good morning and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen, tracking live doppler 7. hi, lisa. >> hey, chris, good morning to you. live doppler 7 is showing you that because of the cloud cover, we are insulated, and there is more cloud cover to come throughout the day today. in fact through the weekend. so it's filtered sunshine for your afternoons. and that also will bring a spare the air alert today and tomorrow, poor air quality for the north bay, the coast, central bay, and inland east bay. that ridge of high pressure capping the atmosphere, allowing for the particulates and pollutants to stay with us for the next 72 hours. 36 in santa rosa, chilly there, but elsewhere in the 40s. we're seven to nine degrees warmer. and the rest of the day today looks like this. by 2:00 we'll have temperatures in the mid-50s, partly to mostly cloudy. and noticing 7:00, we're in the

40s and 50s, chris. now to developing news out of the south bay. deputies have a suspect in custody after a shooting at a bar and bowling alley and cupertino. santa clara sheriff's deputies were called to the location at 10:30 last night. witnesses say a fight broke out at a party for a local rapper. then gunshots. >> i ran through the hallway of the bowling alley. i was ducking underneath where they stage the balls. and i went to go into the girls' bathroom when i heard gunshots on the other side of the lockers. >> deputies say one person was shot in the leg. they arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting and found two guns at the scene. anyone with video or information about the incident is urged to contact authorities. this morning, we're learning more about the man accused of plotting a terror attack at san francisco's pier 39. the suspect is from the central valley but he was just here in the bay area on sunday at the raiders game with his dad.

everitt aaron jameson appeared in a federal court in fresno yesterday afternoon, accused in a criminal complaint of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and plotting an attack. abc 7 news reporter dion lim has the details from pier 39. >> reporter: pier 39, a hub of holiday activity popular with tourists, planned in a terrorist attack. >> it's a popular place to be. yeah, it's very scary. >> reporter: this is the suspect, everitt jameson. according to a federal criminal complaint, the fbi was first alerted to him after a series of social media posts supporting terrorism. the fbi says the tow truck driver from modesto expressed admiration for the halloween terror attack in new york city that killed eight people and planned to use a truck in the attack on pier 39. jameson had worked at anderson's towing in modesto since august. >> this event brings terror way too close to home.

>> reporter: in 2009, jameson served a short 4 1/2 months in the marines, earning a sharpshooter qualification before being discharged for not disclosing his asthma. he told fbi informants, "i have been trained in combat and things of war. anything for allah. he is the best of planners." he told the fbi agent he could carry out the attack this week. jameson said christmas would be the perfect day. >> no warning signs or nothing. >> reporter: we spoke to his father, who was shocked at the fbi's findings. >> you don't kill people. you don't blow up people. you know what i mean? you don't do that. >> reporter: the fbi executed a search warrant on jameson's home and found fireworks, firearms, and a last will and testament. jameson's attorney says his client will plead not guilty to any

charges brought against him. in san francisco, dion lim, abc 7 news. former fbi counterterrorism specialist steve gomez said a big concern for law enforcement in this case is jameson's background as a marine. >> he had received extensive training on the use of weapons and military tactics. when jameson was discharged from the marine corps, that may have created bitterness in him which ultimately led to the idea of committing an attack on behalf of isis. >> gomez reiterated the importance of the public alert law enforcement to say something if they see something that's on concern, especially if it's online. the feds looked at the possibility of an attack on san francisco's new year's eve celebration. there's no information about a specific credible threat, but as always, the fbi and department of homeland security is concerned about attacks at an event where the public are gathered. the san francisco police department says, during the holiday season, the public will notice an increased law enforcement presence in shopping corridors and at our city's attractions. as always, authorities are urging anyone to report any

suspicious activity. abc 7 news was the first to send out a push alert on the arrest of the terror suspect on the abc 7 news app. download our upgraded app and national push alerts to get updates like the ones we sent out yesterday morning. in other headlines, officials say the massive thomas fire in southern california is now the largest in state history. the fire has charred more than 273,000 acres and destroyed more than 700 homes. containment is up to 65%. these san rafael firefighters are back home after fighting the thomas fire. they tweeted out these photos of their efforts on the front line. today firefighters will hold a memorial for a cal fire engineer who died while responding to the thomas fire. governor jerry brown is expected to attend. cory iverson died last thursday in ventura county. he leaves behind his wife, who is expecting their second child, and his 2-year-old daughter. a gofundme account has been set up to help the family.

