from the governor and u.s. senators to everyday ordinary residents whose lives were touched by ed lee. >> we have live team coverage from city hall. first, let's head outside to abc 7 news reporter alyssa harrington. elisa? >> reporter: flowers cover the steps of city hall tonight. mourners are stopping by to leave flowers, candles and letters for ed lee. i spoke to gavin newsom just a few minutes ago. he said you want to live like your eulogy and mayor lee did. he is being remembered for being kind, his humility, his deep love for san francisco. >> ed lee was a real person. he was a person that communicated integrity. a love of life. >> in china, san francisco's first chinese american mayor, he was like a superstar. an icon.

but to everyone we met and everywhere we went, mayor lee was like beyonce with a mustache. >> ed lee had the qualities of a person whom, if you did an interview of all of the ones that i just spoke about, he would be the only one that would be rated appropriately by the head hunters as to who ought to be mayor. all the rest of us would be considered okay. >> i think if there's any legacy of ed, it's a reminder that life is short. and our wisdom is way too limited to win fleeting victories at other people's expenses. ed's life was about fry triumph together. >> he knew that a measure of his success or any public figure's success was not the honors received but the difference that he made in the lives of regular people in our community. >> nothing was too small or too

big for him, from stuffing envelopes to speaking on stage, my dad was happy to do it all. often until late hours in the night. >> just think of this. head of the human rights commission, purchaser of the city, head of the department of public works, chief administrative officer and mayor of the city and county of san francisco. yes, ed lee was an outstanding man. >> people are still stopping by city hall to pay their respects. there was a huge turnout today, so big na the line went around the block. the event actually filled up and so did the overflow rooms over at the san francisco public library. they reached capacity. about 300 people showed up there. i did get a chance to see some other politicians, some athletes. we saw 49ers great joe montana walk in. also former giants slugger barry

bonds. i spoke with reverend norman fong who was born and raised in chinatown and worked closely with mayor ed lee. he was at the hospital when mayor ed lee had his heart attack. >> i remember sometimes he'd sort of grumble that people think he doesn't understand afford abable housing. i told him when we were young activists we probably invented the affordable housing. >> along with the values and principles of mayor lee, long live the humanity basic kind of love that san francisco is supposed to have. >> reporter: mayor lee's wife and daughters arrived via police escort. mourners left flowers on the steps of city hall. there were a couple protesters today. they blamed mayor lee for thousands of evictions. tonight this whole area is lit up. there are a couple fire trucks

leaving now, but-year-old there was a huge flag draped in front of city hall. it's been a tough week for a lot of san fransicans. today they did get a chance to say good-bye. elissa harrington, abc 7 news. >> thank you very much. the mayor had quite a few high profile friends. we caught up with a few of them after the service. >> reporter: it's kind of loud right now. crews are breaking down the chairs and the setup from today's memorial. but from this podium, this was our vantage point to today's celebration of life. what a celebration it was. in addition to friends and family and fellow politicians sharing their stories of what mayor ed lee contributed to san francisco, there were also these really lovely moments of levity with plenty of laughter. he was loved by so many far and wide. from a video recording from musician tony bennett to what acting mayor london breed said, calling him a superstar and a real treat to his fans,

comparing him to beyonce with a mustache. >> ed was an incredibly collaborative, warm, generous person. >> we're having a little bit of difficulty there with dion lim's reporting. just into the newsroom, the medical examiner has officially determined the cause of mayor ed lee's death a heart attack caused by hypertensivive heart disease. if you would like a look back at his career as mayor, head over to abc7news.com. we have other news now. a cooldown is headed to the bay area. taking a live look outside right now from our rooftop camera, it is a crisp evening on san francisco. but in a few days the temperatures will drop probably below freezing in parts of the

bay area. here's meteorologist drew tuma with more. >> we're used to that in the month of december. many places are below that freezing mark. that pattern is coming back once again. along that cooler pattern, we may see our next chance at moisture. it's a quiet night on the bay. yesterday we had white caps. the winds have calmed down. tonight temperatures are falling back into the 50s after a day spent in the 60s, we'll cool off to the 30s and the 40s. but midweek this week the accuweather outlook shows you an invasion of cooler air that sinks south. that storm track is going to finally give us our next chance of rain. time out that next chance of rain and show arrives and how much to expect. >> drew, thanks a lot. in developing news, an off-duty east bay police officer is in custody tonight for firing

his gun inside one of san francisco's most exclusive hotels. >> and for a time he refused to surrender. abc 7 reporter cornell bernard joins us live from outside the four seasons. that's where this all took place. >> reporter: that off-duty police officer is in the hospital. he's undergoing a mental evaluation. he's a veteran of the police force. this bizarre shooting incident left many guests here at the four seasons hotel rattled this morning, many asking why it happened. >> scary. i have a 4-year-old. and i would not expect that to happen here. >> reporter: guests at the four seasons hotel are shocked about reports of gunfire from inside the hotel about 5:00 a.m. sunday. >> a witness that stated there was a male located in the building who was shooting a gun. >> reporter: police say the suspect is an off-duty richmond

