good morning, everyone. a major headache for commuters in the east bay and anyone trying to get to the oakland airport this morning. crews are still working to clear a deadly crash that involved a fedex truck and a car shutting down 880 near 66th avenue. amy hollyfield is live for us on the scene with the latest information. amy? >> reporter: hi, jessica. they're saying they're going to open the lanes up at the earliest at 7:00 this morning. they are making some progress. i understand you have a sky 7 shot so you can see the backup. we think there are frustrations from drivers. one yelled out an angry comment. it's taking drivers -- someone just yelled again. frustrated drivers. this is an area you will want to

avoid. they could reopen it as early as 7:00 but not before that. it happened at 2:50 this morning. we are near the coliseum. traffic is being forced to exit at 66th avenue. this was a fatal accident as a fedex truck crashed with a sedan and one of the drivers was killed. >> our officers found paramedics were already on scene working on the driver of the overturned sedan. a person was pronounced dead on scene. the big rig driver was transported for injuries. >> reporter: they don't know the cause yet of the accident but are making progress as far as getting this cleared. the tow truck is here to get those cars uprighted and out of here, and the coroner has also arrived. they say at least they'll have an hour of work left to do here, maybe more. live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news.

fire was burning in the kitchen. no one was hurt. >> an appreciation of their job. according to "the press democrat" the district attorney will not be charging the owners of the home where the fire started back in september of 2015. cal fire says the cause was faulty wiring in a hot tub. the fire burned more than 76,000 acres and killed four people and destroyed 13,000 homes. google has filed a proposal for a new development in moffitt park. 4,500 employees could one day work in the more than 1 million square feet of offices. a closer look. the project calls for two complexes near moffitt field. long inclines that allowed google employees to walk or bicycle to any level of the building.

amy hollyfield who is on scene on the ground for us. amy? >> reporter: jessica, just got an update they've pushed this opening time up. they're saying 7:45 at the earliest is when the lanes will be reopening. we see the fedex truck is still on its side. they have a ways to go. look at the sky 7 image of the backup. that is the big story here. all these people waiting to get to the 66th avenue exit where they are being forced off the freeway, we are hearing some frustration from drivers. a few have yelled out their windows at chp to open up the lanes and we've heard a few r-rated words. a lot of frustration. if you can avoid it, you should. take a closer look at the accident scene and you'll see that overturned fedex truck and sedan crashed and still need to be cleared out of here and have to gather their evidence. the driver of the sedan was

killed. he's been described as a hispanic male. the driver of the big rig is at the hospital. he was also hurt. this is southbound 880 near the coliseum in oakland. cars again exiting at 66, not allowed to pass through. all lanes are closed. we asked chp to explain to frustrated drivers why they shut down all the lanes. >> because somebody did die on our freeway this morning, we feel it's our duty to shut down the freeway, to comb through all evidence and the entire scene, to process the scene, to ensure the victim, the victim's family, that everyone gets the best service they can from the chp. >> reporter: this happened at 2:50 this morning. we're coming up on four hours of the scene being here. they don't know the cause yet of the crash. they're still looking into it. they have a lot of investigation left to do and a huge backup.

avoid this area if you can. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. amy, thank you. 7:45 for that reopening time, moved up a little bit. i want to show you another big story i've been tracking. more than a dozen people hurt after a car plowed into pedestrians in melbourne, australia. this is the newest video of that car being removed from the scene. you can see how much damage there was. police are calling all of this a deliberate act. 19 people were hurt overnight. four of them critically. a 32-year-old australian man of afghan descent who has been known to police was arrested and officers say he has a history of drug use as well as mental health issues. the incident is not related to terrorism. >> we're going to have hundreds more police who will be out and about. it's a festive season. we have the carols, the boxing

there's an investigation since it is an apartment building that's expected to last throughout the day. cal fire says firefighters have been making progress in southern california. winds are expected to pick up today and that could slow progress. red flag warnings to los angeles county. the thomas fire is at 60% containment and has burned more than 272,000 acres making it the second largest wildfire in state history. it is so close to overcoming the biggest in san diego. after more than two weeks on the front lines of the thomas fire, they posted this picture. the crew is proud to have been called on to help battle that massive fire. a school is collecting books

to be or not to be. one storm says to be and one forecast model says not to be. a day closer and still a little uncertainty but we'll still take a look at it here in 45 seconds. that's our range of highs from half moon bay to antioch, napa and santa cruz. everybody in the 30s except for the coast and san francisco in the 40s. we have a freeze warning tonight. if you're heading out for the earlier services, it could be wet. it could be wet all the way up until possibly a midnight mass or service for you. as we head throughout the day it's just about over. remember, this is the model that says it's going to rain. and the potential is out there for about 0 .05 to 0.2 of an inch of rain. we'll get a better idea what will happen.