just two more days until christmas, and the holiday rush is here. travelers are headed to the airport as last minute shoppers hit the stores. some retailers are staying open 24 hours until christmas eve. and today is expected to be the second busiest shopping day of the year. abc 7 news reporter katie utehs has the story. >> reporter: the sound of last minute christmas shopping. retailers like kohl's and toys "r" us are keeping select stores open 24 hours a day until christmas eve. >> i think that's awesome. >> reporter: she notes that some are saving up money for gifts right until the holiday. retailers are ready to accommodate. >> it's a smart business move, of course. as long as you stay open, the more money you'll make, right? >> reporter: what do the lines look like? >> person, person, person, person, person. >> it's a thinner crowd, not as many people here for 5:00 in the morning. if you really don't want to deal with the crowds, come see us at 3:00 in the morning. >> reporter: alison jones at

kohl's says you can't beat an actual store. >> online ordering is not an option anymore. it's not going to make it. >> reporter: bay area roads are bustling with shoppers and people heading out of town. >> we left early to anticipate traffic. it wasn't really too bad, it wasn't as bad as i anticipated. >> reporter: airports are experiencing some arrival delays, but departures at oakland international look clear. >> i can't wait to seagramy and papa ty-ty. >> reporter: good news for eager young travelers. >> i'm really excited to see my grandparents. i'm really excited to hang out with my family. >> reporter: in the east bay, katie utehs, abc 7 news. a spare the air alert has been issued through tomorrow. you can see the haze in the air from our sutro tower camera yesterday, during winter spare the air alerts wood burning is banned because it is the biggest source of pollution this season.

meteorologist lisa argen is here now tracking the accuweather forecast for us. >> we have temperatures in a narrow range today because we're going to be seeing a lot of those high clouds, and therefore from the coasts or inland valleys, just a couple of degrees' difference. this morning we're mainly in the 30s and 40s from our sutro tower camera. still some 30s in the outlying areas. more like the mid- and upper 30s, so certainly not as cold as it's been. we've got that going for us. but do we have any rain? i'll have the answers coming up next. >> lisa, we'll see you soon, thank you. coming up, a bright light in the sky sent people into a frenzy to start the holiday weekend. to many this definitely seemed like a ufo. also ahead, three years ago a young girl had her bike stolen from a san jose neighborhood. find out how that crime turned into a holiday block

we're learning more about the moments leading up to the death of san francisco's late mayor. sources tell "the chronicle" ed lee was conscious and talking in the ambulance after he collapsed in a safeway store on december 11th. he died of a heart atts later a. you'll have to wait a little longer before you can enjoy some dungeness crab. fish and wildlife officials say dungeness crab season has been delayed again until january 15th. the crab has not met quality testing standards. officials say no vessel can mendocino

and humboldt countys. this is the last delay that fish and wildlife can issue because of quality testing. presents, pizza, and community spirit. the santa clara county sheriff's office hosted a holiday block party in san jose last night, an event born from a crime that happened in the neighborhood a couple of years ago. abc 7 news reporter katie marzullo has the story from the south bay. >> thank you for giving out toys to the children. >> reporter: madeleine drive in east san jose hasn't always had so much holiday cheer. three years ago a little girl had her bike stolen. santa clara deputies responded but didn't find the thief. >> we were working christmas night. i decided to come over here and bring one present to the little girl. >> reporter: sergeant jeremy jones felt badly about her bike. plus he grew up here too. >> the little girl comes out and says, thank you so much, but can i give this to my neighbor or do you have another present? >> reporter: he and his colleagues went to the only open store, a rite aid, and bought as

many presents as they could. that night santa paws was born. that night they brought 600 pizzas and a taco truck. >> just to spread the holiday cheer, that's enough for me. >> reporter: there's a young man here from tracy. he received a special invitation after connecting with the k9 unit on facebook. elias gomez was diagnosed with stage 4 hodgkin's lymphoma last year. sergeant jones wanted to make sure this was a christmas that he and his family would never forget. >> i was speechless, it was crazy. they got me a tv. >> i truly did not expect any of this. wow. >> reporter: santa himself would be proud. in san jose, katie marzullo, abc 7 news. in the north bay, riebli elementary school in santa rosa has been closed since the north bay wildfires swept through in october. flames didn't touch the building, but there was a lot of smoke damage. abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez was there as students

