allegations are false. >> reporter: while on capitol hill, five democratic senators now calling for president trump to resign. >> president trump should resign. these allegations are credible. they are numerous. >> reporter: the white house calls the claims from the women false accusations and says that that there are eyewitnesses who dispute them. i push the white house for a list of these eyewitnesses. they pointed me to two tabloid stories from last year. one quotes a man who says he was on that flight decades ago. he disputes the president's claim that the president groped her. a second, a teen contestant who was not at the pageant in question. cecelia vega, the white house. and sexual misconduct allegations have forced a fame chef away from his so "the chew."

good morning, i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. good morning, i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. here are the top stories on this tuesday morning on "world news now." the would-be suicide bomber who injured himself and five others with a pipe bomb inside a new york subway system is telling authorities he was inspired by isis. we'll have a report straight ahead. voters in alabama will choose their next senator today, it will be either democrat doug jones or republican roy moore. both called on their voters to get to the polls. at their final campaign events last night. we have full details coming up. dozens are gathering in paris for the start of a climate change summit. president trump, of course, will not be there. he wasn't invited, thanks to the withdrawal from the paris climate agreement. and the jewish holiday of hanukkah begins at sundown.

to kcommemorate a miracle mirace b.c. those are some of our top stories on this tuesday, december 12th. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> 165 b.c. >> watching "full house". >> so, they've held on to that memory for several, several years as we say happy hanukkah to many. but we're going to start in new york city with the terror attack in the heart of new york city. >> it happened in a pedestrian tunnel in time's square. the bomber is an immigrant from bangladesh who told police he was inspired by isis from propaganda videos he'd seen online. abc's gio benitez has it's latest. >> reporter: this is the moment surveillance footage captured a man detonating a homemade

pipe bomb strapped to his body. here from another angle, the suspect circled by unsuspected commuters. then suddenly an explosion, a cloud of smoke. the crowd disburses, injuring five. stale live still alive and so was edge around him. >> thank god the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goal. >> reporter: the attack striking the heart of new york city in the middle of rush hour. a law enforcement source tells abc news the suspect had been on the train for some time, the bomb strapped to him the whole time, riding from brooklyn to manhattan. >> inside the subway, they're evacuating at this time. >> reporter: police responding to a reported explosion near times square in a jam-packed underground tunnel beneath the port authority bus tunnel. these four police officers approached the suspect still on the ground, identifying the man

as auyayed ullah. it was at the hospital where he told officials he was inspired by isis propaganda and built the makeshift bomb in his brooklyn apartment. he's believed to have acted alone. yooeb according to a law enforcement source, the bomb was built from a pipe about 12 inches in length with black powder and rigged with a 9 volt battery and a wire that came from a christmas light. the assumption is he had been prepared to die a suicide bomber. in the immediate aftermath, commuters quickly evacuated. >> police were all behind them saying "everybody out of the building, everybody out of the building." >> reporter: christina was in that building, saw the explosion and safely ran from it. what's going through your mind right now? you see all this going on, this is where you work. >> if i didn't believe in no god, i believe in god today.

>> reporter: the nypd outfitted with assault rifles locking down the scene, checking for other devices. beyond that point is where the pipe-bomb detonated. bomb-sniffing dogs brought in, choppers roared overhead, while in brooklyn, the fbi searching three different homes in the area thought to be connected to the suspect. his family inside, neighbors stunned. and we just got a statement from the family through a spokesperson. it says this. we are heartbroken by the violence and allegations, and they add we have confidence that the justice system will find the truth behind this attack. gio benitez, abc news, new york. >> and investigators have managed to track the suspect's movements from his apartment in brooklyn to the moment of that blast inside the subway. >> and they're also learning more about the type of bomb that he built. abc's pierre thomas is in washington with the latest. pierre, good morning. >> diane and kendis, according to a law enforcement source, the

bomb did not act as intended. there were nails and other things stufled in the pipe. it had the ability to cause more injuries than it did. the pipe did not fully shatter. a six-inch piece was discovered entirely in tact. the fbi right now has roughly 1,000 isis-related terror case under way in all 50 states. but the chilling question, are there other suspects out there like this young man with no criminal history and not on the government's terrorism radar? diane, kendis? >> some people fear looking at what may have happened before that incident. president trump used the attack to renew his call for immigration reform. the bombing suspect was here in the united states legally. bangladesh, by the way, his home country, is not on the travel ban list. but a statement from the u.s. president says the u.s. immigration system allows too many dangerous people have access to the united states. trump has voiced his support to end a policy called chain migration.

