have a new accident? >> yes, unfortunately, we

mentioned this just a bit ago. it is westbound highway 4. first the chp listed it in the eastbound direction which is the reverse commute. now they're saying it is westbound 4 near loveridge and traffic is stacked back up into pittsburg. no real good alternate for you. earlier a problem with a car and a big rig that merged together. never a good thing from 205 on to the 580 west and that is now clogging things as you make your way up and over the altamont pass. pleasanton over an hour. highway 4 at loveridge. antioch to concord just under 30 minutes. if your travels take from you san rafael into san francisco not bad at all, under 20 minutes. hi, everyone. a quick update from new york city and that breaking news, a bomb exploded at the nation's busiest bus terminal this morning in times square and we have just learned at least four

this is a fire in sunnyvale overnight. fire at a home on pyrus way. we have heard the family inside the house made it out okay. the garage was damaged. firefighters were able to rescue a dog from inside. no one was hurt and the cause is under investigation right now. here's a story i'm watching from our live desk, the fires raging in southern california and three strike teams have been redeployed out there to the 233,000 acre thomas fire that's burning in ventura county. about 5,000 people in santa barbara county near carpinteria, about 30,000 more have been told to prepare to leave and a lot of residents returning to those burned out homes are trying to cope with their loss.

mainly sunny. my accuweather, fog in the north bay and still no soaking storm on the way. let's talk about the warmest temperatures, 73 in santa cruz. san jose, 71. not a record high. it had to be 74. half moon bay, 70. ukiah, 70. 78 in redwood city to 69 in napa. those are some of the extremes there and napa could be a record high, 66 in san francisco. oakland, 65. tonight you can see the 30s and 40s out there once again. here we go through december 26th we have a 40% chance of being drier than normal . i don't see a storm system anywhere close to us. look at the snowpack. only 40% of average. it's only 7% of average in tahoe. that is just unbelievable. temperatures 64 to 68 through thursday with mostly sunny conditions. 62 to 68 friday. 60 to 66 saturday and sunday. no good news there.

hopefully you have a good update on the accidents in the south bay? let's go first to san jose, thanks, mike. this is 101. headlights bumper to bumper. that's the over crossing. what's happening here? take a look at our maps. a lot of slow traffic. reports of an accident southbound 101 near de la cruz. this is northbound 101. you can see all the slow traffic we saw on our live shot at the 880/101 junction. yes, a lane of traffic is blocked here. it is, in fact, northbound after brokaw, a solid line of traffic as you head up from south san jose. westbound 24 acalanes, a lane blocked. more slow traffic approaching the caldecott tunnel. mass transit, a great way to go. mike's been telling us about spare the air all morning this morning so you can take mass transit to avoid getting in your car. 61 b.a.r.t. trains on time. ace trains -- one landed on time already. 3 and 5 are on schedule.
