from fisherman's wharf and pier 39 where the iconic sea lions live. >> this is a sight of a second sea lion attack. one that sent a man to the hospital. he is said to be in fair condition. you can tell from these dangerous signs that have been posted along the beach. the danger signs kept most swimmers out of the water but we did see a few sneak in a few laps. >> they won't keep me out of the water. >> they want you to take the water seriously -- take warning seriously. two people were attacked by a sea lion within 24 hours. the latest happened at 8:00 this morning when the aquatic park was filled with swimmers. >> we see seals and sea lions

all the time and it is pretty unusual to be bitten. >> a man was bit in the groin area. we knew billingsley was on board when he heard the man's distress call. >> i heard the screams from the entrance to the harbor. and i looked over there and the guy was screaming, screaming. >> that's when nearby swimmers went to the man's aid. an attack also happened near the entrance. the bites deep enough, both men were sent to the hospital. >> both bites were fairly serious. i think both gentlemen are doing okay now but it is more than just a little nip. we want to close the cove to swimmers and try to keep people out for safety and try to assess the situation. >> park rangers say incidents like this are extremely unusual. the last time people were bitten by a sea lion near san francisco was about 11 years ago. also at aquatic park. while the signs may not keep everyone out, officials caution,

answer at your own risk. >> throughout, tonight brave ones. >> officials will monitor the situation. but the plan for now is to reopen monday. at aquatic park. abc7 news. and the 56-year-old swiller attacked yesterday by a sea lion showed off the injuries to abc7 news today. >> i had been approached by sea lions before. none were as aggressive has the guy. he came over to me and attacked me. >> he said he tried to fend the sea lion off but wound up sinking a tooth into his forearm. >> he came at me from the right. i blocked him like this. one tooth went into my forearm here. >> christian said he was lose go

blood quickly when he managed to flag down a sailboat. he was rushed to san francisco general hospital where doctors expect him to make a full recoveriful. >> a coincidence. a young sea lion that was rescued from stinson beach was set free after being treated by the center. they said animals aren't normally aggressive toward humans but there could be an underlying cause. laura anthony has her story from marin koibl. >> oh, yeah. >> it was a short trip for young chatzky. to nearby rodeo beach for his release. the male california sea lion just finished three weeks of treatment for a kidney condition that left him sick and stranded. >> he was suffering from a bacterial disease that causes kidney failure. our team of experts and veterinarians were able to treat him with fluids and antibiotics and he recovered. >> after some initial

its way to the sea. i don't know why it is so moving but i think we're connected in some way that we don't realize. >> it's easy to mix up seals and sea lions. a sea lion has external ear animals and large front filmers. they are often loud and social. a seal has to external ears and small front flippers that don't allow to it walk on land. seals are shamed like torpedos and they bounce on their bell whiz not in the water. >> he was mayor for the people of san francisco. thousands came out to say goodbye to mayor ed lee. his body was brought from the mortuary in daly city. the procession that started on 280 and went through san

francisco city streets. it ended appropriately at city hall. there was a large american flag aloft to honor him. a public viewing open until 7:00 tonight. so many people have been coming the pay their almosts. we have team coverage this somber farewell and the impact on the city. i want to begin we leanne. >> reporter: this line has been very long, sense 8:00 this morning. many people arriving here, crying. and his co-workers, still very much in shock after his unexpected death. today they said goodbye to a friend. people from all walks of life waited in line to say farewell to the former mayor. a man they say embraced humility. >> so calm and humble. there won't be a man like him

construction debris bay bridge drivers see on the open side will one day be transformed into a vibrant new park. they took first step by signing key lease deal today. >> if you've never used the pike trail on the eastern edge because it is tough to get to and the area around it looks, well, uninviting, a solution is on the way. this will be a hub. >> the maintenance facility that's being renovated into a visitor's center. they signed a contract lease go and it 2,000 feet of land all the way to the water's edge. she said it is part of the mission. >> making sure that the history of this building, of this part of the bay, is provided and passed on to the next

eric thomas, abc7 news. >> today, tickets went on sale for north bay wildfire neal schonn. it will be held at the independent on february 9th. tickets cost $100 each. . the red hot chilly peoplers headlined. the first ban together bay area concert featuring metallica, dave math use and more raised more than $15 million. in southern california, the firefight remains active against what will likely become third largest fire ever in state history. while there are technically four active fires burning right now, the main focus is on the thomas fire. containment has increased to 35%.

it has burned more than a quarter million acres in area about double the size of sandal jose. more than 1,000 buildings have burned down and evacuation roers still in effect. one firefighter died yesterday while working this fire. >> we do have some fire concerns as well. >> those winds are getting stronger. it will mix out the pollutants and the haze. a pleasant friday evening. it is 55 degrees in san francisco. in fact, we have temperature readings smack dab in the mid 50s. as the old phrase went many years ago. all the way from san francisco to san hose, gilroy, and half moon bay. a two or three degree range. this is view looking westward.

and we have a wider range of temperatures. as we look down to san francisco, let's take a look at our forecast features. gusty winds tonight. increased fire danger. soinl tomorrow with better, much better air quality. the slight chance of showers next week. showers that we can certainly use. we're looking at increasing wind gusts. let's look at our wind gust animation. we'll see gusts 45 miles an hour. the gusts won't taper off much. it will be a windy day. going into sunday morning, we'll see the winds taper off. still breezy but not gusty. now, as the wind gusts increase, the relative humidity will be

ready to decrease. starting 10:00, going into tomorrow. it is dangerously low. special when i the increasing wind. those two factors, of course, elevate the fire risk. moving along, overnight under clear and mainly clear. we'll see the low temperatures into the upper 30s. in the north bay valleys. upper 40s on around 50 will be the lows near the coast and bay. the highs will be relatively mild. low to mid 60s along the bay. maybe a couple of upper 60s inland. skipping ahead to wednesday. we'll probably be looking at the next chance of rainfall. we'll see a little rain moving into the north bay. some snow is expected in central sierra and into wednesday night.

you can't keep a good independent brewery down. back open in san francisco's hunter's point. a problem with ownership closed down the brewery for nine months. but employees are back serving pints and glasses of beer. speak easy is flown for its signature big daddy and brew masters say new ones are already in development. it sells statewide and even in new york. bottling will begin in january. largest ikea in the world recently opened in burbank. wasn't the size of the story that caught the attention but an art installation outside the store, wrapped in white plastic. here it is. take a look at it.

a new development. the los gatos couple who pleaded no contest to charges they sexually molested and raped the son they adopted from russia were sentenced today. he wept and told the court that he meant no harm before a judge sentenced him to a 24-year material. his wife carolyn received a 12-year sentence. prosecutors stay abuse went on for a decade after the couple documented him when i was just 9 years old. he is now 24 and shared advice with victims of abuse who are in a similar situation. >> sending this men to anyone who has gone through something like this. stand up for your right to live your life and your power. >> ralph and carolyn will pay restitution dennis, who says he was kicked out of the house he grew up in after he went to the authorities. >> the i-team has been investigating a dangerous stretch of road and as a result,

then catch 20/20 and don't miss abc7 news at 11:00. finally a few thoughts about what really matters. ed lee is right where he loved to be tonight. at san francisco city hall. not in the way he or anyone else would have wanted. as his body lies in state in the rotunda, those who knew him and of him refloekt a man who served his community and by extension, his country. he loved being the mayor of san francisco. even if he came to the job by accident. i'm proud to say that i knew him and on many occasions.occasionsc whether ed loved to laugh. he also loved to make a difference and to help others. the private bureaucrat turned public servant was at confidence as he was kind. he loved the city.
