at abc7news.com or the abc 7 news app. we are tracking the crippling impact that power outage at hartsfield-jackson international airport is having on the rest of the country including here in the bay area. for nearly 11 hours the power was out and that did include about a half dozen here at sfo. we checked flight aware.com. i want to show you why this is having such a big impact. here is what it looked like when the lights went out in atlanta. power was restored just before midnight local time. the ripple effect could last to a week.

a fire in the airport's underground facility is what caused the fire and the backup system there was also damaged. the city's mayor says terror cannot be ruled out. 5:04 now. a regional director with the california democratic party is under investigation for sexual assault. he submitted his resignaton after a 23-year-old woman reported he sexually assaulted her last year. that's according to the "l.a. times." this is the twitter page. the alleged incident took place in a public area at the airport/hotel during a convention in which women were discussing sexual harassment prevention in the me too movement. he did not acknowledge any wrongdoing and said he is stepping down to prevent any distraction to the party. this is part of sacred heart's program to help families.

reporter matt keller is live for us in san jose. matt? >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. check out this mountain of food boxes we have here at sacred heart community service in san jose. i'm 6'2". this is me jumping up -- that's really not me jumping. i wasn't that great in basketball. a mountain of food boxes there and the volunteers spent all weekend getting these ready and they will be going out in san jose today. now check out this video of years past when they were giving out these food boxes to the people here at sacred heart. 3,000 families will be getting a similar box with either a turkey or a ham. the reason sacred heart does this is so families can continue their holiday tradition. >> we want to make sure people can celebrate the holidays with food, toys for the kids, and not have to use a limited amount of money that they have to pay for these things. >> families will return for the

toy giveaway. 6,200 kids are signed up. parents will be able to pick out gifts, books, and toys. sacred heart is still short toys. this is one of their donations bins. we have a link where you can learn how to donate or volunteer. i promise i'm not going to jump anymore for these food boxes. we all have to check our vertical leap here for in the studio. back to you. >> i have a couple inches on you so that's the only thing that would help. certainly not my basketball skills. matt, thank you. happening today talks could end an ongoing labor dispute. negotiators for the city of oakland and local 1021 are scheduled to attend mediation sessions today. 3,000 oakland city workers went back to work last week after suspending their seven-day strike without a contract agreement. there's been some progress between the city and workers. two labor groups have ratified their agreements. they will be presented to the city council for final ratification as early as this

week. >> this morning president trump has a message for special counsel robert mueller. you're not fired. the president added he is very upset because he believes mueller wrongly obtained e-mails in the russia investigation. the general services administration provided thousands of e-mails to mueller. president trump's team says the communications are private. experts say any government account belongs to the public. >> they're spending millions and millions of dollars. there is absolutely no collusion. >> i think republicans should end their concerted effort to undermine the credibility of the mueller investigation. >> the gsa insists it did nothing improper. let's talk temperatures. as reggie mentioned eight minutes ago it's cooler in many areas. we have 37 in palo alto and napa, 35 in santa rosa. as you head down to menlo park and san ramone and fairfield,

it's back and it's about time. the storm impact scale for wednesday. a sneak peek, a preview of what is coming our way. unfortunately less than a quarter of an inch because it's a fast moving system. a little breezy. i'll show that you in about four minutes. in an exclusive interview with abc news we are hearing from suspended talk show tavis smiley. after an independent investigation that smiley claims he knew nothing about, and this morning on "gma" smiley was adamant the relations were consensual. he added he was never given the

opportunity to prove it. >> my attorneys contacted the pbs investigators and offered to have me come talk to them whenever they wanted. they did this for weeks and refused to talk to me. they were prepared to close this investigation without talking to me. only under threat of lawsuit did they agree to sit down and talk to me. they talked to me for three hours and never told me who the accusers were, what the allegations were, never allowed me to provide information. > is it important for you to know? >> coming up, smiley answers the question about whether or not he will return to pbs if he is cleared of any wrongdoing. reggie? >> thank you, jessica. this next story is so heartbreaking. marquis goodwin played through another tragedy this week. revealed his father died earlier this week. he ended up having the best game of his career catching ten passers in a 49ers win. five weeks ago goodwin took the field hours after his unborn baby died. he had a long touchdown

reception helping the 49ers win their first game of the season. >> it's been a hard year for him. people who call coffey park home did their best to get into the spirit. >> lights and snow, a little bit of christmas cheer. lilian kim has the story from santa rosa. >> reporter: a patch of snow quickly put smiles on the children's faces, and so did a visit with santa. coffey park residents returned to their neighborhood for fun. it was bittersweet. >> it makes me sad to not have my traditions we've had before. but it's fun to see my kids playing in the snow and having fun. >> reporter: organizers called this coffey park celebration of hope, an event made possible by the generosity of others from the food to the toys everything was donated. people also donated christmas trees. they were given to anyone who

wanted to put one on their property. which helped transform the subdivision into a place filled with holiday spirit. >> you have christmas trees, christmas music, invite people out and this is what you get. the neighborhood is alive again. the neighborhood is alive. >> reporter: travis garrison lost his home and so did two of his family members. it reminded him why he wants to come back. >> i've been here for 30 years and grew up here. >> reporter: reconstruction for some could begin as early as spring. residents are finding comfort spreading holiday cheer with their old neighbors. in santa rosa, lilian kim, abc 7 news. people are wasting hours of their life in traffic and now a multibillion dollar mega measure is hoping to fix that.

