coming up good morning, america. breaking news in that deadly train derailment. authorities now reveal the amtrak train that flew off the tracks was traveling 50 miles over the speed limit. >> amtrak 501. emergency, emergency, emergency. we are on the ground. >> at least three people killed. dozens injured. the investigation and the hero eagle scout who rushed in to help. decision day. republicans just hours away from passing their tax overhaul. president trump closing in on his first major legislative victory. the new report, who really wins and who loses? new trouble for the palin family. sarah palin's son now behind bars, accused of severely beating his father, todd. sarah palin forced to call 911, blaming medication. what really happened inside the

former vp candidate's home. and severe winds cause this massive stage collapse, killing a deejay, toppling this structure. debris crashed to the ground with thousands of concertgoers watching in horror. and good morning, america. we want to get right to that breaking news about that deadly train derailment in washington state. look at that scene yesterday, height of rush hour. trains dangling over one of the busiest interstates in the northwest, and now we know that the train was traveling at 80 miles an hour in a 30-mile-per-hour zone. >> yeah, it was the inaugural run on that particular track. you've seen the devastation from the exterior. we want to take you inside some of those cabins. these are the pictures from one of the survivors. it is incredible. these pictures are just incredible. it's crazy to think that some people survived this after
7:02 am
looking at some of those photos. >> absolutely. so fortunate, so lucky. here's what we know at this hour. at least three people were killed. more than 90 injured. 13 cars jumped the tracks on its first run. and it was the new route for the train and we want to go to abc's clayton sandell on the scene in dupont, washington, who has more. good morning, clayton. >> reporter: good morning, michael. you can see behind me here this is still a very active scene. we want to show you, you can see there is a big yellow crane right now that's beginning to remove train cars from the overpass at this hour. a major interstate below still shut down as investigators try and figure out what made this train go off the tracks. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: it was supposed to be a triumphant day, but in an instant amtrak 501's inaugural run on a faster track turned into tragedy. >> there was a lot of metal and a lot of screeching and a lot of just being turned around. >> reporter: this morning investigators are on the scene trying to determine what caused the passenger train to hurdle off an overpass. >> the train was going at 80 -- about 80 miles per hour.
7:03 am
>> reporter: in a 30-mile-per-hour zone, right? >> that's right. >> reporter: railcars crashing into vehicles on the interstate below. officials say so far three people from the train were killed. over 100 injured. >> it was wet, it was cold. we had downed power lines. we also had downed trees. it was very slippery and there's no access to this scene except from i-5 so our responders were climbing up and down this hill trying to get to those victims. >> reporter: amtrak cascades train 501 left seattle just after 6:00 a.m. 85 passengers and crew on board. at 7:34 a.m., a locomotive and 12 cars careening off both sides of the overpass. >> amtrak 501, emergency, emergency, emergency, we are on the ground. >> is everybody okay? >> i'm still figuring that out. we got cars everywhere and down onto the highway. >> reporter: the impact of the crash caused passengers to fly out of their seats. >> people were flying, you know, you're like, oh, my god. this is real, and you start to
7:04 am
see the roof kind of peel, and you are, like, is this ever going to stop? >> it was almost like being inside a dryer machine, shook completely to the other side of the train and then back. >> reporter: when dan and his girlfriend came across the accident scene, the eagle scout sprang into action. >> there was injured people walking all over the place in shock and i was like, dude, somebody needs to just be a leader, sort of organize. one of the trains had tipped upside down and kind of spilled the passengers out, and then the train came down on top of them. that's where i was like, whoa, this is gnarly and those victims were pretty badly beat up and even when people were pin under the train, i grabbed the dude's hand and i was, like, rubbing his back and i'm so impressed by you, you're a champion, and just talking to him. >> reporter: now, one safety system that might have made a difference is called positive train control or ptc. you can think of it like an autopilot. if the train is going too fast, ptc automatically slows you down but officials say even though ptc was installed on these
7:05 am
