it's sunday, december 17. good morning and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen in for carolyn tyler. let's have a first look at the forecast. here's lisa argen. she's tracking the doppler for us. hi, lisa. >> hi, everyone. still some east winds in our upper elevations. a look outside from our east hills camera. the air quality is good and the winds still quite gusty. 42 in gill roadway, 53 in the city, and we're looking at no delays here at sfo. temperatures looking like this from the upper 40s to the mid-50s around the bay. a warmer morning for some of you, so as the winds continue to ease up, it's getting a little

cool out there, the atmosphere not as mixed. 11 degrees cooler in novato and 11 degrees cooler at mt. tam and wind gust the in oak hill. this red flag warning is about to expire in the next hour, but those breezy wind have us concerned in the low humidity in the north bay and the east bay, and we're looking for gusts to last right around the 10:00 to 11:00 hour. above average numbers with plenty of sunshine. chris? lisa, thank you. some tense moments near union square this morning. police say a man armed with a gun at the four seasons hotel peacefully surrendered. here's a look at the hotel on market street and third street. police say they were called to the hotel just before 5:00 this morning. someone reported hearing gunshots from inside the building. officers were able to secure the area and negotiated with the suspect. the man finally surrendered at

around 6:30 this morning. police did find a gun at the scene. the four seasons has released a statement saying, quote, the situation involved a guest at the hotel. the authorities were immediately notified and the situation is has been resolved. all guests and employees are safe. time now is 9:03, and happening today, thousands of people will pay tribute to late san francisco mayor ed lee. a public memorial service will be held this afternoon at city hall. some of the bay area's most prominent politicians are expected to be there. abc 7 reporter tiffany wilson has more on the preparations. >> reporter: the steps of city hall bear the weight of san francisco's love for mayor ed lee. >> it's thought provoking, sad and beautiful. >> reporter: this memorial serves as a living reminder of the mayor the city lost unexpectedly after he collapsed at a supermarket tuesday. the past few days have been filled with both public and private grief. thousands paid their respects

friday. the owner of sam's diner, where mayor lee was a regular, waited in line. >> i was ready to cry all day long. >> reporter: mayor lee always sat in this booth at sam's. he even ate his last breakfast here, pancakes and eggs. the owner said she won't forget his support. >> we'll dedicate this table and have a little plaque for him. i will be there. >> reporter: doors open to the public at 2:00. the service is expected to begin at 3:00. diane feinstein, gabby newsome and nancy pelosi are among the people scheduled to speak. standing room only space will be available upstairs on the balcony. the manager at new asia, one of mayor lee's favorite

restaurants, say his employees are in mourning. >> all of us are mourning mr. lee. >> reporter: a city in mourning getting one final chance to say goodbye. in san francisco, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. >> and if you can't make it to city hall, we'll have live coverage starting at 3:00 p.m. at abc 7 news as well as our abc 7 news app. gusty winds are expected to continue throughout the morning, but yesterday that wind caused problems all day long, everything from downed trees to boat rescues. abc 7 news reporter lonnie rivera has the story from sausalito. >> reporter: powerful wind force. this boat flipped on its side. water ran onto the vessel as the wind kept rescue boats across the bay busy all day. >> we rescued multiple people and addressed many vessels that were adrift, bringing people to safety. >> reporter: in the berkeley

marina, a similar story. the u.s. coast guard rescued two stranded boaters after the wind pushed their boat up against some pilings. a giant redwood fell onto skylonda drive off skyline boulevard. that tree smashed a car and knocked down power lines. in vallejo, high winds snapped off power and cable lines, blocking the streets. and it was a close call along these cal tran tracks in atherton. branchs covered two tracks. the train was able to stop in time, avoiding any further danger. in sausalito, word traveled fast about all the damage. >> i'm just getting home, but if it really did hit a few boats, then that could be some damage and expensive damage. >> we have reports of multiple people in the water. there were a lot of good samaritans helping people. >> reporter: strong winds are expected to continue through sunday morning.

in sausalito, lonnie rivera, abc 7 news. further up in the north bay, the wind has been causing a lot of anxiety for people who have experienced the wildfires last october. the return of high fire danger is bringing back painful memories, especially for families who lost their homes. fire departments continue to be on high alert this morning. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has the details from santa rosa. >> i'm scared to death. >> reporter: for casey sumstein, there was no ignoring high winds at this giving event for victims of the october wildfires. >> i'm living up in windsor in a little apartment, and of course, i'm thinking, again, here we go. >> it brings up a lot of angst because it's very blustery. >> reporter: a similar fire two months ago created a monster firestorm, chasing thousands from their homes, leaving neighborhoods in ashes.

