>> announcer: good morning bay area. let's get up and get going. this is "abc 7 mornings." it's saturday, december 23rd. good morning and thanks for being with us. i'm chris nguyen. meteorologist lisa argen is tracking live doppler 7 for us. hi, lisa. > hey, chris. here's a look at live doppler 7. temperatures are cool but we're certainly up from where we were yesterday. the high clouds will continue to stream into the bay area today. a live look shows them, 46 gilroy, 43 mountain view, oakland, and half moon bay. emeryville, 35 by the dell did a, napa at 38. in the 40s. by 1:00, mid-50s for most underneath the cloudy sky. by 7:00 tonight, yes, we're in the 50s as well. the clouds are keeping us milder. tonight, spare the air alert

through the weekend. we'll talk about our rain chances for the end of the year coming up, chris. >> lisa, thank you. now to developing news out of the south bay. deputies have a suspect in custody after a shooting at a bar and bowling alley and cupertino. santa clara sheriff's deputies were called to the location at 10:30 last night. witnesses say a fight broke out at a party for a local rapper. then gunshots. >> i ran through the hallway of the bowling alley. i was ducking underneath where they stage the balls. and i went to go into the girls' bathroom when i heard gunshots on the other side of the lockers. >> just a terrifying scene. deputies say one person was shot in the leg. they arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting and found two guns at the scene. this morning they're anything -- asking anyone with video or information about the incident to contact authorities. this morning, we're learning more about the man accused of

plotting a terror attack at san francisco's pier 39. the suspect is from the central valley but he was just here in the bay area on sunday at the raiders game with his dad. everitt aaron jameson appeared in a federal court in fresno yesterday afternoon, accused in a criminal complaint of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and plotting an attack. abc 7 news reporter dion lim has the details from pier 39. >> reporter: pier 39, a hub of holiday activity popular with tourists, targeted in a planned christmastime terrorist attack. >> it's a popular place to be. yeah, it's very scary. >> reporter: this is the suspect, everitt jameson. according to a federal criminal complaint, the fbi was first alerted to him after a series of social media posts supporting terrorism. the fbi says the tow truck driver from modesto expressed admiration for the halloween terror attack in new york city that killed eight people and planned to use a truck in the attack on pier 39. jameson had worked at anderson's

towing in modesto since august. >> this event brings terror way too close to home. >> reporter: in 2009, jameson served a short 4 1/2 months in the marines, earning a sharpshooter rifle qualification before being discharged for not disclosing his asthma. he told fbi informants, "i have been trained in combat and things of war. anything for allah. he is the best of planners." he told the fbi agent he could carry out the attack this week. jameson said christmas would be the perfect day. >> no warning signs or nothing. >> reporter: we spoke to his father, who was shocked at the fbi's findings. >> you don't kill people. you don't blow up people. you know what i mean? you don't do that. >> reporter: the fbi executed a search warrant on jameson's home and found fireworks, firearms, and a last will and testament. jameson's attorney says his client will plead not guilty to any charges brought against him. in san francisco, dion lim, abc 7 news.

former fbi counterterrorism specialist steve gomez said a big concern for law enforcement in this case is jameson's background as a marine. >> he had received extensive training on the use of weapons and military tactics. when jameson was discharged from the marine corps, that may have created bitterness in him which ultimately led to the idea of committing an attack on behalf of isis. >> gomez reiterated the importance of the public alerting law enforcement to say something if they see something especially if it's online. the feds looked at the possibility of an attack on san francisco's new year's eve celebration. there's no information about a specific credible threat, but as always, the fbi and department of homeland security are concerned about attacks at events where the public are gathered. the san francisco police department says, during the holiday season, the public will

notice an increased law enforcement presence in shopping corridors and at our city's attractions. as always, authorities are urging anyone to report any suspicious activity. abc 7 news was the first to send out a push alert on the arrest of the terror suspect on the abc 7 news app. download our upgraded app and enable push alerts to get updates like the ones we sent out yesterday morning. in other headlines, officials say the massive thomas fire in southern california is now the largest in state history. the fire has charred more than 273,000 acres and destroyed more than 1,000 buildings. containment is up to 65%. these san rafael firefighters are back home after fighting the thomas fire. they tweeted out these photos of their efforts on the front line. today firefighters will hold a memorial for a cal fire engineer who died while responding to the thomas fire. governor jerry brown is expected to attend. cory iverson died last thursday in ventura county. he leaves behind his wife, who is expecting their second child,

