learned of the alleged plot. an ex-marine planned to stage the attack around christmas. he's now in jail. >> you can't get rattled when things like this happen. this is our country. this is america. >> there are more inherent dangers in everything we do, but i trust in the security i've seen around here. >> reporter: according to a federal criminal complaint he had red cal jihadi believes and social media posts that supported terrorism. his family members in modesto are in shock. >> it's not my nephew they're talking about, i can't explain it any other way. >> reporter: a big take away investigators hope others online take notice to this kind of radicalism. >> even though this was an fbi informant that alerted the fbi, this kind of tip could have came from anybody in the public. >> reporter: jamison has a hearing scheduled january 5th. his attorney says his client will plead not guilty to any

a number of trunk break-ins. so they're suggesting everybody carry everything that they purchase until they are ready to leave the shopping center here. not surprisingly we met up with a number of shoppers who are not exactly following that advice. >> we through a little toy in the trunk and we're like we're going to the next place. so you don't want to hang onto it. >> you see that in the commercials but it doesn't work out so well. yeah, carrying 15 bags. >> reporter: we did talk to a last individual who told us police officers were actually putting report cards on people's vehicles, sort of grading them about how safe their vehicle was, sort of about how their belongings were not out of sight. the advice here is to basically carry everything until you're ready to leave the shopping center. that old advice to put

everything in the trunk unfortunately isn't working because the thieves are seeing people putting things in their trunks and when they leave the vehicle, they become the target. the advice here is just do all of your shopping or i guess make multiple trips. melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. some much needed advice, thank you. the sheriffs office say they've wrapped up an investigation into female detainees being held in richmond. they say almost all of them are unfounded including one saying detainees were locked down 23 hours a day. the sheriff adds they do have keys to their rooms as well. the health officials will also review a couple of complaints about health care. investigators say they went through hours of surveillance video recordings and interviewed dozens of witnesses. a celebration of life today was held for the firefighter who

died while battling the thomas fire. bagpipers played amazing grace as fallen firefighter cory iverson cal fire shield and american flag were presented to his family. the memorial was held in san diego whereiverson was based. he leaves behind a 2-year-old daughter and wife. the couple were execing their second child. new developments in the thomas fire. it is now the largest wildfire in california history. the fire has burned more than 273,000 acres in southern california, containment remains at 65%. more than 700 homes have been destroyed since the fire started nearly three weeks ago. vacation orders remain in effect for some residents of ventura and santa barbara count az. long time politician bill lock leer apparently has a new

with the raise in cigarette taxes earlier this year convenience stores in central valley are seeing a spike in crime. >> thieves are stealing cartons of cigarettes. and one heist turned into a brutal encounter with one clerk. >> reporter: surveillance video shows the moment a suspect dives behind the cash register. the beginning of a 10 minute struggle all for 150 cartons of cigarettes. >> punched him, hit him, sprayed him in the face with some sprays and stuff. actually had a taser also. zip tied his hands.

>> reporter: lieutenant david has noticed the most sought out item thieves are after lately is cigarettes. now that the tobacco tax raised the price, suspects know their guaranteed value and easy to resell for cash. >> the robbers in this situation, in this incident they never touched the cash register at all. >> reporter: cigarettes were also taken recently during a deadly mini mart robbery in modara. the clerk never fought back but was shot and killed as the suspects left. two men were arrested on charges of homicide. despite the serious injury to the clerk in the latest cigarette theft, he was an observant witness and able to help police solve the crime. >> he described it as scary, doesn't know what's going on. but the good thing was he was able to recognize voices and body movements to help identify the people and get them caught. >> reporter: detectives recovered 35 cases of cigarettes at a home just two blocks away

and it will be a chilly afternoon. temperatures slightly below average for this time of year, struggling to make it into the mid-50s. 53 the high in richmond, 55 the high in san francisco and oakland. 57 in san jose, and you will notice a bit of haze in our atmosphere. that's why we have another spare the air day in effect on sunday. if you are traveling on sunday we'll see that snow continue around chicago, and this system will actually move into new england and bring a white christmas for many there. the western half of the country is really quiet. one issue in seattle and portland, it's chilly. we will see a mix of rain and snow sunday. if you're traveling to the state of california, it's really quiet across the majority of the southern state. a little bit of rain in eureka, and it will be chilly with a temperature of 55 degrees. as we get you back into christmas day, it's a quiet holiday. it's cloudy.