ba tttalion chief equipment is back in service. fire engines are patrolling hilltop areas. between the low relative humidity and high winds, that could equate to a situation that could be dangerous, so that's why santa rosa fire department is on alert. >> reporter: the fire department tweeting shs elevated fire dangers return. we're taking several proactive measures including putting our fire engines back into summertime mode. what are you doing? >> tina tyco and her husband collected $20,000 worth of toys for kids displaced by the fires. >> we hear it time and time again, how is santa going to find me? so to be able to tell them and assure them that no matter where you are, santa will always find you. >> reporter: a generous community giving back this holiday.

meantime, fire crews say they will be on heightened alert all weekend long. cornell bernard, santa rosa, abc 7 news. fires spreading quickly across parts of santa barbara. more than 269,000 acres have burned. containment is at 40%. it has become the third largest fire in state history. fire crews doing everything they can to get a handle on it. abc 7 news reporter marci gonzalez is in santa barbara with the latest. >> reporter: this relentless wildfire exploding in southern california. >> the fire was racing so fast. >> reporter: more than 10,000 acres burning just since friday. flames like a glowing gash cutting through the hillside, threatening homes, forcing 16,000 new mandatory evacuations. weather conditions creating a huge challenge for firefighters as we saw firsthand. the major concern out here is the wind. you can see just how strong it is gusting right now, carrying these flames in unpredictable directions. those gusts reaching 65 miles an

hour. >> it burned a lot today. >> reporter: more than 267,000 acres charred since the thomas ago, and it is still spreading fast. >> i'm shocked that we don't have a hundred homes on the ground right now. >> reporter: among those forced from their homes in santa barbara county, actor rob lowe putting these pictures on instagram of these flames appearing alarmingly close. and oprah winfrey tweeting, still praying for our little town. p katy perry's little brother tweeting, the firefighters fighting back as fast as they can. 12 states battling the inferno costing $110 million so far. this morning firefighters fighting tirelessly to save homes and lives. cautiously optimistic. >> we're hoping this will be the

good morning, everyone. time right now is 9:14. we're taking a live look outside at our east bay hills camera. meteorologist lisa argen returns in a bit with the full 7-day forecast and we'll see the u.s. astronauts are on

board the international space station. they took off around 11:30 last night pacific time. the capsule entered orbit 90 minutes later. it's expected to enter the space station by tuesday. the spacex is at the space station as well. it is carrying 5,000 pounds of good including barley seeds and just in time for all others burn when returned to earth. this is the dragon's second trip to the international space station. this morning new details on how the u.s. government financed a secret program to help detect ufos for years. the "new york times" reports the mysterious pentagon program began in 2007 and was first funded at the request of senate majority leader harry reid. officials at the program analyzed video encounters between unknown objects and military plants. take a look at this video released by the defense

department. this is of a 2004 encounter near san diego between two navy fighter jets and a mysterious object. >> what's going on? >> there's a whole fleet of them. look a theon the asa. >> oh, my gosh. >> they're going against the wind. >> look at that thing. >> "the times" reports that congress stopped funding the program back in 2012, but the pentagon would not confirm if they have a different ufo program that's operating somewhere else in the department of defense. time now is 9:16. people gave up 271 guns during a weapons buyback event in san francisco. abc 7 news was on howard street at the south of market area while police showed off this military grade bazooka. someone turned in that weapon of

war yesterday. officers also collected handguns, shotguns and high-powered rifles. the city took a big step toward being less violent. >> we got a bazooka off the streets, we got a cannonball off the streets, assault rifles. we got rid of a whole bunch of things you can name. >> they also tell abc 7 news the event was successful because of a no questions asked policy for the people who surrendered their guns. a special group of people came to visit abc 7 news last night. meet our local bay area chapter of best buddies. the nonprofit helps those with intellectual and developmental disabilities make friends and find meaningful employment, as well as help with a leadership development. last night nancy, b.j., roy and some of their closest friends got to sit in with a 6:00 p.m. newscast. abc 7 anchor deion limb has been

