we've been seeing the winds shaking our camera. >> some wet roads this morning and many other areas as you start your day. we have a few showers and that will be the case throughout the morning commute. you may be able to squeeze another tenth of an inch. here is a look at the steadier rain and heading inland to the santa clara valley around gilroy and heading down the salinas valley. to the north pockets of showers moving through mendocino county. those will move down the coast as we head through the morning commute. this shot here 101 and 880 in san jose. 39 to 48, mild they are morning.

it will feel colder than the low to mid-50s because it will be breezy this afternoon. here is sue with a look at our morning commute. >> back to the bay bridge toll plaza. reports of an accident. first they said fast track lanes and now lane number four. apparently they have found the accident, a couple cars are stuck together, not moving. it is out of our picture shot but it is near the metering lights so you can tell they are on but it is just crawling to get through the toll plaza. the booth number 14 is out of commission as of a couple weeks now due to an earlier accident. westbound 580 near airway cleared off to the right-hand shoulder. a couple problems near lone tree way. an overturned partially blocking the left lane and near mcewen also blocking the left lane. we'll look at some of your drive times. hi, everyone. right now we are tracking

breaking news out of the south bay. a large police presence in a los gatos neighborhood. brand-new information within the last ten minutes or so and matt keller is joining us from the scene. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. i talked with the spokesperson from the santa clara county sheriff's office and he said this was a home invasion in los gatos. there's a big scene behind me, sheriff's deputies have blocked off this road. we talk with one neighbor about what deputies told him. >> just said there was a home invasion and asked if they caught the guy. they said no. i said i needed to get through to go to the safeway and they said just wave at the officers when you go by. >> reporter: more new information, the sheriff's office says there are five suspects, four men and a woman believed to be in their 20s. one victim is being treated for injuries. we saw an ambulance leave the

scene. the sheriff's office is not releasing details on the extent of the person's injuries. they're not going into any details about what was taken. now this is a very nice neighborhood here in los gatos. homes valued at $3 million to $7 million. the sheriff's department expects to be out here for quite a while longer. reporting live, matt keller, abc 7 news. this keeps happening and needs to stop. police investigating a string of incidents of people pointing lasers at planes. >> two at oakland international airport last night. amy? >> reporter: hi, reggie. officials say they've seen this before but the number of incidents seems to be going up. they've targeted flights out of the southfield, the south side of the oakland airport. not the commercial flights that leave out of the other side of the airport. a chp helicopter did a sweep last night looking for those who are doing this. they have good gps information

showing them where the lasers are coming from, so they feel confident they will find who is doing this and when they do they will be severely punished saying this is a serious >> you can cause blindness, loss of nice vision, permanent damage to the eyes of the pilot and cause them to lose control of the aircraft. >> reporter: this latest wave of laser attacks started early sunday morning as a chp crew flew over an east oakland a laser was pointed at the crew. no arrests have been made. the person or people doing this could face up to $11,000 fine for each strike. reporting live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. senate republicans have passed the gop's tax bill. it moves them one step closer to achieving their first legislative victory under president trump. polls show the bill is unpopular

with americans. this morning on "gma" house speaker paul ryan says americans will eventually come around. >> when they see the withholding tables change and more money in their paychecks, the growth at that will result from historic tax reform, minds will change and people will change their view on this. they've been hit with so many confusing, different messages, there's no wonder there's confusion. >> democrats disagree. senator harris says the republican tax bill that passed the senate is a travesty. it gives even more tax breaks to the top 1% and permanently cuts corporate tax rates at the expense of middle-class families. this isn't what americans wanted, and it's up to us to fight back at the ballot box in 2018. i also want to show you a tweet from senator dianne feinstein. she said senate republicans just gave corporations and the richest americans an early christmas present at the expense of middle-class families.

today the house will have to vote again. they're going to be voting on a revised version of the bill and president trump does plan to hole a news conference at the white house after the house passes the bill. back to you. berkeley police officers will be allowed to keep their pepper spray. that is the ruling from last night's city council meeting. the move rejects from a civilian commission board. there were concerns that wind in volatile crowds could prevent officers from pepper spraying one specific person and instead spray an unintended target. the city overturned a 20-year-old ban in september in response to a series of political protests that turned violent. the thomas fire burning in southern california is the second largest in our state's history. progress has been positive. nearly 272,000 acres burned in the thomas fire that is 424 square miles or nine times the size of san francisco. it's expected to be fully

the former boston archbishop who became the symbol of the sex abuse scandal inside the catholic church has died. the vatican confirmed this morning cardinal bernard law has died. vatican officials say law died in rome. he's infamously known in the united states after the "boston globe" revealed in 2002 that law and other bishops had covered for pedophile priests. law was then forced to resign as archbishop there. the vatican says he died after battling a long illness. he was 86 years old. this morning authorities are confirming five americans among those killed in a bus crash in mexico. the bus flipped while carrying cruise ship passengers who were coming from south florida on that ship. at least 12 people were killed. at least 18 were hurt. officials say it isn't clear why the driver lost control. the road was dry.

