the south. there's also snow on the ground in the upper midwest where the temperatures are expected to stay below freezing for much of the week ahead. it's also a rare white christmas in parts of the pacific northwest with snow swirling around seattle's space needle but also icy conditions on the roads there before the rest of the morning's head good morning. meteorologist mike nikko. today, partly sunny, mild temperatures. wood burning is banned today. fewer clouds, cooler lows tonight. the remabder of the air will be without rain. as far as temperatures go, 58 in richmond, the rest of us about 60 to 65 dwres. low to mid breaking overnight, a deadly suicide bombing in afghanistan. at least six people killed in an attack in the capital of kabul. officials say the device was set off in an office near the afghan

intelligence service. isis has taken responsibility for other recent attacks there. fwaut is guatemala is following the u.s. and saying it will move its embassy for israel to jerusalem. the president of the central american nation made that christmas eve announcement on facebook. guatemala is one of only nine countries to vote against recognizing jerusalem as israel's capital. back in this country the first family is celebrating their first christmas together since mr. trump took office back in january. the president also tweeting overnight, i am proud to have led the charge against the assault of our cherished and beautiful phrase, merry christmas. abc's kenneth moton has more from south florida. >> reporter: overnight, president trump attended mass in south florida. >> today and every day we're incredibly thankful. >> reporter: the commander-in-chief also spoke to the troops by video conference on christmas eve from his mar-a-lago resort. >> i wish everybody a merry,

merry, merry christmas. >> reporter: trump's relentless attack on the media continues, retweeting this image. look a little closer. yes, that's the cnn logo squashed under his shoe. he also targeted andrew mccabe who trump has accused of bias during the hillary clinton e-mail investigation. >> when you look at what's gone on with the fbi and the justice department, people are very angry. >> reporter: lawmakers on both sides have been concerned about the president's increasing attacks on the fbi, worried he will take aim at robert mueller, the special counsel in the russia investigation. >> no one is above the law. let mr. mueller do his investigation without interference. >> reporter: the president facing scrutiny about remarks he allegedly made in the oval office about immigrants. "the new york times" saying president trump had raised concerns about the number of immigrants who had entered the u.s. since he took office. the "times" says trump complained of 15,000 immigrants from haiti all have aids and the 40,000 nigerian immigrants would never go back to their huts in africa when seeing the u.s.

season and for the coming year is the archbishop of new york, timothy cardinal dolan. good morning to you, sir. >> good morning, a blessed christmas to you and all the folks kind enough to be watching. >> right back at you, sir. there's a lot of concern you hear -- this is something that i hear this time of year, is that the true meaning of the holiday is overwhelmed by materialism and commercialism and you have an interesting take on this issue. what is it? >> well thanks for thinking it's interesting. i think, to be griping and whining that we're too wrapped up in material things, counterproductive. why don't we try to make some gnocchi out of the dough we have got, okay? like it or not, people are buying, they're giving, they're sharing, they're coming together in unity. they're eating together, they're having a good time. that ain't bad, dan. i'll take it, okay? those in a way are spiritual values. see, we have always believed that every good thing in this life is a hint of the eternal gifts that god wants to give us,

so why not just rejoice that people are sharing, they're giving gifts, they're forgiving one another, they're meeting with people that they haven't seen until this time last year. they got happy memories. they're making good resolutions. those are all good things, darn it. it's almost like it's antipasto to the main course which would be the gifts that god wants to give us, okay? so i don't get all that mad that people might seem to be distracted by the gifts and the getting and the giving of the season. heck, let's make hay while the sun shines. that could be a good way to bring god into the picture, right? >> you talk about bringing people -- first of all, i love that answer. you talk about the importance and the meaning of bringing people together and communion at this time of year. however, we've just come through a long and we're still in the middle of a long and difficult political season in this country. >> yep. >> families are divided over political issues. how can faith be a balm at this time? >> yes.

