widespread freezing temperatures. 22 to 32 degrees. protect your plants and your wipes and don't forget to bring your pets inside. watch out for icy roads especially with all of the frost that is expected as you take a look at live doppler 7. there is not a thick blanket of clouds to keep the heat trapped in so tomorrow morning do not leave home without a heavy winter coat or a jacket. i'll be home to show you how cold it will be coming up. dan and kristen. >> katie utis is monitoring the cold weather in the east bay. >> katie is live in tester. >> this new warming shelter opened up just in time. 15 people are sleeping warm tonight inside. capacity is 25. so they have room for more people tonight if you need somewhere to stay. a hot meal and a warm welcome on this cold winter night. >> thank you. >> you're welcome.

on wilt protector or covering them with cloths so frost doesn't reach them. donations of sleeping bags, socks, jackets and other supplies would be appreciated. in the east bay, abc 7 news. and we have breaking news in antioch right now. six structures burned tonight in multiple locations. take a look at that. most happened on west magill street. three boarded up abandoned homes and two out buildings and a commercial building on a street also caught fire. arson investigators are also on the scene but nobody was hurt. tonight hundreds braved the chilly weather in san francisco's chinatown for a candlelight vigil to honor the late mayor, ed lee. some in the chinese community were offended by two things that happened ♪ this little light of mine, i'm going to let it shine ♪

criticism, mrs. schultz apologizes if any of her comments regarding the mayor, which were intended to be heart felt and warm, offended anyone. >> i'm not going to comment on charlotte. she misspoke. she loved ed. >> mayor lee's closest friend, gordon chin, said this was to honor the mayor everyone loved. >> they're coming together. the entire community that ed lee supported, ed lee loved. >> reporter: in a city where he will never be forgotten. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. santa rosa police are looking for a suspect in a stabbing at lowela's market on t ton avenue. a 61-year-old man had a severe wound to his neck. they released this image of the suspect. the victim and the suspect had been sitting at different tables but they never spoke to each

other. the victim's injuries are said to be life threatening. the san francisco symphony has severed ties with world renowned conductor charles dutoi. the 81-year-old conductor was scheduled to conduct the san francisco symphony in january and april. in a statement today the symphony said the move was made due to a zero tolerance policy due to sexual harassment in the workplace. a man arrested and accused of mailing homemade bombs to two homes, including one where a police officer lives. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow. >> reporter: neighbors on mountain view avenue say they were stunned to see s.w.a.t. teams converge on this home last night. >> guys jumped out with the guns and everything. i said, oh, god. >> came out to take the garbage out and the whole street was covered with police. >> reporter: officials arrested

56-year-old ross laverty. this is laverty in a mug shot from 2015. a federal criminal complaint charges laverty with mailing an explosive device. law enforcement officials with knowledge of the investigation say they recovered evidence from the home on mountain view avenue last night. >> when i seen that up there last night i said, not in this neighborhood. we don't do those kind of things up here. >> according to the charging documents laverty released an i.e.d. in palo alto. veronica maldanato's father opened the box with damage to his ears. >> he held it at a distance and that's when it really exploded. >> reporter: then just this past month laverty is accused of mailing another i.e.d., this time to a police officer in alameda. the devices and packaging were

similar. officials linked him to the crimes from dna evidence they say he left behind on the batteries he used in the impt e.d.s. when investigators entered the dna into a database it resulted in a match with laverty's dna since he was already a convicted offender. he appeared in federal court today. he remains in custody. his detention hearing is scheduled for next week. it could take up to a year for an oakland hills street to reopen. fire at a construction site destroyed four homes and damaged a retaining wall supporting a stretch snake road near armor drive. the hill side gave way leaving the paved rote without proper structural support. a detailed report is expected by the city at the end of january. the fight for charles manson's body has turned into a circus. more than a month after manson

new at 11:00, it was a magical night in santa clara for hundreds of kids from boys and girls clubs who were treated at winter fest. katie marzullo has the details from santa to snow. >> 4, 3, 2, 1! whew! >> reporter: a 60 foot symbol that winter fest is officially underway from 400 kids from silicon valley. >> i'm very excited because it's my first time being here as well as it's christmas time so i'm very happy and excited. >> i love to be representing the club. it's important to me. >> reporter: the kids were treated to dinner, then turned loose in the park for roller coaster, ice skating, pictures with santa and his helpers and all things holiday. ♪

see a beautiful view of the bay, but because the winds are so light the temperatures under clear skies as you look at live doppler 7, they are dropping. they are plunging. 28 degrees in nevada. bone chilling cold in fairfield. 30 degrees already. people are actually reporting that they can feel it. now sfo is 45 degrees as you'll notice right now. when you compare nevado to some of the midwest cities, it's colder than cleveland, chicago, detroit right now here in nevado. definitely feeling the change in the air. winter has arrived. arrived this morning. you're going to feel it tomorrow morning. it will be icy out there. please be careful. temperatures in the mid to upper 20s. fairfield, you will notice. livermore down to 28 degrees. you're going to be below freezing in concord. right above freezing in san jose at 33. san mateo, 43 grease in san francisco and 43 in half moon

bay. saturday morning you'll still have a chilly morning as you'll notice. some of those temperatures will be near freezing inland. not so cold sunday. temperatures start to rise and that, of course, will continue. a milder morning for your monday as we start to see more upper 30s as opposed to 20. now wood burning is banned for the next three days. unfortunately you're going to have to use your heat. can't burn the wood, it is illegal. you have a spare the air alert. moderate air quality is expected the next three days. tomorrow afternoon temperatures in the low 50s to low 60s. a cool winter day on at that point. traveling to tahoe, expect cold winter mornings. 40s for the afternoon. clouds will be around. does not look like a white christmas for those folks up in tahoe. the good thing is at least it will be great travel weather heading up to the mountains. traveling up the state, you're good to go.