and his 2-year-old daughter. a gofundme account has been set up to help the family. one of the most daunting tasks for survivors of the north bay wildfires is filing insurance claims that asks victims to inventory everything they own. the california insurance commissioner has been asking insurance companies to streamline the process by not requiring a detailed list. >> their most valid possessions, everything they had in this world. to ask them to inventory all that adds insult to injury, is a very emotionally trying thing to do and overwhelming for a lot of people. >> some insurance providers are already fulfilling that request. so far, insurance claims from the north bay wildfires have totaled more than $9 billion. on a lighter note, with just two more days to go until christmas, and the holiday rush is here. travelers are headed to the airport as last minute shoppers hit the stores.

some retailers are staying open 24 hours until christmas eve. and today is expected to be the second busiest shopping day of the year. abc 7 news reporter katie utehs has the story. >> reporter: the sound of last minute christmas shopping. retailers like kohl's and toys "r" us are keeping select stores open 24 hours a day until christmas eve. >> i think that's awesome. >> reporter: she notes that some are saving up money for gifts right until the holiday. retailers are ready to accommodate. >> it's a smart business move, of course. as long as you stay open, the more money you'll make, right? >> reporter: what do the lines look like? >> person, person, person, person, person. >> it's a thinner crowd, not as many people here for 5:00 in the morning. if you really don't want to deal with the crowds, come see us at 3:00 in the morning. >> reporter: alison jones at kohl's says you can't beat an actual store. this close to the holiday. >> online ordering is not an option anymore. it's not going to make it. >> reporter: bay area roads are bustling with shoppers and

straining lights in the sky turn into a social memoranda frenzy. many people in southern california thought they saw a ufo but it was actually a rocket launch. veronica miracle has the story from our sister station in los angeles. >> reporter: from the moment of spacex falcon 9 rocket took off, humans on earth were mystified. >> we were stared. this was a weird thing in the sky. >> reporter: she thought it was a comet. >> it could come down. i was thinking different ways to get out.

>> reporter: but daniel gutierrez was convinced for a moment we had visitors. >> we are experiencing an alien invasion. >> we were tripping out and freaking out. >> reporter: the company's ceo, elon musk, even playing into the mass confusion, tweeting a video of the rocket with the caption, "nuclear alien ufo from north korea." >> three, two, one, liftoff. >> reporter: in reality, the orb of light was the 18th and final rocket launch for elon musk's private aerospace company. the director of the observatory said the timing of the launch made it extremely visible. >> coming after the sun went down, the launch vapor trail picked up the light from the sun and made a spectacular vision of cloud and flame and color. >> reporter: the rocket, which took off from vandenberg air force base, propelled ten satellites in orbit for spacex's client, who is putting an army of satellites into orbit to track flights and ships in

realtime all over the world. >> it was gorgeous. it was beautiful. nobody knew what was going on. >> reporter: veronica miracle, abc 7 news. we're learning more about the moments leading up to the death of san francisco's late mayor. sources tell "the chronicle" ed lee was conscious and talking in the ambulance after he collapsed in a safeway store on december 11th. he died of a heart attack three hours later at the hospital. presents, pizza, and community spirit. the santa clara county sheriff's office hosted a holiday block party in san jose last night, an event born from a crime that happened in the neighborhood a couple of years ago. abc 7 news reporter katie marzullo has the story from the south bay. >> thank you for giving out toys to the children. >> reporter: madeleine drive in east san jose hasn't always had so much holiday cheer. three years ago a little girl had her bike stolen. santa clara deputies responded but didn't find the thief. >> we were working christmas night. i decided to come over here and

bring one present to the little girl. >> reporter: sergeant jeremy jones felt badly about her bike. plus he grew up here too. >> the little girl comes out and says, thank you so much, but can i give this to my neighbor or do you have another present? >> reporter: he and his colleagues went to the only open store, a rite aid, and bought as many presents as they could. that night santa paws was born. this year they brought more than 600 donated toys, shoes, and pizzas and a taco truck. >> just to spread the holiday cheer, that's enough for me. >> reporter: there's a young man here from tracy. he received a special invitation after connecting with the k9 unit on facebook. elias gomez was diagnosed with stage 4 hodgkin's lymphoma last year. sergeant jones wanted to make sure this was a christmas that he and his family would never forget. >> i was speechless, it was crazy. they got me a tv. >> i truly did not expect any of this. wow.