made a triumphant return. >> reporter: there were signs with farewell messages for riebli students. nearly 500 of them had been transferred to two local elementary schools immediately after the destructive fires in sonoma county. now it was safe to return to their beloved school. >> we lost our house in the neighborhood too. so it's just, this is riebli. this is what it's all about. and so exciting just to be back here. >> reporter: the damage from the smoke and the toxic air around the school made conditions unsafe. air monitors are still in place. [ sirens ] several local law enforcement agencies outdid themselves, providing a grand escort as parents greeted the children, some in tears, others with great pride. >> i was thinking, happy that everybody is happy that they're back at riebli and feeling more a part of riebli. >> reporter: everett johnson and his family lost their home in

the mark west springs neighborhood. they say this year it will be more meaningful. >> everything means more. you lose your house, and it means more. school. >> reporter: the school officially reopens on january 8th. it was important for the students and their families to make the transition now, before the holidays. >> we also wanted parents and children to see that the school is here, it's strong, it's ready to go. >> this was a hard year. and we're home. we're home. ♪ we wish you a merry christmas ♪ >> reporter: in santa rosa, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. ♪ and a happy new year rosie the riveter museum in richmond has received a gift. these coveralls by the late sue graham, who worked at lowry air base in denver during world war ii.

she modified airplanes with cameras and other specialized equipment. she died in august at 92 years of age. her children donated the coveralls to honor their mother and all women who played such an important role for america during that time. a surfing accident left an emergency room physician close to death last month. despite a broken neck, he's making remarkable progress. matthew wechsler is starting to walk and regain the use of his hands, legs, and feet with a special device to stop him from falling. doctors at zuckerberg san francisco general used a rare technique to monitor the exact amount of blood flowing to his spinal cord during surgery. >> to be surprised as an adult is a rare and beautiful thing. and i have been fortunate to be surprised almost every day. >> to round off his treatment, he creates art using the medical devices around him. doctors say wechsler could be back working in the emergency room sometime next year.

last night's spacex launch sent social media into a frenzy. >> three, two, one -- liftoff. >> the falcon 9 blasted off from vandenberg air force base on the central coast just about 5:30. the company is sending ten satellites into orbit. many didn't know the launch was coming and took to social media wondering if the weird light was a ufo. you can see why. this is video an abc 7 news viewer shared with us. the bright light going across the sky did not look like a rocket. if you have photos or video of what you saw, send them to us using the hashtag #abc7now. we have a slide show on our facebook page. elon musk tweeted, "it was definitely aliens." a short time later he tweeted this video along with the caption, "nuclear alien ufo from north korea." starting today, visitors heading to the golden gate

bridge for the holiday season will face restricted parking on both ends of the bridge. there are a limited number of parking spots inside the bridge lots. the restrictions are meant to ease the severe traffic backup that often develops as visitors flock to the bridge. district officials recommend visitors use public transit, taxis, ride shares, or park in nearby overflow lots. the restrictions will be enforced from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. today through the 1st. good saturday morning to you. we're waking up with a good deal of cloud cover that's keeping us insulated and milder this morning by at least ten degrees in some of the coldest neighbors, because remember, yesterday you were in the low to mid-20s for some of our protected valleys. cloud cover streaming in from north to south with rain staying well to the north. we'll flirt a little bit with extreme northern california but it looks like it will miss us entirely. 36 santa rosa, good morning,

napa, 39 for you, certainly chilly out there but not as cold as it could be. a little bit warmer this morning, looking for this mild pattern to last through the holiday weekend. but a little less in the way of bright sunshine. we'll have the high to mid-clouds, but it will be looking dry, not only through this week but right on through the end of the year. so unfortunately, we will hold on to this big dome of high pressure that's been protecting us and keeping the pollutants close to the surface. we have a spare the air alert. there are some holes in overcast here. so partly to mostly cloudy into the overnight hours. and then into your christmas eve, we still have the partly to mostly cloudy skies. but the rain line is staying well to the north. so if you are headed to the south or east, anywhere in between, looking at numbers from the mid-50s in yosemite down to the upper 60s in los angeles, mid-60s for you in palm springs and san diego.