involved with best buddies for four years now. she's hoping this can help make a difference. well, winter is just around the corner and the season is shaping up to be a mild one. take a look at these pictures from nasa. last december is on the left, and this december is on the right. across the whole state, you can see the snowpack is visibly smaller. here's a tighter view focused around lake tahoe. the good news, there is still enough snow to hit the slopes. many resorts like northstar say the skiing is worth the trip. the resort has opened all slopes on the mountain from top to bottom. >> good morning to you. starting with live doppler 7. scoured out the clouds. still some upper elevation wind and a cooler start for some of you. but once again, our big dome of high pressure deflecting any storm systems from invading the bay area for the next couple of days, and we do have some minor changes to talk about. sfo right now no delays.

lots of sun out there. it's 53 in the city, 54 in oakland, san jose checking in at 56 while half moon bay sits in the upper 50s. still those offshore winds and they are bringing in that dry air. and it is certainly dry. not as dry as it was yesterday because we will see these winds relax throughout the day. 54 by the delta as well as concord, with upper 40s for you in santa rosa and novato. here's a live look from mt. tam. you can see the trees blowing just a bit. yesterday we had a peak index at 60 miles an hour around mt. diablo. certainly gusty winds anywhere from 20 to 30 miles an hour. gusty winds relax this afternoon, today and tomorrow, and perhaps a few sprinkles into your wednesday morning. the surface winds right now, you can see the direction with the arrow out of the north/northeast. that's that offshore component. as we go up in height about 1 to

2,000 feet, gusty winds in oak hills and mt. tam. they're starting to ease up in some parts of the bay and that will be the trend the rest of the afternoon. if we go through our hour by hour forecast, you'll notice by 1:00 in the afternoon, the wind flow still out of the northeast, but boy, it really is different. in fact, we're looking anywhere from about 5 to 10 miles an hour throughout the afternoon, so you'll be able to feel that warmer sun, and it should feel pretty nice out there. fast-forward to tuesday, 4:00, and you'll notice the increasing clouds. weather system to the north. is it going to make it to us? it looks like it may into wednesday morning. most of the activity moves into the sierra nevada with a little bit of snow, rain/snow mix, and it looks hike the bay area could see anywhere from a couple hundred dr hundredths to about two-thirds mix. the relative humidity will also

help because it's been so dry around here with anywhere from about 10 to 20%. as for today without the wind, we shouldn't be as dry. still, we would like to see some rain in here. 4 54 in richmond, 54 in fremont. the sunday morning forecast showing a string of sunny days. download our ak weather app, but you'll notice if you have that app, the winds ease up and the temperatures coming up to the mid-60s till about 4:00 this afternoon. the sun setting at 5:00 and we'll look at chilly mornings without the wind. it looks like we're back to our dry weather pattern, and, you know, everybody knows we need rain, we want rain. at least we'll get rid of the wind today. >> you're tracking it throughout the day. >> of course. up ahead, a choir's rendition of a traditional holiday tune has gone viral.

bikes for the toys for tots. the kiwanis club pitched in to make sure all the winners got not only a new bike but a helmet to match. kids and parents guide freedom hall in san francisco. abc 7 news was in the tenderloin has hundreds of volunteers handed out toys to nearly 1200 kids in need. they said this event is not just about the toys, it's about creating a joyful experience for the holidays. donor funds helped the charity purchase about 800 toys this year. they're putting out a call for more turkeys so they can feed those in need in the concord area. they said they need about 400 birds to make sure families can have a turkey dinner. if you would like to help out, you can drop off a frozen turkey at the salvation army in concord on clayton road.

still those winds around allowing for a dry atmosphere with mid-50s novato, fairfield and concord and santa rosa at 49. still, winds anywhere from 36 miles an hour. and mt. tam, they will continue it ease up. that red flag warning about to expire in the next hour as well as that wind advisory above 1,000 feet. low 60s by noontime, less wind, and by about 4:00 this afternoon, well into the mid-60s. we do have some changes with the extended outlook. maybe some rain by wednesday. chris? >> lisa, thank you. a public memorial service honoring the late mayor ed lee. the doors open at 2:00 this afternoon, the service starts at 3:00. senator diane feinstein, lieutenant governor gavin newsom are among the public officials scheduled to speak. as a city prepares to say goodbye to its late mayor, the

