sausedo has the emotional story from tracy. >> reporter: whether you're in uniform our in plain clothes, you could hear the heartache from the large crowd gathered in tracy. >> i didn't know the guy. i just feel for him and his family. >> reporter: the loss unbearable for both strangers and friends of chp officer andrew camilleri. >> we all attended the same church. and at one time andrew was a youth leader and he mentored our son. >> reporter: liz chavez and her family wanted to honor the man who gave so much to them. now they want to be there for the wife and three kids he leaves behind. >> being a wife and a mother myself, i can't imagine. i cannot imagine what my friend is going through. >> reporter: camilleri was a leader not just on the highways but at his church. >> faith was i think the most important thing to andrew. >> reporter: camilleri played bass guitar on the worship team at mission city church and ministered to others. >> he really followed his dream

to become a chp officer, and it was more than a career. it was a calling for him. >> reporter: that calling tragically came to an end on christmas eve while he and his partner were on duty, looking for impaired drivers on i-880 in hayward. >> i'm very upset, knowing that someone made the decision to get behind the wheel being under the influence. that's what angers me. >> reporter: for the chavez family they're relying on their faith to get them through this difficult period. something that will take time. camilleri's body will remain at this chapel overnight as we wait for information on funeral arrangements. in tracy, carlos salcedo, abc 7 news. now the man accused of causing the crash that killed officer camilleri remains in the hospital tonight in serious condition. the crash happened, as you've heard, on christmas eve as camilleri and his partner were on duty looking for impaired drivers in hayward. the suspect is a 22-year-old man from hayward. investigators say he was under the influence of marijuana and

alcohol. his name has not been released. a bell toll tribute ceremony for officer camilleri will take place tomorrow at the chp academy in west sacramento. it is open to the public. the tribute is a centuries-old law enforcement tradition to honor officers killed in the line of duty. the ceremony begins at 11:00 a.m. we'll provide coverage of that. and the chp tonight released details of a fund to assist officer camilleri's family. you can donate by going to our website, abc7news.com. we do have some breaking news coming out of the south bay tonight. a preliminary 3.9 earthquake was just reported after 10:30 tonight near alum rock. all of this follows an earlier report of a 3.1 quake near morgan hill. viewers have been tweeting us at abc 7 news bay area, saying they felt it. no injuries or damages have been reported. new at 11:00, two people were hurt after their vehicles collided, sending one crashing into a santa clara home.

it happened at about 6:30 tonight. no one was inside the home at the time. firefighters shored up the structural supports destroyed in that crash. both people who were injured are expected to be okay. some local politics. the race for san francisco mayor is getting crowded. we learned today that 14 people are throwing their hats into the ring to fill the seat of mayor ed lee, who died suddenly two weeks ago from cardiac arrest. all of the candidates still need to be verified. some of the well-known names seeking the seat are former san francisco supervisor angela al yoelto, former state senator mark leno, and current san francisco supervisor jane kim. a special election will be held on june the 5th. now to the weather and a chance of something that is in short supply right now. we are talking about the rain. so let's get a check with abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma. >> it's been such a dismal december in terms of rainfall. look at the numbers.

where we stand 26 days into the month most spots have not even hit a tenth of an inch of rain. see we should be this far into anywhere from 2 to 5 1/2 inches of rain. but we could see that changing later in the week. and look at that. the qulienks optimistic right now that sunday into monday we coul see our next chance of some rain moving through the region. we're going to detail what we could see heading into the new year coming up in our full accuweather forecast. we'll see you in a few, guys. >> drew, thanks very much. biologists are trying to figure out what killed a whale that washed up in point reyes on christmas eve. an initial necropsy indicates the whale has tissue bruising on the right side of its head and neck area. a team of marine mammal center scientists have not yet confirmed if a ship strike killed the 30-foot-long juvenile male humpback. a full report should be complete two weeks. antioch police are asking for your help tonight identifying the man seen in a photo posted online by police. there it is. he is accused of stealing mail

from two postal carrier vehicles in antioch today and yesterday. contact the antioch police if you recognize the man or this blue vehicle. a mob of about 100 juveniles forced stockton police to shut down a portion of weberstown mall just before 7:00 p.m. that's after receiving reports of juveniles trespassing, disturbing shoppes, and fighting in the parking lot there. responding officers say the crowd was uncooperative, so they called in more units to assist. they arrested two juveniles for trespassing. we are glad to tell you no one was hurt. well, did you know it's currently illegal in california for an alcohol company to provide a ride home to someone who's been drinking at an event. on january 1st that will change. and new at 11:00 tonight, abc 7 news reporter katie marzullo joins us live from our south bay bureau to explain. katie. >> reporter: dion, the effort to change the law started in the south bay with california assemblyman evan low. he believes the new legislation