>> reporter: santa himself would be proud. in san jose, katie marzullo, abc 7 news. several coyotes were spotted roaming in a san francisco neighborhood around 8:00 yesterday morning in the ingleside terrace neighborhood near san francisco state university. one person saw four coyotes in the street. two were seen a couple of blocks away and another was spotted in park. san francisco animal care and control says coyotes sightings are common this time of year, as younger coyotes look for their own territory. you'll have to wait a little longer before you can enjoy some dungeness crab. fish and wildlife officials say dungeness crab season has been delayed again until january 15th. the crab has not met quality testing standards. officials say no vessel can

catch dungeness right now in mendocino and humboldt countys. this is the last delay that fish and wildlife can issue because of quality testing. restrictions are meant to ease the severe traffic backup that develops as visitors flock to the bridge. district officials recommend visitors use public transit, taxis, ride shares, or park in nearby overflow lots. the restrictions will be enforced today through january 1st, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. good morning, everyone. saturday morning, look at all the cloud cover from live doppler 7. with it we've had some very pretty sunrises and also it hasn't been at cold. the insulating blanket has allowed for radiational cooling to stay away from the entire state. you can see the cloud cover from north all the way down through the central coast. when we get the clear sky,

that's when the warmth evaporates into the atmosphere. the cloud cover, well, thanks to that, it's a pretty start here for mt. tam. 41 san jose, 43 in half moon bay. gilroy is a cool 36. and look at the air quality. you can tell here from our vollmer peak camera that the particulate matter is being trapped at the surface due to the big dome of high pressure that will flatten out in the next day or so. we'll have a weak weather system ride over the top of it. that's also helping to aid in the cloud cover above. so we have the smog and the pollutants at the surface, mid- and high level clouds above. 38 napa, 34 by the delta. even a little fog out there in livermore at 35 degrees. so from sutro, yeah, this is what we get this time of year. with the haze and temperatures will be just a little cooler today due to less sunshine. so as we get through the morning, you'll notice that it's not as frosty. the milder pattern stays in

place for the entire weekend. it looks like through the end of the year, we're staying dry. we're going to get sunnier and milder after the christmas holidays. so we're keeping that spare the air alert right on through sunday with the poor air quality, north bay, coast, central bay, inland east bay. you can see it from the pictures, it's just a little bit better. the south end of the bay and over around towards fremont, not looking too bad. but you are noticing the cloud cover, our hour by hour forecast today shows that by 2:00, they're thinning out a bit. we'll call it partly cloudy. but through the overnight hours, more clouds. ad then for christmas eve, looking at another mild afternoon. so not as cold in the morning, but with the cloud cover we'll keep the temperatures fairly similar to today's for the second half of your weekend. 60 in monterey, 54 in yosemite. if you're traveling to the mountains, no problems there or even southern california, sunner and milder there.

43. 46 in the city. gray for our friends in san jose. it's in the upper 30s in napa with 35 in livermore. a little bit of fog, but everyone is warmer, anywhere from three to six degrees warmer now compared to yesterday at this hour. a spare the air alert today and tomorrow for poor air quality for most of us. and as we go through the afternoon, the clouds hang on, mid- and upper 50s with 40s for the evening out. the overnight lows milder as well, chris. >> lisa, thank you. now to the latest on yesterday's arrest of a former marine accused of planning an attack on pier 39 in san francisco on christmas day. authorities say everitt aaron jameson was inspired by isis and the deadly halloween terror attack in new york city. meanwhile in pennsylvania, authorities are investigating whether a series of shootings targeting police officers was an act of terror. police say the suspect, now dead, had recently traveled to the middle east. abc news reporter gloria rivera

