laughter just like ed lee himself. ♪ he's got the whole world in his hands ♪ >> reporter: if the music cass any indication, mayor lee's memorial was a celebration of life. >> it was really fitting for someone who i regard as a good friend. >> reporter: along with stories of his accomplishments -- >> our unemployment rate o'clock had been nearly 10% when he took over, is down to 2.7% today. >> reporter: his impact on our community. recollections from his daughters tonya and briana of the man they called dad. >> sometimes it was through his texts that he would send us as he went about his day, like a bitmoji of him in a warriors jersey doing a slam dunk. >> all of those things represented a picture of a true, wonderful human being who should not have died. >> reporter: so many remembered ed lee's smile and love of music.

>> reporter: the line for san francisco mayor ed lee's celebration of life wrapped around the block. some faces were familiar, like giants slugger barry bonds, 49ers hall of famer joe montana. family members arrived via police escort. >> to have the personality of a politician, not at all. >> reporter: reverend fong with the china town community development center rushed to the hospital so fast the night 11 collapsed he got pulled over. >> big loss for san francisco. i don't know how it's going to carry out. but i hope the city can continue to do justice, care about the homeless, care about people that don't have avoice. >> reporter: former san francisco mayor frank jordan was touched by the outpouring of support. >> i am proud to be here with all the other mayors of san francisco and the people of our city who have come forward in such a warm, friendly way. >> it's still tough. i was in the office, all his personal belongings are gone --

passengers, because we know that they have had a very, very long and difficult day. >> reporter: up to 100 planes stuck on the tarmac, hundreds more canceled or delayed. >> i think for airlines that are headquartered in atlanta like delta, it's going to have a cascaded effect, it's going to take a long time to figure out crew schedules, putting the airplanes in the right place. >> reporter: the power outage creating a ripple effect, delaying more than 2,000 flights across the country. danya bacchus, abc news, atlanta. >> at san francisco international, passengers bound for atlanta had to reclaim their checked bags because of cancelations. delta operates seven flights a day to its hub there, today six of those seven canceled. one passenger says she was rerouted to minneapolis and st. louis to get to her final destination. >> it's a very complicated situation when you need to change flights with a cancelation, the problem in atlanta. >>united airlines flies twice a

day to atlanta from sfo, both those flights were canceled tomorrow. tomorrow, delta has canceled 300 monday flights. developing news from southern california where exhausted firefighters are entering their second week battling the growing thomas fire, 270,000 acres, an area larger than the size of new york city and boston combined. flames are consuming land in both ventura and santa barbara counties. evacuations remain in effect for the wealthy enclave of montecito, home to celebrities like oprah and ellen degeneres. the fire is 45% contained. north bay, a father and 6-year-old son drowned at a beach. the russian river fire department says the boy and another child were swept into the water at about 2:15 at goat rock state beach. the father went into the water to try to rescue them. the other child made it safely out of the water on his own. the names of the father and son who drowned have not been

released. an off-duty east bay police officer is under arrest for firing his gun inside one of san francisco's most exclusive hotels. for a time refused to give himself up. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard spoke to some shaken hotel guests. >> it's scary. i have a 4-year-old. i would not expect that to happen here. >> reporter: guests at the four seasons shocked about reports of gunfire from inside the hotel. about 5:00 a.m. sunday. >> a witness who stated that there was a male located in the building who was shooting a gun. >> reporter: police say the suspect is an off-duty richmond police officer. police sources tell abc 7 the off officer fired eight rounds from the 12th or 14th floor, which was under construction, and with few places for officers to take cover the took over 90 minutes to convince the man to surrender which finally happened at 6:30 a.m. >> he surrendered peacefully. he's currently in our custody. and we have no reports of any injuries. >> reporter: police recovered a

handgun belonging to the off-duty cop. the four seasons general manager confirms to abc 7 news the man was a guest at the hotel. other guests were questioned by police. >> detectives, going down the stairwells and the floors, and they're asking people standard questions. >> what are they asking? >> about if we heard gunshots. >> i'm a very loyal four seasons guest. a little surprised nobody notified the guests at the hotel that there was a situation like that. >> reporter: the man was transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation. >> we have placed the officer on administrative leave. and we're conducting an administrative investigation on the incident. >> reporter: a motive for the gunfire is still unknown. much more ahead on abc 7 news at 11:00, including finding comfort in community. >> the reason i turned it in is because i was a victim of gun violence. 2015, christmas morning, i was shot seven times by somebody who

take a good look at this video posted by the san ramon police department. police say what you see being fired out of the car are flares. they have reports of at least five homes being hit by flares between 10:00 last night and 1:00 this morning. we went by homes that were hit, most of the damage was fairly minor. we saw burn marks on a wall and a few boards from a fence that also caught fire. the vehicle involved is described as possibly an older nissan sentra. residents of coffee park did their best to get into the holiday spirit. light snow and santa helped give victims from october's fires christmas cheer. >> abc 7 news reporter lilian kim has the story from santa

rosa. >> reporter: a patch of snow put smiles on the children's faces. so did a visit with santa. coffey park residents who lost everything in the fires returned to their neighborhood for holiday fun. and for many, it was bittersweet. >> it makes me sad too. to not have my traditions that we've had before. but it's fun to see my kids playing in the snow. having fun. >> reporter: organizers call this coffey park celebration of hope. an event made possible by the generosity of others. from the food to the toys, everything was donated. people also donated christmas trees. they were given to anyone who wanted to put one on their property. so far, about 140 of them have been given away. which helped transform the fire-ravaged subdivision into a place filled with holiday spirit. >> you like christmas trees, music, you invite people out and this is what you get. the neighborhood is alive again.

