a sad start to this holiday. a chp patrol vehicle involved in a horrific crash overnight sending two officers to the hospital. southbound 880 is shut down just north of the highway 92 interchange in hayward. good morning. it is monday, december 25th. we want to get straight to abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live at eden medical center in castro valley. amy? >> reporter: hi, good morning, jessica. there is a chp car parked here at the e.r. they are not commenting on the officers' conditions. two were hurt. i've just been told the chp will be putting out a press release at 9:00 this morning. let's take a look at the crash scene on southbound 880. look at how smashed up that chp

patrol car is. this happened at midnight just north of the 92, and it happened in hayward. all lanes are closed. cars are being forced to exit. that is southbound going towards san jose. they have not said what happened. we are still waiting to hear how many cars were involved, how many people were hurt, why there was a crash at all. here is that car that i mentioned that's parked outside the e.r. so it does appear the two injured officers are getting some support here at the hospital this christmas morning. no word on when the highway will reopen. we will keep you posted as we get information. we are expecting a press release at 9:00. reporting live, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> okay, amy, thank you. auer thoughts are with the victims. a tough start to the holiday. we do want to thank you for joining us. i'm jessica castro alongside meteorologist mike nicco.

their homes overnight after a fire in brunell heights. you can see large flames in the distance. the fire department says the fire started just before 1:00 a.m. on prospect avenue flames damaged homes on other side. the cause, though, is still under investigation. the red cross was called in to help people displaced. fire lines and a hungry rodent may have sparked a house fire. the family that lives there was not home at the time. the damage could have been a lot worse if not for quick response from firefighters. and here is melanie woodrow. the first time in 20 years i've come across. >> a squirrel chewed through on san mateo drive energizing the

entire home with that surge of electricity looking for some place to ground. which is where the smoldering fire began. menlo park retired assistant chief noticed the fire while walking his dog. >> someone was ringing the doorbell. >> reporter: he told her to call 911. >> if he hadn't been walking the dog or notices fire could have been very bad. >> good is to be, good save. >> reporter: pg&e determined it was a squirrel that caused the fire and the fire marshal agreed. >> it is a problem around here. i'm not sure how to solve it. >> reporter: the fire got into the attic. the damage inside is minimal, about $5,000. it could be more costly once an electrician examines the damage. >> bad luck on christmas eve. >> reporter: firefighters return late this morning to put out a hot spot. no one was inside at the time of the fire and there were no

injuries. in menlo park, abc 7 news. and this morning cities across the nation are stepping up security as a precaution as crowds gather for holiday events. abc 7 news was in san francisco at pier 39 last night. on friday the fbi announced it prevented a planned christmas terror attack. 26-year-old ex-marine everitt jameson. despite the recent foiled threat it doesn't seem to be affecting anyone's christmas spirit here. authorities do want to remind the public if you see something, say something. jameson is scheduled for a court hearing january 5th. his attorney says he will plead not guilty to any charges brought against him. christmas eve got off to a soggy start for some neighbors in the south bay. abc 7 news was in san jose where crews responded to a broken water main that sent waves of water rushing through the streets. neighbors shared photos and

video with abc 7 news yesterday and this is marble arch avenue. neighbors heard a loud noise that ended up being a manhole cover. >> it shot up in the air and water was shooting 20 feet up and the water main broke and flooded a couple garages. it was about a foot of water in my garage. >> neighbors say crews told them an old valve may be to blame for the break. if you're still waiting for your holiday fedex package, you are not alone. the company warned of possible delivery delays due to weather. the company sent out an alert saying windy weather on friday night at its massive hub disrupted flights and that meant shipment delays on packages expected to arrive at their destination over the weekend, so they'll likely instead arrive some time this week. you can track your shipment status online at fedex.com. volunteers are keeping watch at one of the bay area's biggest landmarks hoping to protect

those most vulnerable during this holiday season. and some crews are spending their christmas fighting the thomas fire in southern california but they did get a special surprise. we'll show you. and weatherwise some unfortunate news if you like to wake up on christmas morning and have a fire in the fireplace. it is a spare the air day. we do have poor air quality just about everywhere except for the coast and central bay. wood burning is banned all day today, and how long is this going to last? through at least tomorrow. wednesday is looking like a day wednesday is looking like a day of better air quality.

welcome back. more than 1,500 firefighters are still fighting the thomas fire in southern california. the blaze is now 86% contained. officials don't expect it to be fully contained for nearly two more weeks. more than 1,000 homes have been destroyed and two people were killed including a firefighter at more than 281,000 acres, the thomas fire is the largest wildfire in state history. firefighters did enjoy a break when santa stopped by this weekend.