that's a policy that allowed the alleged bomber to be in the u.s. the polls open in alabama in just a few hours to decide on the state's next u.s. senator. roy moore said if voters don't believe in his character they shouldn't vote for him. he also lashed out at the women accusing him of sexual misconduct when they were teenagers. he questions the timing of those claims. democrat doug jones told his supporters it's time to say enough is enough. jones also said today's voting is a chance for alabama to put itself on the right path after what he called a long history of bad choices. southern california's largest wildfire is still growing after more than a week, moving into santa barbara county. most of the nearly 900 structures that have been destroyed were single family homes. and thousands were spending the night in shelters. abc's danya bacchus reports for us. >> reporter: for a week the thomas fire has burned ferociously and continues to show no signs of letting up. now the fifth-largest wildfire

in california history, charring more than 350 square miles, an area larger than new york city. >> my neighbor pounded on my door at 3:00 in the morning. debbie, get out! debbie, pack your stuff, get out. >> reporter: the fire pushing its way into santa barbara county, prompting evacuations for more than 30,000 residents. among them, actor rob lowe. >> pray for the people. hope everybody gets outside. >> reporter: this time lapse video showing a plume of smoke rising in just 30 minutes. nearly 800 structures there have been destroyed, with 18,000 still at risk. some residents returning home to find nothing is left. >> oh, my god. oh, my god. >> reporter: monday there's now some hope for the rest of southern california. crews have gained the upper hand on the other fires but as the smoke clears the devastation remains. >> i'm heartbroken, but we're thankful that we're alive.

and that's the most important thing. >> reporter: the reason it's been so tough to fight the thomas fire is because officials say it is burning in areas that have never burned in recorded history. the state has spent more than $34 million to suppress that fire. dania baucus abc, los angeles. and transgender people will again be allowed to enlist in the military come january. a federal court has denied the trump administration's emergency stay that would have allowed the ban on enlistment to stay in place. the white house plans to appeal that decision. meanwhile, the pentagon says it is preparing to allow new transgender troops to join new year's day. basketball hall-of-famer dennis rodman is returning to his role as diplomat. rodman is arranging a basketball game. his plan comes two months after the north promised to fire a salvo of missiles around guam. north korean officials would have to give the okay. but the people of guam like the idea.

russian president vladimir putin has declared victory in syria. putin announced a partial withdrawal of troops during a surprise visit to that country. he visited egypt and turkey and called president trump's jerusalem decision counter productive. putin is also the star of a new calendar. >> oh, yes. what better way to count the days down in 2018 than with vladimir putin hanging out on your wall. the putin calendar has 12 shots of the russian leader at various events. >> you'll get him lighting candles in a monastery. in february him playing hockey. each picture reportedly has thoughts from putin himself. >> i would read those thoughts for you, but they're in russian. >> i think i've found your christmas gift. >> look at that, putin smiling. the problem, though, with the calendar, we do have to point out there are no shirtless putin

this morning about something we probably all have in our homes. window blind cords. >> yeah, new research shows two children are hurt by those cords every day and researchers now calling for a ban. here's abc's serena marshall. >> reporter: the dangers posed to some children with window blinds has been an issue of concern for consumer safety groups for years. now new evidence that despite all the warnings, hundreds of children end up in the nation's emergency departments due to injuries sustained from window blinds, and when it comes to entanglement injuries, many of these children do not survive. researchers looked at 26 years of data, estimating more than 16,000 window blind injuries and kids younger than 6 during this

