that breaking news is in oakland. a deadly crash there involving a fedex truck and car. all of southbound 880 is shut down right now right near 66 avenue and abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is on the scene. amy? >> reporter: if you look behind me you can see the fedex truck is on its side. it overturned. they have to tow that out of here. they have to investigate the accident, gather all of their evidence, and wait for the coroner. it could be a few hours before this is reopened. we are on southbound 880 in oakland near the observing

coliseum. the fedex truck crashed with another car, and one of the drivers was killed. all lanes are closed. cars are being forced off the freeway at the 66th avenue exit. >> we're trying to divert all traffic off and then they can get back on south of 66. if this is your commute i would highly recommend finding a different route. >> reporter: authorities haven't released any information about the victim. they don't know the cause. i asked if alcohol was involved, they said it doesn't look that way. speed may have been a factor this is all under investigation. at 4:30 we were told this would probably be shut down for a couple of hours. at least possibly more. live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. all right, sue hall is tracking how to get around this, sue, is 580 an option here? >> that's what we're

trying to make their homes fire resistant. >> we would want to make sure they provide those incentives because we want people to do the good deed of cleaning the brush, be proactive keeping their homes safe which ultimately, you know, is key to saving properties during the wildfires. >> the senator wants to unveil the plan next month. developing news now washington state's governor says amtrak has agreed to pay the cost associated with monday's deadly derailment including medical and other expenses of the victims. amtrak's president also told the governor he would try to ensure a technology that can automatically slow or stop a speeding train will be in place statewide before a federal deadline at the end of next year. the train derailment killed three people. federal investigators are trying to determine what caused it. happening today the richmond police officer accused of shooting his gun inside of a hotel will be in court. investigators say officer phil

sanchez fired multiple shots by the four seasons in san francisco on sunday. sanchez's attorney says he may have been suffering a mental health episode. he's being charged with three felonies now. no one hurt in the incident. package theft is it an incident that escalates more and more every year and now thieves aren't even waiting for it to get to your doorstep. it's not the first time it's happened in san jose. here's abc 7 news reporter katie marzullo. >> reporter: this man is checking his mail to see if he received one of these, a notice from the postal inspection service alerting him to a recent case of mail theft. tonya was one of 100 customers who got the message. >> it's sad because people work hard for the money and to have it stolen like that is unfortunate. >> reporter: postal inspectors said a locked mail truck was broken into last wednesday. thieves stole four plastic tubs of packages. another truck was hit on november 30th. >> this is the holiday season.

that motorcyclist was lane splitting when the collision happened. the report cites a report the motorcyclist was at fault trying to pass another car. google filed a proposal in sunnyvale's moffitt park. "the mercury news" reports 4,500 employees could one day work in the more than 1 million square feet of offices. the project calls for two building complexes near moffitt field. renderings show the design for both buildings, it would not be built until 2021 at the earliest. >> glittery bows and ribbons may look pretty. do you know how to recycle those items? >> this is eye opening to a lot of us. republicans are now facing a new deadline. republican lawmakers are still hammering out a plan to avoid a government shutdown. arlette saenz is live with the details now. good morning, arlette. >> good morning. republicans had their celebration over taxes yesterday but now they're facing a new deadline. congress is in an all-out scramble. congress is barreling to a government shutdown with no consensus on how to avoid it. house gop leaders presented a tentative plan to keep the government funded through january 19th. a four-week extension for flood insurance and the children's health insurance program. it calls for a standalone vote

below average, 38 today. back to average if not warmer friday through sunday and then a chance of light snow monday, tuesday and wednesday. want to show you this, the aftermath of an explosion inside a hollywood restaurant. investigators are right now looking into it. they think it was caused by a natural gas leak. one person was hurt, minor injuries, though. and this is new video we got overnight. you can see what they were doing initially when they heard about the blast. it happened last night in a restaurant on the first floor of a six-story apartment building, and the blast blew out the window, sent some glass and debris onto the sidewalks and on to the street. the woman who was hurt has only minor injuries and the investigation is expected to last throughout the day today. back to you. firefighters have been making progress on the thomas fire. >> winds are expected to pick up again today and that could, of

course, slow the progress. red flag warnings are in effect across santa barbara county to los angeles county. the thomas fire is currently at 60% containment burning more than 272,000 acres making it the second largest wildfire in state history. officials fear the coming winds could make it the largest. and san mateo county firefighters are home after more than two weeks on the front lines of the thomas fire. they posted this festive photo on tuesday night. the crews say they are proud to have been called on to help battle the massive fire. we are certainly proud of them. starting tomorrow most alameda county courts will be alameda county courts will be closed because of budget issues. t there will be some staff available to handle emergency matters. all courthouses will reopen on tuesday, january 2nd. a big surprise for a north bay family who lost their home