he paid firefighters a visit yesterday. they tweeted this photo of santa and mrs. claus as well. she was there, too, at the base camp. santa know as little about working during the holidays so can commission rate with them as they have a lot of work to do still on the thomas fire. but look at that, all smiles there, mike. >> especially the big kid on santa's lap. good morning, merry christmas. some of us waking up to frost. that's about as close as we're going to get to a white christmas. take a look at your temperatures in the south bay. we're not seeing the frost yet. 39 is as cool as we get in alum rock, saratoga,cupertcupertcupet 49 right now in san francisco. 12-hour planner today, high clouds and sunshine. we'll hang out in the upper 50s through 4:00. mid-50s if you're heading out this evening. in the east bay, 45 at 8:00 this

welcome back. the holidays can be a particularly difficult time for people emotionally especially those with no one to support them. there is a bay area group stepping up to try to save lives. lani rivera has the story. >> reporter: san francisco landmark draws crowds during the year. those who come alone raise concerns especially during the holidays. >> we're looking for people who come here alone and are displaying behavior that's emotional. >> reporter: part after group of volunteers called bridge watch angels. their sole purpose to look for signs of depression and suicide.

>> we look for signs, for common signs, someone pacing, someone inappropriately dressed for the weather. someone staring out into the distance, that 1,000-foot stare. >> reporter: they work in teams, wear arm bands, and their job is engagement. >> to listen, to unload the despair and tell us what's going on or what triggered them. >> they're on the bridge and helping others who have come to a point in their life they're going through a lot. >> reporter: since january of 2017 bridge watch angels and police conducted 235 suicide interventions. they're hopeful suicide intervention and barriers being built will save lives. a local south bay church has reached out to homeless people to make sure they are warm on christmas. the ministry in san jose gave out more than 100 blankets to

people living in nearby homeless encampments. the pastor says homeless people need more than just tents and tarps. he says there are about 7,600 homeless people in santa clara county. >> what we're doing is on a mission to save lives, trying to get the word out, raise awareness, and by getting a blanket under these conditions people expire at night, like last night, someone died in a homeless camp and it happens very frequently. >> reporter: the church wants people to know they accept blankets and other resources to give to the homeless not just during the holidays but all year round. and it's a christmas miracle for a pet owner and her cat who went missing from his florida home three years ago. this is video of raja back in his human's arms for the holidays just in time. stephanie and her family who now live in virginia drove about seven hours to westchester, pennsylvania, to make it happen.

stephanie thought he was stolen in 2014. last year a man brought raja in as a stray to the spca 1,000 miles away from his original home. he was then chipped. since the family moved it took searching to find them. here they are finally united for this christmas 2017. >> that's awesome. >> that is nice. did dyou get your cats any gift? >> a couple things, toys, better food. >> it's going to be a good 2018 for them. >> i hope so. one is really old, like 20, 21. the other is it like 2 now. the 2-year-old wants to play with the older one. the older one, whatever, dude. >> you just need toys for the young one. good day to stay indoors. >> spare the air, unfortunately. temperatures are nice. at times if you keep up with us and we'll keep up with the air quality we'll let you know when it's a good time to get outside. partly sunny and mild.

fewer clouds, a little cooler tonight and the remainder of the year is void of rain. you can see high clouds out there. were you out shopping yesterday? i was during the afternoon hours. a few sprinkles showed up on the windshield but that was it and they were tiny and less of a chance of that happening today. so let's jump right into our temperatures about 59 in san francisco and san mateo to 58 in richmond. the rest of us 60 to 63 degrees. 63 in concord, fairfield, san jose and santa rosa. as far as our temperatures tonight, mid to upper 30s. it all depends on how quickly the high clouds clear out. they'll clear out across the north bay faster than the rest of us. the rest of us in the low to mid-40s. the ban on wood burning banned midnight to tomorrow. who is waking up to a white christmas? pretty much all of new england

and then the snow belt is coming off the great lakes. a few pockets of snow from the siskiyous down to the rockies. now for tomorrow looks like much quieter. there will be some rain if you're trying to travel through houston and rain up around seattle and portland. what you're going to see are temperatures way too warm. upper 50s to mid-60s and the lack of rain all the way through new year's eve sunday. maybe next year we can get more rain. >> thank you. a warm story for you. santa is getting help to fulfill a wish from a girl whose selfless request has gone viral. an entire community in houston is coming together to help 9-year-old gomez. the family's home suffered damage during hurricane harvey, and her father is currently on dialysis. the girl asked santa to help her dad get better and to fix the

damaged home. >> my wish was my dad to get better because during the hurricane it started raining so hard and that's when the rooftop fell. >> a congressman posted her letter online and the response has been tremendous. an anonymous donor has helped pay for the family's back taxes. and the community group has offered to make repairs to their home. what a great holiday story. it's become the biggest rivalry in basketball. the warriors are taking on the cavaliers once again. the two teams met in the nba finals the past three years with the ws winning two of the series and lebron james is sending out his thoughts about working on christmas. look at this. lebron tweeted, quote, being away from my family for the holidays for work is the absolute worst!