defiance we're told. we begin with abc's elizabeth kirk. >> reporter: this is the moment authorities say a 27-year-old man detonated a pipe-bomb he had strapped to his body. >> this was an attempted terrorist attack. >> reporter: that attack coming right in the middle of morning rush hour. >> inside the subway they'ide th evacuating at this time. >> reporter: police responding to a reported explosion and 7:20 monday morning near times square in a busy underground passage way that connects to the port authority bus terminal, the largest in the world. these four officers approaching the suspect on the ground but still alive, taken to the hospital with injuries to his arms and torso. that man now identified as akayed ullah. originally from bangladesh, he moved to the u.s. several years ago. officials say he told them he was inspired by isis propaganda and built the makeshift bomb in his brooklyn apartment using instructions he found on the internet and is believed to have

acted alone. >> the device is based on a pipe bomb. it was affixed to his person with a combination of velcro and zip ties. >> reporter: in the immediate aftermath, commuters quickly evacuated. >> i heard something go boom! i saw smoke and i got out of there. >> reporter: the nypd armed with assault rifles and bomb-sniffing dogs moved in. and in brooklyn, the fbi searching the suspect's apartment, the bomb squad parking right outside. in the meantime, the suspect's family released a statement which read in part that they are heartbroken and that they are confident the justice system will find the truth behind this attack. >> elizabeth, thank you. i also got to see the enormous law enforcement presence. here's something you don't see often. we are in the middle of manhattan, and things are at a standstill. police presence everywhere, the bomb squad on scene trying to ensure that the city is now safe. unbelievable to think of a bomb going off in this area, normally

full of tourists trying to get around and commuters trying to get to work. one thing is for sure, this could have been a lot worse. >> one of the reasons it wasn't, is because of the quick thinking officers on the scene. unfortunately, the nypd has become very experienced in these kind of things. this was third attack in new york city in just over a year. the most recent was weeks ago. that truck attack that killed eight people on a bike path. >> and like the two previous attacks, this appears to have been carried out by a so-called lone wolf terrorist, inspired but not necessarily directed by isis. let's ask former fbi agent and abc news consultant steve gomez for how prepared the new york city was for this sort of attack, steve. >> it appears based on what they described in the press conference that they had actually recently had a training exercise, a table top training exercise where they walked through this type of attack by a lone wolf. and so they were ready. and new york has been ready for

many, many years after 9/11, especially. so when they had this type of training, their preparedness for these situations and to respond is going to be better than anybody in the world. and we pretty much saw that today. >> and, steve, what do you think of the timing of the explosion? law enforcement said early on given the low number of injuries there was suspicion it may have been detonated early. what are your thoughts on that? >> yes it definitely looks like it's premature. the investigation is still conducted. fortunately, he's alive so they can get statements and hear what he has to say as to when he intended to explode the device and where. it looks like this wasn't a situation where there were mass casualties, fortunately for the citizens of new york and he was the only one that was injured. so, he probably did something when he was preparing the device and when he was moving through the area where it triggered the

device and it went off. >> so we should mention that the commuter services have reopened in that part of new york city. but investigators are still there on scene. what are they looking for? >> well, they're looking for any sign that there was an accomplice, somebody who was helping the suspect, any other indications about of device that they don't see from the device that was on him that was remaining. so they're doing a total forensic exam of the crime scene to try to figure out, is there anything more they can learn about the device. he may not even know really how he constructed the device. but maybe they're able to gather some little clues from the surrounding area. that's what they're looking for. >> and steve, when you talk about the device, it sounds like something you can put together with things from home depot, what does that mean from a law enforcement perspective? >> the fact is isis and al qaeda have put out a lot of material about how to construct a device

on the internet. sounds like he got some of that information. so yes, you can go to home depot and get that material and try to put it together. he clearly wasn't successful in this. that's a good thing from that standpoint. >> steve, just to give us a little perspective, obviously, we've talked to you so many times in instances of terror attacks. i do believe this is the first time we've talked about a suicide bomber on u.s. territory. how much of a game-changer and how alarming is this? >> this is very alarming. we have talked about the possibility of a suicide bomber acting in the u.s. and if this individual was thinking about doing that, it really changes things. think about all the different places where there are crowds, and crowds are the target. you go to the malls, especially during the holidays, this is going to be extremely dangerous for our society in the u.s. so we have to start thinking about different ways to deal with this type of attack of a suicide bomber.

