good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top headlines we're following on "world news now." the department of homeland security is calling on americans to be vigilant in a record holiday travel season. more than 100 million people will be on the move between now and the new year. vice president mike pence has visited with american soldiers in afghanistan. the secret visit also included a briefing with u.s. military leaders and a meeting with afghan leaders. it was pence's first trip to afghanistan. the president has not yet been there. legendary sportscaster, dick enberg has died. at 82. during his nearly 60-year career he called nearly every type of sporting event, but probably best known for his nfl coverage. he died at his home in san diego. and christmas came early for

stay alert. heightened security in new york city after those two terror attacks in the past eight weeks. the halloween truck attack that killed eight, and the port authority isis-inspired subway bombing last week. the city is deploying special explosive detecting k-9s and hundreds of additional officers. >> around the world we're seeing increased tensions, so we think this is a prudent action. >> reporter: in washington, d.c., extra precaution as an isis-inspired group sent out posters showing the famed washington cathedral on fire. backpacks and oversized bags will no longer be permitted inside the national cathedral. and in las vegas, the city is installing 800 safety posts to stop potential vehicle attacks and sending in a record number of national guard soldiers. this call to arms by isis has led to a considerable concern, but at the time they say there

are no credible threats. >> the weather will make that travel challenging. >> the radar showing that storm system moving across the country, and it will bring snow and rain to the eastern half of the nation. here's accuweather's melissa constanzer with more on what we can expect the next few days. >> good morning, kendis, diane. one of the big travel delays here will be across the south. we're looking at heavy rain from eastern texas right on in through nashville and the ohio river valley. some places could pick up two to three inches. which means flash flooding is a potential. then the rain moves to the northeast as we go through saturday. so expect big travel delays here along the i-95 corridor and light snow toward the northwest. kendis, diane? >> it should make for beautiful skiing toward the northwest. and we turn to congress, averting a government shutdown

just days before christmas. lawmakers voted to fund federal agencies through much of next month. the bill includes money to extend a children's health insurance program and intelligence surveillance. but a number of major issues will be delayed to next year. they'll have to battle over defense funding, immigration protections for the so-called d.r.e.a.m.ers and subsidies for the health insurance market as well. another top presidential aide is leaving the white house. deputy chief of staff rick dearborn stepping down to work in the private sector. "the wall street journal" reports he oversaw the white house political operation which was involved in the endorsement of losing senate candidate roy moore. he has worked for president trump for more than two years, and chief of staff john kelly says it breaks his heart to see him leave. over to australia where the suspect in that melbourne attack is telling police he heard voices. police say the suspect also missed a mental health appointment before ramming his

car into a crowd of pedestrians. james longman has more. >> reporter: frenzied chaos on a busy australian street. this mangled wreck, the weapon in what authorities are calling a deliberate act. witnesses say the white suv ran red lights before slamming into pedestrians. >> saw people screaming, running, thinking it was a bomb. >> reporter: injuring 18. one still in critical condition. this man dragged from the suv. officers seen holding him down and slapping him. authorities saying there is so far no link to terrorism. but the suspect was known to police. >> he's a 32-year-old australian citizen of afghan descent and has a history of drug use as well as mental health issues. >> reporter: a similar incident in january killed six people right around the corner. >> shocking and surprising that it happened again. >> reporter: concrete blocks were installed to prevent more vehicle attacks. but melbourne is shaken again.

the suspect is still in the hospital where police are yet to formally interview him. they're still looking for a motive for this latest vehicle attack. james longman, abc news, london. and while vice president mike pence is in afghanistan visiting troops, jim mattis was visiting with u.s. military personnel at guantanamo bay, cuba. he did not visit the detention center where some 55 terror suspects are being held. he didn't even talk about it for that matter. he's the first american defense secretary to visit gitmo since donald rumsfeld did some 15 years ago. on the other side of the island, the president, raul castro says he'll stay in office a little longer than expected. he will step down as cuba's president on april 19th. that's two months longer than originally planned. the 86-year-old has led the country since 2006. of course he took over for his brother, fidel who retired due to health issues. recovery from hurricane irma was

the reason for delaying the presidential election from now till april. papa john is stepping down as ceo of papa john's. the pizza company's founder says john shatner will be replaced on january 1st. it comes about two months after he said the nfl anthem controversy was slowing sales growth. papa johns is a nfl sponsor. the company later apologized for shatner's statement. he will remain as chairman of the board. so facebook is changing the way it identifies fake news stories. it is dumping its system of red flagged icons next to the stories flagged as false. now such articles will have related articles next to them from reputable news sources. recent tests found fewer hoaxed articles were shared when they appeared next to ones that were fact checked. >> good strategy. and the secret to better sleep? listen up. might be fish. >> so scientists say kids who

there's a new lawsuit against harvey weinstein filed by an employee of the weinstein's company who worked on the netflix show "marco polo." she says he subjected her to repeated sexual assault and battery. weinstein made it clear to her that there would be serious consequences if she refused him. weinstein had denied any non-consensual sex with those making accusations against him. a wisconsin teen convicted in the so-called slenderman case has been sentenced to 25 years