legacy. >> if you'd like to watch the memorial celebrating the mayor's life, we'll have live coverage starting at 3:00 p.m. right here on abc 7 news, as well as our abc 7 news app. this morning president trump is dealing with a flurry of headlines about the russia probe. his lawyers are preparing to sit down with special counsel robert mueller this week for a rare meeting. mueller has obtained thousands of e-mails from senior trump officials who took part in the transition between the campaign and the administration. abc news reporter david wright has the latest. >> reporter: today the trump transition team is accusing the special counsel of illegally obtaining tens of thousands of private e-mails from the president's inner circle. this 7-page letter sent last night to key senate and house committee leaders by a lawyer for the transition is the latest effort to challenge robert

mueller's investigation. >> they're spending millions and millions of dollars. there is absolutely no collusion. i didn't make a phone call to russia. i have nothing to do with russia. everybody knows it. >> reporter: the president himself has blasted that investigation as a witch hunt, questioned the objectivity of some of its investigators, and even lambasted the fbi itself. its reputation in tatters, the worst in history, he said in one recent tweet. now the new letter raises concerns about career staffers in the agency that offers office supplies and other bureaucratic support services to the federal government, accusing them of breaking the law by handing over to the special counsel e-mails, laptops and other materials associated with top members of the presidential transition team. the materials produced included materials protected by the attorney-client privilege. the letter also accuses the staffers of circumventing the

department's general counsel who was hospitalized and incapacitated at the time. some democrats have expressed concern that the president may be looking for a pretext to fire bob mueller. >> the word on the hill when i left yesterday was that the president was going to make a significant speech at the end of next week, and on december 22nd, when we were out of d.c., he was going to fire robert mueller. >> reporter: the white house insists the president has no such plans and remains fully cooperative with the special counsel. david wright, abc news, washington. the time now is 9:35. federal officials are now denying that words such as fetus and transgender were banned from documents dealing with the multi-billion-dollar budget for the centers for disease control. the "washington post" reported that a new policy came up during a recent meeting at cdc headquarters in atlanta that banned the use of some words and expressions. they include fetus, transgender,

vulnerable, entitlement, diversity, evidence-based and science-based. now to a scary situation at a ski resort in pennsylvania. police say five people were injured yesterday after a ski lift chair slid backwards into the chair behind it, setting off a chain reaction. take a look at this video posted on facebook. it shows first responders rescuing skiers stranded on the lift. an investigation is now underway. the resort says the ski lift recently passed an inspection by the state. you've shopped till you dropped, but it won't mean a thing if your presents don't arrive on time. there are deadlines to make if you're planning on shipping them. abc 7 news reporter stephanie ramos has more on what you need to know. >> reporter: with only eight days left until christmas day, picking out that perfect present can be a little stressful. >> i'm always a last-minute shopper. >> reporter: but making sure it arrives under the tree in time is the real battle. a record 2 billion packages are

there. still a little breezy, but the winds will steadily ease up throughout the morning hours. that should be in the next three hours or so. red flag warning and wind advisory set to expire, but they really have allowed for the temperatures to stay pretty mild overnight. right now it's 53 san francisco, 54 oakland and mountain view with 56 in san jose. we're in the 50s from santa rosa, 60 in napa. numbers approaching where we should be this time of year, upper 50s in nevada, but we will surpass all those readings amid all the sunshine. you'll notice the ridgetop winds are just a little breezy here from mt. tam, and that's because we're still looking at that offshore component, that tighter pressure gradient which makes the winds blow. live doppler 7 right now all clear, and we have to really widen the perspective to see where the clouds are. they are moving up and over a huge ridge of high pressure that's protecting us from any incoming storms. but this ridge will weaken in the next 48 hours, and we should

see just a little bit of rain come in here tuesday night into wednesday. look at sutro. very nice visibility compared to where we were last week with the haze and smoke. so the gusty winds will be easing up throughout the 10:00 and 11:00 hour. then we're dry today, tomorrow. increasing clouds on tuesday and wednesday. perhaps a few sprinkles around here, which is better than what we've had, which is pretty much nothing for the entire month of december. the wind gusts anywhere from to 30 miles an hour, and mt. e diablo at 60 miles an hour. those are dangerous winds, and still we're up 20 to 40% of measurable moisture in the atmosphere. even though those winds will be light by 1:00, we still are experiencing the really dry air around here. it should get better in the days ahead. by 2:00 in the afternoon, very
