days. >> reporter: that's right. there have been a series of incidents. with the ghost ship hearing today i know what there being a target as an iconic symbol of justice, they weren't going to take any chances. at 10:30 a.m. with court hearings underway, a young man coming into the 12th street main entrance to the alameda courthouse, left his wheeling backpack outside the steps. when tracked down and questioned about it, he became vital. >> he actually assaulted our staff. he was taken to the ground and ultimately deteenaged. during that detention, we realize that had he was suffering some psychological issues. in addition, he is on probation for previous acts of vandalism. >> cagine teams swarmed the building closing 12th street to traffic. it turned out to not be

dangerous but officials said they are being extra cautious after a separate fire bomb incident at 4:00 a.m. you can still see the burn marks by the front door. >> this was the second in the last ten days. >> it used beauty age canisters were designed to intentionally start a fire. and alameda county says they are now talking with federal officials about whether those two small fire bombs being set off, if that constitutes acts of terrorism or vandalism. in the meantime, with that suspect in custody, the sheriff says he will face charges of assaulting the deputies. thank you. oakland city workers are back at work. and one of the biggest tasks at hand is resuming the clean-up of homeless encampments. they cleaned up the encampment at sixth street.

they were put on hiatus when 3,000 workers walk off. a final agreement has not yet been reached. >> a devastating thomas fire in ventura and santa barbara counties continues to grow again. fears that stronger winds overnight could continue into friday. firefighters made some good progress but the fire did grow overnight by acres. the thomas fire is 25% contained. >> weather conditions, in particular, the wind. such a big deal for firefighters. >> the weather conditions have certainly not been helpful. here's a look at live doppler dr the fire danger has been extended to friday morning, 10:00, for a wide area southern california. let's look closely at the area of the thomas fire.

the winds at the surface are relatively light. but of course, they're stronger and gustier at the higher elevations. the relative humidity is very low. the temperatures from upper 70s to mid 80s. let me give you a look at what we expect to have. it will increase. between 20 and 40 miles per hour. and they won't decrease much. they'll increase in some locations by tomorrow evening. look for 46 miles per hour gusts. it will continue into friday morning when the wind will diminish a little bit. the upper level wind is still pulling smoke out to sea and bringing it to our area, accounting for the haze here. i'll give you a look at that in a few minutes. >> thank you. police are searching for more possible suspects thank car and police chase. it happened with a stolen car around 2:30 this morning.

police chase ad honda accord on to southbound 101 into milbrae. speeds reached 100 miles per hour. that car crashed through a gate at the green hills country club and then fell into an embankment and nobody was injured. police arrested two women and one man at the scene. police department honored two women. the two said they were in the right place at the right time of the abc7 news reporter chris has the story. >> reporter: the call that police never want to hear. one of their own under attack with a weapon in the mix. they face dangers all the time. when something like that goes on, a police officer knows, this is bad. >> last september, the san francisco police officer renaldo was responding to a report of a suspicious person walking around terminal one at sfo. upon arrival, he attempted to engage with the man, the

64-year-old, who police say attacked him with a knife. the two wrestled on the ground, catching the attention of two offduty security agents. one was on break. the other had just finished for the day. >> he was in a fight for his life and without these two, it could have gone another way. >> in front of friends and colleagues, the san francisco police department recognized valerie smith and vincent for helping to save the officers' life. >> wasn't a thought in my head that i was scared or ferry or anything. it is more, this person is in danger. and i'll going to do my best to help out. >> the two of they will jumping into action to help subdue the suspect. >> i don't think i'm a hero. i just did what i had to do. i'll do it. i will do it again and i don't think, i won't think twice about it. >> a sense of gratitude about being able to make a difference. >> beyond words. i don't know what to say. i wasn't expecting there. it is overwhelming.

>> abc7 news. the suspect doris johnston was charged with attempted murder of a peace officer but has been declared not mentally competent to stand trial. the officer is still recovering from the injuries but hopes to return to work in the coming months. the city of carmel is taking a controversial step. they plan to install six security cameras, equipped with license plate read orders roads leading in and out of town. the police chief says the cameras is that readers could prove use envelop investigating a crime. the amp clu has raised concerns about the useful license plate readers, claimin there are few or no restrictions on protect privacy rights. senator john mccain heading back to the hospital only hours after his daughter was very emotional on "the view." >> how san franciscans are continuing to pay tribute to mayor ed lee.