in a mental hospital. she claimed to have attempted to kill her classmate to win favor with a fictional character named slenderman. the victim was stabbed 19 times but survived. all three girls were 12 at the time of the attack. a baby is safe this morning. >> an amber alert was issued after her mother was found stabbed to death. the suspect is in custody. and police have revealed a stunning story. abc's marcus moore reports. >> reporter: the stunning twist of a missing 6 week old baby. houston police say this woman murdered her friend and kidnapped the baby whom she claimed as her own. >> a pretty horrific homicide. >> reporter: 28-year-old erica mirandez recently miscarried. faked a pregnancy to hide the miscarriage from her boyfriend. the baby was found just after

billion package to help victims of hurricanes but the senate did not take up the bill before the holidays. diane and kendis. the u.n. condemns president trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital passed 128-9. more than 50 countries abstained or were absent. the vote came after the president threatened to cut off aid for countries that did not take america's side. a threat from nikki haley was largely ignored. >> the united states will remember this day in which it was singled out for attack in the general assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation. >> that resolution is non-binding. haley said it would make no difference in u.s. plans to move the american embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem. vice president mike pence

make a surprise visit to soldiers in afghanistan. he met with a small group at bagram air base. pence wished the troops a merry christmas and told them president trump is committed to staying in that fight. earlier pins pence met with the afghan president in kabul. it's the first time that pence has visited average. the president has not been there or the to iraq. president trump goes to florida today for the holiday. he traveled to walter reed medical center to meet with wounded soldiers and their families. the president called the nation's wounded warriors some of the bravest people anywhere in the world. he also awarded a purple heart to a 25-year-old lieutenant who was injured by an improvised explosive device in afghanistan last month. there is lots of rubber hitting the road for the holiday travel weekend, as you might imagine. >> nearly 100 million people are expected to travel for the christmas and new year's holidays. a 3% increase over last year.

>> some will have to deal with a storm as they make their travel. that storm is going across the country, and there are winter weather advisories in states from utah to massachusetts. >> well, snow is already hitting some areas. there are concerns about icing and heavy rains in the northeast today. here's accuweather's melissa constanzer with more on what to expect this weekend. >> good morning, kendis, diane. we are looking at some heavy rain here in the southeast. so expect travel troubles, especially as we go later in the afternoon and into tomorrow morning. some places will pick up 2 to 3 inches. flash flooding is a concern, so be extra cautious on the roadways. and that rain then extends into the northeast as we head into saturday. we're talking about the i-95 corridor to boston getting rain, not snow, but rain. so that will create travel concerns there. meanwhile snow out to the northwest. taking you into sunday, and there's going to be a light swath of snow here in the midwest and towards st. louis. a couple rain showers as you go to the southeast, but things are getting a bit quieter, and then it's all about the cold as we

head into christmas day, kendis, diane. >> quite a bit of a cold front moving into chicago over the weekend. thanks, melissa. more than 6 million people will fly to their destination. and many will see new airport security equipment at work. the goal of the new automated screening system is supposedly to speed up the process, yet travelers will be asked to remove any device larger than a cell phone from their carry-on bag. despite the beefed up security, u.s. law enforcement says there's no specific intelligence about any pending threat. we have some breaking news in the meantime. the legendary sports broadcaster, dick enberg has died. he spent most of his nearly 60-year career with nbc, calling everything from nfl to major league baseball to boxing and horse racing. enberg, who works for nbc and espn, as well. he included an enthusiastic "oh, my" in reaction to great plays. his family believes he suffered a heart attack. he was 82 years old.

and the man who's accused of slamming a suv into a crowd of pedestrians in australia tells police he heard voices. police in melbourne says he's an australian of afghan dissint and has a history of mental illness. and he blames some of his actions on the mistreatment of muslims. at least 12 people were hurt in that attack. so far, investigators have ruled out terrorism. and at least 29 people are dead and 29 others injured in south korea's worst fire in years. flames engulfed an eight-story sports center. in a city about 70 miles east of seoul. most of the dead were women using a public bath. investigators believe the fire started in a parking lot. officials say it does not appear it was deliberately set. south korean president moon jae-in visits the site. >> the olympic torch was supposed to go by that same

building today, but it has since been rerouted. back here at home, one person was killed and another injured in a house explosion in phoenix. a gas leak likely caused that blast. witnesses say a new gas stove was being delivered at the time of the blast. the mother and three children who live at the home are safe. an investigation is in its early stages. and there's another update on that wild race for a political seat in virginia. we finally know how they're going to pick a winner. >> so this has been a strange back and forth, cue the vote 2016, 2018 -- where are we? 2017. >> almost. you nailed it. >> music. this is going to continue through 2018. >> it just might. >> democrat shelly simon the ds and republican davis yancey, you see him there. after last month's election, yancy was ahead by ten votes. but then a recount gave simonds a one-point lead. and then the examination of one more ballot left it here with a tie. >> dead even.

scary scene in cincinnati as scary scene in cincinnati as a man entering a hospital pulls out two guns. as he walks through the metal detectors there. police say he shot an unarmed security guard twice in the torso. he also opened fire on a cincinnati officer who was responding to the scene. authorities say the suspect later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. and the coroner is out with new information about the las vegas concert shooting rampage. he says all 58 of the victim attacks -- the victims, rather, would died in that attack were from gunshot wounds and that no one died after being trampled