this rendering of a southern crossing would carry more than just cars. one of several transportation as part of a me ga funding measure. a toll increase to pay for improvements. business leaders are behind the effort. they've already hired a strategist for public outreach. over the weekend "the new york times" had a bombshell story about the pentagon and their top-secret ufo investigation. it turns out that program is only the beginning. a singer revealed he was working with the man who ran the with the man who ran the pentagon's ufo program. he claims the government has not only known about the existence but has been experimenting with alien technologies. >> how do we continue the

end. you're definitely out there by yourself. and then tonight mid to upper 30s in our inland valleys, fremont and palo alto. morgan hill and low to mid-40s the rest of the bay. along the coast in san francisco about 47 degrees. so 7:00 tuesday evening. winding down the evening commute with increasing clouds and rain in ukiah. the north bay gets rain from 8:00 to midnight. and then from midnight to 4:00, 4:00 to 7:00 it moves from the bay and out of the bay. that's a quick-moving system and that's why our rainfall totals will be oh, so light. 7:00 in the evening, nothing. by the time we get to midnight .01 the coast into the north bay wake up at 4:00 in the morning, everybody is wet. by the end of the storm at 9:00 we have about .15 of an inch of rain. a one on the storm impact scale. sue? back to the bay bridge, metering lights were turned on

at 5:15 so earlier than usual. what's going on? we had an accident past t.i. in the slow lane. slow into the tunnel. they should have had that pushed off by now. i'll check back but expect some delays on the bay bridge this morning. they had to do a traffic break from 680 westbound highway 420 get this accident pushed to the shoulder. westbound near morello is not slowing things down. and we do have some commuter alerts for golden gate ferry. a little bit of a time change. the 8:45 and 9:15 boats are at 8:50 and 9:20 so five minutes later, fortunately not earlier. heads up for that. 44 b.a.r.t. trains running on time and your ace trains are on schedule as well. thank you, sue. dozens of skiers get hurt after a chair lift malfunctions at a pennsylvania resort.

here's kenneddis gibson. >> 20 people pinned. >> reporter: the terrifying moments for a group of skiers stuck dangling dangerously from their ski lifts at least 20 feet in the air. take a look at these photos. police say a malfunction occurred at pennsylvania's ski resort. the resort telling abc news one of its chairs slipped along and slipped backwards causing a domino effect sandwiching passengers, trapping them between the chairs. >> my jaw dropped. i sat there for a while and watched everybody and was watching the emergency personnel come up. they were on the scene right away. >> reporter: five people were injured, rescues taking up to two hours to lower them to the ground one by one. at 7:00 more on the accident. i'm kendis gibson, abc news, new york. >> nightmare. >> see, that's why i don't ski. >> i don't blame you. up next the seven things you

should recover on the upper deck. a nice ride this hour. less than 20 minutes. if your travels take from you san rafael into san francisco, under 20 minutes there as well with a follow free golden gate bridge. it is a holiday travel nightmare that's far from over. the lights are back on at atlanta's hartsfield-jackson international airport but the headache continues. in fact here is a live look at the world's busiest airport. and this morning there are still hundreds of delays and cancellation cancellations including some here. tiffany wilson is at sfo with more. tiffany? >> reporter: good morning, jessica. it is the holiday travel season, already very busy here at sfo. if you look up at the board there are several flights already canceled going to atlanta, the 6:05 and 10:25.

however there are a couple of flights getting out that are scheduled on time heading to atlanta. according to flight aware more than 400 flights canceled today. seven canceled from sfo alone. this could not have come at a worst time. we're in the middle of a record breaking holiday travel season. 5 is million people are expected to fly over the holidays. rebooking all of them, passengers on canceled flights, passengers on canceled flights, is going to be a nightmare. >> we didn't really know what was happening. that's a little bit annoying. i'm just glad that we'll get some food and sleep and hopefully get through this line soon. >> reporter: georgia power believes the outage was caused by a fire in an underground electrical facility. atlanta's mayor says the fire was so strong it knocked out the

redundant system. delta says everyone flying through atlanta needs to check their status before heading to the airport. live at sfo, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. hundreds packed san francisco city hall to say good-bye to mayor ed lee. >> outside city hall the memorial to the late mayor continues to grow with many people leaving flowers and mementoes. lee's two daughters spoke at his celebration of life. they talked about how their dad taught them community service at a young age. >> he showed me what it was to work alongside others to get something done. nothing was too small or too big for him from stuffing envelopes to speaking on stage, my dad was happy to do it all. often until late hours in the night. >> lee's fellow politicians shared stories offist accomplishments and impact on the community. >> giants great barry bonds was