to you. a fire forcing four people from their homes. look at this video sent from roger dawson. the fire started just before 1:00 a.m. in bernal heights near eugenia. the cause is still under investigation. the red cross was called in to help the people who were displaced. b.a.r.t. police investigating another robbery at one of its stations involving a group of teenagers. a man says he had his cell phone. the victim says a group of about a dozen teens punched him. police did detain but police couldn't identify any of the suspects. the victim was taken to the

hospital with minor injuries. pope francis delivered his christmas day message overnight and prayed for peace between israelis and palestinians and urged protection for myanmar groups. christmas is a time for turning fear into the power of charity. president trump and the first lady are spending time in florida. they attended midnight mass in palm beach. it's the same church where the trumps were married in the year 2005. earlier in the day the president offered season's greetings to u.s. troops overseas and fielded calls from kids tracking santa's progress through norad. north korea's foreign ministry is lashing out days after the united nations security council adopted u.s. sanctions over its nuclear weapons program. >> reporter: north korea not

mincing words in response to the new round of u.n. sanctions calling the strict measures an act of war. north korea also warned sunday the u.s. and other nations that support the sanctions will pay a heavy price. the comments come after the u.n. security council voted unanimously on friday to adopt u.s. drafted sanctions against north korea for its november missile test. >> as we have in the past we will match the choice of aggressive actions with actions of international sanction. >> nikki haley, the u.s. ambassador to the u.n., said the new sanctions will strangle north korea's energy supplies and tighten restrictions on smuggling. >> we have asked the north korean regime to choose the path of peace, and if they do, we would welcome them back into the community of nations. but pyongyang has chosen the path of isolation. >> reporter: rhett lugs 2397 cuts exports of gasoline, diesel

and other refined oil products by a total of 89%, bans exports of industrial equipment, machinery and vehicles to north korea. countries using workers from north korea must send them back in the next 24 months. requires countries to stop illegally providing oil through ship-to-ship transfers. this is the tenth round of sanctions against north korea passed by the u.n. since 2006. abc 7 news. on a lighter note still in south korea, i want to show you the troops stationed there. they were able to have a christmas meal. one played the role of santa and about 1,500 are there on the border with north korea. a full meal with egg slnog and christmas tree shaped cake. >> i feel pretty happy. i wish i was back home. if i was going to be anywhere i'm glad i'm here. i feel like we have a really

good setup as far as being deployed overseas goes. i'm happy i could be here. >> merry christmas! >> and a merry christmas to all of them. more than 28,000 u.s. troops are based in south korea to help defend against north korean hostility and maintain peace. in iran christians in mosul celebrated for the first year since isis was driven out of the area. thousands of christians fled prosecution with the islamic state forcing worshippers to pay a tax or even face death. some christians have returned saying the mass is a sign of life returning to mosul. worshippers prayed for peace. a new york city police officer was killed in the line of duty in july. her three children are now spending their first christmas without their mother. they'll spend it together in their new home thanks to the

kindness of others. >> reporter: it was a cold-blooded killing of a mother of three and a veteran of the nypd. >> my partner's shot! >> reporter: a deranged gunman murders the officer. her children thrust into a stark reality. eldest daughter now the guardian of twins, her 12-year-old siblings. >> i was really concerned about my brother and sister. i'm sorry. >> reporter: but just in time for christmas, neighbors and strangers raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy them a new apartment. furnished, complete with christmas decorations. >> oh, my gosh! >> it was really emotional that there are so many people who care about the well-being of me and my siblings and want us to have a nice place to ourselves. >> reporter: the home giving them all hope for the future. >> we've had to learn how to

move forward and it hasn't been the easiest road to go down, but, you know, the support me and my siblings received helps a lot. we would be in a much darker place if it weren't for that. >> reporter: and sweet reminders of the angel watching over them named mom. >> those we love don't go away. they walk beside us every day, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard but always near. hi, everybody. look at the sky developing from our roof camera here in downtown san francisco. it will be a pretty nice day. unfortunately, the air quality will be bad at times or at least poor. we have seen a reprieve in the north bay. you have switched from poor to moderate. the coast and central bay is moderate down from about the dumbarton bridge southward and eastward where we have the poor air quality.

