merry christmas, everybody. one thing we like to do that special day of the year is bing eat. who else to help celebrate than this. he wants to break another guinness book world record. he's broken four already. >> it's time to eat all the chocolates from an advent calendar. >> who wouldn't want to eat one in the fastest time. you have to wait every day to open the door and eat one piece of chocolate. >> here are the guidelines. >> there are all kind of rules and guidelines even though it's not been broken yet. >> you are not allowed to use homemade advent calendars. >> it has to be standard so if someone wants to break it, they have to follow the same thing. >> a lot of the calendars, the numbers are jumbled up. you must open each chocolate in order from door one to two 24.

>> she's right in the center of that scene. and united airlines is facing another public relations nightmare. the airline is apologizing to a passenger who says the airline gave her first class seat to a texas congresswoman, sheila jackson. an airline spokesman said the internal system showed the passenger had cancelled her seat after weather delay, but she denied that she ever cancelled that december 18 flight from houston to washington. she was given a seat in economy plus instead. earlier this year, united faced backlash have dragging dr. david dao. or security officials did, at least. he had refused to give up his seat to make room for crew members for the airline. he later reached an undisclosed settlement with united. it's the day after christmas, also known as part two of the holiday shopping season. >> all right. so whether you're returning, exchanging, shopping a little bit late, or maybe using one of

merry christmas again. i am proud to have led the charge against the assault on our cherished and beautiful phrase, merry christmas. some believe it began when retail stores began swapping out the term merry christmas for happy holidays. and by 2005, the change upset several cable news hosts like bill o'reilly. but frustration with the term may be less about religion than politics. a poll conducted found 66% of democrats prefer use of the term happy holidays, while 67% of republicans say stores should only say merry christmas. on the campaign trail, candidate trump promised to bring back the phrase. politics aside, mr. trump is not the first president to say -- >> merry christmas. >> reporter: his predecessor used the term every year. >> merry christmas, everybody. merry christmas. merry christmas everything. >> reporter: past presidents also use the phrase happy holidays.

suspected drunk driver crashed into his patrol vehicle on christmas eve. highway patrolman andrew camilleri was killed. the driver who hit the officer's vehicle was under the influence of alcohol and possibly marijuana. 33-year-old camilleri leaves behind a wife and three children. he joined the california highway patrol just last year. now the nfl is change its concussion protocol after high-profile cases prompted investigations. now an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant will be required at the lead command center for all games to monitor injuries. an impact seizure will be treated as a loss of consciousness and a player will be taken out of the game. all injured players will be given a concussion assessment. the late-season changes are now in effect. and if santa skipped your house this christmas, maybe one of the national lotteries will put a little something in your stocking. >> ooh, i like that. there was no winner saturday

just a reminder, the government is only funded until january 19th when congress pass a temporary measure. so we could be facing a major showdown. president trump anxious to get on the same page as gop leaders. the white house said he's invited mitch mcconnell and paul ryan to discuss their 2018 agenda. diane and gio. the presidents what the guest of honor at state visits to china, south korea and vietnam. and queen elizabeth has invited him to the uk. the white house says the president is hoping to host a state visit early next year, but there's no word on which government might be getting the invitation. the united nations is bracing for the possibility of another financial blow. the u.s. is slashing nearly $300 million from the u.n.'s annual budget and hinted that may cuts may follow. president trump recently threatened to pull aid from member nations for condemning his decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of

israel and he's complained that the u.s. contributes more than 20% of the u.s. budget. now ambassador nikki haley said they're looking to improve efficiency. overseas, russian opposition leaders are calling for a boycott of next year's presidential election after it was determined that alexei navalny can't run for president because of his former prosecutions. he's widely viewed as president vladimir putin's most serious challenger but putin is expected to easily win elect whether or not navalny runs. the election is march 18th. and in cuba, dozens are injured after a fireworks explosion during christmas eve festival. at least six children are among the annual event. the annual event draws thousands of tourists and cubans each town. it features a fireworks contest between two neighboring towns. the cause of the explosion is under investigation. >> yeah. that does not look safe there. back in this country, the roads are slippery in new england and are the runways.

♪ welcome back to "world news now." we are going to kick things off now with the story of how two african-american police officers are making a difference working to bridge the divide between their communities. >> we're up all "nightline" with abc's juju chang. >> this is my old neighborhood. >> reporter: when lieutenant yolanda williams walks these familiar streets, it's like she never left. you literally know everybody. >> yeah. i used to walk the beat. >> reporter: as she strolls through this san francisco neighborhood where many view police as a foe, most everybody sees her as a friend. >> hello. how are >> reporter: across the in pittsburgh, it's the same for officer aundre wright. they used to call the former

football player dre the football player, now he's a cop. but he insists not much has changed. >> we're at homewood. that's where i'm from. this is my people. it is what it is. >> reporter: at a time when tensions between police and black communities are explosively high, the divide between americans can feel irreparably deep, yolanda and andre caught in a precarious balance. as one called it, too black for the badge and too blue for the hood. there's a black lives matter and a blue lives matter in this country. >> yes. >> reporter: where do you fall in that? >> well, you know, i have told people that i am always going to be black. but i'm only blue as long as i continue to wear the uniform. >> reporter: she joined the force nearly 30 years ago as part of the justice department's push for diversity in sfpd's ranks.

she was an unlikely candidate then. >> i complained about blatant drug deals, i complained about police cars that drove by the area like they didn't even exist. >> reporter: these police officers said stop complaining, get in the game. >> right. >> reporter: back in the early days, walking the beat, she was hopeful, idealistic. >> i feel like this is my ultimate calling, and i love it. i thought we one big happy family until 2015. i found out there were some who didn't feel the same connection. >> reporter: two years ago one of her colleagues had been convicted of fraud. but during his appeal, investigators stumbled upon racist and sexist texts between him and other cops. shockingly, they singled out one sergeant, yolanda williams. >> i thought, get out of here. >> reporter: you didn't want to believe it? >> i did not want to believe it.

>> reporter: what messages stick in your mind? >> i was someone's black n-b. it horrified me. >> reporter: she testified on a blue ribbon panel that there was bias in the ranks. rather than defend yolanda, the union president rebuked her, writing that her testimony was largely self-centered and grossly unfair. soon after, she left the police union. the union responded saying we are concern that the vast majority of our members do not agree with her either. the department of justice had been investigating sfpd. and in october of 2016 it strongly recommended nearly 300 institutional changes, identifying numerous indicators of inflicted and institutionalized bias against minority groups. that fall, yolanda was promoted. she identifies with the mistrust and fear that many have toward