b-a-l-m, not a b-o-m-b. right? we need an ointment, some consolation. precisely, dan, by reminding us of eternal things. all this stuff is going to pass, all this other stuff. it might be korea, washington, moscow. we center on bethlehem and the gifts that god gives us. and his son, our lord and savior, jesus christ. you're in the business of news, right? if you went back and rewound tapes to last year or the year before, you would be saying the same thing. i would be saying the same thing. this was a bleak year. how are we going to get through this news? but darn it, the human project endures. it's like god is saying, i love what i created. i love creation. i love creatures. boy are there a lot of ruffles, a lot of rough things. sometimes my creatures don't act the way that i wish they did but i'm not giving up on them, okay? we got that affirmation of the basic goodness and dignity of

the human person and the sacredness of human life from god himself, affirmed especially on christmas when he actually entered human history. if that doesn't give us consolation, i don't know what will. >> you make my job way too easy. all i have to do is ask you two simple questions and you fill the air with wisdom. so thank you. >> thank you. i had three good eggnogs before i came on. >> well said. back to you. >> a blessed christmas back to you. i love how our audience has transformed into these wonderful helpers on christmas day. the city transforms into a winter wonderland as well. ginger, you went to the north pole of sorts? >> this is unbelievable. i didn't know it existed but it does, from 18-foot long candy canes to the iconic tree that sits at radio city music hall.

this place is your fantasy land. >> reporter: it's the most wonderful time of the year in new york city and along famed fifth avenue, all the halls are decked and glowing with christmas cheer. but before the city transforms into a winter wonderland, the holiday magic all starts here. >> this year we have installed about 1,000 christmas trees and over 10,000 wreaths and almost 5 million lights. >> reporter: this is the ceo of american christmas, in charge of decorating many of manhattan's most famous buildings. >> we decorate radio city music hall and do everything for rockefeller center except the christmas tree. we do of course, saks fifth avenue and cartier. ferragamo. >> small companies. >> reporter: from trees and wreaths to bows and garland and ornaments, novelty items, the company's 110,000-square foot warehouse has it all. >> this is our decorations department.

>> i feel like i want the go shopping but that's not what this is for. >> reporter: if the building's big, the decorations are even bigger. >> i will go ahead and say it, the biggest wreath i've ever seen. >> this is a 16-foot diameter wreath with a pretty giant bow. these are 18-foot tall candy canes that hang at 9 west 57th street. >> there's nothing probably more iconic than a completely lit up panther. >> cartier is a client of ours and we developed panthers for them that sit on the ledges of the exteriors of their stores. this is a rendering that we did for saks fifth avenue. >> reporter: one of their standout projects, this dazzling department store light show. more than half a million lights synchronized to music leaving audiences wowed. for fred and his team, the business of christmas is a year-round job. >> during the busy season we have 200 employees. >> wow. >> so 65 full time and 135 seasonal. our seasonal people start coming back june 1st.

>> reporter: but those months of tireless work are all worth it in the end. >> it really is a tremendous feeling to walk through the city with family and friends and really enjoy what we've accomplished. >> that place was so special. i think the next natural step is letting us all in so we can shop. every ornament of over size and color. i love a good christmas shop and that place would do it for me. >> i need some stuff for the house. ginger, thank you for that. christmas cheer is also spreading to theaters this season. one of our favorite holiday movies "elf" it's going from the big screen to the big stage and amy got to see it all behind the scenes. >> santa, santa! >> reporter: it's the ultimate christmas movie "elf" now brought to life in "elf the musical." why do you think this story resonates?

>> it's become the new iconic christmas movie. it's become the story that everybody wants at christmastime. everyone gathers around and watches "elf" because it's contemporary and feels like today and it's a story that everybody can connect to. >> reporter: i went backstage at the theatre in new york city's madison square garden to get the inside christmas scoop starting with the magnificent costumes. >> you have christmas trees sort of hidden underneath like a little christmas surprise. yeah, it's absolutely stunning. >> and then this is santa claus. >> i mean, it doesn't get more magical than this. >> this is a great family show. so i brought my family. my daughters are here with us. they're going to be little elves. >> this goes above the knees and you look like you're the right height of a christmas town elf. there you go.