among the many at the service. mayors shared memories including former oakland mayor jean quan. >> i remember sometimes he would grumble people will think he doesn't understand affordable housing. as i was telling him that when we were young activists we actually probably invented the affordable housing that saved chinatown. >> the late mayor's family was among the first to arrive at city hall. flowers were still being left on the steps in tribute. >> and the tributes honoring mayor lee continue this week. there will be a community candlelight vigil in chinatown happening thursday night at 5:00 at portsmouth square. if you want to look back at mayor ed lee's career, head to our website abc7news.com. it's 5:34 now. on to developing news from southern california where exhausted firefighters battling the massive thomas fire are getting a small break today taking advantage of calmer winds to mount an attack on flames

threatening montecito. the fire has grown to 270,000 acres. evacuation efforts remain in effect, home for celebrities like oprah and ellen degeneres. and fire crews from fairfield are among the 8,000 on the front lines of the thomas fire. this video showing exactly what they're up against. firefighters played a big role in battling the north bay fires in october. a firefighter who died battling the thomas fire was laid to rest. an autopsy showed cory iverson died thursday from burns and smoke inhalation. his funeral procession spanned five counties from ventura to san diego county yesterday. iverson was stationed in san diego. police in the east bay are searching for the people who fired flares at several homes and here is the video posted by the san ramon police department.

you'll see it happen right there. police say those are the flares. they have reports of at least five homes being hit between 10:00 saturday night and 1:00 yesterday morning. abc went by a couple homes hit. you can see the damage. most it have is minor. we saw burn marks on a wall and a few boards from a fence that caught fire. the vehicle involved described as possibly an older nissan sentra. an off-duty richmond police officer is under investigation for firing his gun inside of one of san francisco's most exclusive hotels. he was taken into custody yesterday outside of the four seasons on market street. abc 7 news learned the officer fired eight rounds on the 12th or 14th floor. no one was hurt. the officer was a guest. guests say that they were surprised that no one let them know what was happening and that there were no shelter in place warnings. >> more than 100 freeway shootings in the bay area just since the start of 2015. east bay leaders will take the next step to curb this dangerous

crime. the city of pittsburgh will discuss installing a freeway camera system today. 36 of the 100 freeway shootings in the last two years have taken place in contra costa county. the freeway camera system expected to cost $3.5 million. a new high-speed ferry may carry passengers. golden gate is negotiating the vessel on the east coast now that can carry up to 400 passengers at a speed of 37 miles an hour. golden gate plans a major overhaul of its seven-boat fleet and would like the new boat as a backup. happening today if you live in san jose you can start reporting illegal fireworks this holiday season. it's part of the fireworks ordinance work plan. a hotline is available today through the new year. and in july for independence day. our media partner reports that anyone filing a fireworks complaint online will be required to submit evidence and fines freezing fireworks start at $500.

since we last talked temperatures are now 18 degrees cooler in some areas than they were yesterday. places like napa and livermore. 11 degrees cooler in places like san jose and also oakland and santa rosa. 10 degrees cooler. where does that put us? down to your neighborhoods in san francisco, about 45. we have 46 in potrero hills, sunny side, and a merced. 50 in the financial. 48 in the mission and castro. 49 right now downtown. look at that, 45 in daly city. 44 in belmont. 48 in richmond. 40 in san leandro and a look at the san mateo bridge looking busy right here. we'll find out how the rest of the commute is with sue. clean air all day for mass transit and dry on the roads all day today. a look at wednesday. pick up tuesday night with the cold front. up to 22 miles an hour.

look at this, 50 in tahoe. but that's going to be the warmest day this week. increasing clouds tomorrow. a quick burst of 3-6 inches of snow and very windy wednesday and then it remains cooler than average and dry. natasha? >> thank you so much, mike. the house and senate are set to vote on the massive republican tax reform bill. republicans are confident they have the votes they need to send the bill to the president's desk before christmas. arlette saenz is in washington. >> reporter: president trump says republicans are days away from delivering the biggest christmas gift for the american people. >> this i going to be one of the great gifts to the middle income people. >> reporter: who exactly will benefit from the gop tax plan? the bill slashes the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, a win for big business. for the wealthy, it lowers the top tax rate from 39% to 37%. and for middle-class american, the plan doubles the standard deduction but caps combined state and local income and property tax deductions at

$10,000. previous analysis of the senate plan found americans earning $75,000 or less would pay more in taxes within ten years. >> it's a huge giveaway to gig corporations. >> reporter: it eliminates the obamacare mandate requiring individuals purchase insurance. congressional analysis says that could lead to 13 million more people uninsured. >> i'm confident we'll pass this bill probably on tuesday. >> reporter: but one key gop senator won't be on hand. senator john mccain returned home to arizona where he'll undergo physical therapy and rehab at the mayo clinic. and doctors say senator mccain is responding well to his treatment for brain cancer. he returned to arizona yesterday after being treated in washington for a viral infection. his family says the senator appreciates the outpouring of support he has received. people in the north bay came together to remember the animals who died in the fires. it was an opportunity for pet owners and animal lovers to share stories about their loss. organizers felt it was important