even if you're not in that wood burning is banned today and tomorrow. unfortunately, our pattern really doesn't change much. we're bone-dry through the beginning of the new year and possibly up until the 5th of january. temperatures unless you're along the coast are cooler. official temperatures are in the 30s and 40s. we have 43 in oakland. 49 san francisco. pacifica, 47. down the peninsula, 41 until you get to san jose at 42. 45 in hayward. 36 in novato. as we head through 7:00, still a lot of upper 30s to mid-40s. notice the clouds may thin by noon especially across the south. temperatures to near 60. high clouds come back at 5:00. and then during the evening hours we'll be in the low to mid-50s. if you have a new coat, if it's

i do have some unfortunate news down to our south, a red flag warning, high fire danger from three rivers down getting into the grapevine. this will run all the way through 6:00 this evening. 68 in l.a. low to mid-60s through the central valley. if you're like me and have a split family but close enough you go to one in the morning and one in the afternoon, about 64 with high clouds. a look at tahoe. they're still trying to make snow. mother nature is not being cooperative. we're going to be in the low to mid-50s with not a single chance of a flake through the end of the year. jessica? >> snow struggles in tahoe. it is a white christmas for millions of people in the northeast and midwest. there is snow on the ground there. an arctic blast is bringing freezing and blustery

conditions. elizabeth herr has more. >> reporter: a white christmas for millions across the country, even mild cities like portland and seattle waking up to this rare december snow. enough snow for frosty the snowman to make this cameo and forcing drivers to turn to salt and a good push to get their cars moving again. for plow truck drivers, a busy night trying to stay ahead of the storm trying to avoid a repeat of scenes like this in maine, tow truck drivers using a rope to pull cars out of the ditch. >> roads are getting slick so have to be careful. it's freezing over. >> reporter: this morning winter weather alerts in effect coast to coast with parts of new england already cleaning up from all of this, now bracing for another foot of snow. >> if you don't have four-wheel drive, you're in trouble in the winter. >> reporter: that is unless you live in florida where 837 santa

surfers just set a new record for costumed surfers, this on the same day drivers in kansas were slipping and sliding on the roadways. and residents in nebraska spent their christmas eve clearing snow out of their driveway. in parts of north dakota and minnesota, forecasters say it will feel like 25 to 30 degrees below zero much of the day today. and that bitter cold moves into the northeast by tomorrow. reporting in new york, abc 7 news. >> ouch. they need the christmas sweaters. this morning the british royal family attended their own traditional church service. there was one break from tradition, know. actress meghan markle attended with prince harry. it was the first time someone who has yet to marry in has took part in the celebrations. christmas means another successful curbside drop-off

event for the st. anthony foundation in san francisco. abc 7 news was in the tenderloin district as hundreds pulled up and dropped off donations last night. the foundation collected more than 300 fresh or frozen hams and thousands of hand knitted scarves, socks for those in the city. >> we wanted the homeless to be warmer and cleaner, too. sorry. that's the toiletry. i do it because i want to. >> we are so blessed by the generosity of the san francisco community. >> this is the 30th year st. anthony and its volunteers have organized the donation drive. the napa police department organized a christmas surprise for a family whose truck was stolen with all their christmas presents inside. the department posted these photos on facebook. it said napa fire, cal fire, safeway provided with new gifts.

police did find the stolen truck, but there was, unfortunately, noggin side. the season of giving is alive and well at antioch high school. students and faculty teamed up to brighten christmas for a young man who thought his holiday had been ruined. here is abc 7 news anchor eric thomas. >> reporter: want to see what the real spirit of christmas looks like? >> this is for you. [ applause ] >> reporter: it was a picture-perfect response to what at first appeared to be a dark chapter in 15-year-old shawn hawkins' young life. you see, his old nintendo, a gift from grandma, was stolen from school while he was in gym class. >> my backpack was too big so i couldn't put it inside my locker. >> reporter: he was devastated when it was stolen and wrote a note on the white board begging for its return. this story could have ended

right there if not for a couple of caring friends. >> he's a sweet kid who doesn't do anything wrong to anyone and i felt bad for him. >> reporter: so friends shawna and piper collected money to buy him a new one, persevering even when the mean kids spoke out. >> i told a couple people i was raising money, that kid that got his ds stolen, that's funny. it's not funny. >> reporter: piper took this video of the emotional day they presented shawn with a new ds. >> i think we need to appreciate these moments and induce them more. >> i never thought i would ever play a ds again, but those girls proved me wrong. >> shawn, i think, found out people care about him and are looking out for him. i think the rewards of giving were pretty special for them as well. >> reporter: for shawn this was more than having a video game system stolen. he also studied it for what he hopes will be his future career