>> my girls and i were transformed into magical elves. >> thinking about how happy the elves are in christmas town. happy all the time, ball change. we're happy all the time. you got it. i think you would be great in the show. >> reporter: next up, we tried the local cuisine made by the one and only buddy. >> the five food groups are cookies, candy, candy canes, candy corn and sear up. syrup. well, this is really all about putting too much syrup over the top. >> the verdict is? >> it's really good. >> reporter: after a hardy meal we got some exercise doing what buddy does best. it's the ultimate christmas story guaranteed to put a smile on everyone's face. the end. elf the musical is at madison square garden through december 29th. back to you guys. >> i'm excited. big screen to the big stage.

ah...we still say pretty sweet. it's basically the same. good morning. two chp officers were taken to the hospital this morning after a horrific crash on interstate 880 in hayward. happened at midnight just north of highway 92. all southbound lanes have been closed since the crash and there's no word yet on when they'll reopen. chp says it will release more information on the officers' condition at 9:00 this morning. meanwhile in san francisco, four people were forced out of their homes by a fire overnight. the fire department says it started just before 1:00 a.m. at a home ones prospect avenue near eugene ya. flames damaged the homes on either side. no one was hurt and the cause is still under investigation. the red cross was called in the to help those people who were

>> can't go wrong there. >> i thought everyone was supposed to wear a hat. >> we didn't get the memo. >> i'm in cleveland usually for christmas. my grandfather who actually turns 100 this year -- >> wow. >> his birthday is december 16th so we're in cleveland celebrating his birthday and then christmas so i'm really looking forward to this year. it will be a lot of fun. >> does he like this? >> no. this will be gone by the real christmas day. >> so give us some last minute recipes here. >> i think if you have puff pastry in your freezer, you'll always have something last minute. we're going to make a pin wheel, and lara, you're going to help me. we have cream cheese here. dumb in whatever kind of cheese you want. some fresh thyme, a little bit of clove and butter. that gets mixed all in. then we get this. here's our puff pastry. take half of that. half of this. half of this. >> lara, it's like crafting. >> then you spread it. >> i can do that. >> you spread it and then take some kind of ham. we have this ham and we'll put this down like this. >> this could be deli ham. >> deli ham, any kind of cheese. roll this up. >> this would be great actually with swiss cheese as well. >> yes. then we slice this like this. >> i'm very busy still with my ham. >> carla's done and lara's still going. >> then we cook this for 15 to 20 minutes at 400 degrees and this is what we have. then we finish it, we take a little bit of honey. drizzle that on there. >> oh. >> it's all about the finish. take a little bit of orange zest, boom, boom, boom, olives and look. you have the sweet, the salty, very simple. >> beautiful. >> little bit of everything

there. i love it. >> so easy even i could do it. >> yes. >> that's to start but we're going to get to the main course. michael, we need you for this. say you have a lot of people coming over but you have a small oven. >> this is a very good thing. so what you do is take something and be able to make an entire dish in one pan. we're going to roast a pork butt and we're going to finish the vegetables in the pan with it and make a gravy in that same pan. it >> perfect. i of lo a one-pan wonder. >> i'm going to give you the salt and you just let it go. just be aggressive, stray. be aggressive. treat that pork butt like a corner back. that's good. this is a huge piece of meat. ♪ be aggressive, be, be aggressive ♪ >> this is a large piece of meat. you can be aggressive with the salt. >> i'm trying to figure out if they spelled it right. >> this is already seasoned. we put this in an oven for two hours at 400.

right until it gets to this point. i take about 15 garlic cloves, a mess of red-skinned potatoes. throw them in. throw them in whole. carrots, throw them in, onion chopped up, throw it in. a little bit of salt and pepper again and it goesz back in the oven for about three hours. there you go. cook your pork butt so it's 195 internal temperature. that's the key. that's when it really falls apart. then you take the drippings. george, pour in that flour. george is making a roux like the master that he is. whisk in a little bit of stock. you can add your favorite bourbon to this if you wanted to jazz it up a little bit, or white wine. then you let this simmer and you have a beautiful gravy which is right down here. >> really easy and really good. >> so we have our roasted pork. we have our vegetables, we have our gravy. what i like to do is you also keep some buns for leftovers.

hey, do you want to play with your outside toys? noon, near 60. unfortunately it's going to be bone all right, guys. let's head back over to you. >> thank you, ginger. we are back with michael symon, carla hall from "the chew." we saved the best for last, dessert. >> this is a pantry pie called chess pie. i have a crust. everything goes in the mixer, my butter, flour, water, salt and sugar. it goes into a mixture and comes together like that. we blind bake. we take our crust, put it in the pan and crimp it and put parchment paper, black beans and our pie crust. >> to hold the crust down. we're not eating the black beans >> okay. thank you. >> then we have brown sugar, white sugar, mix these up. it's a little bit of corn meal. you have a little bit of salt. yes, yes, whisk, yes. baking powder, salt, sugar. you have coco powder. this is a chocolate chess pie.
