>> saying good-bye to a broadcast legend. this morning we remember dick enberg. and oprah's personal appeal. her new warning about fraudsters and the scam using her name. a good friday morning to you all. the holiday travel rush is already getting started. tens of millions of americans are plotting their way to their christmas destinations. >> and in many areas the weather is not cooperating. rain, sleet and snow is expected to cause delays across the country. we're going to have more on the forecast in a moment. but first the great holiday escape and what's different this year. this morning, the holiday rush is under way with record crowds on the road and a 4% increase in travelers at the airports. 2.7 million people are expected to fly today alone, but new technology is making travel safer and faster. >> i couldn't believe my eyes as far as the size, the openness, the number of people working on

this thing. >> reporter: boston's logan airport is one of a dozen using conveyer belts and bigger bins to keep those screening lines moving, and the tsa says the security will be just as good, if not better. >> if there is a bag that needs a secondary search, it will automatically divert to this lane closest to you. >> reporter: still, flyers can expect longer lines this year because of stricter checks for electronics. abc's david kerley is outside washington, d.c. >> while the weather is still a threat, the sheer volume is the problem. tsa expected to screen 20% more passengers over these busy days, and don't forget those new rules at tsa, electronic items bigger than your phone may have to come out of your bag. >> reporter: security is being stepped up at so-called soft targets as well as homeland security warns as you travel, shop and gather together to celebrate the holiday season, we ask you to stay alert. in new york city the nypd is deploying special explosive detection canine teams, radiation detection devices and hundreds of additional officers

and in las vegas the city is installing 800 safety posts on the strip to stop potential vehicle attacks and sending in a record number of nevada guard soldiers. and holiday airfares are cheaper than they were last year but if you're driving, you'll be paying the highest gas prices in three years. and consider this, aaa says the number of people traveling over the holiday season has jumped more than 25% in the last decade because of population growth and the improving economy, so get ready for traffic. >> get ready for some friends. let's get to that forecast we talked about. winter storms are causing problems from the rockies to new england, so let's get a closer look at the weather. >> good morning. if you're headed out early for the holiday weekend, expect some slow going here in new england as we go through your friday. icy accumulations possible north of interstate 80 where we could see rain, freezing rain, sleet and, yes, even snow as you go into parts of new

hampshire and vermont. then that snow changes into rain as we head into saturday here. we have some heavy rainfall through the eastern half of the nation. some spots will pick up two to three inches. so watch out for flash flooding and also some snow towards the northwest. i'm meteorologist melissa constanzer with this accuweather forecast. well, congress is heading home for the holidays after narrowly avoiding a government shutdown. >> lawmakers have agreed to a short-term funding bill, but they've left plenty of unfinished business affecting everything from children's health care to disaster relief funding to protections for immigrants who arrive in the u.s. as children. abc's arlette saenz has some new details for us from washington. good morning, arlette. >> reporter: good morning, diane and kendis. well, lawmakers kicked the can down the road once again and avoided a government shutdown for now, but when they return from the holidays, there will be plenty of political fights waiting. with the holidays in sight, lawmakers avoided a government shutdown. the house -- >> the motion is adopted. >> reporter: and then the senate --

>> the motion to concur is agreed to. >> reporter: -- passed a bill to keep the government running through january 19th. >> we're ready to work together across the aisle to ensure there is no lapse in funding for critical services. >> reporter: the measure extends funding for flood insurance and a controversial surveillance program. it funds the children's health insurance program c.h.i.p. providing coverage for 9 million kids through march. congress punts until the new year on thorny political issues like spending caps, protections for the so-called d.r.e.a.m.ers and stabilizing health insurance markets just as nearly 9 million people signed up for obamacare next year. >> we hope the future will be different and our republican friends realize their legislative and political goals are better served by bipartisanship and compromise rather than gridlock and strife. >> reporter: another issue waiting till 2018, aid for victims of this year's devastating hurricanes and wildfires. the house approved an $81 billion disaster relief package but the senate will take it up next year.

president trump suggested democrats were eager for a shutdown. he tweeted, democrats want to shut down for the holidays in order to distract from the very popular just passed tax cuts. >> there's no democrat i know that wants the government to shut down, and the president needs to put his twitter account under his pillow and sleep on it. >> reporter: president trump will sign that funding measure later today, and an official says there's a chance he will sign the tax bill as well. the president heads down to mar-a-lago for the holidays later this morning. diane and kendis, hope you have a great holiday weekend too. >> and you do the same, arlette. thank you. and one of president trump's closest advisers is resigning. deputy chief of staff rick dearborn is stepping down to enter the private sector. it's the latest in a string of high-profile departures from the white house and this comes amid reports of tensions among the president's advisers who have reportedly disagreed about a strategy for the midterm elections. sources describe a heated exchange between the president's former campaign manager and his political director.