tracks, it had not yet been activated. george. >> big problem there. clayton, thanks very much. i want to bring in chris carnes now. he is from the pierce county transit advisory board, and he was on that train yesterday. and chris, thank you for joining us this morning. you knew the train was going fast. you were tweeting about it. >> yes, we were passing traffic as we were going along the highway. >> and you even said you thought you were going around 79 miles an hour. did you think it was too fast? >> i -- well, we had never been -- there's been no passenger traffic -- travel on this route before so it -- we didn't really have any experience about it. >> so when was the first moment you knew something was wrong? >> so, everything seemed to be going fine up until the point where there's this turn where you have to go on an overpass over i-5 and so it really only what we felt was for a split second we felt a little -- we
7:06 am
felt like we were going into a turn but then we heard -- felt some jittering and the next thing we knew, we were flying off the rails and then down an embankment. >> there was no slowing down as you head into that curve? >> it -- i don't recall any. >> so you say you went down into an embankment. what kind of fall was that for you? >> for me it was -- we were just sort of catapulted into the seats in front of us. >> and you look okay right now. you had no injuries. what about everybody else in the car? >> most -- most of the passengers in our car had only minor injuries. there was one person who in the car in front of us, they were catapulted to the front of the car and they were pretty badly injured. they were unconscious but still breathing. >> so you're tilted on this embankment. how did you get out?
7:07 am
>> so, we -- at first we tried the emergency door but that wouldn't budge because the train car had been crumpled and so what we had to do was we pulled out the strap -- the string around the emergency window and we kicked that out. >> were people panicked, screaming, crying, calm? >> no, there were -- there were people screaming behind us in the car behind but, there was no way we could access them. >> and what could you see of the cars -- i think they were ahead of you -- that actually went over the overpass? could you see that at all? >> yeah, so the cars that -- we were on the other side so couldn't see the cars that went over the overpass. but what i could see from the window was we had disconnected from the other -- the back portion of the train and i could see that someone had been catapulted from the train onto the ground. >> just an unimaginable scene but we're glad you're okay, chris.
7:08 am
thanks for sharing your story this morning. >> thank you. >> paula. we want to move to washington. it is decision day on capitol hill for the republicans. $1.5 trillion tax bill. president trump is on the cusp of getting his first major legislative victory, and our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce is on capitol hill for us with the very latest. good morning to you, mary. >> reporter: good morning, paula. well, the final votes are just hours away. republicans poised for that first major victory, but will it be a win for the american people? republicans and the president insist this bill is aimed at the middle class, but a new analysis shows the long-term benefits will actually go to the rich. after the first decade the report finds the wealthiest americans would receive a tax cut while 70% of middle income americans would see their taxes go up and the president and his family could stand to benefit personally from tax cuts for the wealthy down from more than 39% to 37% and a provision of this bill that is aimed at benefitting certain owners of
7:09 am
businesses like commercial real estate firms. >> okay, so, mary, we've been hearing the republicans have the vote even without senator john mccain who is recovering from cancer treatment. but how confident should they be right now? >> reporter: well, paula, there have been protesters up here on the hill trying to convince republicans not to do this but to no avail. right now they do have the votes in the senate right now. there's not a single republican no vote. there are a handful of moderate republicans in the house who oppose this but, that is not enough to block this bill. this tax bill appears to be headed for the president's desk, paula. >> all right, mary bruce reporting from capitol hill. thank you very much. george. also breaking this morning the white house calling on north korea formally blaming kim jong-un for that crippling ransomware attack last may that affected hundreds of thousands of computers around the world. our senior justice correspondent, pierre thomas, is in washington with the latest. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: george, good morning. the u.s. is blaming north korea for a cyber attack which paralyzed hundreds of thousands of computers in companies and homes worldwide.