will help prevent drunk driving. when planning for the super bowl in santa clara last year, state assemblyman evan low saw something in california law he didn't like. >> during this time it became apparent to myself that these companies were not able to provide free or discounted rides to individuals getting home safely. >> reporter: he's talking about companies that make alcohol. but starting january 1st, alcohol manufacturers can partner with a ride share or cab company ahead of an event like the super bowl and make arrangements for transportation for partygoers. >> it's my belief that individuals and adults will continue to do the activities that they deem fit for themselves and it's imperative that in the state of california we provide them an opportunity to do so but responsibly. >> reporter: groups like alcohol justice oppose the change. on its website it says the bill implicitly allows for beer manufacturers to promote the overconsumption of alcohol. people we talked with disagree. >> i just think it's freedom of

back to l.a. because unauthorized passenger was on the wrong plane in an apparent mix-up of some kind. model and tv host christie teigen chronicled her journey back to california on twitter for a few hours. in one of her tweets teigen says, "a flying first for me. four hounz into an 11-hour flight and we are turning around because of a passenger who isn't supposed to be on this plane. why do we all gotta go back? i don't know." her husband singer john legend was with her. the plane has been rescheduled to depart for tokyo tomorrow morning. san francisco's giant new salesforce transit center is up and running, technically. the transit center replaces the old terminal that was demolished in 2011. topped with a five-acre rooftop park, the new center stretches three city blocks, twice the length of the transamerica pyramid. planners hope caltrain and high-speed rail will arrive underground. in total, it's an estimated $6

but temperatures are falling rather rapidly. on the accuweather highlights it will be chilly. we're dropping into the 30s in our coldest spots and we'll have some patchy fog developing tonight. you'll encounter that first thing wednesday morning. we're tracking mild days late week and then the potential is there as we get into new year's eve, we could track some rain moving through. we'll detail that in just one second. temperaturewise out there right now, we are cooling off pretty quickly in the north bay. look at this napa already down to 35. 34 chilly degrees in fairfield. contrast that to 47 right now in san jose and san francisco, currently checking in at 49 degrees. here's the cool from accuweather. overall tonight we'll have mainly clear skies out there but we will have fog developing in the delta first, and that's going to stream into the bay and bring some patchy fog through oakland into san francisco. closer to the bay, waters are in the mid to low 40s. our coldest spots will drop into the mid 30s overnight tonight. 12-hour planner on your wednesday. we'll get you out the door in the morning. a few pockets of fog here and there but the fog will dissipate

rather quickly. by the afternoon we'll see a ton of sunshine out there and a really comfortable day temperaturewise. a lot of spots headed back into the 60s. so highs on your wednesday go to about 63 in concord tomorrow afternoon, the same in san jose, 62 in san rafael and napa 60 behind oakland. we'll have some morning patchy fog in san francisco that quickly burns off for some sunshine in the afternoon and a temperature of 58 degrees. that's spot on for where we should be this time of year. we'll get you your three-day forecast into the weekend because we do have some changes into the holiday. first saturday it's above average temperatures were dry. mix of sun and clouds out there but new year's eve and new year's day we are tracking the chance for a potential storm to move into our region and we call it a possible storm because we have two computer models we look at that are very reliable but they're painting two very different pictures over the holiday weekend. first we give you the rainfall estimate for the european model sunday into monday. you can see it just drenches us with some very welcomed rainfall. the highest amounts likely exceeding over an inch.

the college football bowl season comes to the bay area tomorrow with the foster farms bowl at levi's stadium. arizona led by their outstanding quarterback khalil tate squares off against purdue. ucla starting qb josh rosen sat out tonight's cactus bowl because of a concussion. his backup davon monster got off to a great start. hits a wide open theo howard for a 70-yard touchdown. it's the bruins' longest play from scrimmage all season. down by ten at the half, kansas state rallied scoring 28 straight points. on fourth and one alex barnes breaks into the clear.

the wildcats win 35-17. this may have been the final game for 78-year-old head coach bill snyder. the stanford football team is in san antonio for thursday's alamo bowl. the cardinal is a 2 1/2-point underdog to tcu. tonight the players got to visit the city's famous river walk. stanford is playing in a bowl game for a school-record ninth straight season. warriors star guard steph curry will not play in tomorrow's game against utah, but he might be available against charlotte on friday. the team's medical staff checked curry's sprained ankle today and said he's making steady progress. lebron james was crying foul yesterday, and apparently he was right. the nba said today kevin durant did foul lebron twice late in the contest. once when he caused him to lose the ball and then on this drive with just 25 seconds left and the cavs down by three. no foul was called either time. >> obviously, the -- he