but into the mountains, of course they're making snow, overnight lows in the 20s. afternoon highs near 50 with the clouds today and tomorrow, and a little bit brighter on christmas morning. wish that we could bring in some snow. but unfortunately it's not boding well for the entire month of december. maybe just a couple of hundredths is what we've had all month long. 58 in oakland and fremont today, as well as napa. 56 in san francisco. santa cruz, we'll hit about 61 as well as morgan hill. as we look at the overnight lows, certainly chilly but not as cold as it's been. mid-30s santa rosa, livermore 37. 41 in oakland. 42 in san mateo. christmas day, waking up to more 30s and 40s with the cloud cover. peeks of sun with mid-50s throughout the afternoon. then by 4:00, we will see some 60s away from the coast, low 60s around the bay, mid-60s inland. and then evening hours, it gets pretty cool early, with

at your local mercedes-benz dealer. mercedes-benz. the best or nothing. >> announcer: good morning, north bay. let's get up and get going. this is "abc 7 mornings." good morning and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. we're starting this half hour with a quick look at the weather. meteorologist lisa argen is tracking conditions where you live. hi, lisa. >> hey, chris, good morning to you. a cool start to your day but not as cold as it has been. right now it's 36 in santa rosa. that's certainly chilly. 37 in livermore. up from yesterday's readings in the 20s. 42 in oakland, 46 in san francisco, 40 in san jose. the reason being lots of cloud cover bringing us from three to 14 degrees warmer from this time yesterday. but with this big ridge of high pressure over us, it's keeping the pollutants at the surface.

we do have a spare of air alert for the entire weekend. you may notice it in the north bay, the coast, the central bay, and the inland east bay. sfo, no delays right now. but throughout the rest of the day, notice temperatures will be coming up into the 50s by noontime, low to mid-50s with partly cloudy skies and by 4:00, we're still in the mid-50s. that sun setting at 4:55. with the partly cloudy skies, another milder evening tonight. we'll talk about christmas eve, christmas day, and whether or not we can get some rain in our extended outlook coming up, chris. >> lisa, thank you. now to the latest on yesterday's arrest of a former marine accused of planning an attack on pier 39 in san francisco on christmas day. authorities say everitt aaron jameson was inspired by isis and the deadly halloween terror attack in new york city. abc 7 news senior justice correspondent pierre thomas has the latest. >> reporter: the alleged target, san francisco on christmas day

when it could be packed with holiday revellers. the fbi says this tow truck driver was secretly planning a yuletide massacre. everitt aaron jameson, accused of being an isis sympathizer, a man who the fbi says celebrated the new york attack on halloween that left 11 people dead. he told fbi informants, "i'm glad to know we muslims are finally hitting back." 's he's a former marine recruiter and sharpshooter. he described himself to the informant as a muslim convert, adding, "this is what will make me more useful. i can blend in." fbi agents searched his home and found fireworks and a handwritten martyrdom note specifically mentioned president trump. pierre thomas, abc news, washington.

president trump is in mar-a-lago this morning after signing a tax cut bill into law surrounded by cameras in the oval office. abc 7 news reporter david wright explains what the president is looking to do in the new year. >> so this is the bill right here. and we're very proud of it. >> reporter: this may be the most sweeping overhaul of the tax code in a generation. >> that's your bill. >> reporter: this signing ceremony was a rush job. >> i did a rush job today, it's not fancy, but it's the oval office. it's the great oval office. >> reporter: the president, like someone who can't wait to open his christmas present. >> i was going to wait for a formal signing sometime in early january but then i watched the news this morning and they were all saying, will he keep his promise, will he sign it by christmas? will he sign it by christmas? and i called downstairs, i said, get it ready, we have to sign it now. >> reporter: traditionally the bill's strongest champions on capitol hill would get the pens used to sign it as a keepsake. congressional leaders weren't even there. >> here you go, folks, you want

the box with it or not, huh? >> reporter: so the president handed out the ceremonial pens like stocking stuffers. he calls the tax cuts a christmas present to the middle class. and most americans will see their taxes go down, but only temporarily. the biggest cuts will benefit corporations and those cuts are permanent. president trump's real estate empire certainly stands to gain. but how much? hard to tell. >> reporter: mr. president, are the american people ever going to see your tax returns? >> reporter: because the president still refuses to disclose what he pays. david wright, abc news, washington. the new tax law is already raising fears among charities in the bay area. organizations like the san francisco marin food bank rely on smaller donations from families and individuals. they say many of those donors have relied on a tax deduction to defray the cost of buying food and canned goods. >> this year's doubling of the

standard deduction will mean many people will not see a line that they can take a tax deduction for their charitable giving. there will be a lack of incentive, a lack of reward, a difference they didn't see this year. we're concerned people will elect not to give next year. >> organizers at the food bank say they've also worried about cuts to safety net programs being proposed by republicans. they say cutbacks in programs like social security or food stamps would put even more pressure on charities to help feed lower income families. did i fall -- did you fall victim to russian propaganda during the election? facebook has a new page in the help center that lets you see if you liked or followed pages that have links to the internet research agency, the russian company known for spreading misinformation during the 2016 presidential election.