7:10 am
in an op-ed release last night, thomas bossert writes, the attack was widespread and cost billions. north korea is directly responsible. it's not the first time. george, you remember in 2014 the u.s. accused north korea of hacking sony pictures for an unflattering movie about their dictator. bossert is calling on the international community to improve cybersecurity, and we could see the u.s. look to improve more sanctions. this latest salvo is likely to add to the ongoing tension with north korea, george. >> it certainly will. let's talk about it more now with cecilia vega and the editor in chief of " john avlon. let's pick up where pierre left
7:11 am
off, the white house calling for new sanctions directly blaming north korea. quite a contrast from the way the president deals with the russian meddling and cyber attacks. >> it's stark. the administration is being tough and clear-eyed, aggressive, but in yesterday's strategic document, the president side-steps the issue of russia and their incursions in american elections. and his cabinet is hawkish but the president remains fundamentally uncomfortable so the contrast is striking. >> cecilia, no question this is the biggest legislative victory yet for the president. good way for him to end the year. >> reporter: yeah, certainly, and they are poised for a big celebration when this actually happens. he's actually tweeting about it this morning. george, take a look. he just put this out on twitter. he says the bill's impact to the economy is not totally understood and appreciated. quote, biggest tax cuts and reform ever passed. enjoy and create many beautiful jobs. spoken like president trump there. but fact checkers agree this isn't actually the biggest tax cut ever passed. he is poised for a big celebration, but this is dangerous political territory. there are a lot of polls out there that show that a number of americans, more than half of americans disagree with this plan, george, and two-thirds of them say that it will benefit the rich over the middle class. >> yeah, let's bring that to john avlon. this is a tax cut. yet in some ways it's more unpopular than tax increases have been in the past. will that matter? >> that's unusual.
7:12 am
everyone loves a tax cut. tax hikes are tough to get through, but the math here is upside down. this has been sold as a middle class tax bill and simplification. it is a big political win for republicans and the president but doesn't deliver on those two promises. >> that's what democrats are hoping for come november in the mid-term elections. meantime, cecilia, the russia investigation continues to hang over the president. the white house hoping this week that some of that cloud may be lifted. they've scheduled this meeting between the white house lawyers and special counsel robert mueller's team. >> reporter: yeah, and this is a pretty standard meeting from what we understand. the lawyers want to get a sense of where this case stands. they likely want to know whether president trump himself is under investigation. they've had to -- lawyers have had to change what they are telling the president behind closed doors. they had initially told him would be done by thanksgiving. and then christmas and now pushed it back and wrapped early into next year. we know it's expected to go well into 2018. >> is the president braced for that, cecilia? that's the question.
7:13 am
>> that is the question, george. he has long said this is a witch-hunt. we hear him repeatedly say that they've done nothing wrong here so that certainly is the standard line, but, look, this is a cloud hanging over this white house. there is absolutely no doubt about that. they cannot shake this and want to focus on tax reform, focus on the agenda going forward in 2018 but these questions are still hitting them hard. >> john, it's been reported that the white house is hoping for a letter of exoneration from the special counsel. that's unlikely to come any time soon and the big question does the special counsel want to talk to the president? >> that is going to be one of the big moments. that's not how it works. you don't get an assurance of a letter of exoneration to allow everything to go forward. the investigation will go forward. the question is whether they'll interview the president will be key. but this thing is vast and fast-moving. if the white house needs to calm the president down by promises that he's off the hook, they're going to be sorely disappointed. coal in that stocking for christmas. >> thanks very much. paula. thanks, george. we want to move to breaking news

overseas. police in the uk have foiled a christmas terror attack making arrests this morning. our senior foreign correspondent ian pannell has the latest from london. ian, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, paula. well, what we're hearing is early this morning police in northern england searched a number of properties in two towns, four men aged between 22 and 41 have been arrested on suspicion of plotting a terror attack. a police spokesperson telling abc news it was planned on a venue connected with christmas celebrations, and it was foiled at an advanced stage. no further details of what the target was or where but we know that the searches are going on in the area. this comes on the one-year anniversary on the attack on the berlin christmas markets that left 12 dead and somber reminder that the threat of more attacks seems undiminished. paula. >> great that they foiled it. ian, thanks for reporting. michael. thank you, paula. back here at home, there are new concerns about holiday travel as millions prepare to hit the road and sky. ginger, you're watching two storm systems this morning, and what are you seeing?