a colorful show of minute by minute, an impromptu memorial began to grow as small groups placed flowers. many visitors are members of the city's asian-american community. diana wang brought her 2-year-old daughter leah saying it is important to mark the man who made political history in san francisco. >> it says something to have the first asian-american may or of the city. and i think that's just something i wanted to bring her out to show her. just how we pay almosts to the city. >> i was on my way to the opera house and i wanted to see the memorial. although i don't live in the city anymore, it was important to me. >> i said maybe everybody would appreciate that. so i said if people wanted to take their break with me, walk

morning. can you walk us through the first initial hours? those difficult first hours? >> well, i can't imagine it was any more difficult than what it was like for the family. you know, i think of the supervisors who received a text around midnight maybe. we thought he was in stable condition. around 2:00 a.m., received a call from my colleague delivering the news saying the mayor had passed away and i couldn't believe what i heard. i'm still in disbelief. >> there were no signs, right? >> no. i saw him on friday and he was really wonderful the kids at the elementary school. couldn't have predicted it. >> since then it's been definitely nonstop despite the massive grief. can you talk about what the energy is like? >> every where you go, you run into people in city departments. they're in tears. everyone is hugging each other. he was more than just a mayor to

a lot of us. he was so down to earth and so genuine that a lot of people felt he was their friend. so there are definitely a lot of tears. >> last night you were talking about what he's meant to you. he was the one who gave you your first shot. can you talk about how he's mentored you? >> back this 2013 he had this great opportunity to appoint someone to be the sunset supervisor. and i'll just really grateful that he saw opportunity in me and potential in me. when i didn't see it in myself. he really took a risk on me as a 29-year-old to report to the board of supervisors. he really set a high bar by being himself in the role. someone who came through the ranks through all different city roles and city departments. he is not your typical politician.

friday. although we have more mild days ahead. check out the forecast for tonight's lows. we expect lows to drop to 29. 33 in livermore. 36 in oakland. even near the bay, it will be very, very chilly. tomorrow it will be another hazy and mild day with high to mid to upper 60s from coast to bay to inland. let's look at our air quality. it will be the second consecutive air quality day. we'll have good air quality in many regions. that's good news. one reason is a shift in the wind pattern. it will be quite strong going into the end of the week. so friday night at 10:00, it will be gusting 35 to about 50 miles an hour on the coast. and then overnight friday into saturday. especially in the hills. we'll see gusts ranging from 20

to about 45 miles an hour, going into saturday night. and then finally by sunday morning. we'll see the wind becoming a little bit calmer. here's a satellite radar showing high pressure. it is deflecting the storm track to our north. skipping ahead to next friday, december 22nd, that's our next best chance of rain. maybe up around cloverdale, it looks like it will be a semi circle around the best of the bay area and not produce much wet weather. it looks like yesterday's seven-day forecast. mainly sunny, hazy, dry and mild. the wind increased and the shift in wind direction will improve the air quality quite a bit. >> that's what we call a holding pattern. >> that's exactly right.

memorial services have been announced for san francisco mayor ed lee who died suddenly yesterday morning. a public viewing will be held on friday at city hall from eight clog a.m. to 7:00 p.m. memorial services will be held on sunday at 3:00 p.m. also at city hall. burn marks were left at the scene. somebody threw a fire bomb at the building. that started a fire at 4:00 a.m. it is the second such attack in the last ten days there. president trump struck an upbeat tone with this congratulatory tweet to doug jones on his victory last night. the president called it a hard fought victory. mr. trump had endorsed republican roy moore in a hotly contested race.

moore still hasn't conceded the race. this despite the call to do so. what does this mean to the rest of the country? >> reporter: doug jones said he is likely to reach across the i'll but it is still two weeks before he is sworn into office. we're seeing republicans and democrats laying their plans. in alabama, doug jones is celebrating his unlikely victory. >> the people of alabama of spoken. >> reporter: jones is the first is democrat in 25 years to be elected to the senate. besting roy moore who remained defiant, be yet conceding his loss. >> realize when the vote is this close, that it is not over. his campaign was beset by multiple allegations of sexual misconduct including sexual assault of two teenagers.

the jones campaign saw a tremendous boost by female voters, especially those with young children. many political watchers saw not only a republican flawed candidate but a greater referendum on president trump and the majority. >> this means congress is officially in play. democrats will have a shot to take over the united states senate. >> reporter: chuck schumer called on republicans to hold off on a vote on the tax bill until jones is sworn in. >> it would be wrong to jam through this tax bill without giving the newly elected senator to alabama the opportunity to cast his vote. >> the president who congratulated him on his victory plans to push forward with tax reform as soon as possible sflfl the leader of the party, i would have liked to have had the seat. i want to endorse the people running. i will tell you that to me it is very, very, just very important to get this vote. >> here in alabama, republicans

say that they consider this race over. and we've heard from national republican who's think they've dodged a bullet with roy moore losing this election. when doug jones does take his seat in the senate, democrats will control 49 seats. publics, 51. and given the razor thin margins we've seen play out in congress, that could potentially tip the balance of power in some upcoming legislation. reporting live. abc7 news. >> what happens if moore doesn't concede and contests the results? what is the process that ensues after that? >> well, i spoke to one democratic official a little bit ago. he said frankly, he doesn't care at this point if moore does decide to concede. once the secretary of state certifies the results and we have every indication they intend to do so. the job is done. and he said at this point, it is just poor sportsmanship.