the new tool doesn't notify users if they're following other fake news outlets. it's a big holiday weekend for meghan markle. on monday she shares her first christmas with her future in-laws which include two future kings and of course queen elizabeth. abc 7 news reporter molly hunter has more. >> reporter: it's an early christmas treat for all you royal watchers. those engagement photos we've been anxiously awaiting. meghan markle peeks out from prince harry's burbury coat. her sparkling ring on display. she's wrapped in a victoria beckham sweater. in the second one, harry is sporting a navy suit and meghan an evening dress. and a third, more candid shot captures the two walking. snapped by the british foreign photographer alexei lubinsky. the photo shoot happened at windsor where of course the couple will tie the knot in may. in a few days, they headed for another royal residence. breaking with tradition,

alongside the queen in their holiday best. molly hunter, abc news at kensington palace. regulars of trader vic's are flocking back to the restaurant to say one last goodbye to claudette lum, retiring after 50 years. she tells abc 7 news reporter elissa harrington it was more than just a job. >> they'll never replace her, never. >> reporter: she's an icon of trader vic's. now long time hostess claudette lum is saying her last aloha. she's decided to retire after 57 years with the restaurant. her final shift, new year's eve. >> i'm 80 years old and i've been working all my life. and now i want to enjoy my family. >> reporter: she was first hired at the trader vic's in san francisco in 1960. she worked as a hat check girl and continued up the ranks to

for the next couple of days. subtle changes to make it feel a little bit more like what it should be around here, with higher dew points, slightly higher temperatures. but yes, we want rain, right? that's not going to happen. because of that we have a spare the air alert today and tomorrow, because the air quality certainly is less than ideal, with the area of high pressure pushing down on the atmosphere. we have poor air quality. today in the north bay, once again, coast and central bay and the inland east bay, so no wood burning through christmas eve, unfortunately, because we aren't getting any significant wind in here. and when we do, it looks like into monday, christmas day, things should be a little better. a live look outside from mt. tam, you can see the beginning of the sunrise, where you see that cloud cover. as a result, that will keep temperatures down a little bit today. and as well, with the high cloud cover, we're going to see the overnight lows come out. so not only today, but tomorrow,

and even into christmas. if you've had enough of those 20s and subfreezing temperatures, scraping your car, we'll get a break from that. the high clouds and mid-level clouds staying around for the afternoon. pretty looking view with the glassy looking bay this morning. so looking at temperatures like this. low 40s for mountain view, 35 in gil gilroy. certainly cold there with san francisco coming in with a chilly 46. sfo, no delays yet, but the eastern seaboard could see them with snow from new england perhaps through virginia, some icy conditions. 36 in santa rosa, 39 novato, 34 by the delta. we have fog from santa rosa, livermore and fairfield. about five to five mile visibility. and 37 in the livermore valley. so nice vantage point here, where you can see the beginning of daylight and the high clouds streaming in overhead. not as cold, still frosty in some of the colder valleys, though. a milder pattern for the holiday

weekend. we'll get those dew points up a little bit. and so it shouldn't be as dry. and looking at a dry pattern through the end of the year. so that's not boding well for our snowpack or the rain. but we are looking at the clouds throughout the day today. your hour by hour forecast won't be thick. they'll be high and thin. and so we'll get a little bit of sunshine. by early tomorrow morning, we still have the cloud cover. that's why we'll be a little bit milder and the rain line stays well to the north. here is the snow in the mountains. 25 for overnight lows, both tonight and tomorrow, highs around 50 with the clouds right on through christmas day. and back home, we're looking at mid-50s san francisco, 56. look for 61 down in santa cruz. upper 50s for concord, antioch and fremont. lows tonight, cold but we won't get into the 20s, the cloud cover keeping us in the 30s and 40s. the accuweather seven-day forecast, warmer mornings, slightly cooler afternoons, really through tomorrow. and looking at temperatures on
