morning commute. it is virtually nonexistent. it's very light out there and i expect it will be that way most of this holiday week. we had an earlier stall approaching the san matteo bridge toll plaza that's been moved off to the side, traffic is knowing nicely a few brake lights but basically you are looking at about a 15 minute drive from 880 over towards foster city. this is good looking traffic map this morning with all green. tracy to dublin under 25 minutes, highway 4 is looking great into concord. if your travels take you from san rafael into southern marin across the span of the golden gate bridge less than 20 minutes. flags will be flown at half state at state buildings on in honor of a highway patrol officer killed in the line of duty in hayward. officer andrew camilleri of tracy died late christmas eve. he was on maximum enforcement patrol on the side of interstate 880 looking for drivers under the influence when chp says that their vehicle was hit by one of those drivers. the suspect involved in the deadly crash was taken to the hospital where he remains this

morning. camilleri leaves behind a wife and three children. >> the chp claims the driver who caused the crash is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. the drug becomes legal in california next monday. some lawmakers are concerned because there are still no standard test or tools for law enforcement to determine if a driver is impaired by pot. one dispensary in san jose says its staff will talk to customers about using responsibly. >> a lot of folks are coming in to officer yens cannabis for the first time. we will talk about the effects, also talk about some of the risks and dangers associated with it and we also include it in written form that goes out with every transaction. >> the state will charm a 15% excise tax on marijuana sales. some of that money is expected to go toward education and research, which could lead to a similar test to a blood alcohol content for pot. developing news out of southern california now where tier are still battling the thomas fire.

that fire has burned more than 281,000 acres, it is 86% contained now. the u.s. forest service expects full containment by january 7th. more than 700 homes have been destroyed so far. the fire is blamed for two deaths including a firefighter from san diego. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. happening today, expect some very busy stores and shopping malls as millions of people start to make their holiday returning. >> a lot of stores opening up early for this. matt keller is live in san jose with it all. hey there, matt. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and jessica. walmart just opened their doors out here at 6:00 a.m. and people rushed in for some holiday deals, but nobody had any returns. today, though, you get a chance to make things right if you have that gift, you really didn't want, or at least you get a chance to get the right size. americans returned nearly $90 billion worth of holiday gifts and many of them will try to do that today creating even bigger lines than you saw for christmas

caught. mike, thank you. a legal fight that is emerged merged after atlanta police gave a woman a ticket for feeding homeless people in a city park. all of those charges were dismissed but her case is sparking questions about whether feeding people for free is good for them had the long runs. they say volunteers may mean well but their efforts can hinder efforts to connect homeless people with much needed services. officials worry about food safety and any garbage that may be left behind. this forgotten port-a-potty became the inn operation for a holiday display that has gone viral. a family who lived nearby put up christmas on it as a joke. it went viral so the family decided to use it for good and put up a donation bin next to it hoping to collect goods for charity. >> if you can work something good out of something that's maybe not so food, i think you look for the positive side of every little thing. in the end it's been great. the port-a-potty company eventually spotted their commode and agreed to keep the display

will find out after this. this morning the community is mourning an officer who died in a crash on christmas eve. >> officer andrew camilleri of tracy leaves behind a wife and three kids. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at hayward chp where someone was actually left flowers, amy? >> reporter: that's right, jessica. officers here say they are heartbroken, but look behind me at how the community is responding. there are a couple of flower arrangements here to let them know that the community is with them. the chp did put out a statement to thank everyone for the tremendous outpouring of support from the community. 33-year-old officer andrew camilleri was killed at midnight christmas morning or right before midnight, maybe it was christmas eve when the car he and his partner were in, it was parked on the shoulder, was slammed into by a red cadillac. it happened on southbound 880 in hayward. investigators say the driver of that car was speeding and was under the influence and that he had just left a party.

>> this person, a 22-year-old from hayward, chose to drive while under the influence of alcohol and also drugs, and this needs to stop. >> reporter: in hayward friends and neighbors visited the home of the driver. the chp has not released his name yet, but those in the neighborhood say they offer their condolences to the officer's family. they tell us the 22-year-old driver is married and has a new baby. he is in hospital -- he is in the hospital in very serious condition and an officer here at the chp tells me he will be for a while, but when he is released he will face several felony charges. live in hayward, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. governor jerry brown commented on the officer's death issuing this statement saying, quote, anne and i are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of officer camiller. we join his family, friends and the entire california highway patrol in mourning his death and honoring his sacrifice. an alameda county sheriff's

deputy shot and wounded a man who investigators say tried to attack deputies with a ma sh tee. this incident happened saturday morning o at a home on princeton steet near hayward. they were responding to a domestic violence call at the time. deputies say a woman called 911 saying her husband was attacking her. when they arrived to arrest the man they say he went after them with a machete. one of the deputies shot and wounded the man. he is expected to survive. fortunately no deputies were hurt. we are tracking winter weather at the live desk. not everyone is fortunate as we are here on the west coast. in fact, there are dangerous conditions in parts of the country. in the midwest there's windchill warnings and advisories and some areas on the east coast could be buried under up to four feet of snow. abc news reporter elizabeth hur has more on this story from new york. >> reporter: whiteout conditions from upstate new york to maine,

massachusetts, western pennsylvania and michigan. with visibilities so poor, authorities warning drivers to slow down or better yet stay home. for some easier said than done. especially when you're trying to fly to your destination and the airport tarmac looks like this. in boston the heavy snow temporarily shut down runways at logan international. the slick conditions also being blamed for a close cal. >> boston tower, are you okay? >> everything is fine, we just skidded on the ice. >> reporter: a jetblue flight while landing, hitting a patch of ice, spinning and kidding off the runway. >> we were straight and then all of a sudden it started fishtailing and, yeah, it started getting rough. >> once i realized we were going off the runway i was like uh-oh. >> reporter: in a brief statement jetblue confirming the incident, adding no one was hurt. snow and icy conditions also wreaking havoc out west. this the scene in portland, oregon, seeing a white christmas

