4:15 am
empathetic what they are going through nownow, and that's peops first reaction and focus should be. making sure that the family knows that people are standing by them and, you know, this is the time where policies are put aside. now, that won't last forever, but i think initially it one of diane feinstein where, of course, that was a violent act, but, still, people were shocked, and the city had to go not only into mourning, but also this to get a grip on keeping things going and keeping things afloat, so it's going to be a very delicate time, particularly, for the next few days, but, again, i think the family, our concern for the family is the priority right
4:16 am
now. >> of course. tom, you mentioned feinstein, and, of course, she was instrumental in convincing or persuading the mayor to run for office because -- >> caller: yeah. i was there. >> he initially say he was not going to do so. >> caller: that's right. we were in d.c. because of the giant victory, obama was president. we were all waiting outside the white house, and diane came up to ed lee, i want you to run for mayor, it's going to be important. i remember overhearing that, but, yeah, this is going to affect many of our races and many dynamics, you know, in san francisco politics for a long time, but, again, of course, you know, you want to keep respectful of the family's feelings, et cetera. i think ed was a grandfather as well. >> tom, can i just ask you about
4:17 am
mayor lee personally. this was not a bombastic guy when you interviewed him. he was soft spoken, fairly serious, but very pleasant when you spoke to him from a journalist point of view. what were your impressions of him? >> caller: you know, i first met aim at a city supervisor, president of the board. he was always in top positions with the city government, i think he was the chief administrative office for awhile, and then in charge of dpw, department of public works, and i had a good -- most supervisors had a very good relationship with him. you know, he was easy to deal with in those days, and he also had a good working knowledge of the city and could be veryings very helpful to the supervisor, even if the supervisor wasn't getting along with the mayor at
4:18 am
the time. you know, he always feel that he was comfortable with mr. lee, and a lot of that changed, of course, with politics, but it's a blood sport in san francisco. however, this is still a loss, still a shock. >> tom, it's early to talk about legacy, but i know you are an lgbt activist, a cause near and dear to your heart. what impact do you feel ed lee has had on the city and looking forward, what do you think he'll be remembered for? >> caller: well, i think he, as a mayor, continued the, you know, positive empowering roles that most recent mayors have played for the lgbt community. legacy, i know that, you know, despite the controversies and, you know, trajectory of his politics, he was very, very
4:19 am
active in keeping the warriors stadium going, and, you know, i think that definitely has been principle beyond that, you know, and then i think that some of the other policy things he's done, most people will be respectful and, you know, trying to not enhance, but, you know, to remember the things he did that were positive, and, also, he was the first asian-american male mayor, and i know that'll -- that will be definitely part of his legacy. >> very nice speaking with you. we appreciate your thoughts on mayor ed lee this morning. >> caller: okay. >> we thank you for calling in. hope to talk to you soon. >> caller: all right, thank you, bye bye. we'll continue that coverage of the breaking news, of course, and we are also covering major news across the country. polls in alabama will be opening