alabama republicans saying they should put decency ahead of political party. three women who have already publicly accused the president of sexual misconduct are now calling on congress to investigate the president's alleged behavior. they appeared together in a news conference saying that president trump isn't being held accountable for what they claim he did to them in the past. rachel crooks among them, she was a trump tower receptionist 12 years ago when she said she introduced herself to trump and he began kissing her. >> i want to believe as americans we can put aside our political inclinations and some things do transcend politics. that we will hold mr. trump to that we will hold mr. trump to the same standard as harvey weinstein and the other men who were accountable for their reprehensible behavior. >> president trump has denied allegations of misconduct with more than a dozen women. the white house suggested it was closed due to the presidential election. five democratic senators are now calling on the president to

resign because of the allegations against him. president trump's former campaign chairman got a scolding but no punishment for a gag violation in the russia probe. paul manafort appeared in federal court on monday. the judge could have revoked his house arrest for his work and the ukrainian op-ed designed to improve his image. but for now the house arrest stands. the judge told manafort she won't tolerate any more statements on the case. and a louisiana investigator faces up to five years in prison for trying to get his hands on president trump's tax returns. jordan hamlin pleaded guilty. he used an irs data retrieval tool to try to get the tax information. he also faces a quarter million dollar fine. the massive wildfire in southern california has been burning for more than a week and is still out of control. it is moving now deeper into santa barbara county, destroying nearly 900 buildings. most of them single family homes with thousands more threatened. now, some residents are being allowed to return home if home actually still exists.

there were other things in the pipe that did not fully shatter because it wasn't packed tightly enough. the middle half of it was found fully intact. >> the pipe bomb was velcroed to him, it was a cold day. simply wearing a jacket over it, nobody could detect anything. >> reporter: he intentionally detonated it there because he saw christmas-themed posters. but experts say that doesn't make sense. >> it's a possibility, as we said that it might have been accidently detonated, but he doesn't want to admit that. >> anyone can go on the internet and download garbage and vileness on how to put together an amateur-level explosive device. >> reporter: while this attack yesterday was largely a failure, it does mark the first true suicide bombing on american soil. in manhattan, "world news now." and the family of the bombing suspect has released a

statement saying they are heartbroken over the allegations against ullah. think went on to say that we have every confidence that our justice system will find the truth behind the attack. in the meantime, we are learning more about the conditions of at least one of ullah's victims. 45-year-old veronica chavez was just feet away from the detonation. the blast left her temporarily deaf. and she says doctors tell her she will have to endure months of ringing in her ears. and of course we're going to continue to follow and get the very latest on that situation that is happening. the morning commute will be an interesting one in new york. but we do move on and there is a lake-effect warning in parts of upstate new york. an alberta clipper as it's called sweeping across the upper midwest bringing 5 to 10 inches of more snow as it moves into new england. it will stay inland. it will be followed by an arctic

blast. it will feel like single digits in the upper midwest and tomorrow in the interior northeast. it will be a little warmer along the northeast corridor but not much. it's a very different situation on the other side of the country with hot dry weather aiding the southern california wildfires. the largest of the fires has burned 231,000 acres and it's still growing. hundreds of homes were destroyed and thousands in danger. there's one reported fatality, a woman killed in a car crash while evacuating. that has residents saying this could be much worse. >> i'm heartbroken. but we're thankful that we're alive. and that's the most important thing. >> the thomas fire is presently the fifth largest on record in california. several smaller fires are now almost completely contained, but this one is being stubborn. officials say one reason is that there's never been a fire in that area in recorded history, so there is plenty of fuel to

burn. so president trump is setting america's sights on the moon and beyond. the president has signed a directive to refocus nasa on human exploration and discovery. he wants americans to return to the moon and eventually reach mars. last year, president obama announced the government would work with private companies. to send humans to mars and back by 2030. the president is upset with the "new york times" again. he says the paper got it wrong when it reported he watches as much as eight hours of tv every day. he also tweeted that contrary to the report he seldom if ever watches cnn or msnbc. the report was based on interviews with some 60 people who are close to the president. speaking of tv, not many people tuning in for "monday night football" that the dolphins beat the patriots. >> tom brady summed up his two-interception performance saying it was a bad night. the dolphins scored twice in the