the first time after the fires, the neighborhood is alive. >> reporter: travis garrison lost his home and so did two of his family members. seeing the neighborhood come together for this holiday event reminded him why he wants to come back. >> i don't want to leave this community. i've been here 30 years. i grew up here. i'd love to have a family and raise them right up here in coffey park. >> reporter: reconstruction for some could begin as early as spring. for now residents are finding comfort spreading holiday cheer with their old neighbors. two residents of napa county's atlas peak met the heroes who saved their lives. >> philip dahan and linda sawa stopped by the california highway patrol napa air operations hangar to meet officers gavin and lowe. the couple were surrounded by flames and had to be rescued by the helicopter crew. the the officers risked their own lives to land and airlift both to safety. he's being investigated for claims of workplace misconduct,

including sexual harassment. tonight the owner of the carolina panthers nfl franchise says he's selling the team. according to "sports illustrated," jerry richardson and the panthers made confidential payouts to at least four former team employees. richardson says he won't begin the sale process until the last game of this season. potential owners are already lining up. maybe the "p" in p. diddy stands for panthers. "i would like to buy the panthers, spread the word." as he displayed richardson's statement about selling the team combs said he would hire colin kaepernick immediately. later the warriors' steph curry, who grew up in charlotte and is an avid panthers fan, tweeted "i want in." combs and curry would become the first african-americans to own an nfl team but they'll need more investors, "forbes" pegs the value of the panthers franchise at $1 billion. >> you can just make up for the rest. >> oh, yeah. i make that amount in my basement every day.

good evening. i'm eric thomas. >> i'm deon limb. tonight a celebration of life was held for late san francisco mayor ed lee. family, friends, colleagues, and constituents packed city hall this afternoon for an emotional memorial service in his honor. the event was somber and at times full of life and laughter, just like the late mayor. an off-duty richmond police officer is on leave after he fired his gun inside the four seasons hotel in san francisco leading to a standoff. no one was hurt but the man fired eight shots from the 12th or 14 floors, which were under destruction. travelers who fly in or out of atlanta's hartsfield-jackson airport will face another day of delays tomorrow. the busiest airport in the world was shut down today by a massive

power outage. electricity was restored late tonight, but not before the cancelation of hundreds of flights. developing news out of southern california where the thomas fire raging on, threatening even more homes tonight. >> it's the third-largest wildfire in california history, and firefighters are bracing for winds to pick up and fan the flames even more. >> abc's marci gonzalez is on the fire lines in santa barbara county. >> reporter: fire crews waging an all-out war against this massive, unrelenting wildfire. now the size of new york city. crews climbing the california hills with chainsaws, axes, and shovels, desperately trying to get the upper hand. >> we're hitting this thing with everything. >> reporter: the inferno burning nearly two weeks. the wall of smoke at one point so thick it nearly blacked out the sun. nearly 800 homes destroyed. several more lost over the weekend as wind gusts topped 60 miles an hour. you can see just how powerful the wind is here. it brought the flames in so quickly, the fire crews say they

christmas. now officials expect this firefight to continue through the new year. president trump said today he has no plans to fire special counsel robert muler on a day when the president's transition team claims that mueller improperly obtained e-mails as part of the investigation into russian influence in the 2016 election. thousands of e-mails were provided to mueller by the general services administration, a transition team says the communications are private. experts say any government account belongs to the public. >> they're spending millions and millions of dollars. there is absolutely no collusion. >> i think republicans should end their concerted effort to undermine the credibility of the mueller investigation. >> the gsa insists they did nothing improper. republicans in congress are confident they have the votes to pass an historic tax bill this week. the bill lowers the tax rate and the wealthy but doubles the standard deduction for the

post offices in the bay area were open today to help customers with the holiday rush. abc 7 news was at the sunnyvale post office on east java drive. nearly 3 billion pieces of mail, including greeting cards and packages, are expected to be processed and delivered next week. the busiest day of the year is now the busiest week of the year thanks to more online shopping. in tennessee, a high school football team is turning the tables on a beloved coach who's given so much. >> here's abc news reporter linsey davis. >> reporter: his real name is norsallis black. everyone calls him coach squeaky. he's coached football and other sports at tennessee high school in bristol, tennessee. he does laundry, sets up food, and at every game he's right