well, vice president mike pence has made a surprise visit to afghanistan where he says victory is closer than ever because of progress on the ground there. he offered holiday greetings to u.s. troops and assured them that the trump administration is committed to staying in the fight until the end. >> under president donald trump, the armed forces of the united states will remain engaged in afghanistan until we eliminate the terrorist threat to our homeland, our people once and for all. [ applause ] >> that war is already in its 15th year, and pence also met with afghan leaders. he says they confirm that more senior taliban leaders have been eliminated this year than in all previous years of the war. the u.n. security council votes today on new sanctions against north korea. the u.s. has been pushing for new punishments in the wake of kim jong-un's recent missile launch. the proposed sanctions include tougher limits on oil exports and restricting north

koreans from working abroad. many will be watching on how china votes today. meanwhile, u.s. ambassador nikki haley has now invited the countries that chose not to denounce the trump administration on thursday to a reception. the u.n. general assembly passed a nonbinding resolution that condemns the u.s. for recognizing jerusalem as israel's capital. the vote was 128-9 despite president trump's threat to cut off aid. we got some new details in that election recount in virginia that seems to go on forever and forever between those two candidates for the house of delegates. we now know how the race will be decided. each candidate's name will be printed on a piece of paper which will be placed inside old film canisters stored in the election department's office. the canisters will go into a bowl and will be shaken and then a member of the board of elections will randomly pick one to determine the winner. that person will determine which party actually controls the virginia house. that's just about the same. yeah.

we're back with dramatic images from a devastating fire in south korea. at least 29 people have been killed inside a sports complex about 70 miles east of seoul. investigators believe the fire started in the parking lot. most victims were women using a public bath at the facility. now to another powerful image, this one back here at

home, and firefighters in california finally getting some rest after a grueling 24-hour shift battling those historic fires north of los angeles. now, thanks to their efforts, there is good news to report this morning. all major evacuation orders have been lifted. officials say a new round of winds have caused little new fire activity. so most people in santa barbara county are being allowed back home. executives of the miss america pageant are under fire after leaked e-mails show them bashing previous winners. ceo sam haskell sent messages that were so degrading and vulgar dick clark productions has now cut ties with the pageant and will no longer produce the live show. many of those e-mails targeted 2013 miss america winner mallory hagan with references from everything from her weight gain to her sex life. former miss america and tv host gretchen carlson was also attacked allegedly for trying to modernize the organization and she is now calling for haskell to resign. harvey weinstein is facing a new sexual harassment lawsuit from an employee of his company.

better ingredients, better pizza. papa john's. >> all right, well, papa john is out at papa john's pizza. founder john schnatter will be replaced as ceo. it comes just weeks after he criticized how the nfl was handling the national anthem protest blaming lower football ratings for a drop in pizza sales. papa john's is the league sponsor. schnatter plans to stay on as chairman of the board. and police in central california are on the hunt for a possible serial shooter. they're looking for a person they believe is behind at least ten drive-by shootings. in each case a car was hit. it all happened between late november and early this week in fresno and ma deer row counties. one woman was hurt by shrapnel as she sat in one of those cars. >> a common thread in all the reports is that the victims say they heard loud bangs as another vehicle passed them going the opposite direction in the

roadway. they later inspect their vehicles and find bullet holes in various places. >> police say they believe the shooter is firing at random. a 6-week-old baby missing after her mother's murder is safe this morning as we learn new details about her ordeal. shamali flores was found thursday at an apartment complex in houston. a family friend is now charged with murdering the baby's mother. now police say the suspect hid a recent miscarriage and took the baby because she didn't want to disappoint her boyfriend. and police in miami say an obsessed katy perry fan is under arrest accused of stalking. pawel jurski allegedly followed the singer around the country entering a restricted area of a concert venue and then tried to rush the stage. they say he also hid inside a stairwell at a hotel and once followed her to a steakhouse. police say he told them he would do whatever it takes to be with perry. a bit of medical news now, and scientists say they found a strong connection between eating fish and getting a good night's

let's see if we can get our live shot up. some problems eastbound on the bay bridge. that has been pushed off to the shoulder and traffic is moving well from emeryville all the way in to the bay bridge toll plaza. we'll try to update that in a couple of minutes. >> sue is on space mountain this morning. as sue mentioned noticeably cooler this morning, freezing in some areas. some bay area cities are now opening their warming shelters. >> reporter amy hollyfield is live in castro valley where apparently a number of people were looking to get out of the weather. >> reporter: and they did, reggie, they are sleeping inside. everyone is still asleep. it's also very cold here. it's a relief to know they are tucked inside where it's warm. this church opened its gym in hayward. the word spread quickly this was opening up. almost all 25 spots are taken.

they will be doing this on nights the temperature drops below 40 degrees. there was a huge demand last night in the area. >> a lot of the waiting lists were full, and the best we could do was say a prayer and give them a blanket. we thought what can we do that would help people this year? >> reporter: alameda county will pay for the church to do this for 50 nights this winter. they still need some help. they're looking for donations of sleeping bags, socks and jackets, anything you can get to keep everyone warm. those who need the shelter say they're appreciative. one man said he never expected to be in the situation, but here he is. he's grateful for the warm place to sleep for himself but also for his dog. he has his dog warm. especially since the temperature shows right now it is just above freezing here. there's certainly a bite out here. it's very cold. reporting live, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news.

i want to tell you about a story our entire live desk team is working on right now. multiple fires in the east bay. investigators believe someone intentionally set at least six structures on fire. they broke out at two separate locations in antioch last night. three abandoned homes and two out buildings caught fire on west madill street a. commercial building also burned. i want to show you a picture here of the fire. the contra costa county fire protection district tweeted it. it shows huge flames shooting out of the building on a street at the acacia cremation and burial society. all the fires were very close and broke out within ten minutes of each other. >> fire investigators looking into the cause of the fire at this point. we do believe all the fires are likely set fires.