>> thank you. live in alabama. the stunning results making republicans sit up and take notice. we spoke with the political director. what are the implications? >> you look at the demographics of the state. you look at the outside political factors and you say how can a republican possibly lose? the answer is the democrat just knitted together coalition of minority voters, female voters, younger voters. they showed up even in ruby red alabama. and that sends shock waves to republicans across the country. if you can compete there, you can compete anywhere. >> he tads strong turnout against roy moore turns into the larger me too movement that we will in the state, even if they had voted republican before, sent a very clear message. >> al franken is praising the woman who will replace him in the u.s. senate.

suicide bombing this new york city. he made his first court appearance today. here's the story. >> reporter: burned over his arms and torso, he appeared in court for the first time today via video conference. there was a bed sheet up to his neck concealed physical signs of his condition. the 27-year-old is accused of trying to brother himself up with a home made pipe stations, between new york city's port authority bus terminal. a terminal near he was charged with five terror related accounts including a use of a weapon of mass destruction. authorities believe he planned the attack for about a year and acted alone. >> a lone wolf is an isolated actor who, i detest the fact some people decide to use violence for whatever sad and sick reenlss, in many cases. >> his wife spoke with abc news from her home in bangladesh.

she said she talked to her husband about 5:00 a.m. to wake him for work and he never mentioned anything about the attack. and she said he never mentioned anything with the united states. authorities said they found a passport in his apartment with a hand written note reading, oh, america, die in your rage. they said he identified with isis and was angry with the way muslims have been treated in the middle east. abc news, new york. package thieves have gone to a new low in arizona. check this video out from scottsdale. police are looking for this woman. she is wearing had a looks like a postal servic shirt. she delivers an empty box and took off with two full boxes. impersonating a postal employee is a federal crime. you have to watch out for that. especially this time of year. >> very sneaky. a touching moment between two people on the opposite sides of the party line.

princes william and harry walked the red carpet. they both had cameos in the movie. they played storm troopers so you really can't see them because their faces are covered. they had a cute moment. look at that, rolling up to the princes to say hello. it hits theaters on friday. disney owns the "star wars" brand and also is the parent company of abc 7. there was a chill in the air last night. the morning frost definitely proof enough here. roof tops and wind shields, iced up. even frosty was spared from the cold. some came prepared making money morning a little easier. i was delayed driving my kids to school because the wind shield was iced over. i'm going, huh! more wind shield weimer. >> that was today's excuse? >> the teacher didn't buy it.

senator john mccain is back in the hospital this afternoon. he was treated in maryland for normal side fektss of his cancer therapy. it comes hours after a touching moment on "the view" between former vice president joe biden and john mccain's daughter meghan. senator mccain has the same type of cancer that biden son's bo died from two years ago. she became emotional after talking about her father and gave some advice. >> there is hope. if anybody can make it, your

found out. they called you and joe. >> so what happened was, this dr. young, one of the great cancer hospitals, her dad is at a great hospital as well. but he is a, he's a neuro oncologist. so bo got this devastating diagnosis like your dad. it was after the operation, the tumor was taken out. we were about to go home. we sat there and bo said no percentag percentages. i said what should bo do now? he said he was going to run for governor. he said go home and run for governor. go home and run for governor. so we have to keep moving like there is going to happen. that's why i set up this foundation, after we did the moon shot. i swear, guys, we are going to beat this damn disease. we really are. a.m. right here on abc 7. a lot of people are looking to finish their holiday should go on. there's one san jose boy who is out collecting toys for others. we first told you about him last year. we caught up with him and this year he's delivering more tan ever before. >> at the bottom of the stairs of this basement is the office of joey, 12-year-old toy collector. all of these toys -- >> according to the list, 574. >> will be delivered to the marines on december 22nd for the toys for tots in santa clara county. with more than a week to collect, his toy drive is still revving up. >> it makes me feel really good that i can collect that many toys and i know it will help the marines in receiving their goal. their total. >> if joey looks familiar, that's because we did a story on him last decembe. when he delivered about 200 toys to the marines. >> i think he has some goodgoodo

i'm sure you know the nutcracker is a holiday tradition. in one bay area theater, this class sic being performed with a little bit of a twist. instead of ballet, the dancers will be doing hip hop >> you may recognize the music.

this is a nutcracker performance like you've never seen. no ballet shoes for these moves. >> you can expect to see break dancing, popping, animation, pretty much all styles of hip hop. >> the choreographer is one of the directors of hip hop nutcracker. the basic story line is the sail. it is set on christmas eve. a young girl enters a dream and the nutcracker takes her on an adventure. >> all i know is ballet. i saw this and fell in love with it. >> for the 50th anniversary, they wanted to celebrate genres of dance. the old and the new. they experimented with a hip hop version last year at the fox theater. it was received so well, they are bringing it back again and adding a second performance.