police officer. police sources tell abc 7 the officer fired eight rounds from the 12th or 14th floor which was under construction. and with few places for officers to take cover, it took more than 90 minutes to convince the man to surrender, which finally happened at 6:30 a.m. >> he surrendered peacefully. he's currently in our custody, and we have no reports of any injuries. >> reporter: police recovered a handgun belonging to the off-duty cop. the man was a guest at the hotel. other guests were questioned by police. >> detectives, and they're in the stairwells on the floors and they're asking people who are staying here questioning. >> what do they ask? >> if we heard gunshots. >> i'm a little surprised that nobody notified the guests of the hotel that there was a situation like that. >> reporter: the man was transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation. >> we have since placed the officer on administrative leave and we're conducting an

administrative investigation on the incident. >> reporter: a motive to the gunfire is still unknown. in san francisco cornell barnard, abc 7 news. cal's new female chancellor spoke to new grads today. she made a promise that would benefit students and the city of berkeley. plus -- >> christmas morning i was shot seven times.

dozens of guns were surrendered today during a buy back event. officers took some 40 guns off the streets during the event at the richmond civic center. in exchange donors received gift cards worth $50 to $200 depending on what they turned in. one man who surrendered a family rifle was inspired by an event that almost took his life. >> the reason i turned it in was because i was a victim of gun violence. 2015 on christmas morning i was shot seven times by somebody who tried to rob my family. >> my goodness. john chastain says he has recovered from that event. the shooter was arrested the same day.

these recovered weapons will be destroyed. the metal will be melted and turned into public art. congratulations to cal's newest grads today. carol crist addressed about 600 graduates and their families. she talked about making berkeley more accessible to a diverse population and said insufficient student housing is the biggest threat to berkeley. she promised to double the capacity of the system. you know the holidays can be hard for underserved children. that's why this group of people is working so hard to spread holiday cheer. and a cooldown is on the way. drew tuma is up next. for first time since 2014, jimmy g leads the way. career day.

temple where the temple senior group held a holiday toy drive today. >> gifts will be distributed to local children and area charities that help them. many will also go to incarcerated youth at alameda juvenile hall. >> these are the kids that don't get exposed, don't get the toys. on christmas day we go there to the juvenile hall and the jail itself and give the toys to each one of the kids over there. >> he says hundreds of toys will be collected and volunteers will go to juvenile hall bright and early at 7:00 a.m. on christmas day. now your accuweather forecast with drew tuma. >> it's been more than two weeks since we've seen our last rain move through the region. our next chance, though, will be coming up in the next couple days. live doppler 7. we're tracking changes to our atmosphere. tonight, though, it's more of the same of what we've seen for the month of december. a quiet night with clear sky.

all along the embarcadero from the rooftop camera, you have the lights of the beautiful bay bridge twinkling. conditions are calm. vastly different than this time last night. our winds were gusting, 30, 40 miles per hour this time last night. much different out there tonight. look at the winds, most spots are reporting calm conditions if not winds less than 10 miles per hour. those winds will remain on the light side in the foreseeable future. temperature wise we've made it to the mid and upper 60s today. a mild december day. tonight we're fall can back to the 60s. 54 in santa rosa. right now fairfield the only spot right now in the 40s at 46 degrees. tonight with those light winds the clear skies overhead kind of a recipe for a cool night especially away from the coast. a lot of spots inland. and in the north bay especially dropping into the 40s. 36 in vallejo. dropped about 33 in antioch, a little bit more mild in terms of

air temperature as you get closer to the bay waers. we'll drop to 44 overnight in san francisco. a cooler morning compared to this morning. inland we're in the 30s. around the bay in the low 40s. but with the sunshine in full effect really effective at warming us up again. by 4:00 most spots away from the coast are going into the 60s. 62 the high in richmond tomorrow. about 64 in oakland, 63 in palo alto, santa rosa up to 68 degrees. san francisco a high of 62 for your monday. but changes are coming. a pattern we've been in has been centered over much of the west coast. bringing sunny skies and breezy conditions. that also has meant the storm track is well to our north. but that ridge is going to slowly break down. right here, this is our next storm system we're tracking that will sink south and move into our next of the woods wednesday morning. the storm impact scale we use here exclusively at abc 7 shows

you what to expect with the upcoming storm. the one coming wednesday morning is a one. it's a light system. but it's our next best chance of seeing any moisture in the forecast. early wednesday morning, 1:00, showers in the north bay. a quick moving system, unfortunately. by 4:00, it's already in the south bay and by 8:00, we expect it to be out of our neck of the woods. it's not a soaker by any means. for the next seven days, pretty mild day tomorrow, increasing clouds on tuesday. there's that morning shower on wednesday. and then we're cooling off as winter arrives here on thursday with dry conditions into next weekend. now abc 7 sports with mike shumann. >> 49ers are on a roll. with the titans in town. he became the first niner quarterback to win his first three starts since the merger in 1970. santa's helpers came to town in