for only the sixth time since 1884. and in the midwest some residents are waking up this morning to wind chills as low as 48 degrees below zero. >> it's cold. cold is cold. you've got to adjust. >> here in the northeast it won't get that cold, but forecasters say temperatures will drop below 0 in some areas and that bitter cold will be sticking around for days. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. we have been checking right now there are no delays in or out of sfo, but as always be sure to check your flight status with your airline before heading out to the airport. speaking of planes, look at this, a planeload of airline passengers walked away unharmed after a patch of ice caused their jetliner to spin and slide in boston. jetblue airways flight 50 wound up facing the wrong way at logan international airport yesterday. the plane had just landed from savannah, georgia, when it spun

out and wound up stuck in a grassy area between runways. thankfully no you one was hurt. firefighters evacuated the passengers and got them safely to the terminal and those passengers praised the pilots for keeping them safe. i remember vividly my welcome to minnesota moment during the cold i went to put gas in the cold, i reached for the handle on the pump, my hand froze to it. that happens once. let's take a look outside, show you what's going on. nothing like that here. what we have is a little bit of fog from santa rosa up to ukiah, temperatures that are hovering around freezing, so black ice is possible. here is a look from our roof camera this morning, beautiful backdrop to talk about moderate air quality right now, nothing poor out there. wood burning is banned all day as the air quality could get worse. in fact, around vallejo at midnight and 1:00 in the morning you had poor air quality. the north bay and the santa clara valley are forecast to

have it today. wednesday and thursday not much changes in our pattern so i wouldn't be surprised if those are upgraded to spare the air days also. everybody but the peninsula and the south bay, colder this morning, down in the south bay you are in the upper 30s to mid 40s. let's see everybody else, about 36 lafayette, san francisco at about 48. want to show you the san matteo bridge as it's getting busy this morning. roads just caution during your commute planner for the fog across the north bay. chilly and cool on mass transit today and light winds if you will be out on the bay. here is sue. we have this happens about once a week it seems, we have a problem on the bay bridge with a big rig stuck. what we don't know is what direction. the chp is headed there to let us know, but it's on the on ramp or off ramp to treasure eye left hand, either eastbound or westbound. it's not affecting lanes on the bridge but those big rigs have a really hard time taking those turns to get on or off at treasure island. here we have the toll plaza with

no problems whatsoever, we have not had any metering lights at all. now, it seems the chp is not going to issue a sig alert for this accident up near litten springs, there was a car blocking two lanes of traffic that apparently hit a tree, driver was able to move off to the right shoulder on their own, so it looks like we are pretty much clear of the roadway and we will check back especially on that bay bridge big rig issue in just a few. happening today, muni will begin serving the new san francisco sales force transit center. the five fulton bus to sixth avenue will stop at the transit center from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. monday through friday. riders ma i board at the bus plaza at beil and mission streets or transit island on fremont and market. those heading to the temporary trans bay terminal for ac transit, west cat, bolt and amtrak may transfer at the bus stop on beil between market and mission. christmas gave basketball fans another chapter in the saga between the cleveland cavaliers

district yesterday where 500 volunteers helped prepare and serve ham and turkey dinners. by the end of the day volunteers had dished up about 5,000 meals including breakfast, lunch and padding meals. salvation army volunteers spend yesterday morning preparing meals for house bound residents in san francisco. they delivered 4500 meals on christmas day. more than 400 volunteers picked up the meals. some southwest airline passengers felt right at home on christmas day while waiting for their flight. ♪ i'll be home for ♪ if only in my >> the crowd goes wild. >> oh, my gosh. >> houston resident charise miles has been a flight attendant for 20 years.

yeah. >> absolutely. especially those ones that have the recliners in them, those are comfortable. hi, everybody. look at how glasslike the bay is this morning, high pressure taking over. more sunshine today, but unfortunately the possibility of poor air quality does exist on this spare the air day. partly cloudy tonight, but watch out for the fog, it will be more widespread tomorrow morning, i'm tracking the chance of rain for the new year. for today we will have low 60s inland, 56 to 59 around the bay and 57 to 59 at the coast. you can see the wealth of fog tonight with mid to upper 30s inland, low to mid 40s around the bay and mid to upper 40s along the coast into san francisco. now, the rain could start saturday night in the form of some light showers and then sunday into monday starting to pick up on a pretty healthy storm, but the models have done this before and what happens every time we get close? they fall apart. so a third to possibly two-thirds of an inch of rain by the time the end of the first day of 2018 is over.

i'm holding my breath on it right now, that's just one model and that's why we don't have a storm track on sunday or monday, but the chance is developing to we will keep an eye on it. get used to temperatures in the upper 50s to mid 60s in the afternoon hours. can we get used to this quiet commute? >> it's pretty quiet. let's take a look at the bay bridge coming into san francisco, that upper deck, chp was able to locate that disabled big rig, it is in the eastbound direction lower deck of the treasure island off ramp that is quite often the site when these big rigs get suck. chp is on scene trying to get that unstuck. it's not in lanes blocking the eastbound direction, but you will find a little bit of slowing past that big rig. here we do have a little bit of slow traffic westbound 580, i act surprised because it's been to looity this morning, but we do have an stent partially blocking a lane of traffic here, it's actually in the middle lane west 580 near stroe bridge. they are in the process of clearing that. >> thank you.