has the details. >> he was not afraid to fire at different law enforcement officers. >> reporter: this morning, officials are investigating if a string of shootings targeting law enforcement friday in harrisburg was an act of terror. >> we believe only one individual was responsible for the shootings. >> reporter: police say officers shot and killed a 51-year-old man after he fired on them, riddling a police car with bullets and shooting a state trooper. officials say the suspect has advertise to the middle east and recently traveled there. this as authorities arrested a suspected isis sympathizer in california. authorities say 26-year-old everitt aaron jameson, a former marine who was trained as a sharpshooter, was planning a christmas day attack. his target one of san francisco's most popular spots, fisherman's wharf. sa jameson is accused of being an isis sympathizer. his father is in shock.

>> that's not how he was raised. >> reporter: in october, two fbi undercover agents formed an online relationship with jameson after noticing his support for isis on his facebook account. >> this kind of tip could have come from anybody in the public. that's what the fbi and law enforcement wants in dealing with potential terrorists committing attacks in the u.s. >> reporter: the fbi acted quickly, searching jameson's home in california, finding firearms and a handwritten note. >> one of the agents mistakenly called him from an identifiable d.c. number. jameson then told the other agent he had reconsidered going through with his attack. police in las vegas are taking extra precautions to protect pedestrians. nearly 800 metal barriers have been installed on the las vegas strip. 8,000 more will be up by the end of next year. these bars protect pedestrians

from drivers. two years ago, a woman intentionally plowed her car into a crowd, killing one person and injuring 37 others. president trump is spending the holidays in florida after celebrating a big one for his administration. yesterday he signed into law the gop's $1.5 trillion tax plan. abc news reporter kenneth moton shows us what this means for your bottom line. >> reporter: a warm reception for the president in west palm beach, the president shaking hands, kissing babies, apparently feeling good after his first major legislative victory. >> so this is the bill right here. >> reporter: before leaving washington, trump in the oval office signing that $1.5 trillion tax bill into law. >> and i consider this very much a bill for the middle class and a bill for jobs. >> reporter: democrats disagree, not one supporting the major tax overhaul. >> this has been a year of lost,

squandered opportunities. we've always been open to working with the president when we believe it benefits the american people. >> reporter: tax changes are already in the works. the irs sent out a notice that new withholding guidelines are on the way. and taxpayers will begin seeing the changes in their paychecks as early as february. but people in high tax states are bracing. many in new york, new jersey, and california expected to pay a lot more under the new tax law. new york governor andrew cuomo signed an executive order on friday to allow residents to prepay next year's property taxes. >> this is an economic dagger because it effectively raises our income tax and property tax 20, 25%. >> reporter: the president ready to move on to other big issues in 2018. >> i really do believe we're going to have a lot of by pa bipartisan work done, and maybe we start with infrastructure. >> the new tax law is already

raising fears among charities in the bay area. organizations like the san francisco marin food bank rely on smaller donations from families and individuals. they say many of those donors have relied on a tax deduction to help defray the cost of buying foods and canned goods. >> this year's doubling of the standard deduction is going to mean many people will not see a line that they can take a tax deduction for their charitable giving. so it's going to be lack of incentive, a lack of reward, a difference that they didn't see this year. and we're concerned that people will elect not to give next year. >> organizers at the food bank say they're also worried about cuts to safety net programs being proposed by republicans. they say cutbacks in programs like social security or food stamps would put even more pressure on charities to help feed lower income families. did you fall victim to russian propaganda during the election? facebook has a new page in the help center that lets you see if

looking at poor air quality. we're asking you not to burn unless it's your only source of heating. from mt. tam, a few pretty colors there for you with the cloud cover. temperatures are chilly in spots. we do have some areas of frosty conditions, but certainly not as cold as it's been the last couple of mornings, because of all the cloud cover. we widen the view. where is the rain? it's evaporating even to the north of us. we thought at one point we could get a glancing blow on christmas day, but it doesn't look like that will happen. 43 in oakland and mountain view, as well as half moon bay. 37 in gilroy. 48 in the city. this is that picture i was talking about, where we've got that ridge of high pressure pushing down on the atmosphere, and it's really trapping in all the pollutants here. not a lot of mixing. and as a result, this is what we get. but we are looking at higher relative humidity. you may notice your skin not as