the sky was clear and no other vehicles were nearby. there were swerve marks all over the road. this next story may affect many of us. starting january 15th, all major airlines expect passengers to remove lithium ion batteries from their bags. if they're not removable the bag will not be allowed anywhere near the plane. this is according to consumeraffairs.com. the faa says they present an unacceptable risk. blue smart, the company that claims to be the world's first smart connected carry-on, claims it is in talks with the government to get this decision reversed. two of the newest residents of the oakland zoo. crown lemurs. the gray one is a girl.girl. most can't swim but he can. in fact, that's one of the reasons the pair ended up at the oakland zoo. it's more secure there and he can't escape by swimming away

as they passed the tax plan. shortly after midnight a celebration erupted in the senate. >> the tax cuts and jobs act passed. >> reporter: republicans cheered as they passed the most sweeping tax overhaul in three decades. democrats were outraged. >> that's what this bill is. it's an absolute disgrace. >> reporter: hours earlier a similar scene played out in the house. speaker paul ryan overjoyed as he gaveled in their vote. but shortly after the gop tax plan hit an unexpected procedural snag. the house will be forced to vote again today but the outcome is not expected to change. the bill gives the biggest tax cut to corporations. it permanently slashes the rate from 35% to 21%. tax cuts for individuals will expire after eight years. but americans will see their standard deduction and child tax credit doubled.

we could be voting on a possible $3 increase. they would need to take action before that happened on our ballot. it would raise $100 billion for new b.a.r.t. cars and improvements to freeway interchange. it would a ply to all our toll bridges except the golden gate bridge. the fast pace of repairs to a storm damaged section of highway 35. heavy rain in february washed away a long stretch of the road. an officer involved shooting that left a suspect hurt. police received a call about an assault with a deadly weapon. the suspect fled and a chase ensued. shots were fired and the suspect was taken to the hospital.

no word yet on the suspect's condition. >> identifying a bank robber, the orange goatee bandit. investigators say he robbed a wells fargo bank in fremont on december 1st and then struck again at a chase bank in millbrae three days later. in both cases the fbi says he passed a note to a teller demanding cash. described as slender, about 5'8" with an orange mustache and goatee. he has an earring and tattoos on his right hand. cannabis will be the hot topic when lawmakers, health leaders, growers and sellers meet in alameda county. the board of supervisors is hosting a summit to address the challenges and opportunities when marijuana becomes legal for recreational use on january 1st. supervisors say the cannabis industry is emerging as a major economic force. one big issue being discussed is the system california will use to track the movement of legal marijuana throughout the state.

we're still tracking developing news. a string of violent carjackings led police to a house in san jose. you can see a big operation involving a police robbery un. police are investigating a series of carjackings that happened in the past week. you can see a man with zip ties around his wrist being led away by an officer. this person had a warrant. they say it's not known if he's involved but they are checking him out and police say it's still early in their investigation. they are hoping the operation leads to some of those cases being solved. reggie? >> people pointing lasers at planes in the east bay. >> amy hollyfield is live with good morning, amy.

>> reporter: hi, natasha. this is happening to the cargo planes not the big commercial airliners. this is happening at the oakland this is happening at the oakland airport. a southbound cessna pilot was a victim. looking for the people who are doing this, investigators say they have good information about where the lasers are located. >> we can tell your exact gps coordinates. you can try to run but we know where you are. >> reporter: at this point no arrest have is been made. this is dangerous. they can cause blindness or temporary loss of vision and cause the pilot to lose control of the aircraft. this is a federal crime. you can be fined up to $11,000 per strike.

amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. morgan hill police are crediting a citizen with helping them catch three suspects in a home invasion shooting. a 62-year-old man was shot on calle mazatan. police say the victim called police before it happened to say someone was coming to shoot him. while they were treating the victim, police got another call. >> we received a 911 call from a citizen driving by and happened to see the two suspects running out of the house. the citizen turned around, followed, called 911 and our officers located the vehicle. three people were taken into custody. >> 6:46 now. in health news a possible breakthrough in gene therapy from people suffering from progressive blindness. the fda is approving a medication that can reverse a rare genetic form of blindness.

this makes it the first therapy to treat a genetic disease other than cancer. after years of trying a couple is celebrating the birth of their baby girl and they set a record. >> this is tina and benjamin gibson. they faced infertility for years before trying a frozen embryo transfer. they went to the national embryo donation center in knoxville, tennessee, to find the embryo. little did tina know the embryo was frozen for 24 years and resulted in their beautiful healthy little girl. that is a record. >> if this embryo was born when it was supposed to be, we could have been best friends. we could have been friends. and he thought that was so funny. that's been the going joke. it's just so crazy. >> because mom and daughter are technically a year and a half apart if we go back to embryo time. the gibsons named their new girl emma ren. she is sure in a year she'll be ready to try for another baby.
